Cytokine Dynamics, Diagnosis And Treatment Of Neuroinflammation In Chronic Constriction Injury Rat Model, Kiran Vasudeva Jan 2015

Cytokine Dynamics, Diagnosis And Treatment Of Neuroinflammation In Chronic Constriction Injury Rat Model, Kiran Vasudeva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic neuropathic pain is a serious, worldwide health problem leading to life-long treatment and the possibility of significant disability. In this study, neuropathic pain was modeled using the chronic constriction injury (CCI) in rats. The CCI rats exhibited hypersensitivity (typical neuropathic pain symptom) to mechanical stimulation of the affected paw 11 days post-surgery, at a time when sham surgery animals did not. It is known that immune cells play a role in the development of neuropathic pain and to further explore the relationship between neuropathic pain and immune cells, we hypothesized that the infiltration of immune cells into the affected …

The Transmuted Exponentiated Generalized-G Family Of Distributions, Haitham M. Yousof, Ahmed Z. Afify, Morad Alizadeh, Nadeem Shafique Butt, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce a new class of continuous distributions called the transmuted exponentiated generalized-G family which extends the exponentiated generalized-G class introduced by Cordeiro et al. (2013). We provide some special models for the new family. Some of its mathematical properties including explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, generating function, Rényi and Shannon entropies, order statistics and probability weighted moments are derived. The estimation of the model parameters is performed by maximum likelihood. The flexibility of the proposed family is illustrated by means of an applications to real dataset.

A High-Content Multiplexed Screening Platform For The Evaluation And Manipulation Of Force And Fatigue Of Adult Derived Skeletal Muscle Myotubes In Defined Serum-Free Medium, Christopher Mcaleer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The overall focus of this project has two parts: First, was to develop a protocol utilizing serum-free media formulations and defined plating and culture techniques to create functional in vitro myotubes derived from adult skeletal muscle satellite cells. The second was to manipulate the inherent muscle parameters such as force output and fatigue of these myotubes by employing exercise regimes or by small molecule application. The importance of serum-free medium use for in vitro cultures is becoming increasingly important in creating functional systems that can be validated for drug testing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Also, the study …

Observing, Understanding, And Manipulating Biological Membranes, Ian Mc Cabe Jan 2015

Observing, Understanding, And Manipulating Biological Membranes, Ian Mc Cabe

Dissertations - ALL

The phospholipid bilayer is one of the hallmarks of eukaryotic life. This complicated two dimensionally fluid surface is composed of a double layer of lipids which have a region that is hydrophobic and a region that is hydrophilic. The lipid bilayer membranes of a cell act as a barrier that distinguishes the cells and the organelles interiors from the outside environment. In order for the cell to be able to effectively communicate across these impermeable barriers they have evolved many intricate systems of lipid and protein interaction that serve to transmit information from one side of the membrane to the …

The Dimerization Kinetics Of Ncad12 With A Mutated Cis-X-Pro Bond, Victoria Mcclearn Jan 2015

The Dimerization Kinetics Of Ncad12 With A Mutated Cis-X-Pro Bond, Victoria Mcclearn

Honors Theses

VICTORIA RAE McCLEARN: DIMERIZATION KINECTICS OF NCAD12 P16A (Under the direction Dr. Susan Pedigo) Calcium binding causes a conformational change into a strand swapped dimer for the cadherins. However, regardless of the sequence similarity for Epithelial Cadherin (ECAD) and Neural Cadherin (NCAD), they respond to the presence of calcium differently. For NCAD, the rate of assembly and disassembly depends upon the presence of calcium, whereas for ECAD the rate of exchange is independent of calcium. Studies into a kinetic model to explain the differences between the rates have been recently conducted. It is believed that ECAD uses an X-dimer intermediate …

Synthetic Oligodeoxynucleotide Purification Via Catching By Polymerization, Suntara Fueangfung Jan 2015

Synthetic Oligodeoxynucleotide Purification Via Catching By Polymerization, Suntara Fueangfung

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Large quantities of pure synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) are important for preclinical research, drug development, and biological studies. These ODNs are synthesized on an automated synthesizer. It is inevitable that the crude ODN product contains failure sequences which are not easily removed because they have the same properties as the full length ODNs. Current ODN purification methods such as polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP HPLC), anion exchange HPLC, and affinity purification can remove those impurities. However, they are not suitable for large scale purification due to the expensive aspects associated with instrumentation, solvent demand, and high …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Rooted in critical scholarship this dissertation is an interdisciplinary study, which contends that having a history is a basic human right. Advocating a newly conceived and termed, Solidarity-inspired History framework/practice perspective, the dissertation argues for and then delivers a restorative voice to working-class historical actors during the 1916 Minnesota Iron Ore Strike. Utilizing an interdisciplinary methodological framework the dissertation combines research methods from the Humanities and the Social Sciences to form a working-class history that is a corrective to standardized studies of labor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Oftentimes class interests and power relationships determine the dominant …

Thermal Variation, Thermal Extremes And The Physiological Performance Of Individuals, W. Wesley Dowd, Felicia A. King, Mark W. Denny Jan 2015

Thermal Variation, Thermal Extremes And The Physiological Performance Of Individuals, W. Wesley Dowd, Felicia A. King, Mark W. Denny

Biology Faculty Works

In this review we consider how small-scale temporal and spatial variation in body temperature, and biochemical/physiological variation among individuals, affect the prediction of organisms’ performance in nature. For ‘normal’ body temperatures – benign temperatures near the species’ mean – thermal biology traditionally uses performance curves to describe how physiological capabilities vary with temperature. However, these curves, which are typically measured under static laboratory conditions, can yield incomplete or inaccurate predictions of how organisms respond to natural patterns of temperature variation. For example, scale transition theory predicts that, in a variable environment, peak average performance is lower and occurs at a …

Mercury Methylation Potentials In Sediments An Ancient Cypress Wetland Using Species-Specific Isotope Dilution-Gc-Icp-Ms: Analytical Method Development And The Effect Of Sorbent Amendments, Derek Davin Bussan Jan 2015

Mercury Methylation Potentials In Sediments An Ancient Cypress Wetland Using Species-Specific Isotope Dilution-Gc-Icp-Ms: Analytical Method Development And The Effect Of Sorbent Amendments, Derek Davin Bussan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel method was developed to measure mercury (Hg) directly in environmental solids using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with online sample ashing. The method combines a direct mercury analyzer (DMA) that is based on sample combustion, Hg pre-concentration by amalgamation with gold, and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), with a high resolution ICP-MS. Unlike AAS, the ICP-MS is capable of individual isotope measurements allowing for accurate quantitation by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) and for isotope tracer experiments. The method was validated using certified reference materials including sediment (NIST 2709), leaves (NIST 1547), and fish-muscle (DORM-3), with recoveries within …

Primer Efficacy In The Dna Barcoding Of Spiders, Rhennetta Jo Bork Jan 2015

Primer Efficacy In The Dna Barcoding Of Spiders, Rhennetta Jo Bork

Honors Program Theses

DNA barcoding is the process of amplifying a 650 base pair segment of the sequence of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase (COI), and amplifying this gene with a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). It is used to help identify and distinguish animal species and also to help determine genetic differences in species. DNA barcoding can be especially useful when working with spiders since they tend to be very small and hard to distinguish. However, achieving a DNA barcode can be difficult and thus techniques to improve the method of DNA barcoding can be helpful. This research looked into the different …

The Increasing Weight Of Regulation: Countries Combat The Global Obesity Epidemic, Emily Whelan Parento, Allyn L. Taylor, Laura A. Schmidt

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

Obesity is a global epidemic, exacting an enormous human and economic toll. In the absence of a comprehensive global governance strategy, states have increasingly employed a wide array of legal strategies targeting the drivers of obesity. This Article identifies recent global trends in obesity-related legislation and makes the normative case for an updated global governance strategy. National governments have responded to the epidemic both by strengthening traditional interventions and by developing novel legislative strategies. This response consists of nine important trends: (1) strengthened and tailored tax measures; (2) broadened use of counter-advertising and health campaigns; (3) expanded food labeling; (4) …

A Novel Function For Fancj Helicase In Microsatellite Stabilization During Replication Stress, Joanna Barthelemy Jan 2015

A Novel Function For Fancj Helicase In Microsatellite Stabilization During Replication Stress, Joanna Barthelemy

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Noncanonical DNA structure-forming sequences, such as hairpin structures, stall replication forks in vivo, expand or contract during DNA replication, and colocalize with chromosome fragile sites. Since the frequency of hairpin formation is higher than the frequency of expansion or contraction, the cell may possess mechanisms to resolve hairpin structures prior to replication fork stalling. One possible activity for hairpin resolution is the FANCJ DNA helicase, known to unwind noncanoncial DNA structures in vitro. Indeed, mutations or loss of any of the nineteen FANC genes, including FANCJ, leads to genome instability and the cancer-prone syndrome Fanconi anemia (FA). To test whether …

A Far-Field Radio Frequency Experimental Exposure System And 31 Day Exposure Experiment On Understanding Mice, Jared William Hansen Jan 2015

A Far-Field Radio Frequency Experimental Exposure System And 31 Day Exposure Experiment On Understanding Mice, Jared William Hansen

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Many studies have been performed on exploring the effects of radio frequency energy on biological function in vivo. In particular, gene expression results have been inconclusive due, in part, to a lack of a standardized experimental procedure. This thesis describes a new far field RF exposure system for unrestrained murine models that reduces experimental error and a 31 day experiment using mice in vivo. The experiment uses whole body exposure to continuous RF energy at 2.45 GHz on unrestrained, in vivo mice. Using RNA-seq to analyze the entire murine genome, the data is statistically analyzed using combinations and empirical p-values. …

Aphid Interactions With Environmental Variation In The Field And Lab, Erin Leigh Mclean Jan 2015

Aphid Interactions With Environmental Variation In The Field And Lab, Erin Leigh Mclean

Entomology

A basic tenet of ecology is that organisms are affected by both abiotic factors and other organisms; therefore, there is value in understanding interactions in our changing world. Aphids are model organisms for questions regarding many interactions. I explored three aphid-centered studies. (1) Rearing aphids in a certain temperature changed their response to exposure to different temperatures. Short term exposure to warmer temperatures increased fecundity, but being raised in higher temperatures lowered fecundity across treatments. (2) Feeding on aphids by lady beetles in the lab was measured after exposure to varying temperatures with or without prey. Warming without prey was …

A Comparison Of Two Low-Stakes Methods For Administering A Program-Level Biology Concept Assessment, Brian A. Couch, Jennifer K. Knight Jan 2015

A Comparison Of Two Low-Stakes Methods For Administering A Program-Level Biology Concept Assessment, Brian A. Couch, Jennifer K. Knight

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Concept assessments are used commonly in undergraduate science courses to assess student learning and diagnose areas of student difficulty. While most concept assessments align with the content of individual courses or course topics, some concept assessments have been developed for use at the programmatic level to gauge student progress and achievement over a series of courses or an entire major. The broad scope of a program-level assessment, which exceeds the content of any single course, creates several test administration issues, including finding a suitable time for students to take the assessment and adequately incentivizing student participation. These logistical considerations must …

Green And Energy-Efficient Methods For The Production Of Metallic Nanoparticles, Mitra Naghdi, Mehrdad Taheran, Satinder K. Brar, M. Verma, R. Y. Surampalli, J. R. Valero

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

In the last decade, researchers paid great attention to the concept of “Green Chemistry”, which aims at development of efficient methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) in terms of the least possible impact on human life and environment. Generally, several reagents including precursors, reducing agents, stabilizing agents and solvents are used for the production of NPs and in some cases, energy is needed to reach the optimum temperature for reduction. Therefore, to develop a green approach, researchers had the opportunity to investigate eco-friendly reagents and new energy transfer techniques. In order to substitute the harmful reagents with green ones, …
