The latest volley in the war of words waged by cultured despisers of Christianity was fired on Christmas Day. Celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of the television series "Cosmos," bushwhacked Christians with this tweeted broadside: "On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world. Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642."
Not content with just one shot, Tyson let fly again. "Merry Christmas to all," he tweeted. "A Pagan holiday (BC) becomes a Religious holiday (AD). Which then becomes a Shopping holiday (USA)."
Then, the coup de grace. "QUESTION: This …

First Families; The Genesis Account, William Paul Haas
First Families; The Genesis Account, William Paul Haas
Community Scholar Publications
The Book of Genesis is principally a description of the emergence of interconnected families with specific relationships such as husband and wife, husband and wife-surrogate ( distinct from prostitutes and harlots ) sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, fathers-sons-daughters-in-law.
Love, loyalty, fidelity and affection appear often and in many forms, but no family portrayed in Genesis appears as immune to exploitation, manipulation, trickery, treachery, lust, hatred or murder. Both men and women are seen as active forces in the destiny of these troubled families, for good and ill. We ourselves still bear a likeness to these ancient portraits and many …

Annotated Bibliography Of Elsie Singmaster’S Gettysburg Writings, Susan Colestock Hill
Adams County History
Our fellow Adams Countian, Elsie Singmaster Lewars (1879-1958), was a well -known author of regional fiction during the first half of the twentieth century. She wrote about the people and places she knew first hand. She spent most of her first twenty years in an ethnic Pennsylvania German community, Macungie, Pennsylvania. Having descended on her father’s side from Pennsylvania Germans who settled in the eastern part of the state beginning in the eighteenth century, she understood “her people” because she lived among them. When she began to write for publication in 1905, her first characters and plots drew upon her …

Van Gogh's Ghost Paintings: Chapters 1-3, Cliff Edwards
Van Gogh's Ghost Paintings: Chapters 1-3, Cliff Edwards
World Studies Publications
One of the most significant and revealing paintings by the world famous artist Vincent van Gogh was never seen by anyone but the artist himself. The painting was so important to the artist that he painted it twice. He was so conflicted about the painting that he destroyed it twice. Cliff Edwards argues these two unique paintings Vincent created and destroyed are at least as important to understanding the artist and his work as are the two thousand or more paintings and drawings that do exist. In Van Gogh's Ghost Paintings, Edwards invites his readers on a journey that …

One of the challenges of the liturgical readings from Scripture is for them to stay fresh—that is, for us, hearing them many times in a lifetime, to continue to listen to them deeply. We may, subconsciously, feel we know them and have little left to learn. An opposite situation arises from the discourse around the so-called new cosmology, where the language and concepts may seem so strange—even forbidding—to us that we can’t find a way in. The very unfamiliarity of the science and philosophy, the geology and physics, may close our ears to what is offered there for us.

Book Review: Jacob’S Wealth: An Examination Into The Nature And Role Of Material Possessions In The Jacob-Cycle (Gen 25:19-35:29), Roger S. Nam
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Excerpt: "In a revised doctoral dissertation under Drs. Ernest Lucas and Gordon Wenham (Bristol, 2008), Paul Vrolijk explores the motif of wealth in the Jacob-cycle. By analyzing the multiple references to bless ing, narrations of economic exchange and prominent regard to "the land,” Vrolijk attempts to better understand the role of material blessing in the portrayal of Jacob in hopes that such understanding can provide new perspectives on the patriarchal narratives. Vrolijk intentionally restricts his parameters: "In this study, I will limit myself to investi- gating the Jacob-cycle (Gen 25:19-55:29) and in particular the role of wealth within it” (6). …

From Patristics To Postmodernity: Does A Message Still Exist?, Douglas Taylor
From Patristics To Postmodernity: Does A Message Still Exist?, Douglas Taylor
Other Graduate Scholarship
Dr. David Wheeler once advised that while not all are called to be an evangelist, all Christians are called to be evangelical. Although some may counter that postmodernity is waning, the question remains how one might be evangelical in a postmodern world. The concept that no metanarrative exists has been one of the pillars of postmodernity, and as such challenges the premise that Scripture contains an overarching story encompassing all of mankind. If Dr. Wheeler was correct, and all are called to be evangelical, then the question that would seem to require answering is how one might begin to address …

American Unitarians And The George B. English Controversy, Bradley Kime
American Unitarians And The George B. English Controversy, Bradley Kime
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
In late September 1813, a Harvard graduate named George Bethune English published an attack on the historical evidences of Christianity titled The Grounds of Christianity Examined, by Comparing the New Testament with the Old. English denied the relevance of miracles and argued that Jesus's claims to divine authority hinged solely on his fulfillment of Messianic prophecies. Only by twisting such prophecies beyond their obvious meanings, English argued, could Christians conceivably claim that Jesus fulfilled them. In their own day, the apostles and Evangelists did just that-misapplying the prophecies to Jesus either out of ignorance or dishonesty. In either case, …
