“I Myself Am An Israelite”: Revisiting Paul’S Use Of Ζῆλος In Romans 9-11, Benjamin J. Lappenga
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Previous attempts to account for Paul’s language of ζῆλος in Romans 9-11 focus too narrowly on the occurrence in 10:2 (Dane C. Ortlund [2012]), rely on a difficult distinction between παραζηλόω as “provoke to anger” in 10:19 and παραζηλόω as “emulate” in 11:11, 14 (Richard H. Bell [1994]), or wrongly insist that the meaning of παραζηλόω in 10:19-11:14 must be restricted to its semantic value in Deut 32:21 LXX (Robert Jewett [2007]). A way forward is to recognize—by harnessing insights recently formulated within the framework of relevance theory—that the ζηλ- word group in Paul’s usage is monosemic. Within this framework, …

Singing The Bible: The Impact Of Haik-Vantoura’S Theory, Hannah Lambert, Shon Hopkin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The use of liturgical music is common to several faiths in today’s society. The purpose of this project was to shed light on the origins and development of cantillation marks in the Hebrew bible and on the development of liturgical music in post-biblical time. Most importantly, this project’s chief purpose was to analyze and demonstrate the impact of Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura’s proposal regarding cantillation on Jewish and Christian liturgical and worship music.
Reevaluating The Bronze And Iron Age Ceramic Evidence Of Biblical Hebron, Christina Nelson, Jeffrey Chadwick
Reevaluating The Bronze And Iron Age Ceramic Evidence Of Biblical Hebron, Christina Nelson, Jeffrey Chadwick
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As the home to several Old Testament prophets such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and King David, Hebron holds a significant role in the biblical narrative and history of the Israelites. Today, the modern city of Hebron is located in the hill country of Judah, most known for the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the Cave of Machpelah. Fifty years ago the site of Tell er-Rumeide/Hebron was excavated by Philip C. Hammond as the American Expedition to Hebron (AEH). He excavated between the years of 1964-1966 until the war of 1967 necessitated his withdrawal. Dr. Hammond willed to Jeffrey R. …
P-12 The Role Of The Gift-Giving Spirit In Numbers 11, Jeanmark Kessler
P-12 The Role Of The Gift-Giving Spirit In Numbers 11, Jeanmark Kessler
Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs
Current scholarship analyzes spiritual gifts predominantly from Acts 2, Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4. With the assumption that the Holy Spirit belongs to the Godhead and His actions are constant and persistent throughout Scripture, this study develops an Old Testament perspective on the Holy Spirit’s role as gift-giver. This exegetical research investigates Numbers 11:16-29 as the key passage, where the Holy Spirit bestows His gifts upon Israel’s leaders. In addition, the valid connections between Numbers 11 and 2 Kings 2 provide a broader and more consistent contextual interpretation of spiritual gifts within the Old Testament.

Disillusionment: An Unexpected Friend Of Spiritual Formation, Alicia Britt Chole
Disillusionment: An Unexpected Friend Of Spiritual Formation, Alicia Britt Chole
Doctor of Ministry
Is spiritual disillusionment a foe or a friend? Avoidable or inevitable? A failure or a teacher? Our answer will greatly impact our spiritual journeys. This dissertation defines spiritual disillusionment as the act (-ment) of removing (dis-) false spiritual ideas (illusions), and explores the origin, substance, and purpose of spiritual disillusionment through the insights of scholars and Christian writings. Far from being a foe, spiritual disillusionment is a welcome, ancient ally of spiritual formation.
Throughout the ages, mystics have viewed disillusionment as a wise mentor toward intimacy with God. By abrasively removing layers of inaccuracy and self- protection, spiritual disillusionment can …
Return To Political Theology, Joshua D. Hawley
Return To Political Theology, Joshua D. Hawley

There was a time when theology was called the "queen of the sciences." From the beginnings of the university in the High Middle Ages through the nineteenth century, theology formed the backbone of liberal instruction at institutions of higher learning. Those days are long past. What remains of theological investigation in most major American universities has been trans- posed into the study of religion and safely sequestered in "religious studies" departments. Few undergraduates today encounter theology as a discipline-and as for law students, well, the idea that theology might have some relevance for the study of law is regarded in …

Affective creative skills such as fluency, flexibility, originality, divergent thinking, curiosity, imagination and many more skills allow for change and transformation within an individual. Behavioral skills are the actions or steps that …

Covenant Relationships And The Editing Of The Hebrew Psalter : An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Davidic Covenant And The Abrahamic And Mosaic Convenants As Reflected In The Editing Of The Psalter, Adam Daniel Hensley
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Hensley, Adam, D. "Covenant Relationships and the Editing of the Hebrew Psalter: An Investigation of the Relationship between the Davidic Covenant and the Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenants as Reflected in the Editing of the Psalter." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2015. 386 pp.
This dissertation examines the relationship between the Davidic covenant and Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants as it is reflected in the editorial shape and shaping of the Masoretic Psalter. It hypothesizes that editors understood these covenants as a theological unity, whose common fulfillment centers on the anticipated royal successor of David. The promises and obligations of the covenants would …

Jesus, Mark, Paul, And John Said What? The Evolution Of Deliberately Puzzling Material In The New Testament, Scott Gambrill Sinclair
Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions
The deliberately puzzling sayings of Jesus pose both historical and theological problems. When Jesus said that we must hate our father and mother to be his disciple or that if we only had a tiny amount of faith we could move a mountain, there is the historical problem of what he could possibly have meant and why he chose to express himself so strangely. There is also the theological problem of how Christians are to apply this material today. Do such statements make sense in our own lives, and should Christians today imitate Jesus in speaking in enigmas?

The Open Mind: Essays In Honour Of Christopher Rowland, Kevin Sullivan
IWU Authors Bookshelf
Edited by Jonathan Knight and Kevin Sullivan, this Festschrift draws on the research interests of Christopher Rowland. The collection of essays comes from former doctoral students and other friends, many of whom shed light on the angelic contribution to the thought-world of developing Christianity. The significance of the Jewish contribution to developing Christian ideology is critically assessed, including the impact of the original Jewish sources on the earliest Christian belief.

Psalms In Our Lamentable World, Don Saliers
Psalms In Our Lamentable World, Don Saliers
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Where are worshipers in Christian communities to go with their experiences and observations of violence, injustice, and other forms of suffering? Historically, a central source of realistic faith-based responses to tragedy has been the Psalter, broadly defined as a set of biblical psalms arranged by date to be individually and collectively read, sung, and prayed. Recent scholarship on psalms has focused on lament and complaint, and questions regarding the presence of trauma and violence in religious traditions have shown such psalms to be particularly relevant to contemporary culture.
This article examines three “psalms of lament,” Psalms 13, 42/43, and 88, …
God's Focus On The Fatherless: A Lens To Inform Spiritual Impact In The Local Church, Dwight David Croy
God's Focus On The Fatherless: A Lens To Inform Spiritual Impact In The Local Church, Dwight David Croy
Doctor of Ministry
This study concentrates on God’s focus on and vision for the fatherless as an informal lens from which local churches may measure and implement ministry impact and outreach principles. As a pastor and a military chaplain, I see many young people who are fatherless to the third and fourth generation. The ministry of the present day Church is limiting its impact because it does not see the fatherless as God sees them. Here the question is asked, “What in God’s exhortation of supporting the fatherless are churches to incarnationally infuse into their local outreach to the community?” The claim is …
The Buzz About The Church: Re-Imagining Discipleship Through A Theology Of Beekeeping, Matthew Todd Thomas
The Buzz About The Church: Re-Imagining Discipleship Through A Theology Of Beekeeping, Matthew Todd Thomas
Doctor of Ministry
"The Buzz About The Church: Re-Imagining Discipleship Through a Theology of Beekeeping", creates and awareness of the root problems of why the church has not passed on its sacred faith to future generations. Historically, some contributors to non-transmission have been Gnosticism, the Enlightenment, Consumerism and Moralistic Therapeutic Deism. The dissertation also focuses on movements which have sprung up in response to a declining church like the Emergent Church Movement and Missional Church Movement.
This dissertation argues the solution to the problem is reestablishment of the practice of discipleship as Jesus modeled. Beekeeping is used to reimagine the model of discipleship. …

Orphic Powers In J.R.R. Tolkien's Legend Of Beren And Lúthien, Jane Beal Phd
Orphic Powers In J.R.R. Tolkien's Legend Of Beren And Lúthien, Jane Beal Phd
Journal of Tolkien Research
In “Orphic Powers in Tolkien’s Legend of Beren and Lúthien,” I consider three interrelated strands that influenced the development of Tolkien’s most precious story: Tolkien’s own life experience, sources from classical mythology and medieval literature, and the hope inherent to the Christian faith, especially for resurrection and eternal life, as symbolized in the Parable of the Pearl of Great Price. This study suggests that Tolkien’s relationship to his wife, Edith, inspires the legend and renders it a psychological allegory. Three Ovidian tales from classical mythology that were later re-told in medieval literature also influence it: the rape of Philomela, the …
