Resiliency And Self-Care For Pastors In Japan Facing A Disaster, John G. Houlette
Resiliency And Self-Care For Pastors In Japan Facing A Disaster, John G. Houlette
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For Japanese pastors facing a disaster, exercising resiliency and self-care is an enormous task as clergy deal with varying disaster-related attitudes, impact within the church and overwhelming need and opportunity in the community. In addition to surveying seminary students, pastors who experienced the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake as well as pastors who lived through the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and seminary professors who train next generation pastors were interviewed using co-inquiry and a 360-degree data gathering approach. Results showed that managing stress, loss, relationships, compassion fatigue and burnout were common challenges. The data indicated that practicing resilient leadership entails …
Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Section: Provider Perspectives And Maternal Decision Making, Isabella Chan, Emily Bronson, Allison Cantor
Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Section: Provider Perspectives And Maternal Decision Making, Isabella Chan, Emily Bronson, Allison Cantor
Florida Public Health Review
Although evidence suggests vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) leads to fewer complications in subsequent pregnancies, lower risk of maternal morbidity, and fewer cesarean sections overall, VBAC rates in Florida are at 5.5%, notably lower than the U.S. average of 8.0%. This exploratory study examines the factors contributing to these low VBAC rates through a qualitative investigation using grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews with women and maternity care providers were conducted to explore attitudes, motivations, and experiences regarding VBAC. Findings reveal a distinction between providers' and women's attitudes toward and experiences with VBAC and identify factors involved in decision-making. Three themes …

Sexual Risk, Substance Use And Undiagnosed Seropositivity Among Men Who Have Sex With Men And Women In Miami, Florida, David W. Forrest, Gabriel Cardenas, Lisa R. Metsch, Charlene S. Dodson, Marlene Lalota
Florida Public Health Review
This paper utilizes the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance data in Miami for the men who have sex with men cycle (NHBS-MSM2) in 2008. We analyzed sexual risk, substance use and undiagnosed seropositivity in a diverse sample of men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) and compared them with MSM. Of 152 MSMW, 15.1% tested HIV positive with 73.9% previously undiagnosed. Almost half (44.1%) of the MSMW reported unprotected sex with male and female partners in the past year. More MSMW than MSM had undiagnosed HIV infection, exchanged sex for money or drugs, used crack and cocaine, been high …

An Anatomical Study Of The Supratrochlear Foramen Of The Jining Population, Jing Li, Qinghua Mao, Wenyuan Li, Xiaoyan Li
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The supratrochlear foramen (STF) is an important variation in the lower end of the humerus where the septum separating the coronoid and olecranon fossa is perforated. There are no studies in the literature on the STF of the Jining population. This study will make a contribution to anatomy and anthropology by adding new data. Materials and methods: STF was studied in detail in 262 adult dried humeri of unknown sex and age. The topographical anatomy of the STF was studied, morphometric measurements were taken, and the specimens were photographed with a digital camera. Results: The prevalence of the STF …

In the light of this analysis, the experiences of the five student teachers’ were examined in detail to gain a deeper understanding of how they had become social …
Strengthening Learners’ Perspectives In Professional Standards To Restore Relationality As Central To Teaching, Jeana A. Kriewaldt
Strengthening Learners’ Perspectives In Professional Standards To Restore Relationality As Central To Teaching, Jeana A. Kriewaldt
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Australian teacher standards have effects on what is thought about teachers’ work. Just as teacher standards give expression to some characteristics of quality teaching, so too do students’ views if solicited and made public, yet the archive of teaching standards pays little attention to learners’ perspectives. This paper uses a theoretical framework informed by Foucauldian discourse analysis to contribute to a critical deliberation of how the diminished account of learners’ perspectives sidelines the relational aspects of teaching and learning which are thus placed as inferior—as having a low ranking—in this pervasive standards-driven policy arena. In this qualitative study, exploring discourses …

Maximising Intercultural Learning In Short Term International Placements: Findings Associated With Orientation Programs, Guided Reflection And Immersion., Coral J.L. Campbell, Caroline Walta
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Short-term international practicum experience is now a feature of many university education programs in Australia in an attempt to engage students with the growing multi-cultural aspects of Australian life. The stated purposes of such practicum experiences generally highlight intercultural learning, which is associated with the development of intercultural sensitivity, cultural identity, global citizenship and global competence. This paper tracks and documents the early and developing attitudes and dispositions of a group of pre-service teachers (PSTs) and academic staff who were engaged with the pilot project of a pre-service placement in Malaysian secondary schools. The behaviours associated with intercultural learning are …

Religiosity And Social Problems Among Muslim Adolescents In Southern Thailand, Suhaimee Sateemae, Tarik Abdel-Monem, Mahsoom Sateemae
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
Substantial commentary has been written about the historical context of the Malay-Muslim minority in the deep south of Thailand. Much of the recent scholarship on the Malay-Muslim minority of Thailand has focused on the ongoing ethnic insurgency in southern Thailand, the region’s troubled history of annexation, and its relevance to Thailand’s political landscape. However, there is little empirical research on the Malay-Muslim population itself, although it is assumed that expressions of their religious identity are a fundamental aspect of collective identity formation. In an effort to fill this gap, this study explored perceptions of religiosity and risk behavior among Muslim …

The discovery of dipteran remains on mummified individuals can lead to either cause for curatorial concern or to a better understanding of the individual’s post-mortem environment. The present study analyzed insect remains associated with the body of a unique medieval mummy of religious significance, that of the Blessed Antonio Patrizi da Monticiano. A total of 79 puparia were examined and all were identified as Ophyra capensis (Diptera: Muscidae). Additionally, a desiccated moth (Lepidoptera: Tineidae) was encountered. Puparia of O. capensis would be associated with normal decomposition shortly after the death of the mummified individual, and not an infestation beginning during …

The Last Fossil Primate In North America, New Material Of The Enigmatic Ekgmowechashala From The Arikareean Of Oregon, Joshua X. Samuels, L. Barry Albright, Theodore J. Fremd
United States National Park Service: Publications
OBJECTIVE: Primates were common in North America through most of the Eocene, but vanished in the Chadronian, about 35 million years ago. In the Arikareean, about 6 million years later, the enigmatic primate Ekgmowechashala appeared in the Great Plains and Oregon. This taxon shows little resemblance to other North American primates and its phylogenetic position has long been debated. New material of this taxon allows a revised assessment of its age and how it is related to other primates.
METHODS: Recently collected Ekgmowechashala specimens from the Turtle Cove Member of the John Day Formation in Oregon are described. These specimens …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This study explored student learning in the context of innovative biotechnology curricula and the effects of gaming as a central element of the learning experience. The quasi-experimentally designed study compared learning outcomes between two curricular approaches: one built around a computer-based game and the other built around a narrative case. The research questions addressed student learning of basic biological principles, development of interest in learning science, and how a game-based approach compared to a nongame-based approach in terms of supporting learning. The study employed a pre-post design with 1,888 high school students nested within the classes of 36 biology teachers. …

Fossil Population Structure And Mortality Analysis Of The Cave Bears From Urşilor Cave, North-Western Romania, Marius Robu
KIP Articles
Research in cave bear palaeobiology focusing on population structure and mortality analysis may improve our understanding regarding the ecology of this species which vanished at the end of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3, prior to Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), if assessed populations are large enough. Such population is available in Urşilor Cave, from north-western Romania, known as one of the most rich and complex European MIS3 cave bear sites. From the palaeontological excavation, situated at the lower level of the cave (= Scientific Reserve), more than 210 cave bear isolated lower molars, 160 mandibles and almost 180 canines were extracted …

Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Behaviors Of Diabetes Among Afro-Caribbeans Near Brooklyn, Sophia I. Allen
Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Behaviors Of Diabetes Among Afro-Caribbeans Near Brooklyn, Sophia I. Allen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Literature has found that some minority groups with diabetes have a negative perception of medical professionals when a health problem occurs. This trend is particularly problematic with the diabetes epidemic in the United States. African Americans are more than 2 times as likely to die from diabetes than are Whites, and diabetes prevalence has increased exponentially in New York City where a majority of Afro-Caribbeans live. To address this problem, a cross-sectional design was used to recruit Afro-Caribbeans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes across 7 churches to examine whether shared knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors about diabetes screening and its …

This semester, we will use two texts created with different goals in mind to understand the value of an evolutionary perspective, the pathways of hominin evolution from primates to premodern hominins to Homo sapiens. Our primary goal, one that emerges from the list of smaller goals that appears below, is to learn to use physical anthropology and its ideas, concepts, and points of view, to interpret contemporary human diversity. This course, combined with ANTH 2052 (Introduction to Cultural Anthropology), should prepare you to take more advanced courses in UNO’s Anthropology Department (where our focus is on cultural, urban anthropology). Pseudoscientific ‘theories’ on supposed mysteries in the ancient and modern worlds have found increased audiences through both the Internet and through other forms of mass media. This course examines such theories with particular reference to the use and misuse of archaeological data to promote sensationalist agendas. Topics will include ancient astronauts and alien technologies, lost continents and races, the ‘first’ Americans, pyramids, cryptozoology (including Bigfoot, the chupacabra, and assorted sea monsters), Forteana and ‘unnatural’ natural phenomena, ancient astronomy, conspiracy theories, archaeology and the occult, archaeology and the Bible, doomsdays and catastrophes, and more. The course will also focus upon differentiating …

Long before it was fashionable to talk about “celebrating difference” or about “cultural diversity,” anthropologists sought to explain the complex ways of being that make up human societies. From an anthropological perspective, “culture” is far more than the ethnic foods, music or linguistic habits that we have come to see as indicators of diversity in the United States. A culture is a whole way of life, including everyday activities as well as language, religion and government. The first objective of this course is to provide an introduction to some of the ways anthropologists approach the study of cultures. Anthropology is, …

This course will introduce you to core concepts, debates, and methods in the field of Cultural Anthropology - one of the four “subfields” of the discipline of Anthropology. Among the many questions we will explore this semester are: What are the various ways in which human beings organize ourselves into families and romantic and sexual relationships? What sorts of political and economic systems do we create? How do we define emotions, and communicate our needs and desires? How do we produce our food and assign meaning to our consumption of it? Keep in mind that as much as this course …

This course offers a survey of world archaeology, from evidence for the earliest humans to the civilizations of the ancient Near East and Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The methods and tools used by archaeologists will be introduced, as will major themes in archaeological theory and in the history of the discipline. Particular archaeological culture areas and groups will serve as examples through which to critically explore archaeological inference: how we know what we think we know about the past. In addition, contemporary issues and new data on a wide range of archaeological issues will be discussed, including hominid …
