The technological progress of the nineteenth century made travelling across the seas and the publishing of travel narratives both possible and desirable. Women used this as an opportunity to gain greater freedom of mobility and authorship. Instead of focusing on solitary travelers, this dissertation brings to the forefront the elaborate rhetoric and discourse strategies married women travel writers used in their narrative to transcend their husband's shadow. The British Lady Florence Dixie (1855-1905), the Argentine Eduarda Mansilla de García (1834-1892), and the American Elizabeth Cabot Agassiz (1822-1907) are pionner women that accompany their husbands on travels to foreign lands and …
Cultural Considerations In Forensic Science In The United States, Suzanna K. Taylor, Wayne P. Bergeron
Cultural Considerations In Forensic Science In The United States, Suzanna K. Taylor, Wayne P. Bergeron
Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy
Does the cultural context of any criminal justice element, ranging from the crime victim to the forensic science expert, have any impact on the pursuit of justice? Is forensic science completely free of cultural adulteration? Two dimensions of the cultural consideration variable this paper focuses on are (1), what areas of forensic analysis need to be considered to prevent, or at least, diminish cultural offenses in processing crime scenes and forensic evidence, and (2) the need of forensic science professionals and organizations to adopt a consistent scientific culture in processing and analyzing evidence (particularly in DNA analysis). While many empirical …

First Graders As Sensitive Social Partners And Skilled Readers, Zaira R. Arvelo Alicea
Open Access Dissertations
This mixed methods dissertation is guided by a sociocultural framework and a pragmatist stance to contribute to early literacy scholarship about minority children. In particular, I explore the relationship between low socioeconomic status Puerto Rican children’s reading experience and their social cognition by: (1) assessing them through quantitative and qualitative measures that reveal their capacities in these areas at the end of their first grade year, and (2) documenting their reading experiences at home and at school through ethnographic qualitative methods. The analyses revealed significant positive correlations between the tests of reading and social understanding, a scarcity of conventional reading …

Prevalence Of Malaria And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency In Malaria-Endemic Southwestern Uganda: Implications For Primaquine Use, Michelle Roh
Public Health Theses
Abstract
Introduction: Malaria transmission in Uganda is remarkably heterogeneous, and declines in prevalence have not been uniform. Previous surveys in southwestern Uganda have shown declines in parasite prevalence from 2004 to 2010. As malaria transmission continues to decline in southwestern Uganda, aggressive strategies, such as the addition of primaquine (PQ) to artemisinin-combination therapies (ACTs), are being considered in low transmission settings. Despite the potential benefit of PQ in reducing transmission, concerns over its safety and efficacy have hampered its deployment. In particular, those with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are at a higher risk of hemolytic toxicity.
Methods: To better assess …
The Psychodynamics Of Sexual Choice, Anne Dailey
The Psychodynamics Of Sexual Choice, Anne Dailey
Faculty Articles and Papers
The right of sexual autonomy now occupies a central place in the scheme of constitutional liberties. Consensual sexual relations, including fornication, adultery, and sodomy, are understood to lie beyond the reach of law 's regulatory power. Yet as described in this Article, some sexual encounters by their very nature are likely to engage unconscious psychological processes that involve troubling levels of vulnerability and coercion. Drawing on psychoanalysis, this Article proceeds by examining three relationships that raise heightened concerns about unconscious impairments in sexual choice. Part I investigates the way in which adult incest may trigger unconscious feelings of submission on …

Foreign Attorneys In U.S. Ll.M. Programs: Who's In, Who's Out, And Who They Are, Mindie Lazarus-Black, Julie L. Globokar
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
In recent decades, there has been a remarkable growth in the number of foreign attorneys enrolled at U.S. law schools and particularly in LL.M. programs. To learn more about these students and how they fare, we conducted research in two law schools, one in the Midwest and the second on the East Coast. We examine the admissions process for foreign attorneys from the perspectives and experiences of both the administrators who make admissions decisions and the students who seek admission. We consider the layered international, national, state, and local laws that complicate the selection process, as well as the standards …

Dibe' Bikee' Deya: Following Sheep In Coal Country, Caitlin A. Piserchia
Dibe' Bikee' Deya: Following Sheep In Coal Country, Caitlin A. Piserchia
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Black Mesa is a mineral-rich area of the Navajo and Hopi Nations in Arizona; it is both the locus of the historic so-called Hopi-Navajo land conflict and the coal mines that have helped make possible the electricity usage of Las Vegas. It is also a case study in cultural change and resistance in response to pressures of industrialization and capitalism. In an interdisciplinary, creative nonfiction writing project, I am looking in particular at the pressures on sheepherding as livelihood in Black Mesa. I will examine how sheepherding has changed since the advent of the Black Mesa and Kayenta coal mines. …

Academic Library Core Collection For Celtic And Roman Religions In Roman Britain, Kim Woodring
ETSU Faculty Works
Presented here is a bibliography representing a core collection on the Celtic and Roman religion in Roman Britain. This religion, which was formed from the mixing of Celtic and Roman religions, was truly a new religion. It was formed from two powerful but different religions. The Celts believed in nature and the power it held within everything in their world. The Romans believed in the power of their pantheon of gods and goddesses. When these two factors merged it produced a religion unlike any other in the world during the Iron Age. This bibliography will list the resources to form …

This essay is a follow up to a previous article “How to Be an Authentic Indian” published in November of 2014 in the California Law Review Circuit. (M. Alexander Pearl, How to Be an Authentic Indian, 5 Cal. L. Rev. Circuit 392 (November 2014). This essay continues the satiric tone of my previous article and focuses on a single nationally relevant issue. With the current media emphasis on the controversy over recent representations of Indians in television and film (such as Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the Adam Sandler written/directed Ridiculous Six), the essay is topical and examines the critiques …

The purpose of the paper is to address what is the impact of the synthesis between Basque history, branding identity and Law 8/1994 on Basque identity in the homeland and Diaspora. Naturally occurring brands combine history, anthropology, sociology, and marketing to explain the phenomenon of communities defined by a sense of place. Focusing on both the Basque Country and Basques in Boise, Idaho as one case study, the authors discuss how the naturally occurring brand and cultural policy of the Basque people became formalized 20 years ago with Law 8/1994. The article addresses who the Basques are and how they …
Well-Being Technologies: Meditation Using Virtual Worlds, Laura Downey
Well-Being Technologies: Meditation Using Virtual Worlds, Laura Downey
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
In a technologically overloaded world, is it possible to use technology to support well-being activities and enhance human flourishing? Proponents of positive technology and positive computing are striving to answer yes to that question. However, the impact of technology on well-being remains unresolved. Positive technology combines technology and positive psychology. Positive psychology focuses on well-being and the science of human flourishing. Positive computing includes an emphasis on designing with well-being in mind as a way to support human potential. User experience (UX) is critical to positive technology and positive computing. UX researchers and practitioners are advocating for experience-driven design and …

Four Narratives Of Cross-Dressing In Twentieth-Century Art : Marcel Duchamp, Claude Cahun, Eleanor Antin, And Diane Torr, Chrisoula Gardiakos
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This essay looks at cross-dressing as a trope in fine art across the twentieth century. The respective contemporaneous discourse that was taking place informed artists Marcel Duchamp, Claude Cahun, Eleanor Antin and Diane Torr's art practice. These separate artistic engagements are referred to as narratives. Duchamp was engaged with the Victorian era's notion of allegorical alchemy, which was widely accepted as an artistic endeavor by many modern artists, and its connection to androgyny. Cahun was engaged in the medical models of homosexuality, which was synonymous with cross-dressing during the early part of the twentieth century and questioned rigid gender roles. …

Antibiotics, The Microbiome, And Immunity : A Case Study In Bangladesh, Carmen Fagnani
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this study was to establish a theoretical impact of antibiotic misuse on the microbiome and its effects on immunity. Recent studies indicate the importance of a microbiome on the immune system. Both the leptin signaling pathways and CD4T cell production are influenced by the microbiome (Mazmanian, et al. 2005). The use of antibiotics has been associated with dysbiosis, a microbial imbalance in the digestive tract. The immune system is limited when the microbiome is dysbiotic.

The Initiation And Maintenance Of The Early Woodland Interaction Sphere (Ca. 3,000-2,000 B.P.) : The View From Six Northeastern Mortuary Sites, Francis Wanton Robinson Iv
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation explores the complex links between long distance exchange, burial elaboration and the potential emergence of social differentiation in formally non-stratified, small-scale societies. The author investigated these inter-related phenomena as they occurred during the Early Woodland period (ca. 3,000-2,000 cal yr BP) in the Northeastern region of the North American Eastern Woodlands. The Early Woodland interaction sphere represents one of the first inter-regional, large-scale exchange networks to ever develop north of Mesoamerica. The reasons and processes behind its genesis continue to be poorly understood, however.
Examining The Craniofacial Biomechanics Of Paranthropus Boisei, Amanda L. Smith
Examining The Craniofacial Biomechanics Of Paranthropus Boisei, Amanda L. Smith
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
An engineering method, finite element analysis (FEA), was used to examine the craniofacial biomechanics of Paranthropus boisei. The craniofacial morphology of Paranthropus boisei exhibits a number of highly derived characteristics that have commonly been thought to be related to feeding. This series of studies includes an ex vivo strain gage study (validation of techniques), an assessment of the effects of intraspecific craniofacial shape variation in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and an examination of the feeding biomechanics of Paranthropus boisei. Modeling experiments were also conducted to test mechanical hypotheses regarding the effects of specific derived craniofacial features on Paranthropus feeding function.
The Biomechanical And Behavioral Significance Of The Neanderthal Femur, Kelli Hamm Tamvada
The Biomechanical And Behavioral Significance Of The Neanderthal Femur, Kelli Hamm Tamvada
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) femur is distinct from that of recent modern humans (Homo sapiens). Broadly speaking, the Neanderthal femur is more "robust", meaning that it appears to be biomechanically stronger, and it is more curved, which may enhance the predictability of the stresses and strains experienced by the bone. It has been hypothesized that the Neanderthal morphology is an adaptation to withstand elevated and repetitive loads associated with increased mobility. This study tests the mobility hypothesis using comparative and biomechanical methods. Specifically, this study sought to test the mobility hypothesis by a) determining whether or not a relationship exists …

The establishment of almshouses in the United States provided a way for states to offer housing to their poor and destitute populations. Throughout the 20th century, most of these establishments changed their function, with many of them morphing into asylums for the mentally insane. Grave assemblages have been collected through archaeological excavations, typically when significant changes are expected to be made to what was once property of the almshouse. This study compares the artifact assemblages of three contemporaneous almshouses: the Oneida and Onondaga County Almshouses of New York State and the Uxbridge Almshouse of Massachusetts. While the associated artifacts are …

The Scottish Pipe Band In North America: Tradition, Transformation, And Transnational Identity, Erin F. Walker
The Scottish Pipe Band In North America: Tradition, Transformation, And Transnational Identity, Erin F. Walker
Theses and Dissertations--Music
For Scots and non-Scots alike, the sounds of the bagpipes and the pipe band serve as a cultural metaphor for Scottish identity: the skirl of the pipes, the crisp sound of the snare drums, and the unique lilt of the music conjure an imagined Scotland of fierce, kilted clansmen and rugged, picturesque Highland scenery. This nearly global association appears to have been constructed on a series of transformations of cultural practices within Scotland itself, as well as throughout greater Britain and the lands of the Scottish diaspora, that began with the early “kiltophiles” in the late eighteenth century. …
