The Psychocultural Foundations Of Religious Revitalization In The Southeast Asian Massif, Jacob R. Hickman
The Psychocultural Foundations Of Religious Revitalization In The Southeast Asian Massif, Jacob R. Hickman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Hmong are a highland ethnic minority group that span the Southeast Asian Massif, including China, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The research funded by this MEG grant was designed to address questions of how Hmong have adapted to distinct social and political circumstances as they have migrated to new locations, including displacement as refugees from Laos to Thailand. In order to cultivate a mentored environment where students could receive close training and help design and carry out substantive research projects, the PI organized an ethnographic field school in a Hmong community for three months during the summer of 2013. The primary …

Together, Apart. A Review Of On (Writing) Families: Autoethnographies Of Presence And Absence, Love And Loss, Edited By Jonathan Wyatt And Tony E. Adams, Jessica Smartt Gullion
The Qualitative Report
In this essay, I offer a review of the book, On (Writing) Families: Autoethnographies of Presence and Absence, Love and Loss, edited by Jonathan Wyatt and Tony E. Adams. An important contribution to the field of authethnography, this book will appeal not only to scholars of family and of qualitative inquiry, but also to people struggling to find meaning in the crazy complexities of family relationships.

Inclusive Fitness And Differential Productivity Across The Life Course Determine Intergenerational Transfers In A Small-Scale Human Society, Paul L. Hooper, Michael Gurven, Jeffrey Winking, Hillard Kaplan
Inclusive Fitness And Differential Productivity Across The Life Course Determine Intergenerational Transfers In A Small-Scale Human Society, Paul L. Hooper, Michael Gurven, Jeffrey Winking, Hillard Kaplan
ESI Publications
Transfers of resources between generations are an essential element in current models of human life-history evolution accounting for prolonged development, extended lifespan and menopause. Integrating these models with Hamilton’s theory of inclusive fitness, we predict that the interaction of biological kinship with the age-schedule of resource production should be a key driver of intergenerational transfers. In the empirical case of Tsimane’ forager–horticulturalists in Bolivian Amazonia, we provide a detailed characterization of net transfers of food according to age, sex, kinship and the net need of donors and recipients. We show that parents, grandparents and siblings provide significant net downward transfers …

Kierkegaard's Aesthetic Life View In Elliott Smith's Either/Or, Cami Richey
Kierkegaard's Aesthetic Life View In Elliott Smith's Either/Or, Cami Richey
BYU English Symposium
When Elliott Smith, the tragic pop acoustic singer songwriter from Portland, titled his third album Either/Or, he was deliberately linking himself to Søren Kierkegaard, the existentialist philosopher of mid-1800s Copenhagen, and his book with the same title. Yet when people talk about the connection, they usually conclude that the depressed Smith was simply attracted to the musings of a depressed Kierkegaard, as if their depression was the only similarity. However, I propose that with the allusive title, Smith begs us to compare the content and form of both works, to not just see Kierkegaard as some vague figure who …

A Critical Analysis Of The British Horseracing Authority’S Review Of The Use Of The Whip In Horseracing, Bidda Jones, Jed Goodfellow, James Yeates, Paul Mcgreevy
Sport and Working Animal Welfare Collection
There is increasing controversy about the use of the whip as a performance aid in Thoroughbred horseracing and its impact on horse welfare. This paper offers a critical analysis of the British Horseracing Authority’s (BHA) 2011 Report Responsible Regulation: A Review of the Use of the Whip in Horseracing. It examines the BHA’s process of consultation and use of science and public opinion research through the application of current scientific literature and legal analysis. This analysis suggests that the BHA’s findings on the welfare impact and justification for whip use are insufficiently defended by the report. These findings indicate that …

Estimating Vertex Measures In Social Networks By Sampling Completions Of Rds Trees, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski, Ric Curtis, Travis Wendel
Estimating Vertex Measures In Social Networks By Sampling Completions Of Rds Trees, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski, Ric Curtis, Travis Wendel
Publications and Research
This paper presents a new method for obtaining network properties from incomplete data sets. Problems associated with missing data represent well-known stumbling blocks in Social Network Analysis. The method of “estimating connectivity from spanning tree completions” (ECSTC) is specifically designed to address situations where only spanning tree(s) of a network are known, such as those obtained through respondent driven sampling (RDS). Using repeated random completions derived from degree information, this method forgoes the usual step of trying to obtain final edge or vertex rosters, and instead aims to estimate network-centric properties of vertices probabilistically from the spanning trees themselves. In …
Melding Data Collection Methodology With Community Assistance: Benefits To Both Researchers And The Indigenous Groups They Study, Douglas S. London
Melding Data Collection Methodology With Community Assistance: Benefits To Both Researchers And The Indigenous Groups They Study, Douglas S. London
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
I present a description of a model of melding data collection with community aid in the form of health educator training that emerged in the process of research collaboration during 2009-2011 with the Kawymeno Waorani foragers of Amazonian Ecuador. Some guidelines are suggested as to how benefits to both parties might be achieved when collecting data with indigenous populations. In this article I describe some of the advantages and pitfalls of melding data collection and community aid with research when collaborating with vulnerable indigenous groups.

Landscape Legacies Of Sugarcane Monoculture At Betty's Hope Plantation, Antigua, West Indies, Suzanna M. Pratt
Landscape Legacies Of Sugarcane Monoculture At Betty's Hope Plantation, Antigua, West Indies, Suzanna M. Pratt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sugarcane cultivation has played a key role in the development of the Caribbean since the seventeenth century A.D. The Eastern Caribbean island of Antigua in the West Indies was almost exclusively dedicated to sugarcane monoculture from the mid-1600s until its independence from Britain in 1981. This research seeks to better understand the landscape legacies left by long-term sugarcane monoculture at the site of Betty's Hope Plantation in Antigua. This study creates a 400-year simulation of crop yields using the USDA's Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC), and evaluates the simulated trajectory of landscape change using historical information about the plantation's agricultural …
