Engaging-Up: Compromised Spaces And Potential Partners, Jennifer Necole Webb Mar 2015

Engaging-Up: Compromised Spaces And Potential Partners, Jennifer Necole Webb

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The anthropology of public policy critically examines policy and its processes and the myriad ways in which power is exercised. To explore these power dynamics, anthropologists studying policy often study up, or study through a particular policy field. This entails the risky work of studying powerful people, whose ability to retaliate against the researcher and others create methodological and ethical dilemmas and contradictions, as well as potentially harmful consequences. Politicians, bureaucrats, employees of powerful non-profits, and, in the public-private neoliberal reality, even the head decision makers within corporations are all prospective research participants--an intimidating prospect for most anthropologists. In contrast, …

Community-Edifying 'World-Construction' In Paul And 1 Clement As A Resource For Theological Deliberations About Human Origins, Benjamin J. Lappenga Mar 2015

Community-Edifying 'World-Construction' In Paul And 1 Clement As A Resource For Theological Deliberations About Human Origins, Benjamin J. Lappenga

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Recognizing that the rhetorical context for the cosmological reflections of both Paul and one of his earliest interpreters is the promotion of community-building, this paper proposes that the “world-construction” of these early believers offers a model for the contemporary church’s discourse concerning human origins. The paper, then, is an exercise in theological interpretation of Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15, read alongside one of the earliest interactions with these texts in the letter known as 1 Clement.

Urbanization, climate, and ecosystem change represent major challenges for managing water resources. Although water systems are complex, a need exists for a generalized representation of these systems to identify important components and linkages to guide scientific inquiry and aid water management. We developed an integrated Structure-Actor-Water framework (iSAW) to facilitate the understanding of and transitions to sustainable water systems. Our goal was to produce an interdisciplinary framework for water resources research that could address management challenges across scales (e.g., plot to region) and domains (e.g., water supply and quality, transitioning, and urban landscapes). The framework was designed to be generalizable …

An Application Of Social Network Analysis On Military Strategy, System Networks And The Phases Of War, Thomas S. Furman Mar 2015

An Application Of Social Network Analysis On Military Strategy, System Networks And The Phases Of War, Thomas S. Furman

Theses and Dissertations

The research developed in this study will utilize Social Network and Graph Theory terminology and methodology applied to groups of systems, rather than individuals within a given system, in order to shape strategic level goals. With regard to military operations, Social Network Analysis has been used to show that enemy networks and relationships can be accurately represented using weighted layers with weighted relationships in order to identify the key player(s) that must be influenced and/or removed so that a particular effect on the enemy might be realized. Social Network Analysis is therefore a significant tool concerning tactical level of operations …

Schapiro, Semiotics And Iconography, Xin Gao Mar 2015

Schapiro, Semiotics And Iconography, Xin Gao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

During the 20th century, a theory transformation brought about by semiotics has inserted profound impact on almost all the disciplines of humanities, including anthropology, literary theory and art history. Starting with the aim at theorizing these studies, the movement has evolved into a capitalized Theory during its development that shifts its focuses to the ethical and political functions of literature and art and sacrifices the aesthetic values of literary texts. When Meyer Schapiro introduced semiotic methods into his art history studies, he could avoid the hazard. His introduction of semiotics into art history study, by bypassing the essentialist or metaphysical …

Recent studies suggest that gut microbiomes of urban-industrialized societies are different from those of traditional peoples. Here we examine the relationship between lifeways and gut microbiota through taxonomic and functional potential characterization of faecal samples from hunter-gatherer and traditional agriculturalist communities in Peru and an urban-industrialized community from the US. We find that in addition to taxonomic and metabolic differences between urban and traditional lifestyles, hunter-gatherers form a distinct sub-group among traditional peoples. As observed in previous studies, we find that Treponema are characteristic of traditional gut microbiomes. Moreover, through genome reconstruction (2.2–2.5 MB, coverage depth × 26–513) and functional …

Food Insecurity And Hunger Experiences And Their Impact On Food Pantry Clients In The Tampa Bay, Nora Brickhouse Arriola Mar 2015

Food Insecurity And Hunger Experiences And Their Impact On Food Pantry Clients In The Tampa Bay, Nora Brickhouse Arriola

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since 1999, there has been a significant increase in the number of food insecure individuals in the United States. The Great Recession (2007-2009) and slow economic recovery has led to additional increases in rates of food insecurity and the usage of emergency food assistance programs. Thirty qualitative interviews with individuals seeking emergency food assistance at a Tampa Bay food pantry were conducted. Interviews focused on collecting the life experiences of participants, the barriers they face in having food security, their strategies to cope with limited food budgets, and how food insecurity impacts their household's overall health and wellbeing. Recommendations for …

Spatial Analysis Of Archaeological Assemblages From The Late Ceramic Age (Ad 400-1400) Site Of Grand Bay, Carriacou, West Indies, Kara I. Casto

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study utilizes a geographic information system (GIS) to examine the spatial relationships between the assemblages of major artifact and ecofact categories at the Late Ceramic Age (AD 400-1400) site of Grand Bay, Carriacou. In addition, the study examines how these assemblages formed through various cultural and natural formation processes and have been affected by recent episodes of coastal erosion. Previous archaeological research for this region of the Caribbean is lacking, but with the determined efforts of the Carriacou Archaeological Field Project, Grand Bay's role has been brought to the forefront of current investigations answering questions about pre-Columbian migration …

Creating A Professional Pathway For The Women Who Care For Our Children: An Anthropological Study Of An Early Childhood Workforce Development Policy, Melissa Kay Van Dyke Mar 2015

Creating A Professional Pathway For The Women Who Care For Our Children: An Anthropological Study Of An Early Childhood Workforce Development Policy, Melissa Kay Van Dyke

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the early childhood workforce has been described as undereducated, poor, and disproportionately comprised of women of color. The EDUCATE workforce development policy was designed to advance the professional development of under-paid and under-valued child care workers. This study focuses on the history, intent, and impact of this policy at the intersection between the grantees, the State, the various organizational contexts, and the broader structural forces. More broadly, complex issues and challenges related to the early childhood workforce are surfaced. Finally, through a critical analysis of the findings, the hidden and dominating forces that maintain the current level of inequity …

The Sociological Perspective Revisited, Rodger A. Bates Mar 2015

The Sociological Perspective Revisited, Rodger A. Bates

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

The Sociological Perspective Revisited

Dr. Rodger Bates

In the 1950s, sociology was committed to the development of a set of basic concepts for advancing the discipline. Heavily influenced by structure-functionalism, sociology focused on general and mid-range theories in seeking to understand and explain society. By the 1960s this perspective was challenged by the emergence of modern conflict theory with its emphases on race, class and gender and the consequences of inequality. However, with the success of the social movements of the latter half of the century, sociology embraced deconstructionism. As a consequence of this trend, sociology increasingly embraced empathy and …
