Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This paper argues that evangelization takes place within the context of globalization, the phenomenon that integrates the economic, cultural, social, political and religious dimensions of human existence towards improved standard of living for humanity. While acknowledging the potential dangers of globalization, especially the expanding income disparity, marginalization, secularization, consumerism, the tendency towards monoculturalism and imperialism, the author advocates daily personal encounter with the person of Jesus as the springboard of Christian spirituality. This paper concentrates on the impact of globalization on African Catholicism’s appropriation of Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium for a new evangelization and recommends important changes in …
Constructed Constraint And The Constitutional Text, Curtis A. Bradley, Neil S. Siegel
Constructed Constraint And The Constitutional Text, Curtis A. Bradley, Neil S. Siegel
Faculty Scholarship
In recent years, constitutional theorists have attended to the unwritten aspects of American constitutionalism and, relatedly, to the ways in which the constitutional text can be “constructed” upon by various materials. This Article takes a different approach. Instead of considering how various materials can supplement, implement, or interact with the constitutional text, the Article focuses on how the text itself is often partially constructed in American constitutional practice. Although interpreters typically regard clear text as controlling, this Article contends that whether the text is perceived to be clear is often affected by various “modalities” of constitutional interpretation that are normally …
Race, Culture And Agency: Examining The Ideologies And Practices Of Us Teachers Of Black Male Students, Quaylan Allen
Race, Culture And Agency: Examining The Ideologies And Practices Of Us Teachers Of Black Male Students, Quaylan Allen
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This study examines teachers of Black male students in a United States secondary school setting. Qualitative methods were used to document teachers' ideologies of and practices with their Black male students. In general, teachers drew upon competing structural and cultural explanations of Black male social and academic outcomes, while also engaging in practices that contested school barriers for Black males. Teacher beliefs about and practices with their Black male students were inconsistent in many ways, yet their agency on behalf of Black males might be understood as essential to Black male educational progress.

Gülen, Focolare, And Rissho Kosei-Kai Movements: Commonalities For Religious And Social Renewal, Roberto Catalano
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
This article compares the characteristics of three movements of religious renewal that were born in the second half of the twentieth century and that have been active in interreligious dialogue: the Buddhist movement Risshō Kōsei-kai, which originated in Japan; the Catholic Focolare Movement, which started in Italy; and the Gülen Movement, which was born in Turkey. These religious renewal phenomena hold in common some elements that offer fertile ground for the development of interreligious dialogue: They are open to other religious traditions and to collaborating with persons of other faiths as they address today’s problems. They are lay movements founded …
Chiara Lubich And The Transformation Of Relationships: A Response To “Chiara Lubich And Gender Sociology”, Alejandra Marinovic
Chiara Lubich And The Transformation Of Relationships: A Response To “Chiara Lubich And Gender Sociology”, Alejandra Marinovic
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
Di Nicola’s essay offers an interesting view of Chiara Lubich’s charism of unity from the perspective of one of society’s main problems: the wound in the relationships between men and women. The violation of the human rights of women, women’s lack of access to political and economic power, and gender discrimination are examples of this wound. The author sheds light on the significance of Lubich’s contribution to this central aspect.
Chiara Lubich And Gender Sociology, Giulia Paola Di Nicola
Chiara Lubich And Gender Sociology, Giulia Paola Di Nicola
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
This article sets out those points that define the societal influence of Chiara Lubich on relationships between men and women from the perspectives of sociology and the women’s movements. Di Nicola highlights four structural aspects, including Chiara’s status as a young woman founder, diarchy, sisterhood, and the rule of a woman president. The author also discusses six cultural aspects, including love at the center, the dignity of lay vocations, the conversion of masculinity, the conversion of femininity, going against the current, and wise ignorance. The author presents issues of concern and emphasizes that we are still far from solving the …

Putting Arens To The Test, Tyler A. Balli, Justin Cannon, Blake Brailsford, Aubrey Kartchner, Hallie Johnson
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
For our History 202 class, Professor Larsen assigned us to read excerpts from William E. Arens' book called The Man-Eating Myth. The premise of Arens' book is that all of the instances of one group accusing the other of cannibalism are fabricated. If one digs deeply enough, they will not find reliable first hand accounts of cannibalism. Professor Larsen encouraged us to pick a society that was accused of cannibalism and to investigate whether or not the accusations were valid or not. After researching our group came to the conclusion that Arens was wrong in the case of the Maori. …

Interpreting Bronze Age Exchange In Sicily Through Trace Element Characterization Of Ceramics Utilizing Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (Pxrf), Erin Marie Mckendry
Interpreting Bronze Age Exchange In Sicily Through Trace Element Characterization Of Ceramics Utilizing Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (Pxrf), Erin Marie Mckendry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Throughout history and prehistory, Sicily has played a key role for maritime trade in the Mediterranean. Interactions with Sicily are attested to in research for various societies throughout the Mediterranean as early as the Neolithic. However, much of this research paints Sicilian societies as passive, focusing primarily on external groups of people in a given period and their influence on the island. By ignoring the importance of the indigenous population, current research lacks a balanced approach to investigations and subsequent conclusions. This is most evident in literature pertaining to Mycenaean interactions with Sicily during the Bronze Age. Ceramic evidence and …
Trespass And Deception, Laurent Sacharoff
Trespass And Deception, Laurent Sacharoff
BYU Law Review
Police routinely use deception to get into people’s homes without warrant or probable cause. They may pose as UPS delivery persons or homebuyers, or they may say they are looking for a kidnapping victim or a pedophile, when really they are looking for drugs or guns. Recent years have brought hundreds of reported decisions concerning such police ruses.
When the police lie about their identity or their purpose to enter a home, as when they pose as a homebuyer, the courts surprisingly, but routinely, approve these deceptions under the Fourth Amendment. Such intrusions, the courts reason, do not violate a …
Catholic Labor Education And The Association Of Catholic Trade Unionists. Instructing Workers To Christianize The Workplace, Paul Lubienecki Ph.D.
Catholic Labor Education And The Association Of Catholic Trade Unionists. Instructing Workers To Christianize The Workplace, Paul Lubienecki Ph.D.
Journal of Catholic Education
This article analyzes the effect of the American Catholic Church, through its program of specialized labor education, on the growth and development of organized labor in the twentieth century. With the proclamation of Pope Pius XI’s encyclical Quadragesimo Anno, he requested that the Church complete the work began by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 with his landmark social encyclical Rerum Novarum.
However, the American interpretation and utilization of the social encyclicals varied from their intended European meaning. The cumulative effect of these two encyclicals was support for the workers’ rights to organize and create Christian labor associations. From …
