An Exploration Of Gender Roles And The Traditional Dual Gendered Parenting Model Within Co-Fathered Families, Zoe Dearborn Geyman Apr 2015

An Exploration Of Gender Roles And The Traditional Dual Gendered Parenting Model Within Co-Fathered Families, Zoe Dearborn Geyman

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

In this paper I develop a working theory of gender as a constantly performed state of social mimicry that evolves in response to one’s lived experience. Through analysis of transcript selections from the daily lives of two co-fathered families and relevant literature, I explore the gendered realities of gay parents, and introduce work, in this case referring to professional labor and its associated identities, as key to the gendering process. In the paper I also address the malleability of family units, and explore the ways in which gay fathers negotiate pressures to conform to the traditionally gendered family model. Ultimately, …

Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito Apr 2015

Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito

Research Papers

With the ever-rising capabilities of motion capture systems; this project explored markerless facial motion capture programs using the Kinect Sensor for Xbox. Many systems today still use markers and end up retargeting after a motion capture recording. This project used a simpler process of setting up and being able to display the effects live. An off-the-shelf system was built using a computer, a Kinect Sensor, a plug-in from Brekel, and Autodesk software. The first goal was to create a process that was able to capture and project live facial motion for fewer than $500 USD. Anything over $500 USD was …

Color-Coded Media: Portrayals Of Race In Newspaper Coverage Of National Hockey League Athletes, Camille E. Anderson

Student Research Symposium

Previous research reveals differences in the language used to describe minority and non-minority football, basketball, and baseball athletes. The purpose of this study is to address the dearth of research regarding media portrayals of minority and non-minority athletes in the National Hockey League (NHL). This study utilized both qualitative and quantitative analyses to determine whether media coverage of professional hockey players is different based on race. Comments (n=1,487) from 18 of the highest circulation newspaper publications in the United States and Canada reporting on regular and post-season play for the 2013-2014 NHL season were coded using a modified version of the Biased Coverage …

Stewards Or Owners? The Influence Of Mormonism On Public Perspectives About Renewable Energy, Climate Change, And The Environment, Shawn Olson, Richard Krannich, Peter Robertson Apr 2015

Stewards Or Owners? The Influence Of Mormonism On Public Perspectives About Renewable Energy, Climate Change, And The Environment, Shawn Olson, Richard Krannich, Peter Robertson

Student Research Symposium

This research investigates the influence of different religious traditions, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints (LDS), on public support for renewable energy development and other environmental issues. We situate our study within the literature on religion and environment, and provide a contribution to the relatively limited amount of research that has been done examining the association between Mormonism and environmental concern. While some studies have found that members of the Mormon Church are significantly less likely to support environmental policy and behaviors, others have found that Mormons display higher levels of environmental concern than general U.S. population. …

#Genderroles: Modeling Gender Among Lds Students, Erica Hawvermale, Essa Temple, Mckayla Montierth Apr 2015

#Genderroles: Modeling Gender Among Lds Students, Erica Hawvermale, Essa Temple, Mckayla Montierth

Student Research Symposium

Cultural consensus has emerged as an important way of teaching mixed ethnographic methods to future generations of anthropologists. A major strength of cultural consensus as a pedagogical tool is its intuitive logic and straight forward procedure. This paper demonstrates the use of this method as an entry point into anthropological fieldwork about religious gender roles. The collaborative efforts of Utah State University student-researchers show how junior researchers can use this approach to document the consensus and contestation of ideal gender roles of Mormon college students. Research methods included both semi-structured "free-list" interviews and pile-sorts to determine this cultural consensus model …

Color Coded Media: Portrayals Of Race In Newspaper Coverage National Hockey League Athletes, Camille E. Anderson

Student Research Symposium

Media representation of athletes may inform broader racial stereotypes. Examining the differences in journalists’ when describing both minority and non‐minority athletes within the NHL illustrates the ways in which this language contributes to readers’ constructions of race. The difference in the racial composition of the NHL presents a unique opportunity to examine how this difference affects the way in which minority athletes are portrayed in the mass media. Minority players are truly the minority in the NHL, whereas other professional sporting leagues could be considered minority-majority sports.

Experiences, Perceived Challenges, And Support Systems Of Early College High School Students, Karen P. Sáenz, Julie P. Combs Apr 2015

Experiences, Perceived Challenges, And Support Systems Of Early College High School Students, Karen P. Sáenz, Julie P. Combs

Administrative Issues Journal

In this qualitative study, the prior experiences, perceived challenges, and support systems of 17 Grade 12 Hispanic students at an early college high school were explored using the framework of social capital theory. Utilizing Moustakas’s phenomenological design, data were collected using focus group and individuals interviews. Several themes emerged and were related to the conceptual framework of social capital, such as the school environment, support from family and teachers, and the students’ identify and values. Understanding the experiences of the Grade 12 students can provide valuable information for high school and college administrators in an ECHS setting.

Environmental Education In Pre-K Child Care Settings, Kathryn Allison Galloway-Thoele

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed is, how does environmental education and nature play in child care settings benefit children? A key influence was the author’s interest in providing stimulating environmental education for her young daughter and evaluating the environmental programs of local child care providers and the perceived benefits for children. Six child care centers of differing teaching philosophies were the focus of the study with each completing a 28 question survey about the environmental activities and sustainability programs in place at their facilities and the early childhood development traits observed in the children. Results from the study showed that child …

We planned this conference in anticipation of the end of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), and the start of the next phase for those involved in ESD here and internationally. At Plymouth University, 2015 marks ten year anniversary since cross-‐institutional work on sustainability and sustainability education was spearheaded by the founding of the Centre for Sustainable Futures (CSF). Coincidentally, 2015 also marks a ten years since the influential HEFCE policy document ‘Sustainable Development in Higher Education’ was released. Holding the conference in January – named after the Roman god of doorways, of endings and beginnings – …

Sailors In British Broadside Ballads, 1800-1850, Georgina Prineppi Apr 2015

Sailors In British Broadside Ballads, 1800-1850, Georgina Prineppi

Open Access Theses

The broadside ballad was an important form of popular street music that flourished from the 16th to the 19th centuries in the British Isles, Continental Europe and North America. During the Napoleonic Wars, Britain’s fighting sailor—commonly known as “Jack Tar”—became a prominent subject of the country’s broadside ballad tradition, thanks to songwriters like Charles Dibdin, who forged a new and compelling image for the sailor, depicting him as Britain’s brave, patriotic, and loyal defender. In the early years of the nineteenth century, hundreds of broadside ballads about the noble Jack Tar were written and circulated in Britain, extolling his virtues …

Context-Specific Close-Range “Hoo” Calls In Wild Gibbons (Hylobates Lar), Esther Clarke, Ulrich H. Reichard, Klaus Zuberbühler Apr 2015

Context-Specific Close-Range “Hoo” Calls In Wild Gibbons (Hylobates Lar), Esther Clarke, Ulrich H. Reichard, Klaus Zuberbühler

Publications

Background

Close range calls are produced by many animals during intra-specific interactions, such as during home range defence, playing, begging for food, and directing others. In this study, we investigated the most common close range vocalisation of lar gibbons (Hylobates lar), the ‘hoo’ call. Gibbons and siamangs (family Hylobatidae) are known for their conspicuous and elaborate songs, while quieter, close range vocalisations have received almost no empirical attention, perhaps due to the difficult observation conditions in their natural forest habitats.

Results

We found that ‘hoo’ calls were emitted by both sexes in a variety of contexts, including feeding, …

"It Takes Time To Shift Historical Paradigms": Changes In Structure, Governance, Perception, And Practice During A Decade Of Child Welfare Policy Reform In Florida, Amy Catherine Vargo Apr 2015

"It Takes Time To Shift Historical Paradigms": Changes In Structure, Governance, Perception, And Practice During A Decade Of Child Welfare Policy Reform In Florida, Amy Catherine Vargo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explored changes in structure, governance, perception and practice within Florida's child welfare system over a ten-year period (2001-2011) inclusive of two concurrent, statewide reform efforts: the privatization of child welfare services and implementation of a Title IV-E Waiver Demonstration. Using an anthropological perspective and holistic approach, the child welfare system is presented as a type of meta-organizational culture inclusive of subsystems and subcultures which are all embedded in historical and socioeconomic context that involves alternations between child safety and family preservation approaches to care.

Guided by a grounded theory approach to qualitative data analysis, content analysis of child …

The Heritage Of The Mississippi County Nurse-Midwife Service, Charles Zenon Baclawski Apr 2015

The Heritage Of The Mississippi County Nurse-Midwife Service, Charles Zenon Baclawski

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi County Nurse Midwife Program began during a conversation between two people in 1974. The agency was originally organized to improve access to medical care for women in Blytheville, Arkansas. However, it quickly evolved into a tool of changing deep seated attitudes of mistrust of male dominated orthodox medicine among poor and minority women. The effectiveness of the agency is founded in the acceptance of nurse-midwifery into the family of orthodox medical practice. This was a significant change from the decades-long narrative developed by orthodox medicine in Arkansas. The contributions of the nurse-midwife service are also found in the …
