Milton's Satan As The Evolving Poet, David Thomas Johnson Dec 2015

Milton's Satan As The Evolving Poet, David Thomas Johnson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Beyond established associations between Milton’s Satan and the poet himself, I argue that Milton’s Satan, specifically in Book Nine of Paradise Lost, is a direct reflection of Milton, his career as a poet, and his precarious position in attempting to create a conclusion to his epic that does justice to the extraordinary narration of pre-fall history in Books I through IX. I will use a psychoanalytic approach in discussing what I believe to be Milton’s overwhelming desire to solidify his own position in the English literary canon, and the anxiety he seems to experience in a state of creative limbo. …

A World Consuming Itself: Posthuman Cannibals After The End Of The World, Joseph Ronald Kampff Dec 2015

A World Consuming Itself: Posthuman Cannibals After The End Of The World, Joseph Ronald Kampff

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis investigates the growing trend in late 20th- and early 21st-century post-apocalyptic fiction to feature cannibalism. I argue that these narratives reimagine the cannibal to reflect today’s global worldview. By comparing contemporary cannibal narratives such as David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas and the Wachowskis’ film series The Matrix to H. G. Wells’s classic novel The Time Machine, I show that today’s cannibal narratives radically destabilize the binary oppositions of (usually Western) civilized humanity and its savage, cannibal-animal others that traditional cannibal narratives tend to underwrite. The traditional cannibal figure has been an essential element in not only the construction of …

Genetic And Structural Analyses Of Poliovirus Protein 2catpase, Emmanuel Noble Asare Dec 2015

Genetic And Structural Analyses Of Poliovirus Protein 2catpase, Emmanuel Noble Asare

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The specificity of encapsidation of members of the genus Enterovirus of the Picornaviridae family depends on an interaction between capsid proteins and nonstructural protein 2CATPase. In particular, in the context of a chimeric virus, the N252 residue of poliovirus (PV) 2CATPase interacts with VP3 E180 of coxsackievirus A20. PV 2CATPase has important roles both in RNA replication and encapsidation, but in the context of just the poliovirus polyprotein, N252 does not function in assembly. The aim of my study was to search for additional residues near N252 in 2CATPase that are required for PV encapsidation. I predicted a three-dimensional protein …

Total Dietary Fiber Content Of Selected Traditional Beverages In Egypt: A Brief Profile, Basil H. Aboul-Enein

Health & Wellness Department Faculty Publications and Research

Escalating obesity rates have become a major public health concern in North Africa and the Middle East. Culturally-congruent dietary health education and strategies continue to be warranted to address this increasing public health crisis. Knowledge and familiarity with traditional foods and their nutritive value would assist public health practitioners in becoming culturally competent when educating on healthy eating patterns. The aim of this study is to provide a brief dietary profile of the total dietary fiber (TDF) contents of selected traditional beverages in Egypt. Five cookbooks for Egyptian food recipes were reviewed for traditional beverages. Beverage recipes (n = …

Student Service Members/Veterans Programs In Erie County Colleges And Universities: Analyzing Programs For Removing Barriers And Facilitating Identity Transitioning, William E. Langer Dec 2015

Student Service Members/Veterans Programs In Erie County Colleges And Universities: Analyzing Programs For Removing Barriers And Facilitating Identity Transitioning, William E. Langer

Public Administration Master’s Projects

Student Service Members/Veterans (SSM/Vs) served their nation in times of peace and in war and in doing so, are eligible for various educational benefits. To assist the SSM/V in adapting to their new role as a student and civilian, most postsecondary educational institutions offer services specifically tailored to the SSM/V population in order to support and assist them in completing their academic program. These services could include navigating benefit programs, financial aid, orientation programs and disability services as needed. In this transformative mixed methods study, a content analysis of the public websites of the schools was first conducted to determine …

Le Cinéma Face À L’Oblitération Génocidaire. Silences Éloquents Et Hors-Champ Intérieur Chez Philippe Van Leeuw Et Kivu Ruhorahoza, Alexandre Dauge-Roth, Ayse Irem Ikizler Dec 2015

Le Cinéma Face À L’Oblitération Génocidaire. Silences Éloquents Et Hors-Champ Intérieur Chez Philippe Van Leeuw Et Kivu Ruhorahoza, Alexandre Dauge-Roth, Ayse Irem Ikizler

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Philippe Van Leeuw and Kivu Ruhorahoza’s cinema proposes an esthetic and ethical gaze that distances itself from the historic realism that defines the majority of the films on the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. By conferring an unprecedented eloquence to different types of silence and by maintaining viewers in a concerted state of ignorance, both filmmakers question societies’ will to know within the legacy of genocide and their willingness to culturally acknowledge the traumatic resonance of its aftermath.

The Image Machine, Jeremy Min Burns Dec 2015

The Image Machine, Jeremy Min Burns

Architecture Senior Theses

Architecture has always been an image machine. From the Lascaux cave paintings to the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris to the multimedia installations of the Eameses to the early projects of Diller Scofidio, images and architecture have cohabited persistently and productively for centuries. However, since the dawn of the digital age, the ontological status of images has changed; and in turn so has the relationship between images and architecture. Rather than being anchored to a specific material support, images exist as manipulable data. While some have viewed the digital turns as the transcendence of information beyond the human subject, an era of …

From Accession To Exemption: A Brief History Of The Development Of Alaska Property Exemption Laws, Eric H. Miller Dec 2015

From Accession To Exemption: A Brief History Of The Development Of Alaska Property Exemption Laws, Eric H. Miller

Alaska Law Review

This Article examines the historical development of Alaska's debtor protections from their beginnings in the period of initial federal administration to the present. The current Alaska statutes protecting certain property of debtors from their creditors descended from policies first enacted by Congress. Although federal authority began in 1867 with the area's acquisition from Russia, Congress did not provide for governmental administration in Alaska until 1884, which act also provided Alaska its first debtor protection statutes. Extension of the federal Homestead Act to Alaska in 1898 brought the first protections for settlers' homesteads from their creditors. By 1912 and the creation …

We Can’T Expect ‘The Market’ To Provide A Housing Policy, Lorcan Sirr Dec 2015

We Can’T Expect ‘The Market’ To Provide A Housing Policy, Lorcan Sirr

Media

As the government grapples with establishing a worthwhile housing policy, it would do well to remember that affordability is key. As companies increasingly choose to locate in or near cities, and people followjobs, most of Ireland’s housing needs will be in the greater Dublin area. In 2015, about half the population lives on just 20% of Ireland’s surface area, but by 2030 nearly half the nation will be living on just 10% of the land. Figures vary but the Dublin area will need 8,000-10,000 housing units per year.

Influence Of Rock-Pool Characteristics On The Distribution And Abundance Of Inter-Tidal Fishes, Gemma E. White, Grant C. Hose, Culum Brown Dec 2015

Influence Of Rock-Pool Characteristics On The Distribution And Abundance Of Inter-Tidal Fishes, Gemma E. White, Grant C. Hose, Culum Brown

Ecology Collection

Rock pools can be found in inter-tidal marine environments worldwide; however, there have been few studies exploring what drives their, fish species composition, especially in Australia. The rock-pool environment is highly dynamic and offers a unique natural laboratory to study the habitat choices, physiological limitations and adaptations of inter-tidal fish species. In this study rock pools of the Sydney region were sampled to determine how the physical (volume, depth, rock cover and vertical position) and biological (algal cover and predator presence) parameters of pools influence fish distribution and abundance. A total of 27 fish species representing 14 families was observed …

Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity In A Free-Ranging Mammal: Effects Of Dominance Rank And Personality, Elodie F. Briefer, James A. Oxley, Alan G. Mcelligott Dec 2015

Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity In A Free-Ranging Mammal: Effects Of Dominance Rank And Personality, Elodie F. Briefer, James A. Oxley, Alan G. Mcelligott

Ethology Collection

Modulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity allows animals to effectively respond to internal and external stimuli in everyday challenges via changes in, for example, heart and respiration rate. Various factors, ranging from social such as dominance rank to internal such as personality or affective states can impact animal physiology. Our knowledge of the combinatory effects of social and internal factors on ANS basal activity and reactivity, and of the importance that each factor has in determining physiological parameters, is limited, particularly in nonhuman, free-ranging animals. In this study, we tested the effects of dominance rank and personality (assessed …

Predicting Human Drug Toxicity And Safety Via Animal Tests: Can Any One Species Predict Drug Toxicity In Any Other, And Do Monkeys Help?, Jarrod Bailey, Michelle Thew, Michael Balls

Laboratory Experiments Collection

Animals are still widely used in drug development and safety tests, despite evidence for their lack of predictive value. In this regard, we recently showed, by producing Likelihood Ratios (LRs) for an extensive data set of over 3,000 drugs with both animal and human data, that the absence of toxicity in animals provides little or virtually no evidential weight that adverse drug reactions will also be absent in humans. While our analyses suggest that the presence of toxicity in one species may sometimes add evidential weight for risk of toxicity in another, the LRs are extremely inconsistent, varying substantially for …

Energy Performance And Indoor Environmental Control Of Animal Houses: A Modelling Tool, Enrico Fabrizio, Andrea Ghiggini Dec 2015

Energy Performance And Indoor Environmental Control Of Animal Houses: A Modelling Tool, Enrico Fabrizio, Andrea Ghiggini

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

The energy-related products Directive (ErP) 2009/125/EC has set a new generation of equipment that are more energy efficient and reliable. In the case of climate control for livestock housing, a key role can be played by EC motors direct drive variable flow fans that can be used instead of traditional AC fans in applications like broiler or dairy houses. The energy consumptions of such fans strictly depend on the specific application and on the outdoor weather conditions, and there is therefore the need to forecast their energy performance by means of computational tools. In this work, we present a tool …

Gopher Intrusion In Cropping Systems, Kenneth Romero, Paul Cardinalli

Agricultural Education and Communication

The purpose of this project was to determine if no till vs. till on gopher populations was more beneficial. Which is more efficient at controlling gophers and explain the damage they can cause and the diseases they can potentially vector. What are the different options of pest managements that have to be used when dealing with a gopher infestation in a tilled field vs. a no-tilled field.

Can Films Speak The Truth? Mathieu Kassovitz’S La Haine (1995) And Philippe Faucon’S La Désintégration (2011), Annie Jouan-Westlund Ph.D. Dec 2015

Can Films Speak The Truth? Mathieu Kassovitz’S La Haine (1995) And Philippe Faucon’S La Désintégration (2011), Annie Jouan-Westlund Ph.D.

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

La Haine, (Dir. Mathieu Kassovitz, 1995) and La Désintégration (Dir. Philippe Faucon, 2011), set in France’s urban periphery, depict the struggle of second and third-generation immigrants growing up in the housing projects and their desire to live like ‘other’ French young people. The analysis offers a comparative study of the films’ reception with a community of viewers made of American students in a Contemporary French Culture course. Following the three paradigms of exclusion (social, racial, and cultural); gender representation; and aestheticism and realism, this study demonstrates that, within certain limits, these cinematic propositions, of similar prophetic nature but different …

Print Is Dead: The Promise And Peril Of Online Media For Subcultural Resistance, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl Dec 2015

Print Is Dead: The Promise And Peril Of Online Media For Subcultural Resistance, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl

Sociology Faculty Publications

Researchers have maintained a consistent interest in subcultural resistance: marginalized groups challenging their subordinate positions in society through words or deeds. Resisting groups increasingly use online media for resistance, but we know little about the web’s consequences for subcultural challengers. In this article, I explore the promise and peril of digital media for resistance relative to traditional, printed media, from an ethnographic exploration of punk subculture. Rather than finding support for either supporters or critics of online resistance, I find evidence for an alternative, dialectical perspective in which the Internet simultaneously invigorates and problematizes punk resistance. It provides the oppositional …

The Bacterial Colonization Of Commonly Used Dental Implant Occluding Materials., Brandon G. Katz Dec 2015

The Bacterial Colonization Of Commonly Used Dental Implant Occluding Materials., Brandon G. Katz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Title: The Bacterial Colonization of Commonly Used Dental Implant Occluding Materials.  Purpose: To determine the bacterial communities inhabiting commonly used materials intended to block/occlude the screw access channel of dental implant crowns/restorations. To aid in the prevention of peri-implantitis, a material that harbors less pathogenic red and orange complex microbes would be potentially beneficial when microleakage is occurring. A superior material for the purpose of the occlusion of screw access channels in implant-supported prostheses is a material that may provide a surface to which bacteria may not colonize. The choice of an occluding material that is less favorable for bacterial …

Body And Horizon: Kant, Husserl, And The Nonconceptual Content Of Experience, Emiliano F. Diaz Dec 2015

Body And Horizon: Kant, Husserl, And The Nonconceptual Content Of Experience, Emiliano F. Diaz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The debate that took place between Herbert Dreyfus and John McDowell a few years back concerning the nonconceptual content of experience was in many ways disappointing. The question addressed in the debate between Dreyfus and McDowell, in its most basic form, is why we should think embodied cognition is a more compelling account of our motor engagement with the world than one that casts it in terms of concepts. A question that is not addressed is why we should find the justificatory grounds provided by either thinker more or less compelling than the other. To answer this question, I reframe …

Biophysical Properties Of Cx40 Mutants As They Relate With Atrial Fibrillation, Ana B Santa Cruz Garcia

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Abstract of the Dissertation Biophysical properties of Cx40 mutants as they relate to Atrial Fibrillation by Ana Santa Cruz Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology and Biophysics Stony Brook University 2015 Gap junctions (GJs) are integral membrane proteins and are the only known cellular structures that allow a direct cell-to-cell transfer of signaling molecules by forming densely packed arrays of hydrophilic channels that bridge the opposing membranes of neighboring cells. A gap junction channels is formed with two hexameric connexons. Each connexon is comprised of six connexin subunits. Cell-to-cell action potential propagation in the heart is mediated through gap junction channels …

Denitrifying Bioreactors: A Solution To Groundwater Nitrate Pollution At The Forge River?, Christine Jean Gurdon Dec 2015

Denitrifying Bioreactors: A Solution To Groundwater Nitrate Pollution At The Forge River?, Christine Jean Gurdon

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Denitrifying bioreactors are an approach to remediate groundwater contaminated with nitrate. Their popularity as a remediation system has increased due to their unnecessary maintenance, low cost, and longevity. While field trials on their performance have been conducted, few have been completed in a marine coastal environment. In this study, a denitrification wall was designed to be installed and monitored along the shore of a coastal environment, namely, the Forge River, New York. Prior to the design phase, a groundwater plume of elevated nitrate-nitrite concentrations needed to be identified. Groundwater nitrate-nitrite concentrations ranged from 0.01-17.68 mg/L along Riviera Drive, a road …

Net N2 Fluxes In Muddy Sediments Of Great Peconic Bay: Rates, Pathways & Controls, Stuart Waugh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Abstract of the Dissertation NET N2 FLUXES IN MUDDY SEDIMENTS OF GREAT PECONIC BAY: RATES, PATHWAYS & CONTROLS by Stuart Waugh Doctor of Philosophy in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Stony Brook University 2015 Depending on its form, nitrogen (N) can exert a dominant control on marine productivity and ecosystem structure. Multiple geochemical processes are involved in redox transformations of nitrogen (N) in marine sediments. In coastal benthic environments, a number of abiotic and biological environmental factors control the extent to which these processes are relevant and therefore the outcomes of sedimentary N transformations. This dissertation seeks to quantify rates of …

Functional Study Of Classical Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases In Mammary Epithelial Cells, Mathangi Ramesh Dec 2015

Functional Study Of Classical Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases In Mammary Epithelial Cells, Mathangi Ramesh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Reversible protein tyrosine phosphorylation is critical for the dynamic regulation of protein function and is maintained by the synchronized and complementary activity of Protein Tyrosine Kinases (PTKs) and Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases (PTPs). Although considerable progress has been made in understanding the function of PTKs, the study of PTPs has lagged behind. Some PTPs have been implicated as products of oncogenes or tumor suppressors. Particularly in breast cancers driven by the oncogenic receptor tyrosine kinase ERBB2, there is evidence for PTPs playing diverse regulatory roles, suggesting that systematic analysis of PTP function could yield important insights into this field which could, …
