Whole Genome Capture Of Vector-Borne Pathogens From Mixed Dna Samples: A Case Study Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Giovanna Carpi, Katharine S. Walter, Stephen J. Bent, Anne Gatewood Hoen, Maria Diuk-Wasser, Adalgisa Caccone Jun 2015

Whole Genome Capture Of Vector-Borne Pathogens From Mixed Dna Samples: A Case Study Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Giovanna Carpi, Katharine S. Walter, Stephen J. Bent, Anne Gatewood Hoen, Maria Diuk-Wasser, Adalgisa Caccone

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Rapid and accurate retrieval of whole genome sequences of human pathogens from disease vectors or animal reservoirs will enable fine-resolution studies of pathogen epidemiological and evolutionary dynamics. However, next generation sequencing technologies have not yet been fully harnessed for the study of vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens, due to the difficulty of obtaining high-quality pathogen sequence data directly from field specimens with a high ratio of host to pathogen DNA.

Results:

We addressed this challenge by using custom probes for multiplexed hybrid capture to enrich for and sequence 30 Borrelia burgdorferi genomes from field samples of its arthropod vector. Hybrid …

Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich Jun 2015

Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich

Pace Law Review

This article contributes to the outline of the origin of property rights set forth by Professor Krier, by more fully analyzing the role of evolutionary biology in the development of property rights. This article focuses on the pre-political formation of property ownership and the initial formation of concepts of property and ownership. Expanding on Krier’s analysis, this article considers the implications of this evolutionary foundation on our modern property regime, particularly given the growing chasm between the wealthy on one side and the poor and middle-class on the other.

Part II discusses the growing disparity of wealth in America and …

Effects Of Early-Adolescent, Mid-Adolescent, Or Adult Stress On Morphine Conditioned Place Preference, Chloe Shields Jun 2015

Effects Of Early-Adolescent, Mid-Adolescent, Or Adult Stress On Morphine Conditioned Place Preference, Chloe Shields

Senior Theses

In light of previous work demonstrating that stress can increase subjective drug reward in adult rats, the present study investigated the influence of stress on morphine conditioned place preference (CPP) in early-adolescent, mid-adolescent, and adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Subjects in each age group were assigned to either a no stress condition or a stress condition in which they were exposed to an unpredictable eight-day schedule of elevated platform and synthetic fox odor stressors. Place conditioning then evaluated subjective morphine reward in all animals. Using a biased procedure, subjects were assigned to receive morphine on the initially non-preferred side of the …

Of Goats And Men, Richard Bertram Peterson Jun 2015

Of Goats And Men, Richard Bertram Peterson

Booth

In the small, coastal town of Monterey, California, a tidy residential community called Deer Flats perches on one of the nearby hills. From up there, on a clear day, of which there are many, one may, if one chooses, watch the bay and the boats that sail upon its waters, and catch the failing rays of sunlight at dusk. The houses are well kept, the people industrious, and for the most part civil, if not particularly cordial. They enjoy walking their dogs and tending their front yards. Lately, however, because of the drought, the lawns have browned and withered.

Tumor Suppressor Role Of Abl Kinase In Crki-Transformed Fibroblasts And Its Implication In Human Cancer Cells, Khong Ying Ng Jun 2015

Tumor Suppressor Role Of Abl Kinase In Crki-Transformed Fibroblasts And Its Implication In Human Cancer Cells, Khong Ying Ng

Doctoral Dissertations

Since the discovery of the first oncogenic Crk adaptor protein, v-Crk in 1988, various studies have been conducted to understand the signaling mechanism of Crk proteins. In our previous knockdown study to investigate the importance of several CrkI SH3-binding effectors in the tumorigenesis of CrkI, we were surprised to learn that Abl kinase negatively regulates CrkI transformation in NIH3T3 cells. Because constitutively active Abl kinase, in the form of BCR-ABL, is famously known to cause chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in humans, we initially expected a similar tumor promoting role for Abl in CrkI transformation. However, downregulated Abl kinase (through shRNA …

Effects Of Pringle Maneuver And Partial Hepatectomy On The Pharmacokinetics And Blood–Brain Barrier Permeability Of Sodium Fluorescein In Rats, Mohammad K. Miah, Imam H. Shaik, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar Jun 2015

Effects Of Pringle Maneuver And Partial Hepatectomy On The Pharmacokinetics And Blood–Brain Barrier Permeability Of Sodium Fluorescein In Rats, Mohammad K. Miah, Imam H. Shaik, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Liver diseases are known to affect the function of remote organs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Pringle maneuver, which results in hepatic ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury, and partial hepatectomy (Hx) on the pharmacokinetics and brain distribution of sodium fluorescein (FL), which is a widely used marker of blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Rats were subjected to Pringle maneuver (total hepatic ischemia) for 20 min with (HxIR) or without (IR) 70% hepatectomy. Sham-operated animals underwent laparotomy only. After 15 min or 8 h of reperfusion, a single 25-mg/kg dose of FL was injected intravenously and serial …

Na+/K+-Atpase α1 Mrna Expression In The Gill And Rectal Gland Of The Atlantic Stingray, Dasyatis Sabina, Following Acclimation To Increased Salinity Physiology, Andrew N. Evans, Faith N. Lambert

Faculty Publications

Background: The salt-secreting rectal gland plays a major role in elasmobranch osmoregulation, facilitating ion balance in hyperosmotic environments in a manner analogous to the teleost gill. Several studies have examined the central role of the sodium pump Na+/K+-ATPase in osmoregulatory tissues of euryhaline elasmobranch species, including regulation of Na+/K+-ATPase activity and abundance in response to salinity acclimation. However, while the transcriptional regulation of Na+/K+-ATPase in the teleost gill has been well documented the potential for mRNA regulation to facilitate rectal gland plasticity during salinity acclimation in elasmobranchs …

There Will Be Violence: A Critical Analysis Of Violence In The Works Of Cormac Mccarthy, Matthew L. Robinson Jun 2015

There Will Be Violence: A Critical Analysis Of Violence In The Works Of Cormac Mccarthy, Matthew L. Robinson

Honors Projects

This discussion of McCarthy’s use of violence in his western novels will focus primarily on the books Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West and No Country for Old Men.

Both novels feature antagonists who use war and violence to impose a new societal order. They fail in the end – they cannot succeed so long as there are individuals who refuse to conform to a widespread acceptance of violence that follows Judge Holden’s doctrine of war. In McCarthy’s novels, violence is used to impose a new order of existence. The opposition of individuals cause these imposed …

The Effects Of Arginine Vasopressin On Maternal Behavior And Aggression In Peromyscus Californicus Mothers, Nathaniel Ng Jun 2015

The Effects Of Arginine Vasopressin On Maternal Behavior And Aggression In Peromyscus Californicus Mothers, Nathaniel Ng

Honors Projects

Research studies since the 1950s have shown that a chemical within the brain called arginine vasopressin (AVP) is associated with the modulation of many different social behaviors in mammals. Some of these behaviors are related to parenting, such as parental care initiation, aggression, social recognition, depression and anxiety. Understanding the physiology behind AVP regulation could allow for the creation of new therapies for treating human social disorders, such as using an AVP receptor antagonist to attenuate anxiety. This project examines how neural injections of AVP and an AVP receptor antagonist affect both maternal care and aggression in female Peromyscus californicus …

Sweet Sacrament: Where Myth Meets Story In Ethiopian Christianity, Kelsey Ann Chase Jun 2015

Sweet Sacrament: Where Myth Meets Story In Ethiopian Christianity, Kelsey Ann Chase

Honors Projects

Tell me your favorite sports team is the Cinderella story of the century, and I understand they come from humble origins, the odds were stacked against them, and—in a serendipitous turn of events—they achieved victory. In this way, humans use the structure and vocabulary of cultural stories to make sense of their lives and describe their experience. Through three creative nonfiction short stories, this project aims to capture the synthesis of myth and personal story in the narratives of Ethiopian evangelical Christians. Gathered in Ethiopia in summer 2014, the narratives of torture, persecution, and conversion are each paired with an …

Consciousness-Raising, Error Correction And Proofreading., Josephine O'Brien Jun 2015

Consciousness-Raising, Error Correction And Proofreading., Josephine O'Brien

All Works

The paper discusses the impact of developing a consciousness-raising approach in error correction at the sentence level to improve students' proofreading ability. Learners of English in a foreign language environment often rely on translation as a composing tool and while this may act as a scaffold and provide some support, it frequently leads to predictable and persistent errors. Such fossilization can cause inaccuracies that detract from student composition and that require instruction and repeated practice in order to eradicate the errors. The current paper reports on an experiment in consciousness-raising about specific categories of errors with a group of 30 …

Triple Crown, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 2015

Triple Crown, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was a just a year ago that I wrote about the last attempt at a Triple Crown. This year we are at that point again where a race of approximately two minutes and twenty seconds will either end a remarkable era of Triple Crown futility or extend it for yet another year. And so with a few changes of the cast I submit again these observations on this marvelous weekend in horse racing history.
