Giving A Face To Immigration And Integration Processes: The Use Of Photovoice With Italian Young Adults, Nadia Rania, Laura Migliorini, Paola Cardinali, Stefania Rebora

The Qualitative Report

This study used Photovoice to investigate the perspectives of majority youth in Italy about the immigration and integration processes. The participants were 99 Italian young adults living in two northwestern regions of Italy. Images produced by young adults and subsequent discussion focused on the benefits, challenges and possible solutions to foster intergroup integration. The proposed solutions involved intergroup contact, deepening knowledge of other cultures, and recognition of immigrants’ rights. These solutions demonstrate young adults’ openness toward immigrants and their attitude regarding intercultural integration.

Questionnaire and observation check list were used to collect data which were presented in tables and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient (r) was applied to determine the relationship while hypothesis was tested with t-statistics at 0.05 probability level. …

Stakes At The Edge Of Participation: Where Words And Things Are The Entirely Serious Title Of A Problem, Li Jönsson, Tau Ulv Lensskjold Jun 2015

Stakes At The Edge Of Participation: Where Words And Things Are The Entirely Serious Title Of A Problem, Li Jönsson, Tau Ulv Lensskjold

Nordes Conference Series

This paper examines how the material performativity of experimental prototypes can provide us with new insights into what it means to “have a stake” when engaged in co-design. For participants like birds and frail elderly people, a participatory interest cannot necessarily be articulated through language and discourse. Drawing on examples from the recent research project Urban Animals and Us (UA&Us), we suggest that experimental prototypes hold the promise of material enactments of relations that enable a re-articulation of what it means to have a stake in a socio-material event. In the specific context of this project, a stake might be …

Design-Politics Nexus: Material Articulations And Modes Of Acting, Mahmoud Keshavarz Jun 2015

Design-Politics Nexus: Material Articulations And Modes Of Acting, Mahmoud Keshavarz

Nordes Conference Series

This paper is a theoretical attempt to formulate an ontological understanding of design as a set of articulations and modes of acting that manipulate the materiality of the world in order to re-direct and re-orient the possible ways of inhabiting, accessing and shaping the world. Such an understanding puts forward a way of approaching the question of politics in, of and for design that design and politics should be understood as a twofold embedded in one environment. This then has consequences both for design and for politics. I argue that these consequences can be understood better through unfolding the political …

Beyond Visualization: Exploring New Thinking In Production Team Dynamics For News Websites, Yiyun Zha Jun 2015

Beyond Visualization: Exploring New Thinking In Production Team Dynamics For News Websites, Yiyun Zha

Nordes Conference Series

As part of a larger study aiming at understanding and improving interactive reader experiences through a study of news production team dynamics, as a complex, multi-faceted endeavour, this paper looks at the key factors affecting in-house visual journalists’ view of news production and their ability to think aesthetically. A number of impacts influenced by new technologies will be explored, followed by discussion on the rationale and development of news production processes that proposes a range of challenges for creative workers. I intend to show how these movements call for a radical reconsideration of new thinking about news web site visualization.

The Meaning Of Biotic Artifacts: Studies On Fruit And Vegetables, Johanna Kleinert Jun 2015

The Meaning Of Biotic Artifacts: Studies On Fruit And Vegetables, Johanna Kleinert

Nordes Conference Series

This paper presents the plan of a research project that started in April 2015. The topic of this study are agricultural crops and their property of being both natural and artificial at the same time. To describe such living organisms at the intersection between the natural and the artificial world, one can use the terms “biotic artifacts” or “Biofakte” in German (Karafyllis 2003). This paper defines the state of research that is the basis for my work. Additionally, I explain the research design, the questions, methods and goals of this study. In the end, I give an insight into the …

That’S The Smell Of Peacetime: Designing For Electricity Load Balancing, Stina Wessman, Rebekah Olsen, Cecilia Katzeff Jun 2015

That’S The Smell Of Peacetime: Designing For Electricity Load Balancing, Stina Wessman, Rebekah Olsen, Cecilia Katzeff

Nordes Conference Series

In this exploratory paper we review, reflect, and react upon recent research that heavily critiques common design approaches towards electricity load balancing. Through this review we identify overlooked opportunity spaces for design in which we situate a prototype called Peacetime as an alternative approach to load balancing on the electrical grid. In sharp contrast to home energy management systems (HEMS) and in-home displays (IHD’s) which provide detailed energy data, Peacetime employs frameworks from slow time and emotional design, and from ambient multimodal interfaces to create a stronger and different experience in relation to load balancing. We present the Peacetime concept …

Press Play: Acts Of Defining (In) Fluid Assemblages, Johan Redström, Heather Wiltse Jun 2015

Press Play: Acts Of Defining (In) Fluid Assemblages, Johan Redström, Heather Wiltse

Nordes Conference Series

Although design continuously has been expanding its scope of concern and intervention from products to processes, experience, and entire product and service ecologies, ‘things’ remain central to how we think about design and use. But ‘things’ have changed. Contemporary materials, technologies and contexts of design and use, we argue, now result in ‘things’ that need to be understood as fluid assemblages rather than traditional objects. These often combine a surface-level simplicity of use with dynamic, sophisticated, and hidden backend complexity. In order to investigate these issues we consider a simple design case and how it has evolved over time and …

Different Data Detroit (+ Stockholm), Patricio Davila, Daniel Mccafferty, Rachele Riley, Joshua Singer Jun 2015

Different Data Detroit (+ Stockholm), Patricio Davila, Daniel Mccafferty, Rachele Riley, Joshua Singer

Nordes Conference Series

Different Data is a collaborative critical design research project by which we collect, manipulate, and display data in location-specific, and theme- driven scenarios. As research through-design and practice-based research, we investigates place and explore methods for generating and collecting data, developing an experimental approach to visualizing connections and meaning. We map hidden, overlooked and silent aspects of the urban cultural ecology. We collect narratives of cities using standard datasets transforming it to ‘different data’—that which is affective, emotional, and subjective; marginal and little-valued; esoteric and ephemeral; idiosyncratic and absurd; questionable and inappropriate. Work is executed publicly into a seamful artifact …

The City At Play / Co-Designing Games As Eco-Political Agency, Mette Agger Eriksen, Maria Hellström Reimer Jun 2015

The City At Play / Co-Designing Games As Eco-Political Agency, Mette Agger Eriksen, Maria Hellström Reimer

Nordes Conference Series

“The City At Play” displays parts of how co-design researchers in collaboration with civil servants practically have engaged in exploring urban ecologies by challenging current collaborative municipal mapping and transition processes through game development. The exhibit is a narrative installation of tangible traces from the participatory prototyping sessions and “animating” interventions into municipal planning contexts - in this case climate transition in the Öresund region. It is argued that a game inspired co-designing mind-set – rather than a problem-solving approach – presents ways to explore and critically reflect upon dynamic urban complexities as eco-political contexts of competition and collaboration across …

“Agonistic Design Matter”: Flowers, Pots And Wires, Monika Rosińska, Agata Szydłowska Jun 2015

“Agonistic Design Matter”: Flowers, Pots And Wires, Monika Rosińska, Agata Szydłowska

Nordes Conference Series

This exploratory paper provides an account on the big Polish cities that have recently undertaken major problems of so called revitalization. According to New Urbanism ideas, these projects should involve participation of inhabitants and address needs of different actors which dwell in the cities. We introduce two cases of Warsaw and Poznań where the concept of participation becomes misunderstood and the cities’ authorities’ attitude towards urban green removes it – literally and metaphorically – from the soil and makes it a city property easy to move and remove. These cases show how the cities’ policy towards urban greenery focuses different …

De-Computation: Programming The World Through Design, Kevin Walker, John Fass Jun 2015

De-Computation: Programming The World Through Design, Kevin Walker, John Fass

Nordes Conference Series

We describe a developing methodology called ‘de- computation’ which combines design making and computational thinking in a two-way exchange aimed at understanding and reacting against increasing computational control of humans’ natural, artificial and social systems, by using the tools and methods of computation in the design process. The steps of de-computation are detailed, its relation to similar approaches is explained, examples are given, and we explain its relevance for design research, theory construction and practical design work.

Discussion With Three Jackets: Making A Material Ecology, Tania Splawa-Neyman Jun 2015

Discussion With Three Jackets: Making A Material Ecology, Tania Splawa-Neyman

Nordes Conference Series

It is common today for objects and the materials of their making to be swiftly obtained and then inattentively divested, with little regard for the part that they play within living ecologies of artifice. As expressed by Anne-Marie Willis when ruminating over our ontological change imparted via design, “we no longer know how to dwell among things” (Willis 2006, under ‘From Worlding to Thinging’) Through a series of experiments that anthropomorphise and open discussions with materials, connections are cultivated that are not usual within our everyday experiences of our material world. These material conversations are founded within the creative acts …

Split Vision Urbanism: Investigating Visual Connections In Los Angeles, Per-Johan Dahl, Peter Palvén Jun 2015

Split Vision Urbanism: Investigating Visual Connections In Los Angeles, Per-Johan Dahl, Peter Palvén

Nordes Conference Series

Single-family residential zoning continues to be a key tool for carrying out planning policy in Los Angeles, and a praxis that instantly hampers design innovation from correlating suburban development with new socio-economic and cultural tendencies. An architectural ecology is, today, surfacing in Los Angeles, where generic suburban houses camouflage experimental practices that challenge the constraints of single-family residential zoning. Reconceptualizing the suburban backyard, these experimental practices pursue design intervention under the radar of planning administration to implement new forms and uses in Los Angeles. Drawing from such observations this design research project encompasses an on-going investigation at the intersection between …

The Roles Of Sketching In Design: Mapping The Tension Between Functions In Design Sketches, Peter Vistisen Jun 2015

The Roles Of Sketching In Design: Mapping The Tension Between Functions In Design Sketches, Peter Vistisen

Nordes Conference Series

This paper examines how the role of sketching in design process has been disseminated previously through a review of prior perspectives into the field. We identify that the studies of design sketching has been dominated by two perspectives: studies into what is known as ‘visual thinking’ (Goldschmidt 1991, Schön & Wiggins 1992, Tversky et al. 1999), which examines the designers reflective conversation with the sketch, and a second perspective on sketching as way of ‘visual communication’ with others in the design process (Lugt 2005, Schütze 2003, Buxton 2010). We raise the question of whether it is reasonable to combine the …

Discourse, Speculation And Multidisciplinarity: Designing Urban Futures, Ingi Helgason, Michael Smyth, Søren Rosenbak, Ivica Mitrović Jun 2015

Discourse, Speculation And Multidisciplinarity: Designing Urban Futures, Ingi Helgason, Michael Smyth, Søren Rosenbak, Ivica Mitrović

Nordes Conference Series

This paper presents a design case study of a summer school that brought together a multidisciplinary group of early-career professionals to explore ideas relating to new technologies in an urban context. The organisers of the summer school took an explicitly designinformed approach to the event, specifically a ‘critical design’ approach. The aspiration of the organisers was that the school activities would lead to the creation of an exhibition of artefacts and visual media expressing the ideas explored during the school. The expectation of generating exhibition quality outputs influenced the participants’ experience of the event, and this paper describes the process …

Engaged Sustainable Design: Creating Moral Agency, Louise St. Pierre Jun 2015

Engaged Sustainable Design: Creating Moral Agency, Louise St. Pierre

Nordes Conference Series

This paper integrates my journeys into the wilderness of northern British Columbia and the Alberta Prairies with my reflections on the relationship of sustainable design theories with an ethical practice of sustainable design. Drawing on deep ecology, Buddhism, and animism, I contend that the drive within research to connect natural systems theories to design practice is inherently instrumental and eludes the truths of the natural world. Within the domain of sustainable design, this instrumentalism reinforces an anthropocentric worldview that, as humans, we are separate from and more important than the unboundaried ecology of animals, plants, minerals and elementals (earth, water, …

Baghdad Science Journal

A new series of metal ions complexes of VO(II), Cr(III), Mn(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ce(III) have been synthesized from the Schiff bases (4-chlorobenzylidene)-urea amine (L1) and (4-bromobenzylidene)-urea amine (L2). Structural features were obtained from their elemental microanalyses, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance, FT-IR, UV–Vis, LC-Mass and 1HNMR spectral studies. The UV–Vis, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductance data of the complexes suggest a tetrahedral geometry around the central metal ion except, VOII complexes that has square pyramidal geometry, but CrIII and CeIII octahedral geometry. The biological activity for the ligand (L1) and its Vanadium and Cadmium complexes were studied. Structural geometries of …

How Realistic Is Photorealistic?, Olivia B. Holmes Jun 2015

How Realistic Is Photorealistic?, Olivia B. Holmes

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

From its inception in 1960, computer graphics (CG) technology has quickly progressed from simple 3-D models to complex, photorealistic recreations of the human face and body. Alongside this innovation, lawmakers and courts in the United States have struggled to define what is illegal, what is "obscene”, and what is protected under the First Amendment with regards to child pornography. What has emerged from this debate is that the laws surrounding child pornography hinge on whether the material in question is photographic or CG. To this end, we measure how reliable the human visual system is in distinguishing CG from photographic …

Neurotranscriptome Profiles Of Multiple Zebrafish Strains, Ryan Y. Wong, John Godwin Jun 2015

Neurotranscriptome Profiles Of Multiple Zebrafish Strains, Ryan Y. Wong, John Godwin

Biology Faculty Publications

Behavioral displays or physiological responses are often influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms in the context of the organism's evolutionary history. Understanding differences in transcriptome profiles can give insight into adaptive or pathological responses. We utilize high throughput sequencing (RNA-sequencing) to characterize the neurotranscriptome profiles in both males and females across four strains of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Strains varied by previously documented differences in stress and anxiety-like behavioral responses, and generations removed from wild-caught individuals. Here we describe detailed methodologies and quality controls in generating the rawRNA-sequencing reads that are publically available in NCBI's Gene Expression Omnibus database (GSE61108).
