Concordance Of The Montreal Cognitive Assessment With Standard Neuropsychological Measures, Sally J. Vogel, Sarah J. Banks, Jeffrey Cummings, Justin B. Miller
School of Medicine Faculty Research
Introduction: The concordance of the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) with more comprehensive neuropsychological measures remains unclear. This study examined the individual MoCA domains with more comprehensive and commonly used neuropsychological measures to determine the degree of overlap. Methods: Data included individuals seen in an outpatient neurology clinic specializing in neurodegenerative disease who were administered the MoCA and also underwent neuropsychological assessment (n = 471). A principal component analysis with varimax rotation was completed using the MoCA domain scores and comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation measures. Results: Four factors emerged accounting for 55.6% of the variance: (1) visuospatial/executive functioning; (2) memory; (3) attention; …

The model of fermentative condition was developed by the simplex-centrioid mixture design and analyzed by the response surface analysis. The results were as follows: defatted soymeal∶rice hull∶corn straw was in the ratio 5∶2∶2. Forty grams of the raw materials were added with 4 grams of glucose,0.2 grams of (NH4)2SO4 and 1× mono-microelement combination. The inoculum volum was 3.5%. The culture thickness was 1.3 cm. …
Rerouting Cellular Electron Flux To Increase The Rate Of Biological Methane Production, Jennie L. Catlett, Alicia M. Ortiz, Nicole R. Buan
Rerouting Cellular Electron Flux To Increase The Rate Of Biological Methane Production, Jennie L. Catlett, Alicia M. Ortiz, Nicole R. Buan
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Methanogens are anaerobic archaea that grow by producing methane, a gas that is both an efficient renewable fuel and a potent greenhouse gas. We observed that overexpression of the cyoplasmic heterodisulfide reductase enzyme HdrABC increased the rate of methane production from methanol by 30% without affecting the growth rate relative to the parent strain. Hdr enzymes are essential in all known methane-producing archaea. They function as the terminal oxidases in the methanogen electron transport system by reducing the coenzyme M (2-mercaptoethane sulfonate) and coenxyme B (7-mercaptoheptaonylthreonine sulfonate) heterodisulfide, CoM-S-S-CoB, to regenerate the thiol-coenzymes for reuse. In Methanosarcina acetivorans, HdrABC expression …
The Behavioral Response Of Culex Erraticus To Different Snake Odors, Lindsey E. Wells
The Behavioral Response Of Culex Erraticus To Different Snake Odors, Lindsey E. Wells
Honors College Theses
Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is an arbovirus that can cause fatal infections in humans and horses. Unfortunately, the transmission mechanisms of this virus are still largely unknown. Culex erraticus displays a strong potential for serving as a vector of EEEV because of its indiscriminate feeding pattern and abundance in areas with the highest prevalence of infection. However, Culex erraticus is incapable of over-wintering the virus, yet EEE recurs each spring. Snakes may play an important role in over-wintering the virus, and certain snake species may be infected more frequently than others. This study was conducted to determine if Culex …

Throughout the Holocene, Lake Turkana has been subject to drastic changes in lake levels and the subsistence strategies people employ to survive in this hot and arid region. In this paper, we reconstruct the position of the lake during the Holocene within a paleoclimatic context. Atmospheric forcing mechanisms are discussed in order to contextualize the broader landscape changes occurring in eastern Africa over the last 12,000 years. The Holocene is divided into five primary phases according to changes in the strand-plain evolution, paleoclimate, and human subsistence strategies practiced within the basin. Early Holocene fishing settlements occurred adjacent to high and …
Exxon Shipping Co. V. Baker: Why The Supreme Court Missed The Boat On Punitive Damages, Maria C. Klutinoty
Exxon Shipping Co. V. Baker: Why The Supreme Court Missed The Boat On Punitive Damages, Maria C. Klutinoty
Akron Law Review
This Note will touch upon the numerous constitutional challenges the doctrine of punitive damages has faced, and will discuss noteworthy Supreme Court cases preceding Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker at length, including BMW of North America, Inc. v. Gore, 5 as well as State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. v. Campbell. 6 This Note argues against the imposition of a strict one-to-one maximum ratio of punitiveto-compensatory damages. In light of the varying application of Exxon outside of the maritime context, such an imposition defeats the purpose of punitive damages by diluting their potential for deterrence, and it needlessly complicates the …

Friday afternoon, three fifteen p.m. Traffic hums merrily along as the weekend approaches. Songbirds overhead are in full voice. Far beyond the suburban streets, high in the hills, the earth is abloom with color. The world’s every breeze carries upon it the scent and the promise of summer, etc., etc.
And yet. Does the universe not teeter on the very brink of destruction?
Yes. Yes, it does teeter, on that exact brink.
Environmental Ethics: Theory And Implications For Marketing, Raymond Benton Jr.
Environmental Ethics: Theory And Implications For Marketing, Raymond Benton Jr.
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Many marketers recognize they have obligations toward the non-human world, obligations that are not fully understood. This chapter sheds light on how such marketers can justify their own feelings and persuade others. The chapter begins with the historical rise of environmental consciousness before discussing the two most influential of the Western ethical theories: Kantianism and utilitarianism. It then discusses their shortcomings before moving on to the sentimentalist approach to ethics that comes down to us from David Hume and Adam Smith. A direct line from the sentimentalist approach is drawn to the environmental/ecological ethics of Aldo Leopold. Much is left …
Detecting Executive Function Subtypes In Individuals With Schizophrenia And Healthy Controls, Jessica Pommy
Detecting Executive Function Subtypes In Individuals With Schizophrenia And Healthy Controls, Jessica Pommy
Psychology ETDs
Executive functioning (EF) impairments observed in schizophrenia (SZ) occur prior to onset of psychosis and are predictive of functional outcomes. There is significant variability in the nature and severity of EF deficits, however, and a better understanding of this heterogeneity could provide insight into the neurodevelopmental processes underlying both SZ and EFs. Using an approach similar to Fair et al., 2012, the present analysis examined heterogeneity in EFs and attempted to identify EF subtypes within healthy controls (HC) and individuals with SZ. EFs were assessed using the Trail Making Test, Verbal Fluency test, Tower of London, and Continuous Performance Test. …
The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Resting State Functional Connectivity And Its Relationship To Behavior, Carlos Rodriguez
The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Resting State Functional Connectivity And Its Relationship To Behavior, Carlos Rodriguez
Psychology ETDs
It is well established that heavy ethanol exposure during prenatal brain development leads to drastic morphological, cognitive and behavioral consequences. In contrast to heavy exposure, the effects of moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are less severe yet continue well into adulthood. Animal models of PAE have been of immense importance to researchers for their ability to control for extraneous variables such as socio economic status, age, nutrition, stress, and co-exposure to other substances. Studies of moderate PAE have investigated several discrete brain regions, neurotransmitter systems, and animal behaviors. However, the effects of moderate PAE on resting state functional network connectivity …
Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin
Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin
Psychology ETDs
Prenatal alcohol exposure results in cognitive and physical impairments in children, which are collectively defined as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The disorders account for the largest proportion of intellectual disabilities in the US. While few functional findings exist today that shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the observed impairments in individuals with FASD, animal models consistently report deleterious effects of early alcohol exposure on GABA-ergic inhibitory pathways. The post-motor beta rebound (PMBR), a transient increase of 15-30 Hz beta power in the motor cortex that follows the termination of movement, has been implicated as a neural signature of …
Effects Of Chronic Ethanol On Gaba(A) Receptors In The Vta, Ashley Nelson, Dr. Scot Steffensen
Effects Of Chronic Ethanol On Gaba(A) Receptors In The Vta, Ashley Nelson, Dr. Scot Steffensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attributes approximately 80,000 deaths annually to excessive alcohol use (CDC), and alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States (Mokdad et al., 2004). These statistics do not even describe the detrimental effects alcohol addiction has on personal lives and families. The accepted model for addiction in the brain is a change in the normal regulation of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) in the mesolimbic pathway. Studying this pathway is important in developing treatments for addiction, which has implications to improve the lives of many suffering people. The primary …

A Case Study In Toponymy: Sampling And Classifying A Tri-Lingual Place Name Inventory Found In The North-Central State Of New Mexico, Roberto H. Valdez
Geography ETDs
The north-central portion of the State of New Mexico has an extensive distribution of geographic names applied to landscape features from documented sources and from living oral tradition. Many of these geographic names originated from three distinct socio-linguistic groups, among which are names in three languages applied to single features. The three primary languages involved are Tewa, Spanish and English. Names that apply to topographical features and a selection of man-build features on the landscape were collected, mapped, and useful approaches to analyze them were developed from literature on toponymy, the study of place names. This study offers an analysis …
The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott
The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott
Special Education ETDs
Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the world, with the latest estimates showing that 1 in 68 children will be diagnosed with the condition. One of the core deficits associated with autism is social communication. Theory of mind (Baron-Cohen, 1985) posits that children with autism do not have the ability to understand that others have thoughts different from their own. This has been suggested as one of the main reasons that social communication deficits exist in children with autism. Motivation is likely the main component in effectively teaching many children with autism. Interventions that incorporate movies would seem …

Myocyte Contractility Can Be Maintained By Storing Cells With The Myosin Atpase Inhibitor 2,3 Butanedione Monoxime, Charles S. Chung, Charles Mechas, Kenneth S. Campbell
Physiology Faculty Publications
Isolated intact myocytes can be used to investigate contractile mechanisms and to screen new therapeutic compounds. These experiments typically require euthanizing an animal and isolating fresh cells each day or analyzing cultured myocytes, which quickly lose their rod-shaped morphology. Recent data suggest that the viability of canine myocytes can be prolonged using low temperature and N-benzyl-p-toluene sulfonamide (an inhibitor of skeletal myosin ATPase). We performed similar studies in rat myocytes in order to test whether the cardiac myosin ATPase inhibitors 2,3-Butanedione monoxime (BDM) and blebbistatin help to maintain cell-level function over multiple days. Myocytes were isolated from rats and separated …

Isolating And Testing Antibiotic-Producing Bacteria From Marine And Terrestrial Samples From St. Petersburg, Fl, Arianna M. Reybitz
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Many current antibacterial agents on the market are derived from compounds naturally produced by bacteria. This experiment was conducted to isolate and assess possible antibacterial strains, namely Actinomycetes, from 50 mL of marine and terrestrial samples collected from nine locations around the St. Petersburg area. The agar plates were prepared with Jensen’s AMM agar and inoculated with bacterial samples which had been diluted by factor 1:100 and heated. Three plates were initially assigned to a sample to test against three laboratory bacteria by the overlay method. Then isolates were selected and inoculated onto TSA and BHI agar plates to test …

Repurposing Ebselen For Treatment Of Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcal Infections, Shankar Thangamani, Waleed Younis, Mohamed N. Seleem
Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications
Novel antimicrobials and new approaches to developing them are urgently needed. Repurposing already-approved drugs with well-characterized toxicology and pharmacology is a novel way to reduce the time, cost, and risk associated with antibiotic innovation. Ebselen, an organoselenium compound, is known to be clinically safe and has a well-known pharmacology profile. It has shown potent bactericidal activity against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin- and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA and VRSA). We demonstrated that ebselen acts through inhibition of protein synthesis and subsequently inhibited toxin production in MRSA. Additionally, ebselen was remarkably active and significantly reduced established staphylococcal …

Temporality, Spatiality and Looking in Chantal Akermans Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) and Agnès Varda's Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) examines the ways in which atypical representations of time and space in cinema can alter the spectator's habitual perceptions, particularly regarding the structuring of looks identified by Laura Mulvey in her article 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema'. In the present work, I argue that the use of real time in the films Jeanne Dielman and Cléo from 5 to 7 allows these works to create an alternative viewing experience, eliminating the 'male gaze' that dominates …

An Empire Of Dust: Thomas Benton Catron And The Age Of Capital In The Hispano Borderlands, 1840-1921, Bryan W. Turo
History ETDs
An Empire of Dust' follows New Mexico's economic history from the arrival of merchant capitalism in the early nineteenth century to the maturation of a modern, state-oriented, capitalist economy by the 1920s. Within this scope, I investigate the economic life of Anglo-Missourian-turned-New-Mexico-robber-baron Thomas Benton Catron as well as the rise and then collapse of his land-based entrepreneurial empire. Catron was a lawyer, banker, businessman, and party politician, who entered the Territory of New Mexico in 1866, and who became entangled in its fate until his death in 1921. During the Gilded Age, Catron and his cohort employed the tools of …
