The Infectious Monster: Borders And Contagion In Yeti And Lágrimas En La Lluvia, Kiersty Lemon
The Infectious Monster: Borders And Contagion In Yeti And Lágrimas En La Lluvia, Kiersty Lemon
Theses and Dissertations
Monsters are disruptive characters, who cross boundaries and blend categories. They come in various kinds: Non-human monsters, such as Dracula, created-by-human monsters like Frankenstein, human monsters like Hitler, and more-than-human monsters such as the X-men. These monsters can either be dangerous or helpful to humanity. Dangerous monsters appear as infectious, viral forces, while helpful monsters are inoculative forces for positive change. In either case, they penetrate the borders set up between normatively separate categories. Critics and authors have long realized the connection between heroes and monsters, often portraying them as necessary to one another, as two sides of a single …
Increasing Emotion Word Productions In Children With Language Impairment With A Social Communication Intervention, Madelane Kate Dixon
Increasing Emotion Word Productions In Children With Language Impairment With A Social Communication Intervention, Madelane Kate Dixon
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the efficacy of a social communication intervention in increasing the emotion word productions in school-aged children with language impairment (LI). The study had a multiple baseline single subject design in which 5 children between the ages of 6 and 11 received 20 intervention sessions, each lasting 20 minutes. Intervention activities included reading and discussing children's books, enacting the stories using toys, and journal writing to reflect on experiences in each session. Emotion word productions during intervention sessions were coded for total productions within the categories of happiness, anger, sadness, fear, surprise, and disgust. Productions were also coded …

Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To assess completeness of reports in the Saudi Adverse Event Reporting System (SAERS), which is a part of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority pharmacovigilance system for monitoring the safety of medications. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia using the reports that were received between December 2009 and June 2012 in the SAERS. The completeness was assessed by reviewing the components of the adverse drug reactions (ADRs) form, and how many fields were completed. Descriptive statistics are reported. Result: There were 14,783 reports during the study period. Eighty percent of these reports were spontaneous reports. …
Mate Choice In Temperate And Tropical Spiny Lobsters With Contrasting Reproductive Systems, Mark Butler Iv, Rodney Bertelsen, Alison Macdiarmid
Mate Choice In Temperate And Tropical Spiny Lobsters With Contrasting Reproductive Systems, Mark Butler Iv, Rodney Bertelsen, Alison Macdiarmid
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Sperm limitation of reproductive success is common in decapod crustaceans, favouring mating systems in which females compete for large males of high reproductive value. We investigated these phenomena in two species of spiny lobsters—one temperate, one tropical—with contrasting reproductive systems: the Southern Rock Lobster (Jasus edwardsii) and the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus). We hypothesized that female mate selection should be more pronounced in the temperate J. edwardsii than in the tropical P. argus because J. edwardsii matures later, has a shorter mating season, and produces just one clutch of eggs per year that benefit from …

Hegel, Recognition, And Same-Sex Marriage, Philip J. Kain
Hegel, Recognition, And Same-Sex Marriage, Philip J. Kain
Philosophy
To understand Hegel's concepts of love, marriage, and Sittlichkeit, which are closely related, we must begin to understand his very important theory of recognition. This will be the task of Section II of this article. In pursuing this task, we must be careful to avoid the mistake, made by some commentators, of thinking that mutual recognition between equals is sufficient either for marriage or for Sittlichkeit. For Hegel, I hope to show, the more significant and powerful the recognizer, the more real the recognized—such that, ultimately, recognition must come from spirit (Geist). Then, to better understand Hegel's theory of recognition, …

Nature's Keepers?: Constructing Women’S Environmentalism In Green Marketing, Cara Okopny
Nature's Keepers?: Constructing Women’S Environmentalism In Green Marketing, Cara Okopny
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article dissects the current state of discourse in environmental advertising aimed at women, exploring the language and imagery from a feminist perspective. Examining three green advertising campaigns pervasive in women's lifestyle media in recent years, I discover that the gendered origins of environmental discourse in American popular culture continue to impact efforts to sell environmentalism to women. I trace the evolution of definitions of environmentalism in American popular culture, and comment on the debate among feminist environmentalists and media critics over these definitions. I highlight common tropes surrounding environmentalism in green advertising, such as nature's presumed purity and its …
Interactions Between Maternal Prenatal Obesity And Physiological Stress: Predictors Of Offspring Adult Obesity, Jennifer L. Hambleton, Jared Vineyard, Nicki L. Aubuchon-Endsley (Mentor)
Interactions Between Maternal Prenatal Obesity And Physiological Stress: Predictors Of Offspring Adult Obesity, Jennifer L. Hambleton, Jared Vineyard, Nicki L. Aubuchon-Endsley (Mentor)
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Over half of US women of childbearing age are overweight or obese. This is significant because excessive gestational maternal weight may program offspring for greater risk of lifetime obesity. Preliminary research suggests this effect may be moderated by fetal exposure to stress hormones, known to be dysregulated in obese individuals. However, long-term longitudinal research of these constructs is needed.
Therefore, this study used archival data from the NEFS/CPP Studies to examine interactions between maternal pre-pregnancy BMI/gestational weight gain and fetal cortisol exposure as predictors of offspring growth trajectories from birth-7 years and adult BMI via growth curve modeling and ANOVAs. …

Functional Neuroimaging Distinguishes Posttraumatic Stress Disorder From Traumatic Brain Injury In Focused And Large Community Datasets., Daniel G Amen, Cyrus A Raji, Kristen Willeumier, Derek Taylor, Robert Tarzwell, Andrew B. Newberg, Md, Theodore A Henderson
Department of Radiology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are highly heterogeneous and often present with overlapping symptomology, providing challenges in reliable classification and treatment. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) may be advantageous in the diagnostic separation of these disorders when comorbid or clinically indistinct.
METHODS: Subjects were selected from a multisite database, where rest and on-task SPECT scans were obtained on a large group of neuropsychiatric patients. Two groups were analyzed: Group 1 with TBI (n=104), PTSD (n=104) or both (n=73) closely matched for demographics and comorbidity, compared to each other and healthy controls (N=116); Group 2 …
State Refusal Triggers Constitutional Crisis: Past Is Prologue On Energy And Infrastructure, Steven Ferrey
State Refusal Triggers Constitutional Crisis: Past Is Prologue On Energy And Infrastructure, Steven Ferrey
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
There is a new Constitutional “federalism” issue, pitting multiple states versus the federal government in a legal fight over control of competitive power supply as the U.S. moves to more renewable energy. In the new electric economy, while federal agencies mandate competition, several states have refused. FERC Order 1000 prohibits states' favoring monopolies via state “Rights-of-First-Refusal” to insist that all power movement be given to incumbent monopolies rather than competitively allocated. This invokes both the Supremacy Clause under Article 8 of the Constitution, as well as the Article I Commerce Clause.
State sustainable energy policy has endured 10 recent significant …
Neonatal Isolation Stress Inhibits Pre-Weaning Weight Gain And Mild-Stressor Induced Locomotor Activity In Early Adolescent Male And Female Rats, Peter Villavecchia, Mindy Miserendino
Neonatal Isolation Stress Inhibits Pre-Weaning Weight Gain And Mild-Stressor Induced Locomotor Activity In Early Adolescent Male And Female Rats, Peter Villavecchia, Mindy Miserendino
Psychology Faculty Publications
The present study looked at the effects of neonatal isolation, an early life stress experience, in male and female early adolescent rats, an age which is underrepresented in the early stress literature. Four stress-sensitive indices were assessed: weight gain during the pre-weaning period, open field activity, and locomotor activity in response to two mild stressors: exposure to a novel environment, and a single IP saline injection. Rats in the neonatal isolation condition were removed from dam and littermates on postnatal days 2-9 in accord with the procedure used by Kehoe et al. (1995); behavioral testing occurred on PN25-PN30 during …

Story Elements for Kindergarten
This unit will help students understand that authors use story elements to create stories and that readers can anchor comprehension by identifying these elements. Two authors will be used in this inquiry over a two week period. The first week will survey books by Kevin Henkes. The second week will examine stories by Tomie dePaola. Note that other children’s authors may replace these two or may be used to continue this study. This unit was created to parallel a writing unit studying authors’ craft. Each week can be used to notice what techniques an author uses …
Bringing Agriculture Back In: The Central Place Of Agrarian Change In Rural China Studies, Qian Forrest Zhang, Carlos Oya, Jingzhong Ye
Bringing Agriculture Back In: The Central Place Of Agrarian Change In Rural China Studies, Qian Forrest Zhang, Carlos Oya, Jingzhong Ye
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Since the mid-2000s, rural development and politics in China has entered a new phase that revolves around what the central government calls ‘agricultural modernization’. Transforming the once-dominant smallholding, family-based agriculture has become a focal point of the government's programme of rural rejuvenation, where a range of economic changes unleashed by urbanization and industrialization also converge. We argue that in this new context, agrarian change has become the key vantage point from which to study rural China. We review key contributions of the papers in this special issue and highlight their insights on rural differentiation, land politics and rural livelihoods. We …
