Barriers To Computer Programming Student Success: A Quantitative Study Of Community College Students In Southwest Missouri, Tiffany D. Ford
Barriers To Computer Programming Student Success: A Quantitative Study Of Community College Students In Southwest Missouri, Tiffany D. Ford
Dissertations
Student success in computer programming courses has been a long-studied problem and computer science major retention has historically been substantially lower than other majors. The issue of retention for computer science majors has become more pronounced in two-year, open-enrollment institutions. This quantitative study, grounded in Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, attempted to address some of the causes of poor retention for entry-level computer science majors at two-year colleges by looking for predictors of student success in their first computer programming course. Two of the intelligences from Gardner’s (1993) theory, Logical-Mathematical and Visual-Spatial, were used along with two factors: student success …
Using Target Audience Analysis To Aid Strategic Level Decisionmaking, Steve Tatham Dr.
Using Target Audience Analysis To Aid Strategic Level Decisionmaking, Steve Tatham Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author explains how sophisticated social science research and behavioral profiling can be used to warn us of impeding issues and how that information might be used by senior strategy makers as a tool for testing and refining strategy. He makes a compelling case that the science of Target Audience Analysis (TAA) is now so well advanced that it must become a key component of future strategic decisionmaking. The author views social media as just another communication conduit, and sees this as a continuum of wrong activities being undertaken. In Iraq and Afghanistan, he saw how big public relations and …
An Analysis Of The Interaction Of Methylphenidate And Nicotine In Adolescent Rats: Effects On Bdnf, Elizabeth D. Freeman
An Analysis Of The Interaction Of Methylphenidate And Nicotine In Adolescent Rats: Effects On Bdnf, Elizabeth D. Freeman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This investigation was an analysis of the interaction of adolescent exposure to methylphenidate (MPH; trade name: Ritalin) on nicotine sensitization and conditioned place preference (CPP) in a rodent model and underlying mechanisms of this effect. Animals were treated IP with 1 mg/kg MPH or saline using a ―school day‖ regimen of five days on, two days off, from postnatal day (P) 28-50. During the final two weeks of MPH treatment, animals were either behaviorally sensitized to nicotine (0.5 mg/kg free base) or saline for 10 days, or conditioned to nicotine or saline using the CPP behavioral paradigm. In addition, three …

Whole animal physiological performance is highly polygenic and highly plastic, and the same is generally true for the many subordinate traits that underlie performance capacities. Quantitative genetics, therefore, provides an appropriate framework for the analysis of physiological phenotypes and can be used to infer the microevolutionary processes that have shaped patterns of trait variation within and among species. In cases where specific genes are known to contribute to variation in physiological traits, analyses of intraspecific polymorphism and interspecific divergence can reveal molecular mechanisms of functional evolution and can provide insights into the possible adaptive significance of observed sequence changes. In …

Scope—The gut microbiota is able to modulate host physiology through the production of bioactive metabolites. Our recent studies suggest that changes in gut microbiota composition upon prebiotics supplementation alter tissue levels of PUFA-derived metabolites in mice. However, in vivo evidence that gut microbes produces PUFA-derived metabolites is lacking. This study aimed to decipher the contribution of gut microbes versus that of the host in PUFA-derived metabolite production.
Methods and results—To achieve this goal, we compared the proportion of PUFA-derived metabolites and the expression of fatty acid desaturases in germ-free (GF) and conventionalized (CONV) mice fed either a low …

Barr, Elena Deliu, Gabriela Cristina Brailoiu, Pingwei Zhao, Guang Yan, Mary E. Abood, Ellen M. Unterwald, Eugen Brailoiu
College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
Cocaine promotes addictive behavior primarily by blocking the dopamine transporter, thus increasing dopamine transmission in the nucleus accumbens (nAcc); however, additional mechanisms are continually emerging. Sigma-1 receptors (σ1Rs) are known targets for cocaine, yet the mechanisms underlying σ1R-mediated effects of cocaine are incompletely understood. The present study examined direct effects of cocaine on dissociated nAcc neurons expressing phosphatidylinositol-linked D1 receptors. Endoplasmic reticulum-located σ1Rs and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptors (IP3Rs) were targeted using intracellular microinjection. IP3 microinjection robustly elevated intracellular Ca(2+) concentration, [Ca(2+)]i. While cocaine alone was devoid of an effect, the IP3-induced response was σ1R-dependently enhanced by cocaine co-injection. Likewise, …
Investigating The Role Of Cholesterol Metabolism And Synthesis In Metastasis And Radiation Response In Aggressive Subtypes Of Breast Cancer, Adam Wolfe
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Aggressive breast cancers, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), metastasize at a high rate and are notoriously resistant to standard treatments. Research has shown diets high in cholesterol increase the incidence of aggressive breast cancers and pre-clinical research has shown cholesterol can fuel the growth of breast cancer in vivo. Studies at MD Anderson have shown that IBC patients taking cholesterol lowering drugs, statins, have improved survival outcomes, and also statins can improve the response to radiation in vitro. Furthermore, statins have been shown to target the cells with stem like-properties called cancer stem cells (CSCs) which …
New Insights On The Role Of Jmjd2a In Cancer Progression, Yuan Gao
New Insights On The Role Of Jmjd2a In Cancer Progression, Yuan Gao
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Changes in chromatin architecture are known to be one of the underlying causes of cancer because of its ability to alter gene transcription. Histone methylation is one of the most intricate epigenetic marks because it adds multiple layers of modification on the targeted sites. Therefore, many studies have brought histone methylases and demethylases into focus, hoping to decipher their roles in cancer progression. Among these enzymes, JMJD2A is the first to shown to have demethylation activity against trimethylation, and to regulate gene expression, development, and cancer progression. While many studies have mainly focused on its role in transcriptional regulation, only …
Structure And Composition Of Postsynaptic Densities, Madeline Farley
Structure And Composition Of Postsynaptic Densities, Madeline Farley
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Communication between neurons within the brain occurs at chemical synapses and is fundamental for all brain functions. Modulation of the strength of communication is controlled by both presynaptic and postsynaptic mechanisms and is termed synaptic plasticity. One postsynaptic structure postulated to regulate synaptic strength is the postsynaptic density (PSD), a large electron dense protein complex located just below the synaptic membrane. The PSD, which is composed of signaling, scaffold and cytoskeletal proteins, supports and organizes neurotransmitter receptors within the synaptic membrane in addition to bridging signaling with the actin cytoskeletal network. The protein composition and structure of PSDs is known …

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Epidermal homeostasis is paramount for the ongoing function of the skin as the primary barrier between a mammalian organism and the external environment. Homeostasis is achieved through a complex and delicate balance of cell death, cell proliferation and cell differentiation. Critical for regeneration and maintenance of the skin are epidermal stem cells. Within the epidermis two distinct stem cell compartments exist, the bulge and interfollicular/basal stem cell niches, which play a central role in the regeneration of the epidermis through self-renewal and contribution to the differentiated cells of the epidermis. The bulge stem cell niche is established early in epidermal …
Ex Vivo Expanded Cord Blood Natural Killer Cells As A Novel Therapeutic For Multiple Myeloma, Nina Shah
Ex Vivo Expanded Cord Blood Natural Killer Cells As A Novel Therapeutic For Multiple Myeloma, Nina Shah
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematologic malignancy in adults and, to date, is incurable. Allogeneic natural killer (NK) cells are active in various hematologic malignancies and may have a role against MM. Umbilical cord blood is a potential source for allogeneic NK cells and ex vivo expanded umbilical cord blood-derived NK (CB-NK) cells demonstrate activity comparable to that of peripheral blood-derived NK cells. However, large-scale expansion of these cells is required for clinical translation. Here we studied a potential method for ex vivo expansion of NK cells from fresh and cryopreserved CB. Using artificial antigen presenting cells …
In Vivo Significance Of The Mdm4 And P73 Interaction During Development And Tumorigenesis, Mehrnoosh Tashakori
In Vivo Significance Of The Mdm4 And P73 Interaction During Development And Tumorigenesis, Mehrnoosh Tashakori
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The tumor suppressor protein p53 is negatively regulated by Mdm4 protein. The significance of such regulation was determined from mouse models. Mdm4-deficient mice are embryonic lethal at E7.5 in a p53-dependent manner. p73, a member of the p53-family, is a transcription factor with tumor suppressor activity. In vitro studies show that Mdm4 binds to p73 and, further, comprehensive biochemical studies revealed that Mdm4 has higher affinity for p73 than p53. However, little is known about the significance of the Mdm4 and p73 interaction in vivo. This study aimed to elucidate the biological consequences of this interaction during embryogenesis …
Methylation Of Egfr By Arginine Methyltransferase Prmt1 Enhances Egfr Signaling And Cetuximab Resistance, Hsin-Wei Liao
Methylation Of Egfr By Arginine Methyltransferase Prmt1 Enhances Egfr Signaling And Cetuximab Resistance, Hsin-Wei Liao
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Protein modifications of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) intracellular domain are well known regulators of EGFR functions whereas those of its extracellular domain remain relatively unexplored. Here, we report that methylation at R198 and R200 of EGFR extracellular domain by protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) upregulates its binding to EGF and subsequent receptor dimerization and signaling activation. Methylation-defective EGFR mutant reduced tumor growth in mouse orthotopic xenograft model. Importantly, increased EGFR methylation sustains its signaling activation and cell proliferation in the presence of therapeutic EGFR monoclonal antibody, cetuximab. EGFR methylation level also correlates with higher recurrence rate after cetuximab treatment …
Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation Reduces The Incidence Of Brain Metastasis In A Mouse Model Of Metastatic Breast Cancer, Daniel L. Smith
Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation Reduces The Incidence Of Brain Metastasis In A Mouse Model Of Metastatic Breast Cancer, Daniel L. Smith
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) is a preventative whole-brain irradiation technique used to reduce the incidence of brain metastasis and improve overall survival in select patients with small cell lung cancer and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A population of breast cancer patients – stage IV, HER2+ or triple-negative – has emerged as having a high risk of developing brain metastases. Because only 10-20% of breast cancer patients diagnosed with brain metastases survive longer than one year, in this high-risk population the benefit of PCI – potential for reduced incidence of brain metastasis and improved overall survival – may outweigh the risks – …

Abstract
Prion diseases, also known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), are a group of debilitating neurodegenerative disorders that affect both humans and animals. They can be spread by horizontal transmission as seen in chronic wasting disease in deer and elk population. In addition, transmission to humans has also been documented which includes bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans due to consumption of contaminated meat. The most probable natural route of transmission is by oral consumption of infectious material. Even …
Ankyrin-B And Mtor Complex 1 In The Regulation Of Electrical Activities In The Heart, Henry C. Wu, Henry C. Wu
Ankyrin-B And Mtor Complex 1 In The Regulation Of Electrical Activities In The Heart, Henry C. Wu, Henry C. Wu
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activity is paramount in the regulation of electrical activities in the brain and the heart. In the brain, the tumor suppressor gene TSC2 encodes the protein product tuberin that interacts with hamartin to form a heterodimer Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) that regulates mTORC1. When TSC2 is disrupted, mTORC1 activity becomes dysregulated resulting in abnormal electrical activities in the brain manifesting in the form of epileptic seizures. In the heart, mTORC1 activity is triggered by a sustained increase in hemodynamic pressure causing the heart to electrically remodel. A likely candidate serving as the …
Regulation Of Autoimmune Germinal Center Reaction By Tfh Cells And Application Of Tfr-Like Cells For The Treatment Of Autoimmune B Cell Responses, Young Uk Kim
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Excessive follicular helper T (Tfh) cell responses to self-antigens are associated with antibody-mediated autoimmune diseases in humans including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Numeral and functional aberrations of T regulatory T (Treg) cells are common in patients with autoimmune diseases. Although different types of immunosuppressive agents have been used clinically to treat antibody-mediated autoimmune diseases, they generally have side effects due to the lack of target-specificity. To minimalize the adverse effects, there is a need to develop target-specific therapeutics which specifically control auto-reactive B cell responses and auto-reactive Tfh cell responses. Recent studies unveiled that Foxp3+ Treg cells expressing CXCR5 …
Functional Analysis Of Synthetic Gene Circuits Controlling A Protein Pump In Yeast, Junchen Diao
Functional Analysis Of Synthetic Gene Circuits Controlling A Protein Pump In Yeast, Junchen Diao
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Synthetic biology aims to build biological devices to understand living systems and explore new applications. Synthetic gene circuits such as genetic switches, oscillators and logic gates are at the core of many synthetic biology applications. These gene circuits often include a sensor/regulator protein capable to detect small molecules and then transduce them into a regulatory signal to generate measurable output. Similar signal transduction networks are also abundant in nature. However, in many natural and engineered scenarios, the output also affects the regulator/sensor protein. How such interactions between the regulator/sensor and the output affect synthetic gene circuit function has not been …

Design And Development Of A Selectively Absorbable Multiphasic Hernia Mesh An In Vivo Performance As It Relates To Biocompatibility, Georgios T. Hilas
All Dissertations
Hernia repair is one of the most frequently performed surgical operations, with the vast majority of these surgeries employing a “tension-free” repair technique with synthetic surgical meshes. Traditionally, meshes for hernia repair have been designed with high strength in order to produce a robust repair; unfortunately, current designs are unable to respond to the dynamic biological needs of the wound healing process. As a result, patients undergoing mesh hernioplasty often suffer from mesh contraction, reduced wound site compliance, fibrosis, and/or chronic pain. The aim of this dissertation was to design and assess a novel, selectively absorbable mesh system for soft …
Re-Establishing The Theoretical Foundations Of A Truncated Normal Distribution: Standardization Statistical Inference, And Convolution, Jinho Cha
All Dissertations
There are special situations where specification limits on a process are implemented externally, and the product is typically reworked or scrapped if its performance does not fall in the range. As such, the actual distribution after inspection is truncated. Despite the practical importance of the role of a truncated distribution, there has been little work on the theoretical foundation of standardization, inference theory, and convolution. The objective of this research is three-fold. First, we derive a standard truncated normal distribution and develop its cumulative probability table by standardizing a truncated normal distribution as a set of guidelines for engineers and …

Linkage Analysis And Compositional Studies Of Β-Glucan From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae And Compositional Studies Of Mannan From Candida Albicans, Clara Arthur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The efficacy of a novel carbohydrate extraction procedure was investigated with methylation analysis and alditol acetate method by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. A published extraction procedure for β-glucans was compared to one developed in house. Both procedures gave a dominant glucose peak in the Gas chromatogram indicative of successful β-glucan isolation. Further linkage studies showed four linkage positions for β-glucans isolated with the published method; terminal, 1,3-linkage, 1,6-linkage and 1,3,6-linkage, while β-glucans isolated using the new method showed six linkage positions; terminal, 1,3-linkage, 1,6-linkage, 1,4-linkage, 1,2,3-linkage and 1,3,6-linkage. Diminishing β-glucan linkage peaks in the chromatogram for the published method indicated structure …

Physiological Performance Of Warm-Adapted Marine Ectotherms : Thermal Limits Of Mitochondrial Energy Transduction Efficiency., Eloy Martinez, Eric Hendricks, Michael Menze, Joseph Torres
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Thermal regimes in aquatic systems have profound implications for the physiology of ectotherms. In particular, the effect of elevated temperatures on mitochondrial energy transduction (i.e. energy from carbon substrates to ATP) in tropical and subtropical teleosts may have profound consequences on organismal performance and population viability. Upper and lower whole-organism critical temperatures for teleosts suggest that subtropical and tropical species are not susceptible to the warming trends associated with climate change, but sub-lethal effects on energy transduction efficiency and population dynamics remain unclear. The goal of the present study was to compare the thermal sensitivity of processes associated with mitochondrial …
Overcoming Acquired Resistance To Braf Inhibitors By Novel Synergistic Drug Combination And Discovery Of Novel Smac Mimetics As Selective Survivin Inhibitors, Jin Wang
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The first part (Chapter 1 and 2) of this dissertation presents a novel combination study of melanoma therapy. Acquired clinical resistance to vemurafenib, a selective BRAFV600E inhibitor, arises frequently after short term chemotherapy. Since the inhibitions of targets in the RAFMEK-ERK pathway result in G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, vemurafenib-resistant cancer cells are expected to escape this cell cycle arrest and progress to subsequent G2/M phase. We hypothesized that a combined therapy using vemurafenib with a G2/M phase blocking agent will trap resistant cells and overcome vemurafenib resistance. To test this hypothesis, we first determined the combination index (CI) values of …
An International Legal Framework For Se4all: Human Rights And Sustainable Development Law Imperatives, Thoko Kaime, Robert L. Glicksman
An International Legal Framework For Se4all: Human Rights And Sustainable Development Law Imperatives, Thoko Kaime, Robert L. Glicksman
Fordham International Law Journal
This Article examines the genesis and context of SE4All, placing the effort within both its historical and international policy contexts. It highlights the voluntary nature of the initiative and argues that its effective implementation and the achievement of its goals require the articulation of an applicable international legal framework that aids the transformation of SE4All’s policy actions into binding international legal commitments. The article contends that such a transformation does not depend on the creation of entirely new legal rules or institutions. Instead, an effective framework for successful implementation of SE4All can be derived from existing rules of international human …
Examining The Association Between Children's Fruit And Vegetable Intake At And Away From School, Velarie Yaa Ankrah Ansu
Examining The Association Between Children's Fruit And Vegetable Intake At And Away From School, Velarie Yaa Ankrah Ansu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Several school-based interventions aimed at increasing fruit and vegetables (FV) intake among children have demonstrated success in short-term interventions. The Fit Game is a school-based intervention aimed at encouraging children to consume increasing amounts of FV during a game, which is a narrative. Just as children are being encouraged to eat FV at school, so is it equally important for them to eat FV at home. Parents strongly influence the amount of FV children consume at home. The aim of this thesis is to examine associations between factors that influence consumption of fruits and vegetables at and away from school …

Gower And The Peasants’ Revolt, Ian Cornelius
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay examines the moral and political thought of John Gower's poem on the English Rising of 1381, situating it within three contrastive fields: Gower’s moral project, his Virgilian intertext, and the practices of moral community employed by the rebels of 1381.
