The Product Liability Of Manufacturers: An Understanding And Exploration, Donald M. Jenkins Aug 2015

The Product Liability Of Manufacturers: An Understanding And Exploration, Donald M. Jenkins

Akron Law Review

The beginning point will be an examination of the existing theories of manufacturer's liability namely, negligence, contract warranty and strict liability. For example purposes, Ohio law will be used to illustrate the interpretative development of the law and its application. Ohio is a legitimate jurisdiction for this purpose. It has been a pace-setting jurisdiction in the development of the law and has arrived at the point of accepting the concept of strict liability for defective products. Furthermore, the evolution of product liability law in Ohio typifies the pattern that has occurred or is occurring in a majority of the other …

The Product Liability Of Manufacturers: An Understanding And Exploration, Donald M. Jenkins

Akron Law Review

The evolution and application of product liability law in the past fifteen years represents one of the most dynamic developments in law.

The result of these rapid and violent developments has been to substantially increase the susceptibility of producers to suits by members of the public in direct actions. It was assumed the crest of the wave of expanded product liability was reached with the formulation of the legal principles set forth in Section 402A of the Restatement (Second) of the Law of Torts. However, subsequent court actions proved this assumption to be invalid.

Science, Policy And The Developing Frontiers Of International Law, L.F. E. Goldie Aug 2015

Science, Policy And The Developing Frontiers Of International Law, L.F. E. Goldie

Akron Law Review

SCIENCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN a most important, if not the most important, agent of legal change. The hydraulic engineering achievements of ancient Egypt and China not only determined the laws of land ownership, use and planning, but also the administrative and constitutional structure of society. Where would the law of the sea be without the development of ships and the science of navigation? In a lighter view too we can imagine chariots creating traffic problems (and laws) on the Appian Way, or in the main streets of Athens and Pompeii-for it created problems for pedestrians both in peace and war

Acidic And Basic Destruction Of Tissues, Cydney Eaton Aug 2015

Acidic And Basic Destruction Of Tissues, Cydney Eaton

University Honors Program

A coroner’s case I had learned about involved a man attempting to dispose of a body with acid. Shortly after exposure, the man was apprehended and the body was located. Upon investigation, police force determined the acid used to be hydrochloric acid, however, exact concentration remains unknown (Kohr, 2010). This led to the question of which easily accessible acid works best to degrade tissue. To answer this, an experiment was conducted involving pig feet and various concentrations of common acids and a single strong base. The feet were submerged in the solutions overnight and mass percent lost or gained was …

Designing For Practice Development In A Social Learning System: Communicating Norms And Vicarious Experience, Claire Loe Aug 2015

Designing For Practice Development In A Social Learning System: Communicating Norms And Vicarious Experience, Claire Loe

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Over the past quarter century, the United States has experienced an increase in demand for health services. Expanded use of community health workers (CHWs) has been identified as a strategic response for more effective distribution of healthcare resources by alleviating pressures on clinical personnel and infusing prevention education into the community-to-clinical care continuum. Expansion of the CHW workforce poses many challenges. For CHWs to effectively reduce costs and pressures on the healthcare system, ‘expansion’ implies not only increasing their numbers, but also assuring a workforce that has the capacity to perform in diverse settings. I propose a theoretical framework for …

Application Of Ichip To Grow “Uncultivable” Microorganisms And Its Impact On Antibiotic Discovery, Rinzhin T. Sherpa, Caretta J. Reese, Hamidreza Montazeri Aliabadi

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Purpose. Antibiotics have revolutionized modern medicine, allowing significant progress in healthcare and improvement in life expectancy. Development of antibiotic resistance by pathogenic bacteria is a natural phenomenon; however, the rate of antibiotic resistance emergence is increasing at an alarming rate, due to indiscriminate use of antibiotics in healthcare, agriculture and even everyday products. Traditionally, antibiotic discovery has been conducted by screening extracts of microorganisms for antimicrobial activity. However, this conventional source has been over-used to such an extent that it poses the risk of “running out” of new antibiotics. Aiming to increase access to a greater diversity of microorganisms, …

Development Of A Clickable Bimodal Fluorescent/Pet Probe For In Vivo Imaging, Andreas Paulus, Pooja Desai, Brandon Carney, Giuseppe Carlucci, Thomas Reiner, Christian Brand, Wolfgang A. Weber

Publications and Research

Background Fluorescent imaging agents are becoming evermore important in preclinical and clinical research. They do, however, suffer from poor tissue penetration, which makes optical fluorescence imaging incompatible with whole-body imaging techniques. The design of novel bimodal PET active and fluorescent tracers could therefore combine the benefits of optical imaging with radioactively labeled imaging probes. Herein, we report the synthesis and evaluation of a clickable 18F-labeled fluorescent dye. Methods An azide-modified BODIPY-Fl dye could be successfully radio-labeled with 18F using an 18F/19F exchange reaction of the boron-fluoride core of the BODIPY dye to yield a clickable bimodal PET/fluorescent imaging tool. In …

Translational Treatment Of Aphasia Combining Neuromodulation And Behavioral Intervention For Lexical Retrieval: Implications From A Single Case Study, Elizabeth E. Galletta, Amy Vogel-Eyny

Publications and Research

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive method of brain stimulation, is an adjunctive research-therapy for aphasia. The concept supporting translational application of tDCS is that brain plasticity, facilitated by language intervention, can be enhanced by non-invasive brain stimulation. This study combined tDCS with an ecologically focused behavioral approach that involved training nouns and verbs in sentences. Method: Participant: A 43-year-old, right-handed male with fluent-anomic aphasia who sustained a single-left-hemisphere-temporal-parietal stroke was recruited. Treatment: Instrumentation included the Soterix Medical 1 × 1 Device. Anodal tDCS was applied over Broca’s area. Behavioral materials included: sentence production, naming in the sentence …

Nutrient Dynamics Of Floating Seagrass Wracks In Greater Florida Bay, Rachel A. Perry Aug 2015

Nutrient Dynamics Of Floating Seagrass Wracks In Greater Florida Bay, Rachel A. Perry

Master's Theses

Floating aggregations of seagrass wrack (i.e., leaves shed from seagrass beds) can serve as an ecological “hot spot” contributing to the survival of many species in the form of habitat and food source. Considerable research has been done on assessing trophic transfer of nutrients from seagrass wrack that is washed ashore, but little is known about nutrient dynamics in floating seagrass wrack. Here, drifters were deployed to track the location of floating wracks created in Greater Florida Bay and mesocosm experiments were conducted on two different of floating macrophytes (Syringodium filiforme, Thalassia testudinum, and Sargassum sp.) to estimate …

Influence Of Dietary Experience On The Induction Of Preference Of Adult Moths And Larvae For A New Olfactory Cue, Christophe Petit, Bruno Le Ru, Stéphane Dupas, Brigitte Frérot, Peter Ahuya, Laure Kaiser-Arnauld, Myriam Harry, Paul André Calatayud

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In Lepidoptera, host plant selection is first conditioned by oviposition site preference of adult females followed by feeding site preference of larvae. Dietary experience to plant volatile cues can induce larval and adult host plant preference. We investigated how the parent's and self-experience induce host preference in adult females and larvae of three lepidopteran stem borer species with different host plant ranges, namely the polyphagous Sesamia nonagrioides, the oligophagous Busseola fusca and the monophagous Busseola nairobica, and whether this induction can be linked to a neurophysiological phenotypic plasticity. The three species were conditioned to artificial diet enriched with vanillin from …

Geoheritage, A National Inventory In France, P De Wever, Kn Page, I Alterio, G Egoroff, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Good protection measures for geological heritage should begin with an inventory of geosites. In France, for example, a law enacted in 2002 grants formal recognition to the notion of geological heritage. An inventory and evaluation were then established on a region-by-region basis. By April 2007, the French Ministry of Environment launched the inventory programme for the nation’s geological heritage and the data are now being collected at a regional scale. The data are being gathered and homogenised, and then transferred to the French National Museum of Natural History for examination. The ratified site data are stored and available for public …

UNLABELLED: Factors providing trophic support to diverse enteric neuron subtypes remain poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the HGF receptor MET might support some types of enteric neurons. HGF and MET are expressed in fetal and adult enteric nervous system. In vitro, HGF increased enteric neuron differentiation and neurite length, but only if vanishingly small amounts (1 pg/ml) of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor were included in culture media. HGF effects were blocked by phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase inhibitor and by MET-blocking antibody. Both of these inhibitors and MEK inhibition reduced neurite length. In adult mice, …

Infinity And Beyond, James M. Derflinger Ii Aug 2015

Infinity And Beyond, James M. Derflinger Ii

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

This paper attempts to explore the concept of infinity regarding the nature of God, by responding to several criticisms regarding the concept of an infinite being. Andrew Lavin, in his article The Theological use of Infinity explains that the concept of an infinite God is inconsistent, and suggests that a finite God would be more conceivable. This paper analyzes each of Lavin's objections and his reasoning behind them as well as his understanding of the concept of infinity in itself.

The Reach Of The Law: Sin, Crime And Poor Taste, Alexander B. Smith, Harriet Pollack Aug 2015

The Reach Of The Law: Sin, Crime And Poor Taste, Alexander B. Smith, Harriet Pollack

Akron Law Review

The past decade has been a period of intensive reevaluation of the law. The criminal law, in particular, has been subjected to an especially intensive criticism. These attacks fall largely into two categories: criticisms of the legitimacy of our penal codes, and criticisms of their efficiency.
Starting with the Civil Rights Movement of the Kennedy era with its heavy emphasis on civil disobedience as a tool of protest, the legitimacy of many of our laws was called into question. When Rosa Parks sat in the front of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama, she was not simply breaking the law; she …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Vanillyl Alcohol Based Thermosetting Epoxy Resins, Eric Hernandez Aug 2015

Synthesis And Characterization Of Vanillyl Alcohol Based Thermosetting Epoxy Resins, Eric Hernandez

Theses and Dissertations

Lignin is a natural and abundant renewable material composed of crosslinked phenylpropenyl units that when strategically depolymerized could potentially yield renewable bio-based aromatic building blocks for applications in high-performance thermosetting epoxy resins. Vanillyl alcohol, a lignin derived aromatic diol, is a potential platform chemical for the production of renewable bisphenols and epoxy thermosets. A new bio-based bisphenol (bisguaiacol) was synthesized via electrophilic aromatic condensation of vanillyl alcohol and guaiacol, from which diglycidyl ether of bisguaiacol (DGEBG) was prepared via epoxidation with epichlorohydrin. The thermomechanical properties of DGEBG blended with a commercial BPA-based epoxy resin and cured with a diamine were investigated …
