Women, Sex, And God: Women's Sexuality And The Internalization Of Religious Messages, Petra Sterling Blum Dec 2015

Women, Sex, And God: Women's Sexuality And The Internalization Of Religious Messages, Petra Sterling Blum

Dissertations

Grounded theory methodology was used to explore women’s internalization of religious messages regarding their sexuality. Two research questions served as the guide for this study: how are women’s sexual self-views informed by their religious teaching, and how are these messages, along with their experiences, lived in them sexually, psychologically, and spiritually? Eleven women (ages 30-74) were chosen who had been raised in a Western Christian tradition in the US (8 Protestant, 3 Catholic). Participants were interviewed through an in-depth three-interview process to gain an understanding of their experiences and how they resolved their concerns with sex and spirit. The findings …

Rna-Sequencing Reveals Global Transcriptomic Changes In Nicotiana Tabacum Responding To Topping And Treatment Of Axillary-Shoot Control Chemicals, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Yongmei Wu, Jayadri S. Ghosh, Sitakanta Pattanaik, Colin Fisher, Ying Wang, Darlene Lawson, Ling Yuan Dec 2015

Rna-Sequencing Reveals Global Transcriptomic Changes In Nicotiana Tabacum Responding To Topping And Treatment Of Axillary-Shoot Control Chemicals, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Yongmei Wu, Jayadri S. Ghosh, Sitakanta Pattanaik, Colin Fisher, Ying Wang, Darlene Lawson, Ling Yuan

Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development Center Faculty Publications

Removal of terminal buds (topping) and control of the formation of axillary shoots (suckers) are common agronomic practices that significantly impact the yield and quality of various crop plants. Application of chemicals (suckercides) to plants following topping is an effective method for sucker control. However, our current knowledge of the influence of topping, and subsequent suckercide applications, to gene expression is limited. We analyzed the differential gene expression using RNA-sequencing in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) that are topped, or treated after topping by two different suckercides, the contact-localized-systemic, Flupro® (FP), and contact, Off-Shoot-T®. Among the differentially …

Are Microbes Fundamentally Different Than Macroorganisms? Convergence And A Possible Case For Neutral Phenotypic Evolution In Testate Amoeba (Amoebozoa: Arcellinida), Angela M. Oliverio, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Jessica Grant, Laura A. Katz Dec 2015

Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

This study reveals extensive phenotypic convergence based on the non-monophyly of genera and morphospecies of testate (shelled) amoebae. Using two independent markers, small subunit ribosomal DNA (ssu-rDNA) and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI), we demonstrate discordance between morphology and molecules for ‘core Nebela’ species (Arcellinida; Amoebozoa). Prior work using just a single locus, ssu-rDNA, also supported the non-monophyly of the genera Hyalosphenia and Nebela as well as for several morphospecies within these genera. Here, we obtained COI gene sequences of 59 specimens from seven morphospecies and ssu-rDNA gene sequences of 50 specimens from six morphospecies of hyalosphenids. Our analyses …

Population Density Of The Florida Scrub Lizard (Sceloporus Woodi) In Managed Sand Pine Scrub And Longleaf Pine Sandhill Habitats, Matthew D. Kaunert, Lance D. Mcbrayer

Biology: Faculty Publications

Studies investigating managed landscapes are of increasing importance, as fragmentation is a known cause of biodiversity loss. From June to September 2012, we sampled populations of the rare, endemic Florida Scrub Lizard (Sceloporus woodi) across the Ocala National Forest (ONF) to compare lizard density across two managed habitat types. Florida Scrub habitat in the ONF is clearcut and roller-chopped, whereas Longleaf Pine habitat is managed via prescribed burning. We sampled 10 stands of Florida Scrub (2–3 y post disturbance) and 10 stands of Longleaf Pine (1 y post-disturbance) for lizards. We compared lizard density between the interior of …

The Cult Novel: Three Paradigmatic Cases—L’Immoraliste, Bonjour Tristesse, Extension Du Domaine De La Lutte, Joseph A. Barreira Dec 2015

The Cult Novel: Three Paradigmatic Cases—L’Immoraliste, Bonjour Tristesse, Extension Du Domaine De La Lutte, Joseph A. Barreira

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation proposes that there are specific and observable reasons why certain novels have attained the status of, and been commonly called, “cult novels” or “cult fiction”. It also proposes to delineate the development of this process through three major French novels of the twentieth century: André Gide’s L’Immoraliste (1902), Françoise Sagan’s Bonjour Tristesse (1954), and Michel Houellebecq’s Extension du Domaine de la Lutte (1994) as paradigmatic novels of the genre.

Since cult fiction covers a wide range of literary “registers”, from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird, a realist novel seemingly aimed at “young readers”, to such …

Effect Of Labor Epidural Analgesia With Hydromorphone On Neonatal Neurobehavior And Breastfeeding Behavior In The First 24 Hours Of Life, Cynthia French Dec 2015

Effect Of Labor Epidural Analgesia With Hydromorphone On Neonatal Neurobehavior And Breastfeeding Behavior In The First 24 Hours Of Life, Cynthia French

Doctoral Dissertations

Epidural opioids and local anesthetics may depress the neonatal reflexes necessary for breastfeeding success. Literature review yielded no data for hydromorphone and conflicting results for fentanyl. This study investigated whether breastfeeding effectiveness would be less in infants whose mothers received epidural analgesia with hydromorphone compared with those whose mothers received no analgesia, and whether the total amount of drugs given or the presence of multiple stressful events or interventions would be related to the effectiveness of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding behaviors were studied in 51 infants whose mothers chose epidural analgesia compared with 51 infants whose mothers chose to have no analgesia. …

Iron-Dependent Gene Expression In Actinomyces Oris, Matthew P. Mulé, David Giacalone, Kayla Lawlor, Alexa Golden, Caroline Cook, Thomas Lott, Elizabeth Aksten, George A. O'Toole, Lori J. Bergeron Dec 2015

Iron-Dependent Gene Expression In Actinomyces Oris, Matthew P. Mulé, David Giacalone, Kayla Lawlor, Alexa Golden, Caroline Cook, Thomas Lott, Elizabeth Aksten, George A. O'Toole, Lori J. Bergeron

Dartmouth Scholarship

Actinomyces oris is a Gram-positive bacterium that has been associated with healthy and diseased sites in the human oral cavity. Most pathogenic bacteria require iron to survive, and in order to acquire iron in the relatively iron-scarce oral cavity A. oris has been shown to produce iron-binding molecules known as siderophores. The genes encoding these siderophores and transporters are thought to be regulated by the amount of iron in the growth medium and by the metal-dependent repressor, AmdR, which we showed previously binds to the promoter of proposed iron-regulated genes.

Genetic Analysis Of The Henry Mountains Bison Herd, Dustin H. Ranglack, Lauren K. Dobson, Johan T. Du Toit, James Derr Dec 2015

Genetic Analysis Of The Henry Mountains Bison Herd, Dustin H. Ranglack, Lauren K. Dobson, Johan T. Du Toit, James Derr

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Wild American plains bison (Bison bison) populations virtually disappeared in the late 1800s, with some remnant animals retained in what would become Yellowstone National Park and on private ranches. Some of these private bison were intentionally crossbred with cattle for commercial purposes. This forced hybridization resulted in both mitochondrial and nuclear introgression of cattle genes into some of the extant bison genome. As the private populations grew, excess animals, along with their history of cattle genetics, provided founders for newly established public bison populations. Of the US public bison herds, only those in Yellowstone and Wind Cave National Parks (YNP …

Selective Vip Receptor Agonists Facilitate Immune Transformation For Dopaminergic Neuroprotection In Mptp-Intoxicated Mice., Katherine E. Olson, Lisa M. Kosloski-Bilek, Kristi M. Anderson, Breha J. Diggs, Barbara E. Clark, John M. Gledhill, Scott J. Shandler, R. Lee Mosley, Howard Gendelman

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

UNLABELLED: Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) mediates a broad range of biological responses by activating two related receptors, VIP receptor 1 and 2 (VIPR1 and VIPR2). Although the use of native VIP facilitates neuroprotection, clinical application of the hormone is limited due to VIP's rapid metabolism and inability to distinguish between VIPR1 and VIPR2 receptors. In addition, activation of both receptors by therapeutics may increase adverse secondary toxicities. Therefore, we developed metabolically stable and receptor-selective agonists for VIPR1 and VIPR2 to improve pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic therapeutic end points. Selective agonists were investigated for their abilities to protect mice against MPTP-induced neurodegeneration …

Midwinter, Jack Williams Phd, Med Dec 2015

Midwinter, Jack Williams Phd, Med

Akesis

"Midwinter" was written in memory of my sister, Shannon Williams, who died at age 49 in 2007 from alcohol-related issues. The poem was intended to capture the paradox of her life...what we saw and what we didn't see. Her life served as a point of reassessment and resetting for me...a new beginning...as I discovered great empathy and love in that grief. And it marked my new journey as a poet. Starting with her eulogy eight years ago, I have written over a hundred poems.

Testing The Selectivity Of Pesticide Effects On Natural Enemies In Laboratory Bioassays, Kaushalya G. Amarasekare, Peter Shearer, Nicholas J. Mills

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

The toxic effects of older classes of pesticides on natural enemies are typically acute and exposure usually occurs through direct contact with foliar residues. However, older chemistries are being replaced by newer classes of pesticides that can cause sublethal effects in addition to direct mortality. We developed a set of life table response protocols to quantify the effects of multiple routes of exposure to pesticides on individual-level life history parameters of predators and parasitoids. We then integrated the data into population-level endpoint estimates of population growth rates using stage-structured population models. For this study, we evaluated the impacts of five …

Eet-Dependent Potentiation Of Pulmonary Arterial Pressure: Sex-Different Regulation Of Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase, Sharath Kandhi, Jun Qin, Ghezal Froogh, Houli Jiang, Meng Luo, Michael S. Wolin, An Huang, Dong Sun

NYMC Faculty Publications

We tested the hypothesis that suppression of epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EET) metabolism via genetic knockout of the gene for soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH-KO), or female-specific downregulation of sEH expression, plays a role in the potentiation of pulmonary hypertension. We used male (M) and female (F) wild-type (WT) and sEH-KO mice; the latter have high pulmonary EETs. Right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in control and in response to in vivo administration of U46619 (thromboxane analog), 14,15-EET, and 14,15-EEZE [14,15-epoxyeicosa-5(z)-enoic acid; antagonist of EETs] were recorded. Basal RVSP was comparable among all groups of mice, whereas MABP …

Comparative Effects Of Intranasal Neuropeptide Y And Hs014 In Preventing Anxiety And Depressive-Like Behavior Elicited By Single Prolonged Stress, Esther L. Sabban, Lidia I. Serova, Lishay G. Alaluf, Marcela Laukova, Chandana Peddu

NYMC Faculty Publications

Stress triggered neuropsychiatric disorders are a serious societal problem. Prophylactic treatment or early intervention has great potential in increasing resilience to traumatic stress and reducing its harmful impact. Previously, we demonstrated proof of concept that intranasal administration of neuropeptide Y (NPY) or the melanocortin receptor four (MC4R) antagonist, HS014, prior to single prolonged stress (SPS) rodent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) model, can prevent or attenuate many PTSD associated impairments. Here, we compare effects of NPY or HS014 given 30 min before or immediately after SPS stressors on development of anxiety, depressive-like behavior and associated biochemical abnormalities. SPS triggered anxiety on …

An Incongruent Amalgamation: John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism On Naturalism, Jeffrey M. Robinson Dec 2015

An Incongruent Amalgamation: John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism On Naturalism, Jeffrey M. Robinson

Liberty Theological Review

John Stuart Mill's utilitarian principle of the greatest happiness for the greatest number, often surfaces in cultural debates in the contemporary West over the extent and foundations of moral duties. Given the drift from its historical Judeo-Christian moorings, naturalism now provides much of the epistemic grounding in Western culture in relation to moral duties. The amalgamation of Mill’s utilitarianism and naturalism has resulted in a cultural and epistemic disconnect. Naturalism is hard-pressed to provide consistent epistemic support for Mill’s utilitarian principle. This essay provides a number of suggestions as to why Mill’s utilitarianism may be inconsistent on naturalism.

When Addressing Climate Change, Don’T Forget Animal Agriculture, Aaron Matzke

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

As COP 21 closes in Paris, global animal agriculture is a topic that has eluded the international media. Animal agriculture is responsible for more global greenhouse gas emissions than transportation according to the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization. With global population and prosperity rising, the global meat supply is expected to nearly double by 2050. This increase in production will only be achieved if significant steps are taken to promote sustainability through existing techniques globally, and to regulate air contamination in industrial feedlots in the United States. Alternative meat production methods, which have seen considerable investment recently, could supplement animal …

(Same) Sex, Lies, And Democracy: Tradition, Religion, And Substantive Due Process (With An Emphasis On Obergefell V. Hodges), Stephen M. Feldman

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Substantive due process issues implicitly concern voice. Whose voice will be heard? Although such issues often remain submerged, the Justices occasionally translate them into disputes over democratic participation and power. The Supreme Court’s most important substantive due process decision in years, Obergefell v. Hodges, entailed such a battle over democracy. The multiple dissenting opinions insisted that the decision demeaned the opponents of same-sex marriage, many of whom were inspired by traditional values and religious convictions. The majority explicitly disagreed, reasoning that the case resolved the rights of same-sex couples to marry and did not diminish the opponents’ voices. The dissenters …

On The Use Of The Linear Interaction Energy Method To Predict Affinities Of Charged Aromatic Ammines To Naturally Occurring Clay Minerals, Milinda A. Samaraweera

Doctoral Dissertations

This study presents the use of the linear interaction energy (LIE) method as a predictive tool to approximate the free energies of sorption of organic cations to naturally occurring clay mineral montmorillonite. One objective of this thesis is to explore the applicability and the accuracy of LIE, originated in the biochemistry field, as a predictive tool to estimate the free energies of sorption of organic cations to naturally occurring aluminosilicates. For this purpose, a set of charged aromatic amines sorbing to a prototypical homoionic clay montmorillonite (MMT) with calcium ions were modeled using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. As the LIE …
