Imaging Through Ground-Level Turbulence By Fourier Telescopy: Simulations And Preliminary Experiments, Nishantha Randunu-Pathirannehelage
Imaging Through Ground-Level Turbulence By Fourier Telescopy: Simulations And Preliminary Experiments, Nishantha Randunu-Pathirannehelage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Fourier telescopy imaging is a recently-developed imaging method that relies on active structured-light illumination of the object. Reflected/scattered light is measured by a large “light bucket” detector; processing of the detected signal yields the magnitude and phase of spatial frequency components of the object reflectance or transmittance function. An inverse Fourier transform results in the image. In 2012 a novel method, known as time-average Fourier telescopy (TAFT), was introduced by William T. Rhodes as a means for diffraction-limited imaging through ground-level atmospheric turbulence. This method, which can be applied to long horizontal-path terrestrial imaging, addresses a need that is not …

Food, Fantasy, And The Spectacle: The Role Of Food And Illusion At The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, Erin T. Broemel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Each year over 300 million people visit theme parks, making them the major vacation destination worldwide. Theme parks are known for their elaborate spectacle, the creation of artificial realities through intricate immersive experiences including costumed characters, stage shows, and extravagant decor. Though many aspects of the theme park experience have been reviewed, little focus has been given to the role of food in the overall immersion, particularly how food extends the spectacle into a fantastical created reality. This study examined the function of food within a highly immersive theme park setting, and how it contributed to the overall illusion and …
Hippocampal Ca1 Activation During Object Memory Encoding In The Novel Object Recognition Task, David A. Cinalli
Hippocampal Ca1 Activation During Object Memory Encoding In The Novel Object Recognition Task, David A. Cinalli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Transcription and translation of proteins are required for the consolidation of episodic memory. Arc, an effector immediate early gene, has been linked to synaptic plasticity following learning and memory. It is well established that the rodent hippocampus is essential for processing spatial memory, but its role in processing object memory is a point of contention. Using immunohistochemical techniques, hippocampal sections were stained for arc proteins in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus in mice following two variations of the novel object recognition (NOR) task. Results suggest mice that acquired strong object memory showed significant hippocampal activation. In mice that …
Enhancement Of The Chemopreventive And Chemotherapeutic Effects Of Genistein And Beta-Lapachone In Human Prostate Cancer Cells By Pyroelectrically Generated Very Low Dose Ionizing Radiation, Saheed Oluwasina Oseni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
An estimated 220,800 new prostate cancer cases and 27,540 deaths are expected to occur in US men by the end of 2015. Despite the increased treatment modes for prostate cancer, there is still no definite cure, and prognosis remains, at best, cautiously optimistic. The explicit amalgamation of two or more cancer therapeutic modalities such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, has been one of the main interests of clinical investigation for several decades. Genistein (GN) and Beta-lapachone (BL) are two of the most promising anticancer phytochemical compounds. However, the anticancer activities of BL have been correlated with the enzyme activity of …
Does Public Service Ethics Education Include Gender Equity? An Exploration Of Gender Inclusion In Mpa Ethics Syllabi, Michelle D. Evans
Does Public Service Ethics Education Include Gender Equity? An Exploration Of Gender Inclusion In Mpa Ethics Syllabi, Michelle D. Evans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Public administration emphasizes the importance of diversity (Rice, 2004), representation (Selden & Selden, 2002), ethics, and professionalism, to ensure fairness and equity for all citizens (American Society for Public Administration, 2013a; Cooper, 2012). Research has shown a link between the teaching of ethics and values in leadership courses, and the establishment of consensus for espoused social norms and standards of practice (Begley & Stefkovich, 2007). Through the discourse within classrooms, and the scholarship of public administration, we create and advance the boundaries of social consensus in areas such as diversity (Hewins-Maroney & Williams, 2007; National Association of Schools of Public …

Growth Rates And Body Condition Of Juvenile Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Dry Tortugas National Park And Marine Protected Area, Nicole Reintsma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Dry Tortugas National Park (DRTO) consists of 261.8 km2 in the Gulf of Mexico and provides protection to marine species facing a multitude of threats. Among the many species that utilize DRTO is the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). I examined seven years of capture-recapture data to determine how the body condition (using Fulton’s equation, K = M/L3) and growth rate for juvenile green turtles vary within, and among size classes in DRTO, and how those rates compare to similar populations in other locations. Body conditions ranged from 0.77 to 1.71 (mean 1.3 SD ± 0.16). Growth rates ranged from …
How The Spatial Organization Of Objects Affects Perceptual Processing Of A Scene, Stacey Rashford
How The Spatial Organization Of Objects Affects Perceptual Processing Of A Scene, Stacey Rashford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
How does spatial organization of objects affect the perceptual processing of a scene? Surprisingly, little research has explored this topic. A few studies have reported that, when simple, homogenous stimuli (e.g., dots), are presented in a regular formation, they are judged to be more numerous than when presented in a random configuration (Ginsburg, 1976; 1978). However, these results may not apply to real-world objects. In the current study, fewer objects were believed to be on organized desks than their disorganized equivalents. Objects that are organized may be more likely to become integrated, due to classic Gestalt principles. Consequently, visual search …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The present study investigated the relation of children’s attentional behaviors to context, gender, and their language skills. Participants were 33 children and their parents. The following attentional behaviors were measured based on coding of video recordings of 30-minute free-play interactions at 30 months: time spent in engaged states (attending to an object, person, or event) and frequency of changes from one engagement state to another. Children’s productive vocabulary and language comprehension were measured using standardized tests at 30, 36, and 42 months. Males spent more time in joint engagement and switched engagement states less frequently. Children spent more time engaged …
The Role Of Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex In The Motor Control, Avisa Asemi
The Role Of Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex In The Motor Control, Avisa Asemi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
We sought to better understand human motor control by investigating functional interactions between the Supplementary Motor Area (SMA), dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex (dACC), and primary motor cortex (M1) in healthy adolescent participants performing visually coordinated unimanual finger-movement and n-back working memory tasks. We discovered modulation of the SMA by the dACC by analysis of fMRI BOLD time series recorded from the three ROIs (SMA, dACC, and M1) in each participant. Two measures of functional interaction were used: undirected functional connectivity was measured using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (PMCC), and directed functional connectivity was measured from linear autoregressive (AR) models. …
The Theological Roots And Historical Context Of J. S. Bach’S St. Matthew Passion, Bwv 244, Tennison Hubbard
The Theological Roots And Historical Context Of J. S. Bach’S St. Matthew Passion, Bwv 244, Tennison Hubbard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
History shows that Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a devout member of the Lutheran faith. Studying Bach’s life reveals that two sects of Lutheranism were the most influential to him, Orthodoxy and Pietism. A brief historical study of these two sects’ founders and their theology are presented in this document. All of Bach’s compositions are a reflection of his Christian beliefs but none is greater than his St. Matthew Passion. Although Bach is known to be a member of the Orthodox denomination, by observing the parallels between the beliefs of the two sects and the St. Matthew Passion, this document …
The Sonata Of Band Management, William Schmidt
The Sonata Of Band Management, William Schmidt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The Music Industry we knew 20 years ago has evolved into a completely different business. Major labels are scrambling to adapt to a new market created by digital streaming and the heavily dominated mobile environment. The purpose of this study is to explore the choice of remaining independent as a musician, and develop a systematic process that any aspiring artist or band manager can confidently follow to ensure their project has the best chance of success. Most of the published writings on this subject are either too broad, or too business-minded for the typical musician. This thesis provides a creative …
The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle
The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The dissertation is about the significance for, and impact upon public administration of the correspondence theory of truth or veridicality, and its underlying epistemological assumptions. The underlying thesis is that, unduly influenced by the success of the natural sciences, and naive in accepting their claims to objectivity, many disciplines have sought to emulate them. There are two principle objections. Firstly, all other considerations aside, the supposedly objectivistic methodologies apparently applied to the explanation and prediction of the behavior of interactions of physical objects, may simply be inappropriate to certain other areas of inquiry; and more specifically objectivist methodologies are indeed …
Mitochondrial Regulation Pathways In The Lens: Pink1/Parkin- And Bnip3l-Mediated Mechanisms, Kerem Aktan
Mitochondrial Regulation Pathways In The Lens: Pink1/Parkin- And Bnip3l-Mediated Mechanisms, Kerem Aktan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The mitochondrion is the powerhouse of the cell. Therefore, it is critical to the homeostasis of the cell that populations of mitochondria that are damaged or in excess are degraded. The process of targeted elimination of damaged or excess mitochondria by autophagy is called mitophagy. In this report, analysis of the mitophagy regulators PINK1/PARKIN and BNIP3L and their roles are assessed in the lens. PARKIN, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, has been shown to play a role in directing damaged mitochondria for degradation. While BNIP3L, an outer mitochondrial membrane protein, increases in expression in response to excess mitochondria and organelle degradation …
Optical 2d Positional Estimation For A Biomimetic Station-Keeping Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Christopher Nunes
Optical 2d Positional Estimation For A Biomimetic Station-Keeping Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Christopher Nunes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Underwater vehicles often use acoustics or dead reckoning for global positioning, which is impractical for low cost, high proximity applications. An optical based positional feedback system for a wave tank operated biomimetic station-keeping vehicle was made using an extended Kalman filter and a model of a nearby light source. After physical light model verification, the filter estimated surge, sway, and heading with 6 irradiance sensors and a low cost inertial measurement unit (~$15). Physical testing with video feedback suggests an average error of ~2cm in surge and sway, and ~3deg in yaw, over a 1200 cm2 operational area. This is …
The Effects Of Dichoptic And Isoluminant-Chromatic Stimuli On The Perception Of Object And Objectless Motion, Matthew S. Seifert
The Effects Of Dichoptic And Isoluminant-Chromatic Stimuli On The Perception Of Object And Objectless Motion, Matthew S. Seifert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Visual motion can be conveyed by a variety of information sources in the environment, and those types of information may be detected at various levels by different motion-perceiving mechanisms in the visual system. High-level visual information has been demonstrated to have 3rd order, or salience-based properties (Lu & Sperling, 1995). The perceptual system they describe that computes motion from these types of information shares several characteristics with Hock and colleagues' counterchange detection system, notably flexibility with respect to types of input from which motion can be computed, which comes at the cost of diminished processing speed. The mechanism of counterchange …
The Effects Of Toll-Like Receptor (Tlr) Agonists On Human Nicdc-Nk Mediated Memory/Effector T-Cell Development, Saba Tamjidi
The Effects Of Toll-Like Receptor (Tlr) Agonists On Human Nicdc-Nk Mediated Memory/Effector T-Cell Development, Saba Tamjidi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
There is compelling evidence that smokers are less responsive to vaccination. We reported that both therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines fail to protect and cure animals from disease due to negative effects of nicotine on DCs’ ability to generate effector T cells. We have been investigating whether vaccine formulated with TLR agonist(s) could potentially overcome the immunosuppressive effects of nicotine on human DC-NK cross-talk essential for effector T cell generation. Monocyte-derived DCs and nicDCs were stimulated with individual and combined TLR agonists prior to co-culture with purified T cells. The phenotypes and cytokine profiles of T cell were assessed using Flow …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
From October-December 2013, we conducted a study of the newly discovered primate species lesula, Cercopithecus lomamiensis, in the DR Congo. We placed 41 camera traps inside a 4 km2 grid outside the proposed Lomami National Park (LNP). We compared an analysis of 140 lesula events over 1,683 camera trap days from the heavily hunted Okulu area to a pilot study (38 events over 462 camera trap days) at the Losekola study site within the LNP. Our data show an unexpected result: capture probability of lesula (0.08) is the same at both the hunted and non-hunted sites. This is in contrast …
A Critical Analysis Of First Generation Black Male College Students’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For College Level Mathematics, Kyla L. Williams
A Critical Analysis Of First Generation Black Male College Students’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For College Level Mathematics, Kyla L. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
President Obama’s 2014 “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative responds to the continuing educational disparities that the No Child Left Behind Act was intended to have addressed. The preoccupation with standardized testing and accountability over the past decade has revealed evidence of disparities in achievement between Black male students and their White counterparts. Critical Race Theorists have framed these persistent disparities as evidence of the opportunity gap and have advocated culturally responsive pedagogy that would facilitate students’ academic success.

Bioinformatics Mining Of The Dark Matter Proteome For Cancer Targets Discovery, Ana Paula Delgado
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Mining the human genome for therapeutic target(s) discovery promises novel outcome. Over half of the proteins in the human genome however, remain uncharacterized. These proteins offer a potential for new target(s) discovery for diverse diseases. Additional targets for cancer diagnosis and therapy are urgently needed to help move away from the cytotoxic era to a targeted therapy approach. Bioinformatics and proteomics approaches can be used to characterize novel sequences in the genome database to infer putative function. The hypothesis that the amino acid motifs and proteins domains of the uncharacterized proteins can be used as a starting point to predict …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this study was to determine if resistance exercise altered peripheral BDNF concentration. Eighteen trained male subjects were split into two groups performing varied repetition ranges. DUP-HR and DUP-LR groups trained 3x/week for 8 weeks, and were equated for total volume (repetitions X sets X intensity). Plasma BDNF and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were measured prior to and immediately following the first exercise session of weeks 1, 2, 4 and 6. Pre-exercise levels were also assessed prior to the second and third sessions of week 1 and 6. Lastly, resting levels were measured before and after training intervention. No …
Cell-Surface Glycan-Lectin Interactions For Biomedical Applications, Benavente Maria Carolina Rodriguez
Cell-Surface Glycan-Lectin Interactions For Biomedical Applications, Benavente Maria Carolina Rodriguez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Carbohydrate recognition is one of the most sophisticated recognition processes in biological systems, mediating many important aspects of cell-cell recognition, such as inflammation, cell differentiation, and metastasis. Consequently, lectin-glycan interactions have been intensively studied in order to mimic their actions for potential bioanalytical and biomedical applications. Galectins, a class of ß-galactoside-specific animal lectins, have been strongly implicated in inflammation and cancer. Galectin-3 is involved in carbohydrate-mediated metastatic cell heterotypic and homotypic adhesion via interaction with Thomsen-Friedenreich (TF) antigen on cancer-associated MUC1. However, the precise mechanism by which galectin-3 recognizes TF antigen is poorly understood. Our thermodynamic studies have shown that …
An Empathetic Approach To Information Design, Frederick J. Mccawley
An Empathetic Approach To Information Design, Frederick J. Mccawley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis will explore the vital importance of empathy on the part of graphic designers when creating information graphics. Today’s over-mediated public expects a rich user experience that is emotionally engaging, and multi-sensory by nature. To meet the public’s need, graphic designers must accept the cognitive responsibility to be empathetic to the viewers’ relationship to the information, and not just the surface issues of form, media, and content.
Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Promotes Peripheral And Central Trigeminal Sensitization, Lauren Elise Cornelison
Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Promotes Peripheral And Central Trigeminal Sensitization, Lauren Elise Cornelison
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Temporomandibular joint disorder is characterized by peripheral and central sensitization of trigeminal nociceptive neurons. Although CGRP is implicated in the development of central sensitization by stimulating glial activation via its receptor, the mechanism by which CGRP promotes and maintains sensitization of trigeminal nociceptive neurons is not well understood. The goal of my study was to investigate the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on the initiation and maintenance of a nocifensive withdrawal response to mechanical stimulation following activation of primary trigeminal sensory neurons. For my studies, I used adult male Sprague Dawley rats that were injected with CGRP alone or …
The Effects Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen Fertilization On Tall Fescue Nutrient Content, Yield And Baleage Quality, Cheyenne Adele Arthur
The Effects Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen Fertilization On Tall Fescue Nutrient Content, Yield And Baleage Quality, Cheyenne Adele Arthur
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is a cool season perennial grass commonly used in year-round forage production systems. Producers often wrap large round bales of tall fescue in plastic. The fermented product of this practice, termed baleage, allows the forage to be stored for later feeding. During periods of rapid growth in the spring and the fall, the nutrient content of tall fescue can be imbalanced and cause nutritional disorders in grazing animals. To improve the nutrition of tall fescue, it is known that fertilization of phosphorus (P) can help improve leaf nutrient content of P, magnesium (Mg), and calcium …
