The application of bioremediation as a means to ameliorate potentially toxic metals from contaminated soils has been on the forefront of sustainable technologies in the field of environmental studies. Conventional methods available for soil remediation are employed in both in situ or ex situ and these are: soil flushing, solidification/stabilization, vitrification, electrokinetics, chemical reduction/oxidation, soil washing, and excavation. In general, these technologies are limited by their applicability to small areas and the high costs to execute. The use of biota, in particular fungi and trees, has been an emerging low-cost and "environmentally-friendly" alternative to conventional technologies. In this study, I …

Defining Cardiovascular Dysfunction In The Metabolic Syndrome: Therapeutic And Nutritional Approaches To Treatment, Sara Brooks Fournier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex disease state defined by the manifestation of a cluster of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors including, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia. Individuals afflicted with MetS have been demonstrated to assume the burden of a 3-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, myocardioal infarction, stroke, type II diabetes (T2DM) and all cause mortality. The national prevalence of hyperglycemia and abdominal obesity paralleled by a surge in sedentary lifestyle behavior underscore the importance of early identification and treatment of MetS. Deleterious adaptations to both vascular and myocardial structure and function have been demonstrated in MetS. …

This document chronicles, from the first read-through to the final curtain call, the process of diving into the role of Amanda Wingfield from Tennessee Williams' 'The Glass Menagerie'. It details my path toward character development (personalizing Amanda's point of view and drawing on others for inspiration), the rehearsal process, and ultimately how I couldn't help but be changed by the experience. The opportunity to play one of Tennessee Williams' most famous women brought with it a myriad of emotions at the start---from excitement (due to the fact that this was a dream come true for a thesis role)---to absolute incredulity …
The Effects Of Modest Improvement In Pellet Quality On Tom Turkey And Straight-Run Broiler Performance, With Focus On Experimental Design, Brian Gregory Glover
The Effects Of Modest Improvement In Pellet Quality On Tom Turkey And Straight-Run Broiler Performance, With Focus On Experimental Design, Brian Gregory Glover
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Improving the crumble/pellet percentage of feed has been argued to be difficult to obtain in the commercial industry due to the necessity of feed mills producing adequate feed volume within a time constraint. Poultry research often utilizes small numbers of birds per pen or experimental unit that may affect the estimation of variance components, potentially producing pen performance metrics that are less valuable for industry guidance. In Experiment 1, diets were manufactured to maintain nutrient availability and vary only in crumble/pellet percentage (standard = 40% pellets, improved = 70% pellets). The two dietary treatments were then fed to Hybrid Converter …
Assessing Feeder Space Access And Commercial Phytase Production Methods On Performance Of Commercial Broilers Fed Pelleted Diets, Mark Edward Lemons
Assessing Feeder Space Access And Commercial Phytase Production Methods On Performance Of Commercial Broilers Fed Pelleted Diets, Mark Edward Lemons
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Applied research conducted at universities is essential for further advancements in poultry science and ultimately the commercial poultry industry. One important area of applied nutrition research is examining production methods associated with the important feed additive/enzyme phytase. Exogenous phytase inclusion in poultry diets has consistently been associated with decreased diet cost, increased broiler performance, and reduction in negative environmental impact. However, thermal stability of commercial phytases are variable. Strategies for production of phytases that ultimately maintain activity after being subjected to the pelleting process is essential. Phytase manufacturers have modified production methods in an effort to maximize phytase thermal stability …

Ethnic Diplomacy: Race, The United States, And Mexico During World War Ii, Jordan Lieser
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation begins by framing the overall relationship between the United States and Mexico during World War II and recognizes the significant economic role Mexico played in the U.S. wartime industrialization. With this framework in place, the emphasis of this research then turns to how Mexico pressured the United States government into addressing the racial prejudice which existed within the United States against what was perceived as a unified Latin American ethnic group. Thanks to the increased importance of Mexico, multiple parts of the United States government including the State Department, the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, the …
The Role Of Arginase I In Ischemic Stroke And Cardiovascular Disease, Ashley Brooke Petrone
The Role Of Arginase I In Ischemic Stroke And Cardiovascular Disease, Ashley Brooke Petrone
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is currently the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. Further, the incidence of AIS is expected to increase dramatically through year 2030. Despite the current and anticipated burden of AIS, treatment options for AIS, both acute and chronic, are extremely limited. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is currently the only FDA-approved drug used to treat AIS; however, only a small fraction of AIS patients are eligible to receive tPA, and of these, only roughly 15 percent benefit from treatment with tPA. Given this, there is a crucial …
An Examination Of Households' Willingness-To-Pay For Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation In The United States: A Benefit Transfer Approach, Rajendra Prasad Poudel
An Examination Of Households' Willingness-To-Pay For Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation In The United States: A Benefit Transfer Approach, Rajendra Prasad Poudel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research paper provides a benefit transfer model of willingness-to-pay (WTP) for wetlands' biodiversity conservation in the United States. The validity of the estimated wetland's willingness-to-pay values is also examined. While valuation of the services provided by wetlands may be challenging due to their non-market nature, estimation of values is important. Conducting a primary study is the best option for precise results. However, researchers may recommend the benefit transfer approach in wetland valuation when there are limited time, budgetary constraints, and administrative urgency.;The benefit transfer approach involves transferring of value estimates from study sites (where research was already undertaken) to …

In the mid-nineteenth century, one of the most popular American magazine illustrators was David Hunter Strother, a native of Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). Using the pseudonym "Porte Crayon," Strother published semi-fictional accounts of his travels which he often illustrated as well as authored. The West Virginia & Regional History Center offers a digital collection of 730 of the artist's sketches and paintings. Additionally, the Walters Art Museum presents eight of Strother's sketches online. To provide a method for studying Strother's artworks, a database was created to show connections between the artist's works based on date, location, and thematic content. …
Kinematic Basis For Body Specific Locomotor Mechanics And Perturbation Responses, Ryan B. Ross
Kinematic Basis For Body Specific Locomotor Mechanics And Perturbation Responses, Ryan B. Ross
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Animals have evolved mechanical and neural strategies for locomotion in almost every environment, overcoming the complexities of their habitats using specializations in body structure and animal behavior. These specializations are created by neural networks responsible for generating and altering muscle activation. Species specific musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology determine how locomotion is controlled through the transformation of motor patterns into body movements. Furthermore, when these species specific locomotor systems encounter perturbations during running and walking their behavioral and mechanical attributes determine how stability is established during and after the perturbation. It is still not understood how species specific structural and behavioral …
Slavery, Agriculture, And Malaria In The Arabian Peninsula, Benjamin Reilly
Slavery, Agriculture, And Malaria In The Arabian Peninsula, Benjamin Reilly
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
In Slavery, Agriculture, and Malaria in the Arabian Peninsula, Benjamin Reilly illuminates a previously unstudied phenomenon: the large-scale employment of people of African ancestry as slaves in agricultural oases within the Arabian Peninsula. The key to understanding this unusual system, Reilly argues, is the prevalence of malaria within Arabian Peninsula oases and drainage basins, which rendered agricultural lands in Arabia extremely unhealthy for people without genetic or acquired resistance to malarial fevers. In this way, Arabian slave agriculture had unexpected similarities to slavery as practiced in the Caribbean and Brazil.
This book synthesizes for the first time a body of …
The Story Of Swahili, John M. Mugane
The Story Of Swahili, John M. Mugane
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Swahili was once an obscure dialect of an East African Bantu language. Today more than one hundred million people use it: Swahili is to eastern and central Africa what English is to the world. From its embrace in the 1960s by the black freedom movement in the United States to its adoption in 2004 as the African Union’s official language, Swahili has become a truly international language. How this came about and why, of all African languages, it happened only to Swahili is the story that John M. Mugane sets out to explore.
The remarkable adaptability of Swahili has allowed …

Tradition, Policy And The Establishment Clause: Justice Kennedy's Opinion In Town Of Greece V. Galloway, Wilson Huhn
Con Law Center Articles and Publications
The great jurisprudential battle that has raged in the Supreme Court for more than a century and the question that our society has struggled with since the advent of the Civil War is whether the Constitution is a command by our ancestors that we retain the same political structures, social hierarchies, and cultural traditions that they had, or whether it reflects ideals of liberty, equality, fairness, and tolerance that they aspired to and that they expected us to reach for. That struggle between rules and standards, doctrine and principles, conventionalism and consequentialism, tradition and policy in the interpretation of the …

Analyses Of Volatiles Produced By The African Fruit Fly Species Complex (Diptera, Tephritidae), Radka Břízová, Lucie Vaníčková, Mária Faťarová, Sunday Ekesi, Michal Hoskovec, Blanka Kalinová
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Ceratitis fasciventris, Ceratitis anonae and Ceratitis rosa are polyphagous agricultural pests originating from the African continent. The taxonomy of this group (the so-called Ceratitis FAR complex) is unclear. To clarify the taxonomic relationships, male and female-produced volatiles presumably involved in pre-mating communication were studied using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) followed by multivariate analysis, and gas chromatography combined with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD). GC×GC-TOFMS analyses revealed sex specific differences in produced volatiles. Male volatiles are complex mixtures that differ both qualitatively and quantitatively but share some common compounds. GC-EAD analyses of male volatiles revealed that the antennal …

The cuticular hydrocarbons (CHs) and morphology of two Ceratitis rosa Karsch (Diptera: Tephritidae) populations, putatively belonging to two cryptic taxa, were analysed. The chemical profiles were characterised by two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. CHs of C. rosa that originated from the lowlands and highlands of Kenya comprised of n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes and unsaturated hydrocarbons in the range of the carbon backbone from C14 to C37. Hydrocarbons containing C29, C31, C33 and C35 carbon atoms predominated in these two populations. 2-Methyltriacontane was the predominant compound in both populations. Quantitative differences in the distribution of hydrocarbons of different chain lengths, …
The Fourth Social Change Wave: Mastery Or Misery?, Raymond L. Forbes
The Fourth Social Change Wave: Mastery Or Misery?, Raymond L. Forbes
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
One of the great values of social science has been its ability to identify and interpret useful themes and patterns that have shaped historical human behavior. In particular, understanding broad patterns of strategic social and technological change offers the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the present and provide potentially practical guidance for the future. This paper advances the concept of social waves of change, originally presented by futurist Alvin Toffler, as a frame work to think about what is now and what might be coming. It also provides several visions for a changed world, explores what it all might …

This newly developed PRQ was utilized into prior research to predict the levels of adjustment in children. It includes age, whether the child has been informed of the diagnosis, whether the child engages in age-appropriate activities, the child's prior experience with death, the child's family's involvement in treatment, …
Two Models Of Unpatentable Subject Matter, Alan L. Durham
Two Models Of Unpatentable Subject Matter, Alan L. Durham
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
Patentable subject matter has become one of the most controversial areas of patent law. Efforts to articulate a lucid and productive theory of patentable subject matter must acknowledge that there are two competing models of unpatentable subject matter. One posits that natural laws, natural phenomena, and abstract ideas are themselves ineligible for patenting, and that each example of a natural law, natural phenomenon, or abstract idea further defines a class of inventions that cannot be patented because they lack an additional element of ingenuity—or “inventive concept”—that sufficiently distinguishes those inventions from their natural counterparts. This “penumbral” model of unpatentable subject …
Phylogenetic Analysis Of Mitochondrial Genomes Of Filarial Nematodes In The Subfamily Waltonellinae, Sarina Marie Bauer
Phylogenetic Analysis Of Mitochondrial Genomes Of Filarial Nematodes In The Subfamily Waltonellinae, Sarina Marie Bauer
Theses and Dissertations
The family Onchocercidae is a group of parasitic vector born nematodes that are split up into eight subfamilies. Although the subfamilies containing species that parasitize humans and livestock (e.g., Onchocercinae) have been well-studied, there is a considerable lack of information for the lesser studied subfamilies in Onchocercidae (e.g. Waltonellinae). This uncertainty leaves some doubt as to the phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships among the different taxonomic groupings of filarioid nematodes.
I worked with two species of the subfamily Waltonellinae, Foleyellides n. sp. and F. flexicauda. The primers used in this study for polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and DNA sequencing reactions were …
Refining Transformation Rules For Converting Uml Operations To Z Schema, Tamaike Brown
Refining Transformation Rules For Converting Uml Operations To Z Schema, Tamaike Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The UML (Unified Modeling Language) has its origin in mainstream software engineering and is often used informally by software designers. One of the limitations of UML is the lack of precision in its semantics, which makes its application to safety critical systems unsuitable. A safety critical system is one in which any loss or misinterpretation of data could lead to injury, loss of human lives and/or property. Safety Critical systems are usually specified by very precisely and frequently required formal verification. With the continuous use of UML in the software industry, there is a need to augment the informality of …

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Wing Color Pattern Development In Vanessa Cardui And Evolution Of The Polycomb Repressive Complex 2, Heidi Connahs
Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Wing Color Pattern Development In Vanessa Cardui And Evolution Of The Polycomb Repressive Complex 2, Heidi Connahs
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I present four papers. Three explore different aspects of wing color pattern development in the painted lady butterfly, Vanessa cardui; while the fourth examines the evolution of an epigenetic silencer complex across invertebrate animals. In the first paper, I used transcriptomics to identify patterning genes from the Drosophila wing gene regulatory network (GRN) in larval and pupal wings of V. cardui and to examine how temporal expression dynamics of this gene network correspond to expression of ommochrome and melanin pigment genes. This study identified key developmental periods of gene upregulation and highlights the temporal separation between peak …

There is a need to identify and discuss community college student perceptions of online education as a window to an array of challenges that these institutions face. Student perspectives can confirm, or disconfirm, the impressions and accounts of other community college stakeholders and decision makers.
The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive review of the literature from 1995-2015 that answered the primary research question, "What are the student perceptions of online education at community colleges in the United States?" Extensive strategies were used to locate information for review. Analysis of the literature yielded a framework for formulating …
Parasites Within Parasites: Transmission And Evolution Of Neorickettsia In Digeneans, Stephen Edward Greiman
Parasites Within Parasites: Transmission And Evolution Of Neorickettsia In Digeneans, Stephen Edward Greiman
Theses and Dissertations
Digeneans are endoparasitic flatworms with complex life cycles that involve two or more different animals as definitive and intermediate hosts. Some digenean species harbor bacterial endosymbionts belonging to the genus Neorickettsia (Order: Rickettsiales, Family: Anaplasmataceae). Neorickettsia occur in all life cycle stages of digeneans and are maintained by vertical transmission. Far from benign however, Neorickettsia may also be transmitted horizontally by digenean parasites to their vertebrate definitive hosts. Once inside, Neorickettsia can infect macrophages and other cell types. For some vertebrate species (e.g. dogs, horses and humans), neorickettsial infections cause severe disease. With a few exceptions, studies of Neorickettsia have …
