Genus Varecia : Anatomy, Morphology, And Pathology, Elise R. Orellana
Genus Varecia : Anatomy, Morphology, And Pathology, Elise R. Orellana
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
An anatomical normal was established for the forelimb and hindlimb of the Genus Varecia through observation of skeletal remains and a detailed dissection of the musculature of a black and white ruffed lemur, Varecia variegata. This was used as a healthy state for comparison with a red ruffed lemur, Varecia rubra, displaying a periosteal disease affecting the long bones. This disease presented as large lesions growing along the diaphyses and epiphyses of the ulna, radius, tibia and fibula as well as on the carpals, metacarpals, tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges. Dissection showed that these lesions avoided the points of origin and …
Innovative Approaches With Ocular Photochemistry : From Non-Invasive Diagnostic Tools To Drug Delivery, Devi Kalyan Karumanchi
Innovative Approaches With Ocular Photochemistry : From Non-Invasive Diagnostic Tools To Drug Delivery, Devi Kalyan Karumanchi
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Diabetes mellitus is an endocrinal metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels which gives rise to complications in various organs of the body. Formation of advanced glycation endproducts is universally considered a biomarker for diabetes. Currently, there are several methods used for the diagnosis of diabetes - A1C, FPG and OGT tests. These methods are based on screening the glycation of hemoglobin. Although, these tests give accurate results in diabetic patients, they have their exceptions. One major disadvantage of measuring blood sugar levels is the hemoglobin turnover, which is faster in case of diabetics and hence is a major …
Evolutionary And Structural Analyses Of Plant Cell Wall Synthesis-Related Glycosyltransferase Family 43 And 2, Rahil Taujale
Evolutionary And Structural Analyses Of Plant Cell Wall Synthesis-Related Glycosyltransferase Family 43 And 2, Rahil Taujale
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Plant cell wall polysaccharides have been a focus of research for many years mainly due to their potential as a lignocellulosic biofuel resource. An approach to realize this resource is genetically designing plants that are ideal for biofuel production. This requires manipulation of the enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of these polysaccharides. With an aim to improve the understanding of plant cell wall-related enzymes, this study documents a detailed evolutionary analysis and protein structural analyses focusing on two main families of glycosyltransferases as two separate chapters: GT43 involved in xylan backbone elongation and GT2 responsible for cellulose and …
La Contra-Hegemonia Como Tactica Cultural En Dos Obras Teatrales De Paloma Pedrero, Jeffrey Bainbridge
La Contra-Hegemonia Como Tactica Cultural En Dos Obras Teatrales De Paloma Pedrero, Jeffrey Bainbridge
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the relationship between Paloma Pedrero's plays, Esta noche en el parque and De noche a alba, as they explore the evolution of gender roles in a post Franco Spain. After the death of General Franco Spain launched into a transition to democracy. In its wake, as the balance of power transformed the body politic, the traditional gender roles were in equal upheaval and redefinition. With selected theoretical references to Antonio Gramsci and Michel Foucault, this thesis explores how Pedrero's works hone in on the nucleus of these renegotiations placing the interpersonal nature of the relationship under the …
Linkages Between Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (Cafo) Expansion And County Board Politics In Rural Illinois, Eric A. Sterling
Linkages Between Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (Cafo) Expansion And County Board Politics In Rural Illinois, Eric A. Sterling
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are rapidly expanding in rural Illinois. This research explores the political power linkages between county boards and corporate entities in four Illinois counties. The hypothesis is that collusion and impropriety within county board politics and CAFO expansion in rural Illinois are attributed to stakeholder influence and power at the local county government level. My research revealed a connection between ownership of CAFOs, county board political power, and endorsement of expansion. Utilizing Walter Goldschmidt's method of a controlled comparison, the research analyzes two CAFO inundated counties (Pike and Adams) with two less affected counties (LaSalle and …
Maternal Anxiety And Infant Fear : Indirect Links Through Parenting Behaviors, Erin Shishilla Edwards
Maternal Anxiety And Infant Fear : Indirect Links Through Parenting Behaviors, Erin Shishilla Edwards
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Previous work has demonstrated links between early fearful temperament and risk for the subsequent development of anxiety disorders; thus, factors that may influence the development of early fear are important to consider. Maternal anxiety has previously been linked to child anxiety, though limited work has examined potential relationships between maternal anxiety and infant fear. Anxious mothers have been observed to be more critical/rejecting and intrusive/overcontrolling in their interactions with their children, and these parenting behaviors have been related to greater risk for childhood anxiety. Again, the relations between these parenting behaviors and early expressions of temperament, particularly fear, are less …
Numerical And Experimental Study Of Bauschinger Effect On Aa5182 Sheets, Abhinav Talla
Numerical And Experimental Study Of Bauschinger Effect On Aa5182 Sheets, Abhinav Talla
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
For stamping process, most of the sheet metal elements undergo a complicated deformation process that may comprise a sequence of stretching, bending, unbending and reverse bending processes. For this kind of deformation, the Bauschinger effect must be considered in order to calculate the internal stress within the parts before springback. To understand the Bauschinger effect phenomenon on AA5182-O temper, a fixture for cyclic double-shear test has been designed and manufactured. This test can induce cyclic shear loading on the specimen during experiment. LS-Dyna has also been used to simulate this experiment.
Poetry As Rhetorical Deliberation In The Work Of Mary Oliver : The Necessity To Actively Observe, Jennifer Altman
Poetry As Rhetorical Deliberation In The Work Of Mary Oliver : The Necessity To Actively Observe, Jennifer Altman
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This master's thesis examines the poetry of Mary Oliver in the light of rhetorical deliberation as sketched out by Bryan Garsten. Oliver's work exemplifies what a private, instead of public, deliberative process could look like. The methodology used is that set forth by Jacqueline Jones Royster and Gesa E. Kirsch whose feminist approach uses four different deliberative strategies---globalization, social circulation, strategic contemplation, and critical imagination---that encourage looking at women's work as broadly as possible. Applied together to Oliver's work, Garsten's theory of rhetorical deliberation and Royster and Kirsch's methodology reveal that Oliver's poetry encourages readers to engage in close observations …

Geog 140: Introduction To Human Geography—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Inquiry Portfolio, Katherine Nashleanas
Geog 140: Introduction To Human Geography—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Inquiry Portfolio, Katherine Nashleanas
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
Large lecture classes of 100 students or more present unique challenges to both teaching and learning. The common method of “delivery” by instructors is lecture, often augmented by a set of Power Point slides; and, while the research literature shows that this is the more traditional way of teaching, increasingly it is becoming apparent that this method of instruction often does not reach students in the way we hope and often assume (Harvard Magazine 2015). Most of the students populating these classes are born of the Digital Age and have different expectations for learning, requiring new approaches in the classroom …

Span 202: Intermediate Spanish Ii (Focus On Literature & Culture)—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Kelly Kingsbury Brunetto
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
During Spring 2015 I undertook a curricular revision of UNL's fourth-semester Spanish course (SPAN202) with the objective of improving the materials to help the course better achieve its stated goal of moving students "away from knowledge about the language and expertise in using isolated skills into a practical and fluid use of the language in which [they] synthesize [their] isolated skills." As it existed at the time, in theory SPAN202 focuses on synthesis and helping students negotiate higher levels of discourse, but in practice it tended to get bogged down in a comprehensive grammar review. In reality, some grammar topics …
Teac 315: Teaching Science In The Elementary School—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Krista Adams
Teac 315: Teaching Science In The Elementary School—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Krista Adams
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
Teaching Science in the Elementary School (TEAC 315) is an upper-division course taken by elementary education majors as a requirement for the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Education. The peer review of teaching project had me identify concerns for teaching the elementary methods course. The concerns I wanted to address focused on eliciting teacher candidate’s views and experiences with teaching science as well as my ability to identify evidence of growth. The first area focuses on my needing to understand if I need to develop more instructional strategies to support teacher candidate growth. This involves both in terms of specific …
The History, Status, And Future Of Tribal Self-Governance Under The Indian Self-Determination And Education Assistance Act, Geoffrey D. Strommer, Stephen D. Osborne
The History, Status, And Future Of Tribal Self-Governance Under The Indian Self-Determination And Education Assistance Act, Geoffrey D. Strommer, Stephen D. Osborne
American Indian Law Review
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 (ISDEAA), a cornerstone of modern federal Indian policy. In 1988, amendments to the ISDEAA created the Tribal Self-Governance Demonstration Project. By providing a statutory basis for the broader movement of tribal self-governance, this legislation recognized and advanced the proposition that Indian tribes can provide better governmental services to their own members than can distant federal bureaucracies. Expanded and refined in subsequent legislation in 1994 and 2000, the Self-Governance Policy has proven so successful that today over 50% of all federal Indian programs are carried …

Rolling Back The Luck Problem For Libertarianism, Zac Cogley
Rolling Back The Luck Problem For Libertarianism, Zac Cogley
Journal Articles
I here sketch a reply to Peter van Inwagen’s Rollback Argument, which suggests that libertarian accounts of free agency are beset by problems involving luck. Van Inwagen imagines an indeterministic agent whose universe is repeatedly ‘rolled back’ by God to the time of her choice. Since the agent’s choice is indeterministic, her choices are sometimes different in the imaginary rollback scenarios. I show that although this is true, this need not impair her control over what she does. I develop an account of when and why the fact that an agent would choose differently impairs control, which provides a novel …
Bridging The Blue-Green Divide: The Role Of Environmental Ngos In Tackling Environmental Problems In Taiwan, Yttrium Sua
Bridging The Blue-Green Divide: The Role Of Environmental Ngos In Tackling Environmental Problems In Taiwan, Yttrium Sua
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis attempts to provide a brief historical outline of the environmental movement in Taiwan and the unique political situation that has directly affected how the movement has progressed. Thereafter, it looks at some examples of environmental disputes that have occurred in recent years, paying special attention to the ways the environmental movement has interacted with the government. This provides the background to frame the analysis, which will shed light on the reasons for the current state of distrust and antagonistic interactions between the environmental movement and the government. Finally, the thesis evaluates whether such interactions with the government is …
Reforestation, Renewal, And The Cost Of Coal: Opposing A Manichean Worldview In Central Appalachia, Elizabeth R. Hansen
Reforestation, Renewal, And The Cost Of Coal: Opposing A Manichean Worldview In Central Appalachia, Elizabeth R. Hansen
Pomona Senior Theses
Surface coal mining is a major form of land change and environmental degradation in Central Appalachia. Traditional mine reclamation iresults in unmanaged, unproductive grasslands that fail to mitigate many of the environmental costs of coal mining and are of minimal use to communities. Forestry reclamation is an alternative reclamation tactic that has the potential to address both environmental and socioeconomic concerns in Central Appalachia. A case study of Laurel Fork Mine in Eastern Kentucky is included.
Discovery Islands, Earth Islands: The Theory And Practice Of Island Imagery In Environmental Thought, Naomi A. Bosch
Discovery Islands, Earth Islands: The Theory And Practice Of Island Imagery In Environmental Thought, Naomi A. Bosch
Pomona Senior Theses
Earth Island is a core metaphor of activist thought often applied in Environmental Analysis and related fields as a tool for thinking about the planet’s limited resources. It puts forth the claim that if only we thought of the earth as more like an island, we would better understand our connectivity to other living things and be drawn to develop better and more extensive practices of environmental stewardship. This thesis uses personal accounts of environmental life philosophies and political practices collected from residents of the Discovery Islands in British Columbia as a site for analytical comparison between the theory and …

"A Picture Terrible In Its Significance": Jack Johnson, Interracial Relationships, And Methods Of White Social Control In Early Twentieth-Century America, Aimee M. Duchsherer
Theses and Dissertations
In early twentieth-century America, white society used white female purity, psychological and racial pressures, and intense physical violence as methods by which to control the sexual behavior of black men and white women. An exploration of the case study of African American boxer Jack Johnson reveals the use of these tools in the public response to his relationships with three white women: Belle Schreiber, Etta Duryea, and Lucille Cameron. As Johnson challenged white men in the boxing ring, he further challenged their supposed racial superiority through his blatant, public sexual relationships with and marriages to white women. Using legal documents …
The Relationship Between Interrogative Suggestibility And Decision-Making, Darci Van Dyke
The Relationship Between Interrogative Suggestibility And Decision-Making, Darci Van Dyke
Theses and Dissertations
Interrogative suggestibility is the individual's tendency to yield to misleading questions and negative feedback. Individuals who exhibit this tendency have been found to be more likely to falsely confess to a crime, a decision with often severe negative consequences. Many individual differences in cognition, emotion, and personality have been linked with interrogative suggestibility. These individual differences have also been found to be related to an individual's decision-making ability. However, the relationship between interrogative suggestibility and decision-making has not been investigated. The current project sought to determine how decision-making abilities, cognitive ability, memory, and anxiety predict variability in interrogative suggestibility. Results …
Civil-Izing Federalism, Brooke Coleman
Civil-Izing Federalism, Brooke Coleman
Faculty Articles
When Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito joined the United States Supreme Court, most commentators predicted it would become more conservative. Indeed, many believed that the reinvigorated federalism revolution under Chief Justice Rehnquist would, if anything, become more robust under the new chief. To a large degree, those commentators were right; the Court has decided numerous hotly contested federalism cases along predictable ideological lines. But there are some important counterexamples in the Court’s federalism jurisprudence. In a list of cases about access to plaintiff-friendly state courts, the Justices seem to abandon their federalism principles. Instead, the liberal wing of the …
Precarious Existence And Capitalism: A Permanent State Of Exception, Tayyab Mahmud
Precarious Existence And Capitalism: A Permanent State Of Exception, Tayyab Mahmud
Faculty Articles
The contemporary neoliberal era is marked by an exponential expansion of contingent and precarious labor markets. In this context, the construct of precarity emerged to signify labor conditions of permanent insecurity and precariousness. Coming at the heels of the era of Keynesian welfare, precarity is mostly seen as an exception to the normal trajectory of capitalist formations. The basic argument of this paper is that under capitalism, for the working classes precarious existence is the norm rather than the exception. Precarity is the outcome not only of insecurities of labor markets but also of capital’s capture and colonization of life …
Toward A Clinical Pedagogy Of Externship, Elizabeth Ford
Toward A Clinical Pedagogy Of Externship, Elizabeth Ford
Faculty Articles
Externships offer a tantalizing experiential option for law schools. Students are hungry for the real-world experience, the networking potential, and the chance to take the skills they have learned in the classroom to the next level. Administrators love externships because of their high enrollment, low cost nature: externships leverage small amounts of resources from hundreds of outside organizations. Faculty appreciate these programs because they provide students with context and skills, inspire them in the doctrinal classroom, and require little diversion of resources from the more traditional faculty ranks. However, the danger of grasping too tightly to externships as the experiential …
The Forging Of Modern Broadway Sound Design Techniques Amid The Fires Of The Rock Musicals In The Late 1960s And 1970s., Timothy Tracey
The Forging Of Modern Broadway Sound Design Techniques Amid The Fires Of The Rock Musicals In The Late 1960s And 1970s., Timothy Tracey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From the ancient Greek theater, through the dawn of the Renaissance, beyond the development of Shakespearean theater, to the Broadway theater boon in the 1920s, sound reinforcement within the theater remained virtually unchanged. Through Broadway's Golden Age, directors and producers relied on architectural acoustics to carry sound throughout the theaters. This is not surprising given that most of the theaters were built in the early 1900s, before the invention of any electric sound reinforcement technology. Moreover, early attempts at amplification in the 1940s yielded dismal results. Eventually, the maturation of the integrated book musical and the invasion of the rock …
The Branding, Creation, And Promotion Of A Solo Comedienne, Anna Mccorison
The Branding, Creation, And Promotion Of A Solo Comedienne, Anna Mccorison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Comedy exists as a stronghold in American culture as a coping mechanism throughout history, but is often limited to the male headliner. From Charlie Chaplin to Jackie Gleason and Bill Cosby to Will Ferrell, men have kept us laughing from stages to screen throughout the last century. Thus, I inquire: who are the prominent women who rose to the top of this male-dominated industry and how did they create a brand for themselves that was distinguishable and celebrated? What is it about being a woman in the last century that made making a name in comedic entertainment more cumbersome, and …
Connections Between Voice And Design In Puppetry: A Case-Study, Ryan Skiles
Connections Between Voice And Design In Puppetry: A Case-Study, Ryan Skiles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Puppets have been entertaining, educating, and mesmerizing American audiences since the birth of our nation. Both in live theatrical events and TV/film, audiences have watched puppeteers bring their puppet characters to life with clever voice quality choices, unique characterizations, and vivid visual designs. This thesis is a case study that first borrows insight from cartoon character designers, animators, and voiceover actors to provide considerations for voice quality choices, characterizations, and design elements when creating a new puppet character. It then investigates the connections that exist between those three elements once a puppet is fully realized. In order to identify these …
Providing Cultural Balance For Young Americans, Mark Nichols
Providing Cultural Balance For Young Americans, Mark Nichols
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Children today are increasingly being introduced to tablets and other personal electronic devices at very young ages. Due in part to this, the entertainment industry now has a near ubiquitous presence in America compared to cultural arts. Its influence on the development of children is almost impossible to ignore. My thesis will study an approach to engaging young people by way of location-based projects that synthesize two or more art forms (e.g. theatre arts, literary arts, visual arts) in order to provide a unified effort for cultural arts and also provide balance to the influences of entertainment. Incorporating research, interviews …

The Artistry Of Accessibility: Creating Theatre With And For Students On The Autism Spectrum, Sara Brunow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Theatre is a place where all can come together and have an experience regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or ability. As a theatre maker and teaching artist, how do I create inclusion and augment social awareness by designing and implementing theatrical experiences for a specific audience? In this personal exploration of inclusive theatre practices (Sensory Friendly Theatre, Inclusive Arts Integration, and Multi-Sensory Theatre) I will examine my experience of creating and adapting theatre with and for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. My process has a three-pronged approach: adapting an established production using a Sensory Friendly model; adapting an arts integration …
Folate Conjugated Hyperbranched Polyester Nanoparticles For Prostate Tumor-Targeted Delivery Of A Cytotoxic Peptide Via Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen, Orielyz Flores-Fernandez
Folate Conjugated Hyperbranched Polyester Nanoparticles For Prostate Tumor-Targeted Delivery Of A Cytotoxic Peptide Via Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen, Orielyz Flores-Fernandez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prostate Cancer is the second most deadly cancer in men, after lung cancer. The need for new and effective therapeutics that can constrain prostate cancer progression are challenged by the lack of suitable delivery strategies that target prostate cancer tissue. To study CT20p as potential chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of prostate cancer we proposed the use of targetable hyperbranched polyester (HBPE) based nanoparticles as delivery system. Folic acid was conjugated to the nanocarrier to improve the selectivity of the nanoparticle towards specific cell surface targets in prostate cancer cell lines. Specifically we evaluated LNCaP that up-regulated the PSMA receptor. …
