There is also an introduction to homeostasis at the beginning.

Speech-Language Pathologists' Input To Toddlers In Early Intervention: A Pilot Study, Tanya Jean Willey Jan 2015

Speech-Language Pathologists' Input To Toddlers In Early Intervention: A Pilot Study, Tanya Jean Willey

Master's Theses and Capstones

Caregivers interacting with young children in natural settings have been found to provide language input that is in tune with the child's output in terms of mean length of utterance (MLU). Previous research suggests that caregivers provide language input within the child's proximal zone of language development, that is 2.0-3.0 morphemes ahead of their child's MLU. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate whether speech-language pathologists (SLP) working in early intervention tailor their input in the same way.

Communication interactions between six speech-language pathologists and their toddler aged clients between the ages of 28 and 33 months were …

Space Use And Habitat Affinities Of The Singing Vole On The Northern Foothills Of The Brooks Range, Alaska, Andrew Maguire Jan 2015

Space Use And Habitat Affinities Of The Singing Vole On The Northern Foothills Of The Brooks Range, Alaska, Andrew Maguire

Master's Theses and Capstones

Arctic tundra is being affected by a rapidly warming climate, which is accompanied by shifts in plant community composition and structure. Shrub expansion, a predominant consequence of this warming, is linked with changes in nutrient cycling and has direct implications to global change biology. Habitats are being altered across the landscape, with subsequent changes to arctic faunal communities. While herbivory has been noted as important in contributing to plant community composition in the arctic, with the potential to both exacerbate and mitigate shifts toward shrub-dominated tundra landscapes, little research has been conducted on herbivore dynamics. Microtine rodents (i.e., voles and …

Establishment Of The Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle, Harmonia Axyridis, As A Model System For The Evolution Of Phenotypic Variation, Lindsay Havens Jan 2015

Establishment Of The Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle, Harmonia Axyridis, As A Model System For The Evolution Of Phenotypic Variation, Lindsay Havens

Master's Theses and Capstones

The mechanisms behind the evolution and maintenance of striking visual phenotypes are as varied as the species that display these phenotypes. Multiple study systems have been well characterized and provide critical information about the evolution of these traits. However, new study systems in which the phenotype of interest can be easily manipulated and quantified are essential to answer many questions about the functionality of core evolutionary processes. One such model is elytral spot number of the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Chapter 1). I describe Harmonia axyridis as a potential novel model species for examining extreme phenotypic evolution. To …

Ang Konsepto Ng Planetisasyon Ni Teilhard De Chardin: Isang Pagsusumubok Bigkasin Ang Meron, Wilhelm Patrick Joseph S. Strebel

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

In his book Pambungad sa Metapisika, Roque J. Ferriols, SJ, stresses that metaphysics is a practicum. Metaphysics makes one aware of reality, and this awareness drives the person to affirm, respect, and work and move in accord to and within it. This response to reality is what Ferriols calls “pagbigkas sa meron.” Ferriols also devotes a chapter of his book to the thought of the French paleontologist, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ. The paper explores how this understanding of Teilhard’s thought leads to the practicum identified above as “pagbigkas sa meron.” The paper begins with an exposition of the key …

Glutamatergic Neurotransmission In The Prefrontal Cortex Mediates The Suppressive Effect Of Intra-Pfc Infusion Of Bdnf On Cocaine-Seeking, Bok Soon Go Jan 2015

Glutamatergic Neurotransmission In The Prefrontal Cortex Mediates The Suppressive Effect Of Intra-Pfc Infusion Of Bdnf On Cocaine-Seeking, Bok Soon Go

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Infusion of BDNF into the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) immediately after the last session of cocaine self-administration prevents cocaine-mediated malfunction of synaptic modulation in the dmPFC that mediates relapse to cocaine-seeking through both GluN2A subunit-containing NMDA receptors and GluN2B subunit-containing NMDA receptors (NMDARS). Intra-dmPFC BDNF is known to suppress cocaine-seeking by normalization of cocaine self-administration- induced disturbance of glutamatergic transmission in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and by prevention of the cocaine self-administration-induced decrease in extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activity in the dmPFC through activation of tyrosine receptor kinase B (TrkB). Neuronal activity is required for BDNF-induced ERK activation and the …

Protecting Medical Marijuana Users In The Workplace, Kathleen Harvey

Case Western Reserve Law Review

Part I of this Note gives a brief history of marijuana regulation in the United States. Part II describes how drug testing works and why employers do it. And it presents some of the issues that the federal prohibition poses for employers and employees. Part III analyzes state court opinions that have addressed the question of whether employers may fire employees for off-site medical marijuana use that does not impair work performance. Every court thus far has ruled in favor of the employer, but some of the opinions and dissents acknowledge that the legislatures could amend their states’ statutes to …

Part I provides an overview of the guidance document, …

Gene Expression In The Choanoderm, Jesús Federico Peña Jan 2015

Gene Expression In The Choanoderm, Jesús Federico Peña

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The body plan of sponges (phylum Porifera) is an outlier among modern animals and is thought to have special evolutionary significance. Sponges lack muscles, nerves and a gut. Instead, they are composed of few cell types and simple tissues that function to pump water through an internal canal network where bacterial prey are filtered by a specialized tissue called the choanoderm. The choanoderm is composed of cells with striking similarity to choanoflagellates, the unicellular relatives of animals. Thus, the traditional view is that the sponge choanoderm is a useful model of the first animal epithelial tissues. Using the freshwater sponge …

Transcending Thresholds: A Phenomenological Study Of How African American Women Working In The Federal Government Experience Professional Development, Betsy A. Kelly Bell Jan 2015

Transcending Thresholds: A Phenomenological Study Of How African American Women Working In The Federal Government Experience Professional Development, Betsy A. Kelly Bell

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the professional development experiences of federally employed African American women and to discover whether and how they perceive race and gender as informing their professional development. The researcher used an existential phenomenological approach, guided by the following research questions: what are the professional development experiences of African American women working in the federal government?; what, if any, challenges to professional development have been experienced by this population, and what meaning do they find in those experiences?; and what are the perceptions of this population regarding how social-organizational constructs inform their professional …

The Effects Of Invasive Earthworm Species On Salamanders In The Grand Valley State University Ravine Ecosystem, Hunter J. Brunges, James Dunn Jan 2015

The Effects Of Invasive Earthworm Species On Salamanders In The Grand Valley State University Ravine Ecosystem, Hunter J. Brunges, James Dunn

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Earthworms are an invasive species that are causing ecological damage to northern forest ecosystems. The disruption to soil nutrient cycling and litter decomposition can negatively impact organisms that live within the leaf litter, such as salamanders. To test this hypothesis, we sampled earthworms within three ravines at thirty-six sites using the mustard extraction method. We surveyed salamander populations on two dates in 2015 at each site using cover boards. We also collected data on slope aspect, altitude, soil moisture, leaf litter coverage, canopy cover, and coarse woody debris at each site to determine their effects on earthworm and salamander populations. …

A Comparison Of American Marten Habitat Use From Data Collected Using Vhf Radio Telemetry Versus Gps Telemetry, Macy Doster, Paul Keenlance, Joseph Jacquot

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

The American marten (Martes americana) is a small carnivorous forest mammal with a long, slender body found throughout northern North America. Our study focused on home range size and habitat use of individuals in the Manistee National Forest in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Marten home range sizes vary from animal to animal, as population density, climate, and food availability are all factors to consider (Smith et al. 2002). Our understanding of wildlife habitat use and selection, and therefore our efforts to create or manage suitable habitat are based almost exclusively on research conducted using very high frequency (VHF)-based radio telemetry. We …

This research explored some effects of a two-year initiative to integrate digital literacy in a suburban public elementary school. For a period of six months, …

Bridging The Soft-Skill Gap From Education To Employment Through Internships, Kim Stack Washor Jan 2015

Bridging The Soft-Skill Gap From Education To Employment Through Internships, Kim Stack Washor

Open Access Dissertations

Employers express a growing concern that recent college graduates do not possess the necessary soft-skills to transition into entry level positions seamlessly. Educators are asked by employers and policy makers to provide instruction which would develop student skills in both the “hard” (academic and technical) and “soft” (personality traits and habits) skills required to be workplace-ready. The research study was designed to understand the degree to which internships enhance student soft-skill development, specifically in the areas of communication, teamwork, initiative, and, analytical thinking. Researcher-designed pre-post retrospective surveys were administered to students and one to corresponding supervisors to measure change in …

Development Of Copper Sulfide Nanoparticles For Photothermal And Chemo Therapy Of Cancer Cells, Yajuan Li Jan 2015

Development Of Copper Sulfide Nanoparticles For Photothermal And Chemo Therapy Of Cancer Cells, Yajuan Li

Open Access Dissertations

Cancer has become number one cause of death. Conventional treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or combination. The combinatorial therapy in one system is highly efficient and economical. Herein, two drug delivery systems with chemo and photothermal therapy are developed in order to enhance the therapeutic efficacy in A549 human lung cancer cells. The first one is hollow copper sulfide nanoparticle carrying doxorubicin (PEG-HCuSNPs-DOX). The second one is mesoporous silica coated CuS nanoparticles (CuS NPs) loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) (PEG-CuS@MSNs-DOX).

Both nano-drug delivery systems are pH sensitive, laser responsive, and photothermal convertible. CuS NPs are the photothermal sensitizers in both …

Adp-Ribosylation Factor 6 (Arf6) Regulates Integrin Αiibβ3 Trafficking, Platelet Spreading, And Clot Retraction, Yunjie Huang Jan 2015

Adp-Ribosylation Factor 6 (Arf6) Regulates Integrin Αiibβ3 Trafficking, Platelet Spreading, And Clot Retraction, Yunjie Huang

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Endocytic trafficking of platelet surface receptors plays a role in the accumulation of granule cargo (i.e. fibrinogen and VEGF) and thus could contribute to hemostasis, angiogenesis, or inflammation. However, the mechanisms of platelet endocytosis are poorly understood. The small GTP-binding protein, ADP-ribosylation factor 6 (Arf6), regulates integrin trafficking in nucleated cells; therefore, we posited that Arf6 functions similarly in platelets. To address this, we generated platelet-specific, Arf6 knockout mice. Arf6-/- platelets had a storage defect for fibrinogen but not other cargo, implying Arf6’s role in integrin αIIbβ3 trafficking. Additionally, platelets from Arf6-/- mice injected with biotinylated-fibrinogen, showed …

Instructional Writing Practices In Grade Five, Susan Elaine Newberry Jan 2015

Instructional Writing Practices In Grade Five, Susan Elaine Newberry

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nationally and locally, a paucity of students are effective writers. The purpose of this exploratory, sequential mixed methods study was to explore effective research-based writing strategies and influences on writing skills of 5th grade students. Guided by Vygotsky's zone of proximal development theory, the research questions investigated teachers' perceptions of the best instructional writing practices, the effect of writing practices on students' state writing scores, the relationship between student attendance and performance on the state writing test, and the amount of instructional planning dedicated to best writing practices. Data were collected from interviews with 5th grade teachers (N = 5), …

Sewer Overflows And The Vector Mosquito Proximity To Human West Nile Virus Infections, Andrea Simone Bowers Jan 2015

Sewer Overflows And The Vector Mosquito Proximity To Human West Nile Virus Infections, Andrea Simone Bowers

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

DeKalb and Fulton Counties, which share the metropolitan Atlanta area, have seen an increase in West Nile infected vector mosquitoes; the increase is associated with close proximity to combined sewer overflow facilities. Despite completion of the remediation system in 2008, the mosquito population testing positive for West Nile virus has increased each year from 2010 through 2012. Guided by the Geographical Information System framework and using spatial analysis and regression analyses, this study described and quantified the relationship between sewer system overflows and amplification of vector mosquitoes; an additional goal was to investigate their proximity to human cases of West …

The Effect Of Statins On Il-33 Mediated Mast Cell Function, Marcela Taruselli Jan 2015

The Effect Of Statins On Il-33 Mediated Mast Cell Function, Marcela Taruselli

Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrates original findings of statin effects on IL-33 stimulated mast cells. Statins are a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol production by targeting HMG CoA reductase. These commonly prescribed drugs have been shown to be immunomodulatory. In this study, we have found that pretreatment with statins has a variety of effects on IL-33 stimulated mast cells. Atorvastatin suppresses TNF and IL-6 production, while fluvastatin significantly enhances release of these proinflammatory cytokines in BMMCs. Although they have differing effects on cytokine production, both statins lowered ST2 expression on the cell surface, decreased cell viability, and enhanced expression of …

The Export Of An Algal Toxin Into Terrestrial Predators Via Emerging Aquatic Insects, Nicholas J. Moy Jan 2015

The Export Of An Algal Toxin Into Terrestrial Predators Via Emerging Aquatic Insects, Nicholas J. Moy

Theses and Dissertations

Algal blooms are directly related to human-caused nutrient enrichment of water bodies. The cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa produces microcystin (MC), a toxin that has been linked with mortalities and illness of many organisms. We show that MC is not constrained by the aquatic-terrestrial ecotone. MC was detected in a primary consumer and emerging aquatic invertebrate (Hexagenia Mayfly), a terrestrial insect and predator of emerging aquatic invertebrates (Tetragnathidae Spider), and a vertebrate consumer (Prothonotary Warbler). Mayfly and spider MC levels varied across the blooming period. MC levels in prothonotary warbler livers varied by age class; nestlings having the highest levels. MC levels …

Teaching Technical Theater: Learning, Not Just Doing, Christian J. Hershey Jan 2015

Teaching Technical Theater: Learning, Not Just Doing, Christian J. Hershey

Theses and Dissertations

I have seen a trend in the teaching of technical theatre towards a more practical and less theoretical education. This has brought about a change in viewpoint by professional technicians, as well as students, in regards to an academic degree. Due to this change and the rise of student debt, the impulse has been to encourage going directly into the field and learning the craft there instead of spending four years in an academic institution.

There has also been increased pressure on theatre departments to produce larger and more involved shows; both to draw in new students and to justify …

An Exploration Of Costume Design For David Emerson Toney's "Frankenstein: Dawn Of A Monster", Emily Atkins Jan 2015

An Exploration Of Costume Design For David Emerson Toney's "Frankenstein: Dawn Of A Monster", Emily Atkins

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis details the Costume Design process for David Emerson Toney’s Frankenstein: Dawn of a Monster at Virginia Commonwealth University. Toney’s original adaptation interprets Mary Shelley’s genre-defying novel as biography, directly influenced by the tragic events of her young life. Costumes differentiate the two narratives, with Mary Shelly in gray scale, regency-inspired modern dress and the novel in period and color. This follows the design process from concept to production to execution.
