The Effect Of Precipitation On The Spread Of Mosquito-Borne Diseases: A Case Study Of Florida Counties, Marvin Osbourne Jan 2015

The Effect Of Precipitation On The Spread Of Mosquito-Borne Diseases: A Case Study Of Florida Counties, Marvin Osbourne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The state of Florida is the third most populous state in the United States of America, with six (6) of its metropolitan areas dubbed as the fastest growing in the entire country. A mosquito bite may mean the transmission of a virus or disease which might be fatal. Hence, there is a need for the state to control mosquitoes through the various Departments of Mosquito Control in each of its sixty-seven (67) counties. Six locally acquired mosquito-borne viruses which affect humans and animals in the state of Florida were considered. This thesis used statistical methods to examine data for rainfall, …

An Investigation Of The Impacts Of Face-To-Face And Virtual Laboratories In An Introductory Biology Course On Students' Motivation To Learn Biology., Amber Reece

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of face-to-face and virtual laboratories in a large-enrollment introductory biology course on students* motivation to learn biology. The laboratory component of post-secondary science courses is where students have opportunities for frequent interactions with instructors and their peers (Seymour & Hewitt, 1997; Seymour, Melton, Wiese, & Pederson-Gallegos, 2005) and is often relied upon for promoting interest and motivation in science learning (Hofstein & Lunetta, 2003; Lunetta, Hofstein, & Clough, 2007). However, laboratory courses can be resource intensive (Jenkins, 2007), leading post-secondary science educators to seek alternative means of laboratory …

A High-Content Multiplexed Screening Platform For The Evaluation And Manipulation Of Force And Fatigue Of Adult Derived Skeletal Muscle Myotubes In Defined Serum-Free Medium, Christopher Mcaleer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The overall focus of this project has two parts: First, was to develop a protocol utilizing serum-free media formulations and defined plating and culture techniques to create functional in vitro myotubes derived from adult skeletal muscle satellite cells. The second was to manipulate the inherent muscle parameters such as force output and fatigue of these myotubes by employing exercise regimes or by small molecule application. The importance of serum-free medium use for in vitro cultures is becoming increasingly important in creating functional systems that can be validated for drug testing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Also, the study …

Friendship And Informant Characteristics Associated With Agreement Among Adolescent And Friend Ratings Of Behavior Problems., Brea-Anne Lauer Jan 2015

Friendship And Informant Characteristics Associated With Agreement Among Adolescent And Friend Ratings Of Behavior Problems., Brea-Anne Lauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although teacher and parent informants often are used to gather information regarding adolescents* emotional and behavioral functioning, research has suggested that agreement among these raters and adolescents* self-ratings tends to be low to moderate. Given that friends typically play an important role in the lives of adolescents, the present study sought to determine the relative agreement amongst adolescent self-reports and those of their friends as well as factors that might impact this agreement. In particular, a sample of 207 culturally diverse high school students were matched based on perceived friendship closeness and asked to provide ratings of their own emotional …

The Effect Of Pre-Service Teaching On Student Achievement Using A Co-Teaching Model At An Elementary School In A Large, Urban School District In Central Florida, Walton Mchale Jan 2015

The Effect Of Pre-Service Teaching On Student Achievement Using A Co-Teaching Model At An Elementary School In A Large, Urban School District In Central Florida, Walton Mchale

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The contribution of university student teachers (i.e., interns) to elementary school achievement was investigated. Specifically explored was the difference between student achievement scores in classes with interns who participated in a co-teaching model and interns in classes that did not employ any structured approach to intern teaching. The researcher compared seven classes that employed co-teaching, where the university intern teacher and master teacher remained in the class conducting instruction, to …

Diabetes Phenotypes In Transgenic Pancreatic Cancer Mouse Models, Toya Albury-Warren Jan 2015

Diabetes Phenotypes In Transgenic Pancreatic Cancer Mouse Models, Toya Albury-Warren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein Kinase B/AKT, a serine/threonine kinase with three isoforms (AKT1-3), is downstream of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), and signals through the phosphorylation and subsequent activation or inhibition of downstream substrates, such as mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) or glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK-3?), respectively. The AKT1 isoform is predominantly recognized for regulation of cell survival, growth, and proliferation, due to its constitutive activation in pancreatic cancers (e.g., islet cell carcinoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma). The progression of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most lethal common cancer, is initiated by activation mutations of the KRas oncogene. This leads to additional …

Inverse-Consistent Determination Of Young's Modulus Of Human Lung, Behnaz Seyfi Noferest Jan 2015

Inverse-Consistent Determination Of Young's Modulus Of Human Lung, Behnaz Seyfi Noferest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human lung undergoes respiration-induced deformation due to sequential inhalation and exhalation. Accurate determination of lung deformation is crucial for tumor localization and targeted radiotherapy in patients with lung cancer. Numerical modeling of human lung dynamics based on underlying physics and physiology enables simulation and virtual visualization of lung deformation. Dynamical modeling is numerically complicated by the lack of information on lung elastic behavior, structural heterogeneity as well as boundary constrains. This study integrates physics-based modeling and image-based data acquisition to develop the patient-specific biomechanical model and consequently establish the first consistent Young's modulus (YM) of human lung. This dissertation has …

The Effect Of Landscape Variables On Adult Mosquito (Diptera:Culicidae)Diversity And Behavior, Caitlyn Debevec Jan 2015

The Effect Of Landscape Variables On Adult Mosquito (Diptera:Culicidae)Diversity And Behavior, Caitlyn Debevec

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diseases vectored by mosquitoes cause millions of deaths each year. In modern times Florida*s disease risk has been reduced due to efforts to lessen the prevalence of mosquitoes through habitat modification of non-adults. With emerging diseases (i.e. Dengue and Chikunguya) encroaching into Florida from the Caribbean, this traditional approach may not be enough. Alternatively, we can better understand the ecology of how disease works in an ecosystem. One possible way is through the Dilution Effect, which states that the more species that are in a system the lower the chance for zoonosis. This project models mosquito diversity across regions, land …

Researching The Early History Of The Patent Policy: Getting Started, Robert Berry Jan 2015

Researching The Early History Of The Patent Policy: Getting Started, Robert Berry

Librarian Publications

There are a lot of reasons to research the early history of American patent policy. It is an inherently interesting history that provides a framework making contemporary patent policy more comprehensible and a foundation for interpreting historic patent records. For students it provides an opportunity to become familiar with some of basic primary sources that are a staple of research into American history. Also, of course, questions may arise from time to time that can only be authoritatively answered by researching this history.

The approach described below seeks to balance comprehensiveness with feasibility, and emphasizes the importance of creating a …

Genetic And Evolutionary Analysis Of Plant Replication Protein A 1 (Rpa1), Behailu Birhanu Aklilu Jan 2015

Genetic And Evolutionary Analysis Of Plant Replication Protein A 1 (Rpa1), Behailu Birhanu Aklilu

Doctoral Dissertations

Challenging human health issues include treatments for genetic diseases and providing improved agricultural crop output to feed the growing world population. The project described here, which focuses on how cells respond to chromosomal (genomic) damage, has significant implications in each example. In humans, accumulation of DNA damage induced mutations can result in genetic diseases such as cancer, and in plants can similarly result in genome instability, reducing productivity. Organisms from human to plants have conserved mechanisms to counteract DNA damage. However, detailed genetic and biochemical information on plant DNA repair systems is still limited. The goal of this dissertation was …

Silvopasture In The Northeastern United States, Joseph Nathan Orefice

Doctoral Dissertations

Silvopasture, the sustainable integration of livestock and trees on the same unit of land, may have the potential to contribute to agricultural productivity in the Northeastern United States and concurrently encourage the ecosystems services which trees provide. Extremely little is known regarding the ecological characteristics of silvopastures being utilized, their social and economic drivers, or their agricultural productivity. Silvopasture characteristics, management, and reasons for use were documented through a purposeful sample of silvopasture practitioners in New York and New England. Results document the functional role of silvopastures on regional farms. This research also investigated the ecological and production dynamics of …

The Influence Of Central Thalamus On Coding Properties Of Prefrontal Cortex, Benjamin Aaron Wormwood Jan 2015

The Influence Of Central Thalamus On Coding Properties Of Prefrontal Cortex, Benjamin Aaron Wormwood

Doctoral Dissertations

Medial thalamus has reciprocal connections with prefrontal cortex (PFC) that are thought to coordinate its activity with other areas of the telencephalon that support flexible goal-directed behavior. The mediodorsal nucleus is the primary source of specific thalamo-cortical projections to middle layers of PFC while midline and intralaminar nuclei provide modulatory inputs to deep and superficial layers of PFC and to anatomically-related areas of the basal ganglia and hippocampus. Each of these nuclei receive direct cortico-thalamic and indirect cortico- striato-pallidal input from PFC. Medial thalamic lesions impair flexible goal-directed behavior, exemplified by delayed non-matching to position tasks (DNMTP).

To elucidate the …

Hybrid Zone Dynamics Between Saltmarsh (Ammodramus Caudacutus) And Nelson's (Ammodramus Nelsoni) Sparrows, Jennifer Walsh Jan 2015

Hybrid Zone Dynamics Between Saltmarsh (Ammodramus Caudacutus) And Nelson's (Ammodramus Nelsoni) Sparrows, Jennifer Walsh

Doctoral Dissertations

Hybrid zones in nature have long been equated to “windows on the evolutionary process” providing unique environments to understand patterns of gene flow and introgression and the role of these mechanisms in maintaining biodiversity. Ongoing hybridization and introgression can lead to a number of conservation and evolutionary outcomes; as such, identifying the role of introgression in natural populations can provide new insights into species interactions while contributing to our understanding of evolutionary theory.

The research presented below characterizes hybrid zone dynamics between two tidal marsh endemics – the Saltmarsh (Ammodramus caudacutus) and Nelson’s (Ammodramus nelsoni) sparrow. Both species co-inhabit salt …

Development Of An Isotopic Approach For Detailing Heparin Sequences, Qing Guo Jan 2015

Development Of An Isotopic Approach For Detailing Heparin Sequences, Qing Guo

Doctoral Dissertations

Heparin/heparin sulfates are carbohydrate polyionic polymers that participate in a host of critically important biological processes such as blood anticoagulation, pathogen infection, cell differentiation, growth, migration and inflammation, to mention a few. A century has passed since heparin’s initial discovery with a fair understanding of its overall composition. Unfortunately, there has been no structural work at the detailed chemical level that might support a synthetic effort. In this study, I utilize a chemical derivatization strategy (dual permethylation) that imparts isotopic structural specificity, which can be followed by step-wise disassembly in an ion trap mass spectrometer, (MSn). A set of analytical …

Well-Being As A Measure Of Inequality Among The Retirement-Age Population: An Examination Of The Role Of Place, Migration, And Socioeconomic Status In Shaping Happy And Healthy Older Americans, Megan Henly Jan 2015

Well-Being As A Measure Of Inequality Among The Retirement-Age Population: An Examination Of The Role Of Place, Migration, And Socioeconomic Status In Shaping Happy And Healthy Older Americans, Megan Henly

Doctoral Dissertations

The proportion of the U.S. population comprised of seniors – those aged 65 and older – is projected to increase from 13% presently to 20% by 2030. With this demographic change, it is important to consider how older residents are faring, which older residents do best, and what communities are doing to support this population. Rather than examining income or wealth as a dependent variable, I predict two measures of well-being among older U.S. residents– one subjective and one objective. By linking survey data of the 50 and older population from the 2010 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) to a …
