Are Religion And Environmentalism Complements Or Substitutes?: A Club-Based Approach, Feler Bose, Timothy M. Komarek Jan 2015

Are Religion And Environmentalism Complements Or Substitutes?: A Club-Based Approach, Feler Bose, Timothy M. Komarek

Economics Faculty Publications

In this article, we analyze the causal link between membership in environmental groups and active participation and membership in religious groups. We use a club-based model and employ OLS and spatial econometrics with controls to test for whether membership and participation in a religious group is a substitute or complement for membership in environmental groups. Instrumental variables estimation was used as a robustness check. We found that religious participation and religious membership in evangelical groups are a substitute for environmental membership. Much of the work on environmental concerns has focused on answers to survey questions, not on membership. We used …

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell Jan 2015

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell

Turkish Journal of Botany

As a multigene family, plant aquaporins function not only in water transport but also in transport of small elements that are important for vegetative and reproductive growth of plants. Increasing evidence exhibits the relevance of aquaporins to tolerance against abiotic and biotic stresses such as drought, nutrient deficiency, and herbivore attack. With the accumulation of crop genome sequencing, it is suggested that several aquaporin genes are conserved in subchromosomal locations as tandem duplicated members. In this review, we will discuss the compelling nature of aquaporins as multifunctional transport channels that are often encoded in clustered regions of genomes and relevant …

Application Of Data Analysis In Cold Stress: A Case Study Of Nicotiana Benthamiana, İbrahi̇m Koç, Zi̇hni̇ Onur Çalişkaner, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z Jan 2015

Application Of Data Analysis In Cold Stress: A Case Study Of Nicotiana Benthamiana, İbrahi̇m Koç, Zi̇hni̇ Onur Çalişkaner, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z

Turkish Journal of Botany

Cold stress is a major environmental factor in plant life cycles. Nicotiana benthamiana, which belongs to the family Solanaceae, is one of the most commonly used model species in plant-microbe interaction studies. In total, 5205 differentially expressed genes were identified under cold stress in N. Benthamiana. Of these, 5029 were upregulated and 176 were downregulated within four time periods (4 h, 12 h, 24 h, and 48 h). The common up- and downregulated genes were identified as 692 and 6, respectively. The functional annotations of these genes were studied and these common genes involved in protein, RNA, miscellaneous enzyme families, …

Dog's Best Friend?: Vivisecting The "Animal" In Mark Twain's A Dog's Tale, Matthew Guzman Jan 2015

Dog's Best Friend?: Vivisecting The "Animal" In Mark Twain's A Dog's Tale, Matthew Guzman

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

“A Dog’s Tale” encapsulates the duality that the domesticated dog as both loyal “friend” and dependable scientific “instrument” denotes. Twain paints a dark portrait of man’s association with “beast.” Additionally, the story presents much more than a simple anthropomorphic tale. Although the nonhuman narrator has humanlike characteristics, one is always aware that Aileen Mavourneen is a dog. Nowhere is this divide more apparent than in the narrator’s failed attempts to “understand” the language and behavior of the human characters. The tale epitomizes the dogma of man’s rule over “lower” creatures, but it does not fully reaffirm these accepted beliefs. Rather, …

Modeling The Dynamic Processes Of Challenge And Recovery (Stress And Strain) Over Time, Fan Yang Jan 2015

Modeling The Dynamic Processes Of Challenge And Recovery (Stress And Strain) Over Time, Fan Yang

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A dynamic process with challenge and recovery is an important branch in the family of stochastic processes. The dependent data of such processes are often observed over time, and hence, are time dependent. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop methods to characterize a dynamic process with challenge and recovery under different dimensionalities and error assumptions. In this dissertation, a univariate dynamic process under Gaussian assumption is discussed first and a bi-logistic model is developed by three different methods: compartment, additive, and Bayesian. Then the discussion is extended to a bivariate hysteresis system with challenge and recovery. Three methods: …

Identification And Analysis Of Regulatory Elements In The Germin And Germin-Like Proteins Family Promoters In Rice, Iftikhar Ali, Tariq Mahmood Jan 2015

Identification And Analysis Of Regulatory Elements In The Germin And Germin-Like Proteins Family Promoters In Rice, Iftikhar Ali, Tariq Mahmood

Turkish Journal of Botany

Germins and germin-like proteins constitute a ubiquitous family of plant proteins and have a role in the defense against pathogen attacks. In the present work the Oryza sativa germin-like protein 1 (OsGLP1) and putative germin A (OsGerA) promoter regions of five Pakistani rice varieties were analyzed for variations in expression regulation of these promoters and similarity with others germin and germin-like protein promoters. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the studied OsGLP1 promoters were tightly clustered around the ancestral group while putative OsGerA clustered around the descendant group. HADDOCK was used for docking selected transcription factors (TFs) with its corresponding regulatory elements, …

Bylaw Governance, Ben Walther Jan 2015

Bylaw Governance, Ben Walther

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

This article argues that Delaware corporate law permits shareholders to use bylaws to circumscribe the managerial authority of the board of directors. While shareholders cannot mandate action by the board, they can enact specific prohibitions on its behavior, so long as the board retains enough discretion to implement—in practice, not merely in theory—its managerial policies by other means. The use of such circumscribing bylaws to discourage shirking (or analogous managerial abuses) by the directors or officers resembles the use of negative covenants in debt contracts that seek to prevent the debtor from squandering assets. Bylaw governance thus subtly but significantly …

Building Communities Through Literacy, Corinne Brion Jan 2015

Building Communities Through Literacy, Corinne Brion

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

On the Caribbean island of Haiti, when friends meet, one generally asks: “Ki jan ou ye?” (How are you?) and often times the other person responds: “ M’pa pi mal.” (I am not worse), ([2], p. 29). This common greeting indicates that life in Haiti is not stress-free. Haiti has openly battled political chaos, economic dependence, and high illiteracy rates since its independence from France in 1804. Many attempts to address these issues have been made by the international community. Scholars and theorists suggest that solutions should be rooted in building robust communities, using social empathy as a tool, in …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a highly prevalent form of human hepatic disease and feeding mice a high-fat, high-caloric (HFHC) diet is a standard model of NAFLD. To better understand the genetic basis of NAFLD, we conducted an expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analysis of mice fed a HFHC diet. Two-hundred sixty-five (A/J × C57BL/6J) F2 male mice were fed a HFHC diet for 8 wk. eQTL analysis was utilized to identify genomic regions that regulate hepatic gene expression of Xbp1s and Socs3. We identified two overlapping loci for Xbp1s and Socs3 on Chr 1 (164.0–185.4 Mb …

Some Speculation About Mirror Neurons And Copyright, Stephen M. Mcjohn Jan 2015

Some Speculation About Mirror Neurons And Copyright, Stephen M. Mcjohn

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The internet, a world-wide copy machine, caused some rethinking of copyright law. Cognitive science increasingly suggests that humans are smaller scale, more adaptable, copy machines. Copyright law may again change. V.S. Ramachandran’s "The Tell-Tale Brain" discusses how mirror neurons may enable imitation, detection of others’ intention, and empathy. Ramachandran suggests that mirror neuron circuits could provide the neural substrate for cultural transmission, language, and even consciousness. This essay speculates on the implications for copyright law. It’s not news that people copy. But if cognition and culture depend on the bottom-up imitation by mirror neurons, perhaps some of the central tenets …

Historical Trends In Size And Endemic Species For Serpentine Barrens In Pennsylvania, Kathleen Rengert Jan 2015

Historical Trends In Size And Endemic Species For Serpentine Barrens In Pennsylvania, Kathleen Rengert

Geography & Planning Student Work

The serpentine barrens are unique ecological niches in North America, many of which are located on the Maryland/Pennsylvania border along the Mason Dixon Line. These areas contain grasslands and savanna ecosystems with rare and endangered flora and fauna that have interested botanists, biogeographers, geologists, plant physiologists, and nature enthusiasts since John Bartram, Benjamin Franklin, and John Fothergill, M.D. (Alexander 2009; Dann 1988; Pennell 1930). Since the European settlement of the North American continent in the 1750’s, the barrens have remained relatively stable. However in the past 50 years natural fires have been suppressed, grazing and logging have ceased, and the …

Appearing Otherwise: Changing Alice Into The Woman Of Wonderland, Emily R. Aguiló-Pérez

English Faculty Publications

In Chapter IX of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (hereafter abbreviated as AAW) Alice receives yet another piece of advice, this time from The Duchess, who tells her “be what you would seem to be” to others (Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland 93). Being what others want you to be does not sound like the best advice a little girl can receive, yet the truth is that The Duchess is not so far from Alice’s reality. Looking at numerous previous adaptations of Carroll’s books it becomes evident that the character Alice has been changed several times and transformed into different …
