Design And Evaluation Of A Primary / Secondary Pumping System For A Heat Pump Assisted Solar Thermal Loop, Kyle Gene Krockenberger

Open Access Theses

A heat pump assisted solar thermal system was designed, commissioned, tested and analyzed over a period of two years. The unique system uses solar energy whenever it is available, but switches to heat pump mode at night or whenever there is a lack of solar energy. The solar thermal energy is added by a variety of flat plat solar collectors and an evacuated tube heat pipe solar collector. The working medium in the entire system is a 50% mixture of propylene glycol and water for freeze protection. During the design and evaluation the primary / secondary pumping system was the …

Analyzing The Perceptions Of The General Public With Regard To Meat Production In The U.S.: A Spotlight On Pork Production And The Impacts Of The Fair Oaks Farms’ Pig Adventure, Ann Marie Cummins

Open Access Theses

Consumers have an increasing amount of information available to them while make purchasing decisions for livestock products. This information increasingly includes both production and product components. It is evident that along with this increasing amount of available information consumers also have an increased interest in farming practices associated with the rearing of livestock. Therefore, it is important to have an increased understanding in consumer’s perceptions and level of concern for production attributes, such as animal welfare, relative to product attributes such as taste and price. This analysis examines United States residents’ demographics, knowledge, sources of information, and perceptions on livestock …

Morphological Plasticity Of Invasive Silver Carp In Divergent Midwestern Rivers, Katherine Flynn Touzinsky Jan 2015

Morphological Plasticity Of Invasive Silver Carp In Divergent Midwestern Rivers, Katherine Flynn Touzinsky

Open Access Theses

In the past decade, silver carp (SC; Hypopthalmicthys molitrix) have incited a great quantity of scientific research because their establishment and success in the Midwestern U.S. has led to concerns that they could invade the Great Lakes Basin. These previous studies have identified phenotypic plasticity in SC behavior and spawning as they invade novel environments. Although divergent habitats have been shown to elicit morphological plasticity in multiple fish species, similar research has not been conducted for SC despite their observed plasticity in other traits. I examined SC collected from two hydrogeomorphically divergent rivers, the Illinois River (IR) and middle Wabash …

Can We Put Photobiology To Work? Using Light To Manipulate The Nutritional And Sensory Properties Of Greenhouse Tomatoes, Michael Dzakovich Jan 2015

Can We Put Photobiology To Work? Using Light To Manipulate The Nutritional And Sensory Properties Of Greenhouse Tomatoes, Michael Dzakovich

Open Access Theses

While generally viewed within the context of plant growth and development, different qualities of light are also powerful elicitors of secondary metabolic pathways in plants that affect the nutritional value and flavor of edible tissues. Leveraging fundamental photobiology principles, our studies sought to use different qualities of supplemental light including ultraviolet-B (UV-B), UV-A, blue, red, and far-red as an environmental treatment to restore garden-grown flavor and nutritional attributes to greenhouse-grown tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum); a commercially important crop that has a poor reputation compared to its garden-grown counterparts. To test our hypotheses, we used a battery of physicochemical analyses that included …

Investigating The Amino Acid Digestibility Of Alternative Protein Sources And Determining The Impact Of Dietary Fiber On Energy, Nitrogen, And Amino Acid Digestibility In Growing Pigs, Bradley M. Cotten

Open Access Theses

Three experiments were designed to quantify the nitrogen (N) and amino acid (AA) digestibility of various protein sources fed to growing pigs. The protein ingredients were sunflower meal, cottonseed meal, canola meal, camelina meal, egg albumen, casein, blood meal, plasma meal, potato protein concentrate, soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate, and linseed meal, which were fed as the sole source of amino acids for the animals and were included in semi-purified, corn starch-based diets. A semi-purified, nitrogen-free diet (NFD) was used to estimate endogenous losses of AA. In each experiment, pigs were surgically fitted with a simple T-cannula at the …

In Vivo Analysis Of A Salt Bridge At The External Gate Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Serotonin Transporter In Response To Amphetamines, Timothy J. Beenen Jan 2015

In Vivo Analysis Of A Salt Bridge At The External Gate Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Serotonin Transporter In Response To Amphetamines, Timothy J. Beenen

Open Access Theses

Monoamine neurotransmitter transporters are membrane proteins responsible for the clearing of biogenic amines from a synapse. These transporters are targets for many important pharmaceuticals including antidepressants, as well as psychostimulant drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines. Amphetamines are believed to elicit their psychostimulant activity primarily by inducing a reversal of the transport cycle and increasing neurotransmitter release into the synapse, though the mechanism of this activity is incompletely understood. Previous in vitro research has suggested functional significance of a conserved salt bridge in the serotonin transporter (SERT) in amphetamine-induced 5-HT efflux. This salt bridge is disrupted in the Drosophila melanogaster …

Investigations Into The Anti-Collagenase Efficacy Of Serum And Plasma, Emily Dakin Conway Jan 2015

Investigations Into The Anti-Collagenase Efficacy Of Serum And Plasma, Emily Dakin Conway

Open Access Theses

Corneal ulcers are a commonly encountered problem in domesticated species and can cause significant pain, incur a high cost for the owner, and result in blindness or eventual enucleation. The progressive deepening of corneal ulcers is mediated by enzymatic destruction of stromal collagen (termed keratomalacia) when collagenases from endogenous and exogenous sources are active on the corneal surface. The inhibition of collagenases can therefore be crucial to mitigating the damage that breakdown of corneal stromal collagen causes. In ulcers where collagenase activity is suspected, the use of topical serum has been recommended, in both human and veterinary medicine, primarily due …

Rituals Upon Celluloid: The Need For Crime And Punishment In Contemporary Film, J C. Oleson Jan 2015

Rituals Upon Celluloid: The Need For Crime And Punishment In Contemporary Film, J C. Oleson

Cleveland State Law Review

Most members of the public lack first-hand experience with the criminal justice system; nevertheless, they believe that they possess phenomenological knowledge about it. In large part, the public’s understandings of crime and punishment are derived from television and film, which provide modern audiences with a vision of institutions that are normally occluded from view. While public rituals of punishment used to take place on the scaffold, equivalent moral narratives about crime and punishment now occur on film because modern punishment is imposed outside of the public gaze. Yet because crime films distort what they depict, the public’s view of crime …

Transcriptional Stress Response In Foodborne Pathogens, Aaron M. Pleitner

Open Access Dissertations

Novel molecular method use is leading to better identification and understanding of microbial presence in food and food processing environments. The application of molecular methods targeting foodborne pathogens provides genetic profiling and targeted intervention methods. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) provides information on the genomic uniqueness of specific pathogens and is being implemented in epidemiological investigations. Transcriptomic profiling allows for tracking the differential expression of genes and elucidating stress responses. Effective methods and treatments require an understanding of intervention (e.g. sanitizers) and treatment (e.g. antibiotics) mechanisms and efficacies. Accurate novel molecular method use requires proper learning of theory and data management. ^ …

Synthetic Steganography: Methods For Generating And Detecting Covert Channels In Generated Media, Philip Carson Ritchey Jan 2015

Synthetic Steganography: Methods For Generating And Detecting Covert Channels In Generated Media, Philip Carson Ritchey

Open Access Dissertations

Issues of privacy in communication are becoming increasingly important. For many people and businesses, the use of strong cryptographic protocols is sufficient to protect their communications. However, the overt use of strong cryptography may be prohibited or individual entities may be prohibited from communicating directly. In these cases, a secure alternative to the overt use of strong cryptography is required. One promising alternative is to hide the use of cryptography by transforming ciphertext into innocuous-seeming messages to be transmitted in the clear. ^ In this dissertation, we consider the problem of synthetic steganography: generating and detecting covert channels in generated …

Overweight Vehicle Permitting Alternatives, Stephanie R Everett Jan 2015

Overweight Vehicle Permitting Alternatives, Stephanie R Everett

Open Access Dissertations

Overweight vehicles exceed the federal and/or state statutory limits for either the gross vehicle weight (GVW) or the weight of individual axles or axle groups. National and state limits on vehicle weights were established to preserve the highway infrastructure. Past research has shown that overweight operations, while causing significant damage to roads and bridges, can enhance the trucking industry productivity, and thus yield economic benefits both regionally and nationally. In the United States, individual states administer oversize and overweight vehicle permit programs to regulate and collect revenues from overweight operations. Differences in the truck size and weight limits and overweight …

Control Of Bovine Pyruvate Carboxylase Expression By Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Impact On Fatty Acid Metabolism, Katherine Elizabeth Boesche Jan 2015

Control Of Bovine Pyruvate Carboxylase Expression By Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Impact On Fatty Acid Metabolism, Katherine Elizabeth Boesche

Open Access Dissertations

Pyruvate carboxylase (PC; EC 6.4.1.1) ostensibly links carbohydrate and lipid metabolism by supplying oxaloacetate (OAA) from the carboxylation of pyruvate. The OAA pool is necessary in maintaining the anaplerotic supply of carbons to the TCA cycle, and to promote the complete oxidation, to CO2, of acetyl-CoA. The actions of PC in supplying OAA are critical during periods of increased cellular lipid load, including the negative energy balance experienced by periparturient dairy cows. The bovine PC gene contains three promoter sequences, with products of the proximal promoter (PCP1) being specific to glucogenic and lipogenic tissues. Previous work links control of bovine …

Impact Of L-Arginine Transportation On Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cell Function, Cansu Cimen Bozkus Jan 2015

Impact Of L-Arginine Transportation On Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cell Function, Cansu Cimen Bozkus

Open Access Dissertations

Inflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome has been linked to autoimmune inflammation. Likewise, prostatitis has been linked to prostate cancer development and progression. A better understanding of the mechanisms by which inflammation is regulated may provide the foundation for novel approaches to controlling inflammation. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a heterogeneous population of immature cells that expand during benign and cancer-associated inflammation. MDSC are characterized by their ability to potently inhibit T cell responses. Therefore, by dampening inflammation, MDSC benefit autoimmune diseases. Instead, they aggravate cancer by blocking antitumor immune responses. Identification of mechanisms underlying MDSC activities can enable the …

Through the multi- phase interactions between researcher and participants of this Delphi study, specific survey questions were developed such as, how does the UCD method work in gamification design, how well does it work, and suggestions on how it should be used. Gamification design experts were recruited as research participants and four Delphi rounds of data collection were conducted. Thirtythree design heuristics within five …

Assessing Inter-Rater Agreement For Compositional Data, Ningning Chen Jan 2015

Assessing Inter-Rater Agreement For Compositional Data, Ningning Chen

Open Access Dissertations

Compositional data are non-negative vectors whose elements sum to one (e.g., [0.1, 0.5, 0.4]). This type of data occurs in many research areas where the relative magnitudes between the vector’s elements are of primary interest. In this dissertation we propose novel methodology for assessing inter-rate agreement based on compositional data. This is needed because existing agreement measures either involve converting the vector to a univariate value, thereby losing information, or they fail to account for the sum-to-one restriction. We propose a novel Bayesian approach, enabled by Markov chain Monte Carlo, to investigate differences in the pattern of compositional vector scores. …
