An Imbricate Mid Crustal Suture Zone: The Mojave-Yavapai Province Boundary In Grand Canyon, Arizona, Mark Holland
An Imbricate Mid Crustal Suture Zone: The Mojave-Yavapai Province Boundary In Grand Canyon, Arizona, Mark Holland
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Mojave and Yavapai provinces in southwestern Laurentia contain evolved and juvenile crust respectively, but the nature of their boundary remains uncertain. This paper analyzes the U-Pb-Hf isotopic composition of zircons from both the oldest plutons and metasedimentary rocks in Grand Canyon. My results show that the Vishnu Schist does not support suturing. Paradoxically, plutons east and west of the Crystal shear zone support suturing based on different U-Pb-Hf isotopic characteristics across the shear zone. I interpret the nature of this boundary to be the existence of an Archean substrate which is sampled by plutons west of the shear zone. …
El Papel De Las Cuevas En La Guerras De Los Antiguos Mayas, Alejandro Sheseña
El Papel De Las Cuevas En La Guerras De Los Antiguos Mayas, Alejandro Sheseña
KIP Articles
By studying archaeological and epigraphic sources, James Brady, Christopher Helmke and Pierre Colas have found that, among the Late Classic Maya, in contexts of war, caves of one's enemies could act as valued targets for destruction due to the great politico-religious significance they possessed. This is, in short, a very important contribution to the issue of the war between the ancient Maya. However, a modern conflict occurred between two indigenous communities in Mexico, which involved features of the natural landscape, suggests that the issue of the role of caves in the Classic warfare was much more complex. Whereas some aspects …

Virgin Of Guadalupe: The Evolution Of Mexico's Mother Image Into A Cultural Icon, Tashina Garcia-Garza
Virgin Of Guadalupe: The Evolution Of Mexico's Mother Image Into A Cultural Icon, Tashina Garcia-Garza
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Since its time of creation, the Virgin of Guadalupe image has been used in various political, social, and humanitarian struggles throughout Mexico and the United States. This remarkable image is responsible for unifying the people during post-conquest Mexico when discriminatory treatment and slavery of the indigenous people was common. The image is a symbol of Mexican nationalism embedded with Catholic and Aztec religious beliefs that has evolved into a popular cultural icon. This progression of her popularity can be seen in artistic expression from Mexican artists in the sixteenth century to the Chicano art movement in the twentieth century United …

Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by progressive muscle stiffness and rigidity, mostly involving axial muscles, resulting in functional disability. It is associated with elevated anti- Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) antibody levels. Electromyography findings are often diagnostic. We present a case of a 48 years old male, who presented with progressive stiffness and rigidity of axial muscles and limbs. His EMG was consistent with SPS. Anti GAD antibodies were markedly elevated. He was treated with rituximab and has improved significantly. SPS is a difficult diagnosis, usually under diagnosed due to lack of awareness among medical community. …

The cause of type 1 diabetes continues to be a focus of investigation. Studies have revealed that interferon α (IFNα) in pancreatic islets after viral infection or treatment with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), a mimic of viral infection, is associated with the onset of type 1 diabetes. However, how IFNα contributes to the onset of type 1 diabetes is obscure. In this study, we found that 2-5A-dependent RNase L (RNase L), an IFNα-inducible enzyme that functions in the antiviral and antiproliferative activities of IFN, played an important role in dsRNA-induced onset of type 1 diabetes. Using RNase L-deficient, rat insulin promoter-B7.1 …

Task Driven Design Of Mechanisms And Robotic Systems Using Kinematic Mapping And Fourier Schemes, Xiangyun Li
Task Driven Design Of Mechanisms And Robotic Systems Using Kinematic Mapping And Fourier Schemes, Xiangyun Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation deals with the problem of task driven design of mechanisms and robotic systems via Fourier and Kinematic Mapping schemes. Task driven design requires that the synthesis process be initiated from the task motion itself rather than from a specific mechanism or robotic system. In other words, extrinsic or intrinsic characteristics of task path or motion is considered as the driving force to the synthesis of mechanisms and robotics systems. Kinematic Mapping approach is applied in the framework of task driven design to synthesize multi-degrees-of-freedom planar and spatial manipulators in a unified way. We present novel, unified, and simultaneous …
On The Local-Global Principle For Integral Apollonian, Xin Zhang
On The Local-Global Principle For Integral Apollonian, Xin Zhang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Starting with three mutually tangent circles, in each of the two gaps we inscribe three circles, and then we inscribe three new circles into the newly generated circles, so on so forth? We obtain a packing of infinitely many circles, and we give a name Apollonian-3 packings. It turns out there exist packings of this type with curvatures (1 over radius) all integers. I will discuss what we know about the integers arising as curvatures from these packings. I will discuss the reduction theorem, the symmetry group, and a density one theorem towards the local-global conjecture. | 47 pages
The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Oligodendrocyte Development, Cindy Viviana Leiton
The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Oligodendrocyte Development, Cindy Viviana Leiton
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are characterized by their capacity for proliferation, migration, and maturation into myelinating oligodendrocytes. Among the known molecular mechanisms that regulate OPC development are 1) the extracellular matrix (ECM) protein laminin that is known to regulate OPC development as it is required for timely oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination, and 2) an oligodendroglial laminin receptor, dystroglycan, which regulates oligodendrocyte morphology and maturation. ECM proteins and receptors can be remodeled by proteolytic enzymes known as the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), but little is known regarding these events and their consequent functions in CNS development and regeneration. While the laminin-dystroglycan adhesion …
Alternate Pore Isoforms Of A Mechanosensory Ion Channel In Drosophila, Shao-Kuei Huang
Alternate Pore Isoforms Of A Mechanosensory Ion Channel In Drosophila, Shao-Kuei Huang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis examines the expression and function of alternately spliced isoforms of No Mechanoreceptor Potential C (NOMPC), a TRPN ion channel protein expressed in several types of mechanosensory neuron in Drosophila. nompC mutant flies are severely uncoordinated; electrophysiological recordings show that they lack receptor currents in mechanosensory bristles and have reduced sound-evoked potentials in the antennal nerve. Exons 14 and 15 of the nompC gene both encode a highly conserved part of the protein, including the channel pore. To find how these exons are used, I first identified six different cDNA isoforms. Among these were two major isoforms with mutually …
Real-Time Dynamics Of The Confining String, Frasher Loshaj
Real-Time Dynamics Of The Confining String, Frasher Loshaj
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describes the interaction of quarks and gluons, which are charged under the color group. Due to confinement of color charge, only colorless hadrons are observed in experiment. At very short distances (hard processes), perturbation theory is a valid tool for calculations and predictions can be made which agree well with experiment. Confinement, which is not yet understood from first principles, is important even for hard processes, because after the perturbative evolution is finished, the final colored particles combine to create the final state hadrons. There are many effective theories of confinement developed over the years. We will …
Integrability And Non-Integrability In The Ising Model, Michael Assis
Integrability And Non-Integrability In The Ising Model, Michael Assis
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The Ising model at magnetic field H=0 is one of the most important exactly solved models in statistical mechanics, solved on the square lattice in 1944 by Onsager, and later by others on the triangular lattice; its magnetic susceptibility at H=0 continues to be an unsolved aspect of the model, however. The susceptibility can either be viewed as a sum over all correlation functions of the integrable model at H=0, or else as a second derivative of the free energy of the non-integrable Ising model in a field. Therefore, its analytic properties, though derived from the non-integrable model, can be …
Artifice, Aesthetics, And The Liminal Grotesque In Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, David Zachary Turchin
Artifice, Aesthetics, And The Liminal Grotesque In Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, David Zachary Turchin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Stanley Kubrick's oeuvre is characterized throughout by a distinct and unique interest in violence, sexuality, the uncomfortable, the eerie, the unknown, the beyond, and the grotesque. His aesthetic and conceptual approach achieves a special quality of calling attention to the liminal - those unspoken, unseen, uncertain, ungrounded, fleeting, and perhaps ineffable, moments and spaces in the visual and narrative presentation that occur between scenes, between characters, between images, and between the viewer and the film itself. In doing so Kubrick destabilizes the viewing experience and suspends the viewer in moments of uncertainty, discomfort, and ambiguity, achieving this effect even in …
The Effect Of Patch Dynamics And Nutrient Availability On The Production Of Zostera Marina Seeds Within Shinnecock Bay, Ny, Lisa Jackson
The Effect Of Patch Dynamics And Nutrient Availability On The Production Of Zostera Marina Seeds Within Shinnecock Bay, Ny, Lisa Jackson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Exposing Zostera marina to fertilized porewater has been shown to increase vegetative shoot density and leaf growth rates, as well as affect morphological shoot characteristics including increasing leaf length, leaf area and the number of leaves per shoot. However, aside from changes in shoot density, records of morphological changes in reproductive shoots subjected to increased nutrient availability are lacking. To address this, five replicate ambient and nutrient enriched patches, each between 0.5 and 2.0 m2, were selected within a developing Z. marina meadow in Shinnecock Bay, NY. Fertilizer stakes, with a N:P:K of 15:3:3, were used to amend enriched patches …
Sorption Behavior Of Antimony(V) On Hydroxyapatite, Boyoung Song
Sorption Behavior Of Antimony(V) On Hydroxyapatite, Boyoung Song
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Antimony (Sb) is regarded as an emerging environmental contaminant, reflecting its previously unrecognized presence in aquatic and soil systems. Oxidative dissolution releases Sb into surface environments primarily in the form of oxyanions. A primary control on the mobility of Sb species is sorption onto mineral surfaces. Although recent studies have reported Sb sorption onto various mineral surfaces, no studies have been performed on the sorption behavior of Sb with hydroxyapatite, which is an effective sorbent. The objective of this study is to understand the sorption behavior of Sb(V) on the surface of hydroxyapatite, Ca5(PO4)3OH. The oxidized form of antimony, Sb(V), …

On The Subject Of Analyzing Iron And Sulfur Bearing Minerals From Three Extreme Environments: Geological Sequestration, Acid Mine Drainage, And Mars, Elizabeth Christ Sklute
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The global iron and sulfur cycles are linked to some of the most ancient metabolisms on our planet, and, therefore, possibly other planetary bodies. They are also linked to some of our most pressing environmental problems on Earth. Understanding their interactions and monitoring their occurrence is, therefore, an important aspect of exploring planetary bodies and sustainable resource management. This dissertation reports investigations into the identification and analysis of iron and sulfur bearing phases in three extreme environments: Acid-gas/CO2 co-sequestration, acid mine drainage (AMD), and Mars. H2S and SO2 (acid gases) are often co-contaminants in CO2 …
