Life Revised, Martha A. Parker

BYU Studies

The author of this personal essay describes how, at age nineteen, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Four years later, the unthinkable happened. After losing her ability to walk, she was informed by her doctor that she was one of only 350 out of 110,000 people currently taking Tysabri worldwide who had developed a condition called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a brain infection. Her cerebellum was slowly being eaten alive. Of those 350 people, only 15 percent had survived. In other words, her chances were slim. This essay is the story of her battle with PML and the impressive lessons …

"The Redemption Of Zion Must Needs Come By Power": Insights Into The Camp Of Israel Expedition, 1834, Matthew C. Godfrey

BYU Studies

The story of the Camp of Israel, better known as Zion's Camp, has been told many times. The tale of Joseph Smith leading a group of over two hundred individuals to Missouri to reclaim Mormon lands lost after Jackson County mobs forced the Saints from the county has assumed almost mythical status. Yet details about some aspects of the camp are still somewhat murky, especially in terms of its membership, its funding, its provisioning, and its intentions. Those of us working on the Joseph Smith Papers have discovered many new insights as we have examined documents pertaining to the camp. …

The Tiptoe, Robbie Taggart Dec 2014

The Tiptoe, Robbie Taggart

BYU Studies

"My theology stresses the reality of continued, continuing revelation," writes the author of this essay. "God speaks, not spake. . . . But it is sometimes a real wrestle to know when he is speaking and what he wants. It takes attentiveness, and patience. Sometimes weeks pass without a whisper." He illustrates this idea with a story about stalking squirrels with his four-year-old son. After almost seeing one, the author, who has asked God to grant his son this simple wish, prays in silent resignation, "Well, thanks for trying." But then the wish is granted in a spectacular manner.

"A Peculiar People": Anti-Mormonism And The Making Of Religion In Nineteenth-Century America, J. Spencer Fluhman, George L. Mitton

BYU Studies

Latter-day Saints were often surprised or astonished at the amount of anti-Mormon rhetoric and sentiment that seemed to come out of the woodwork during the Romney candidacies. While to a varying degree there has always been an obvious anti-Mormon backdrop, it is an awakening to realize the strong, latent undercurrent that surfaces at times. J. Spencer Fluhman's book on anti-Mormonism in the nineteenth century is a helpful contribution to an understanding of the origins, sources, trends, and implications of such religious aversion. Fluhman is a professor of history at Brigham Young University and editor of the Mormon Studies Review. The …

The Utilization Of The Library Innovation Project As An Intervention Of Developing Literacy In Morogoro Region Of Tanzania, Roselyne Obiero Ayieko

Master of Education

Due to high rate of enrolment in primary schools which is as a result of UPE, more children are going to school but the literacy levels are very low in Tanzania. More children are leaving school without attaining basic literacy that can make them function fully in the society. The situation is even worse in the rural areas. The situation has called for the NGOs, to intervene to bring about equity and equality to the people of Turiani. The RR has intervened in the rural areas of Turiani by constructing libraries to be utilized to improve literacy in the region. …

The Paradoxes Of Poverty: Urban Space And Ideologies Of Intervention In The "Compassionate" City Of San Francisco, Andrea M. Lopez

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines a subset of urban poor women who live at the nexus of poverty and housing instability and who are exposed to multiple forms of violence and intense bodily suffering. I conducted two years of ethnographic research with a cohort of unstably housed women who have long histories of illicit drug use and who cycle between multiple single room occupancy hotels in two San Francisco neighborhoods. In this dissertation, I take as my analytic object the examination of the key institutional sites (what I call the local geography of hypermarginality) and the strategies for intervention deployed by the …

Use Of Social Media In Disaster Relief During The Kuantan (Malaysia) Flood, T. Chong, S.L. Pan, C. Leong, S. Bahri, A.F. Ahmad Khan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Natural disasters, particularly hydro-meteorological (climate-related) disasters such as droughts, tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons and floods, have increased in prevalence and severity in recent decades. During these disasters, the most pressing relief needs are food, water, sanitation and shelter. While relief organizations are increasingly utilizing the power of social media for informational tools such as disaster response crisis mapping, social media-derived relief efforts initiated by the general public have also increased in popularity. Compared to relief organizations, which have greater access to resources, relief efforts initiated by the general public are typically less organized and more personal and exploratory in nature. This …

A Comparative Study Of Testing Semantic Web Services, N. Anari, H. Saboohi, G. Ahakian

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Web Services provide efficient reusability mechanism, thereby reducing the development time and cost. Mostly the source code of web services is unavailable to other developers who use these services. The manual effort spent by them in testing these web services is very large in order to increase the interoperability. Thus, automated testing needs to be developed for testing these Web services. This paper reviews test cases for Web Services using reduction techniques Pair-Wise Testing (PWT) and Orthogonal Array Testing (OAT) and compares the two techniques with general method. The structure of Web Services is specified using UML diagrams. The pre …

Adequacy assessment of the existing Time of Dispatch (TD) rules is an academic primary step to improve the regulation of electronic commerce laws. This study aims to evaluate the ASEAN countries based on the adequacy of their TD rules. We propose an extended Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method for evaluation of ASEAN countries’ TD based on experts’ judgments. Fuzzy TOPSIS is initially a Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method. In this study, we extend it to a one criterion group decision making method. A group of academic experts is assigned for the judgment …

Against All Odds: How A Government's Open Source Software (Oss) Implementation Survived, S. Bahri, N.I. Jaafar Dec 2014

Against All Odds: How A Government's Open Source Software (Oss) Implementation Survived, S. Bahri, N.I. Jaafar

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this study, we suggest that actors and their relationship in an information systems (IS) implementation influence the survival of a government's open source software (OSS) project. Specifically, we investigated the OSS implementation by the Malaysian government since 2002. Due to the numerous and enormous challenges faced by such implementation such as inertia and concern about the quality of the software, the odds are often stacked against such project to survive. The theoretical lens of this study was the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) while the case study research method was employed to identify the actors and their relationships in ensuring the …

Comparing Malaysian And Scottish Firms On Practices For Strategic Capability Management, K. Kanapathy, R. Dekkers Dec 2014

Comparing Malaysian And Scottish Firms On Practices For Strategic Capability Management, K. Kanapathy, R. Dekkers

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The study of practices for Strategic Capacity Management at five Malaysian companies and four Scottish companies shows that the Malaysian manufacturing managers acted more reactive due to pressures by sales and processing orders, whereas the Scottish managers were implementing a manufacturing strategy more 'independently'. Problems with suppliers, albeit sometimes caused by outsourcing, feature high on the list of challenges in both samples. Alignment of organisational structures and investment in technologies are seen by all as key to aligning the manufacturing strategy with the competitive strategy, though actual investments tend to be happening more in Scottish companies.

Efficiency Maximization Of Resonant Coupled Wireless Power Transfer System Via Impedance Matching Based On Coupling Tuning, S.D. Barman, A.W. Reza, N. Kumar

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Non-radiative wireless power transfer (WPT) system using strong magnetic resonant coupling has been recently proposed and has shown more prospects in mid-range wireless power transmission due to its operating range and efficiency. The efficiency of such WPT system changes with the coupling distance between the coils changes, which is a critical issue for high efficient power transmission. In this paper, we demonstrate an impedance matching approach based on coupling tuning to enhance and maximize the efficiency of the system. The matching conditions are derived by analysing an equivalent circuit model of the system using reflected load theory (RLT) along with …
