From Limp Lettuce To Kaleidoscope Salad: Making Your Instruction Sessions Pop For All Patrons With Universal Design For Learning Principles, Christina C. Wray
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Universal Design for learning is an instructional design framework that promotes inclusive classrooms and environments where multiple learners at multiple levels are learning together in a general education setting. The fundamental idea of universal design is that you can teach material in a way that is accessible to ALL learners instead of being designed for a specific ability level. The Universal Design for Learning framework takes it a step further and introduces three key concept. When designing instruction we should:
• Provide multiple means of representation
• Provide multiple means of expression
• Provide multiple means of engagement
This can …

Librarians strive to address the information needs of diverse populations. At East Carolina University's Joyner Library, we are collaborating with Project STEPP to improve our information literacy services for students with multiple learning disabilities. Project STEPP (Supporting Transition and Education through Planning Partnerships) is an innovative program that offers comprehensive academic, social and life-skills support to a select number of students with learning disabilities who have shown the potential to succeed at the college level. In Fall 2011, Project STEPP relocated to a space with office areas and study rooms in Joyner Library. Our collaboration began with a survey of …
21st Century Skills And Pre-Service Teacher Education, Jillian Brandt Maruskin
21st Century Skills And Pre-Service Teacher Education, Jillian Brandt Maruskin
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
The phrase “21st century skills” has been a buzzword among librarians for some time now, but is still working its way into the vocabulary of educators and education administrators. 21st century skills (critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, creativity, communication, and innovation) are an integral part of ensuring a successful transition into college. It has become clear that efforts to ease this transition are to be a collaborative effort among librarians, educators, and administrators. Academic librarians in particular hold a great responsibility in this effort because well-prepared college freshman increase the likelihood of retention and student success.
This session will outline …

Instant Classroom: Teach Anywhere With A Classroom In A Box, Meridith Wolnick, Todd Burks
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
What do you do when your classroom equipment and set-up are obstacles to effective, powerful and memorable instruction? The University of Virginia Library saw that challenge and sought a solution to teach undergraduate students effective research skills without compromising the amount or quality of instruction. What started as a half-baked idea sprung into reality in the form of a an iPad equipped, fully mobile classroom in a box.
Faced with an ever shrinking supply of computer-equipped classrooms, we increasingly relied on student-supplied technology to teach research tools and skills. This presents new challenges; not everyone has access to a mobile …
Beyond Classroom Evaluation: Structuring Research For Dissemination, Andrea Falcone, Stephanie Wiegand
Beyond Classroom Evaluation: Structuring Research For Dissemination, Andrea Falcone, Stephanie Wiegand
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Librarians often pursue worthwhile classroom evaluations, yet the results of those evaluations do not always reach beyond the water cooler or an administrator’s office door. Whether successful or not, our findings can lead to rapid improvement in instructional methods, but only if we share our knowledge. If the thought of disseminating your research is overwhelming, you are not alone. This interactive session will provide you with techniques for parsing the research process to enable dissemination, especially through formal channels. Participants will draft an action plan for an instruction-related research project, including specific tasks, time horizon, and resource allocation. This session …
Beyond The Checklist: Using Rhetorical Analysis To Evaluate Sources As Social Acts, Joel Burkholder
Beyond The Checklist: Using Rhetorical Analysis To Evaluate Sources As Social Acts, Joel Burkholder
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Rhetorical analysis can transform information literacy instruction. A familiar concept in the study of rhetoric, it illustrates that all messages are deliberate, social acts, constructed by authors to achieve specific purposes and speak to specific audiences. To be effective, authors must make rhetorical choices that suit both the purpose and audience they are addressing.
Under the current paradigm of source evaluation, librarians largely ignore the rhetorical nature of messages, focusing instead on the identification of surface features that indicate high-quality information. This can lead to the impression that messages are inert objects, rather than dynamic, social acts. Forms of communication, …

Maximizing Student Engagement And Learning With Team-Based Learning, Trudi Jacobson, Judy Carey Nevin
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Team-based learning (TBL) has the potential to radically reinvent what happens in the classroom and how students learn. TBL is increasingly used in a wide range of disciplines, from the health sciences to criminal justice to art history. While there are few reports of its use in information literacy instruction, librarians who have used it have found it to be transformative. Team-based learning was developed by Larry Michaelsen at the University of Oklahoma in the 1970s. It is distinct from problem-based learning or the informal use of groups.
Team-Based Learning strategies encourage students to take more responsibility for their learning, …

Shaken Or Stirred? Mixing Elements Of Writing Across The Curriculum (Wac) Into Library Instruction Sessions, Susan Avery, Hilary Bussell, Gina Hodnik
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Shaking up our instruction cocktails on a regular basis is advantageous, and tying what we do to campus initiatives makes the cocktail even better. Many universities include a Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program at their institution. WAC principles state that writing is learning and responsibility for writing should belong to all academic programs and cross all disciplines. Is it even possible, given the time constraints of one-shot instruction sessions, to include elements of WAC? This interactive presentation will demonstrate that, not only is it possible, it can significantly improve student learning, engagement, and participation; plus we'll help you find …

A Revamped Menu For Information Literacy Instruction: Catering To Newly Admitted Doctoral Students, Michelle T. Allen
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
A review of the library literature has uncovered very little research about effective instruction for newly admitted university doctoral students. Library instruction for these students is mainly focused on workshops for conducting a literature review. This assistance is relevant later in their studies, when they are publishing journal articles and writing a dissertation proposal, but doctoral students also have unique needs their first year, when they are adjusting to the program demands and preparing for comprehensive exams.
Faculty buy-in and enthusiasm were the most important factors for getting approval from my department in the spring of 2011 to develop an …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Background: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions cause disease and accumulate during aging, yet our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying their formation remains rudimentary. Guanine-quadruplex (GQ) DNA structures are associated with nuclear DNA instability in cancer; recent evidence indicates they can also form in mitochondrial nucleic acids, suggesting that these non-B DNA structures could be associated with mtDNA deletions. Currently, the multiple types of GQ sequences and their association with human mtDNA stability are unknown. Results: Here, we show an association between human mtDNA deletion breakpoint locations (sites where DNA ends rejoin after deletion of a section) and sequences with G-quadruplex …

First Proof Of Concept Of Sustainable Metabolite Production From High Solids Fermentation Of Lignocellulosic Biomass Using A Bacterial Co-Culture And Cycling Flush System, Wanying Yao, Sue E. Nokes
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
To improve the lignocellulose conversion for ABE in high solids fermentation, this study explored the feasibility of cycling the process through the cellulolytic or/and solventogenic phases via intermittent flushing of the fermentation media. Five different flushing strategies (varying medium ingredients, inoculum supplement and cycling through phases) were investigated. Flushing regularly throughout the cellulolytic phase is necessary because re-incubation at 65 °C significantly improved glucose availability by at least 6-fold. The solvents accumulation was increased by 4-fold using corn stover (3-fold using miscanthus) over that produced by flushing only through the solventogenic phase. In addition, cycling process was simplified by re-incubating …

We Put Down Our Guns And Picked Up Microphones: Community Radio As A Conduit For Community Development In Guatemala, Elizabeth Halpin
Latin American Studies ETDs
The intent of this thesis is to explore how community radio in Guatemala is used as a tool for community development. The concept of development I use is based off the idea that in order to build and maintain a sustainable quality of life there must be a solid community foundation for social capacity. Approaching radio as a conduit for change, I examine the various roles the radio takes on in order to enhance the overall quality of life by serving as (1) a channel for community knowledge; (2) a platform for indigenous rights; (3) a pillar for community solidarity; …

Why Evidence Matters: Examining The Knowledge And Perception Of Pre-Service Teachers, Stefanie Campbell
Why Evidence Matters: Examining The Knowledge And Perception Of Pre-Service Teachers, Stefanie Campbell
HIM 1990-2015
Evidence-based educational policymaking has become a global phenomenon (Wiseman, 2010). According to the Institute of Education Sciences, evidence-based education is "an integration of the professional wisdom and the best available empirical evidence on making decision about how to deliver instructions" (IES, US Department of Education, 2012). This suggests that best practice requires teachers to ensure that instructional strategies and programs implemented in their classroom have been studied in scientific experiments to determine their effectiveness. The general public, as well as practicing teachers, holds an assumption that educators have knowledge as to what is evidence-based education. However, this is not always …
Melatonin And Neurogenesis: A Comparative Study Of The Efficacy Of Melatonin, Its Precursors, And L-Dopa On Neural Stem Cell Metabolism In Human Adult Neurospheres, Omar Heriba
HIM 1990-2015
Human neurosphere stem cells offer promising potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Their well characterized multi-potency of differentiating into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes when exposed to the optimum exogenous growth factors make them an exciting area of study (38). Finding novel endogenous methods of modulating stem cell metabolism will allow for the safer treatment of various brain disorders (34). In this experiment, melatonin, N-acetylserotonin, L-tryptophan, and L-DOPA are added in three different concentrations to neurospheres suspended in HNSC/GBM media with less than optimal concentrations of exogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). The alamarBlue assay (resazurin) …
