Provided is a method of stimulating collagen synthesis and proteoglycan (lumican and keratocan) accumulation. Collagenase isolated keratocytes were cultured with or without insulin with or without ascorbate. Insulin stimulates the synthesis of collagen but does not affect the accumulation of lumican and keratocan. Insulin plus ascorbate, however, stimulates the synthesis of collagen and increased the accumulation of these proteoglycans. The accumulation of PGDS, a KSPG that does not interact with collagen, is not affected by ascorbate. Only the collagen made in the presence of ascorbate was pepsin resistant. EDB overrode the effects of ascorbate on pepsin resistance and proteoglycan accumulation.

Haemoglobin is an iron containing protein that transports oxygen throughout the body. When haemoglobin level is reduced below a cut-off point is called anaemia. Sri Lanka Demographic and Health Survey (SLDHS) was conducted in 2006/07 to monitor the prevalence of anaemia among children and non-pregnant women in Sri Lanka. Although the department of Census and Statistics published the descriptive analysis, multiple regression analysis was not carried out. Non-pregnant women with haemoglobin level less than 11mg/dl is categorized as anaemic condition. Overall prevalence of anaemia among non-pregnant women is 40.9% , which were at public health problem level. High inter-district disparity …

Comparing The Child-Rearing Goals Of Women In Taiwan And In Its Marriage-Based Immigrants’ Countries Of Origin, Shou-Lu Lee

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This study compares the child-rearing goals of women in Taiwan and in Taiwanese immigrant women’s countries of origin. The logit regression results clearly show distinct cultural variations in child-rearing goals in different countries, even when differences in socio-economic status are considered. Despite their complex historical links, Chinese women do not appear to be more similar to Taiwanese women than are Indonesian, or Vietnamese women in terms of child- rearing goals. These findings have implications for the socio-economic policies of the Taiwanese government and effective communication and instruction in schools. During the past decades, anticancer immunotherapy has evolved from a promising therapeutic option to a robust clinical reality. Many immunotherapeutic regimens are now approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for use in cancer patients, and many others are being investigated as standalone therapeutic interventions or combined with conventional treatments in clinical studies. Immunotherapies may be subdivided into "passive" and "active" based on their ability to engage the host immune system against cancer. Inductive Measurement Of Optically Hyperpolarized Phosphorous Donor Nuclei In An Isotopically Enriched Silicon-28 Crystal, P. Gumann, O. Patange, C. Ramanathan, H. Haas

We experimentally demonstrate the first inductive readout of optically hyperpolarized phosphorus-31 donor nuclear spins in an isotopically enriched silicon-28 crystal. The concentration of phosphorus donors in the crystal was 1.5×1015  cm−3, 3 orders of magnitude lower than has previously been detected via direct inductive detection. The signal-to-noise ratio measured in a single free induction decay from a 1  cm3 sample (≈1015 spins) was 113. By transferring the sample to an X-band ESR spectrometer, we were able to obtain a lower bound for the nuclear spin polarization at 1.7 K of ∼64%. The 31P-T2 measured with a Hahn echo sequence was …

Cuba and Vietnam, as survivors of the Cold War entered the post-Soviet Era with a myriad of economic woes. These eventually served as incentives for these countries to implement economic reforms that bolstered not only their economic performance, but also the survival of their respective states.
