Lighting Young Lights: The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program In Samoa, Nicholas Muccio
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program (JYSEP) is a program inspired by the Baha’i Faith offered all around the world to those between the ages of 12 and 15. Due to its widespread implementation, it is likely that the practice of the program is in accordance with the cultural norms of the society in which it is practiced. The present study examines influences that the JYSEP has had on Samoan culture, and the influences that Samoan culture has had on the JYSEP. It has been found that the major values of the program are not in agreement with the traditional …
La Cesárea Y El Parto Natural: Las Opiniones De Profesionales De La Salud En La Provincia De Buenos Aires / Cesarean Section And Natural Birth: The Opinions Of Health Provinces In The Province Of Buenos Aires, Jacqueline Chipkin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Introduction: The ways in which women of society give birth have the power to influence maternal-infant health and shape the economy of the healthcare system. Today, the rates of cesarean sections are increasing throughout the world. In Argentina, on average, more than 35% of pregnant women received cesarean sections in 2008, with large differences observed in the rates between the public and private health sectors. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established that healthcare systems should only employ a cesarean section if labor cannot progress safely. According to this standard, the organization estimates that cesarean sections should only be utilized …
“He Venido A Servir A Mi Gente” El Liceo Guacolda Y La Educación Intercultural En Chile / "I Have Come To Serve My People " The Liceo Guacolda And Intercultural Education In Chile, Jake Highleyman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The concept of intercultural education is present in many countries worldwide: it’s the idea of learning through the lenses of more than one culture, not just the Western or dominant one. In Chile, intercultural education is most commonly associated with the mapuche, the largest indigenous group in Chile. Since 1993, Chile has had a federal Bilingual Intercultural Education program (EIB). However, almost all of the implementation is left up to individual schools. The schools that do apply the program at a high school level only do so in an elective-based manner. That is, only students who elect to take a …
Financial Literacy And Financial Inclusion Of Women In Rural Rajasthan, Emily Levi-D'Ancona
Financial Literacy And Financial Inclusion Of Women In Rural Rajasthan, Emily Levi-D'Ancona
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Financial inclusion is an important step in development, as access to finances can help the poor build money and lift themselves out of poverty. In many parts of the developing world, and especially in India, microfinance is seen as a new approach to fighting poverty by bringing financial services, including low-interest loans, to the poor so that they can afford to start a business or invest and eventually gain self-sufficiency – in other words, a method of financial inclusion for the poor. However, microfinance in India cannot sufficiently reach the poor populations, especially those in rural India, and many of …
Exploring The Preservation Of Pastoralism And The Natural World In Western Mongolia , Josephine Brownell
Exploring The Preservation Of Pastoralism And The Natural World In Western Mongolia , Josephine Brownell
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
At a time when Mongolia is experiencing the intense effects of land degradation, human activity, and climate change, it is crucial that a new land management framework is developed with conservation in mind. Pastoralism’s unique relationship with the land serves as a method of protecting the natural world for the future. This study focuses on a pastoral community in Western Mongolia while considering a main research question: Is a herder’s historically deep connection with the land enough to protect the modern pastoral lifestyle in Mongolia for years to come? In answering this question, a review of related previous studies on …
An Examination Of Governmental And Nongovernmental Organizations In Nepal: A Partnership In Managing And Eliminating Waste In The Solukhumbu, Kristen Kelliher
An Examination Of Governmental And Nongovernmental Organizations In Nepal: A Partnership In Managing And Eliminating Waste In The Solukhumbu, Kristen Kelliher
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study, examined whether governmental organizations and nongovernmental organizations in Nepal can effectively work together on eliminating trash and establishing waste management systems in the Solukhumbu region. Historically, the overwhelming presence of discarded items has detracted from tourists’ enjoyment of the Himalayas as well as caused severe environmental ramifications. In the last twenty years however, NGOs and GOs have begun to work together to address these issues and this project looks at whether their working relationship is effective as they often have different objectives and methodology for reaching those goals. Conducting ten personal interviews, visiting GOs and NGOs in Sagarmatha …

Le Génocide Comme Défi À L’Éthique, Théoneste Nkeramihigo
Le Génocide Comme Défi À L’Éthique, Théoneste Nkeramihigo
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article proposes the genocide constitutes moral defiance for at least three evident reasons: by the suffering of the innocent, it shows the failure of the moral vision that establishes a causal link between pain suffered and evil committed, of ethics and redistribution. And finally, the genocide challenges ethics by spreading the mortal conflict of opposite moral systems meaning the genocide was perpetrated according to a particular moral code. The article examines an essential aspect of politics, the hostility towards finding the structure of reception of the genocidal drift. Then, how to imagine a moral code that effectively fights the …
La Fiction Du Génocide Ou Le Partage Des Émotions, Josias Semujanga
La Fiction Du Génocide Ou Le Partage Des Émotions, Josias Semujanga
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The goal of this study is to show that the fiction of genocide aims to share emotions between the narrator and the reader. It is possible to consider the narrator as representing the real reader and not only as the simple recipient written into the text. This is to say that the narrator is a part of the story but is also the reader’s counterpart as the real recipient, because both-- narrator and real reader-- are integrated in the imaginary world of the story. The role of the author is to construct intermediate mechanisms between the reader and the author. …
Matière Grise De Kivu Ruhorahoza : Un Nouveau Discours Filmique Pour Le Rwanda?, Charles J. Sugnet
Matière Grise De Kivu Ruhorahoza : Un Nouveau Discours Filmique Pour Le Rwanda?, Charles J. Sugnet
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Films like Hotel Rwanda, Sometimes in April, and Shooting Dogs have codified certain ways of representing the 1994 Rwandan genocide, with realist aesthetics, epic sweep, and aspirations to historical authenticity. A young Rwandan director, Kivu Ruhorahoza, has won two major prizes at the Tribeca Festival for his 2011 feature Grey Matter, a breakthrough film that is different from its predecessors in almost every respect. Ruhorahoza’s film is intimate, cosmopolitan, metaphorical, and avant-garde; it requires some effort to understand, yet it is extremely moving. On the 20th Anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda, it offers new ways of understanding the consequences …

Bernard Binlin Dadié, Le Père De La Littérature En Côte D’Ivoire, Claire L. Dehon
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
To fully understand today’s literature in the Ivory Coast, it is important to remember its first steps. A general overview of the main ideas and characteristics of Bernard B. Dadié’s literary works demonstrates the audacity and originality of the first Ivorian who wrote in French, and who helped impose French as the national language in the Ivory Coast.

The Effect Of Stress And Perceived Social Support On Job Satisfaction: A Comparison Between U.S Born And Foreign-Born Faculty, Lisa Owen
Dissertations
Research indicates that academic work-stress is a significant and growing problem for faculty members. General work-stress studies suggest that social support may buffer the negative impact of stress on faculty job satisfaction. To date, little research has been conducted in this area. Even fewer studies have examined the potential differences between U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty members regarding these variables. This quantitative, non-experimental multivariate study utilized a survey to assess academic stressors, perceived departmental social support, and job satisfaction at a large U.S. university. The surveyed institution consisted of 807 full-time faculty members. The three-week survey yielded a response rate of …
Cultural Mismatch In Pedagogy Workshops: Training Non-Native Teachers Communicative Language Teaching, Maria Luisa Spicer-Ecalante, Karin Dejonge-Kannan
Cultural Mismatch In Pedagogy Workshops: Training Non-Native Teachers Communicative Language Teaching, Maria Luisa Spicer-Ecalante, Karin Dejonge-Kannan
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
As a professional ideology, the Communicative Language Teaching approach (CLT) (Ellis, 1996, 2012; Lee & VanPatten, 2003) has been exported to non-Western contexts with varying degrees of success (e.g., Lewis & McCook, 2002; Li, 1998). The authors of this paper, both non-native speakers of English who have lived and taught in the USA for 20 years, discuss their experiences training teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) from China and Iraq/Kurdistan. Confirming previous research on the topic, they found teachers’ beliefs about teaching to be highly resistant to change, even in the face of evidence that negates them (Bax, …

Synthesizing The Music Integration Research To Explore Five Common Themes In Intermediate Elementary Classrooms, Alexandria Harkins
Synthesizing The Music Integration Research To Explore Five Common Themes In Intermediate Elementary Classrooms, Alexandria Harkins
HIM 1990-2015
Much scientific research has been conducted to examine the effects of music on the brain and abilities of people. The results have shown a positive correlation between music used in various ways and the abilities and skills of people, especially children. However, the use of music in the general intermediate classroom is lacking. After reviewing scientific research to provide a foundation for the study and synthesizing the five Music Integration Practices, two teachers were interviewed and observed on their use of music in their general intermediate classrooms. The interviews, observation checklists, and anecdotal notes taken by the researcher provide music …
The Association Of Attachment Style And Perceptions Of Caregiver Experience, Kandace Luther
The Association Of Attachment Style And Perceptions Of Caregiver Experience, Kandace Luther
HIM 1990-2015
This research examines caregiver experiences as they relate to attachment style. The overarching hypothesis is that perceptions of the caregiver role differ depending on the degree of avoidance and anxiousness in the caregiver's attachment style. Caregiver response was measured in the areas of filial obligation, work reduction, perceived control, caregiver burden, depressive symptomatology, and preparedness for caregiving. The final sample consisted of 150 caregivers who identified as the primary caregiver for a parent over the age of 65. This sample was recruited using Mechanical Turk, an online survey distribution tool. The survey was created online with Qualtrics software. Data were …
The Search For Bose-Einstein Condensation Of Excitons In Cu2o: Exciton-Auger Recombination Versus Biexciton Formation, James P. Wolfe, Joon I. Jang
The Search For Bose-Einstein Condensation Of Excitons In Cu2o: Exciton-Auger Recombination Versus Biexciton Formation, James P. Wolfe, Joon I. Jang
Physics, Applied Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship
Excitons in high-purity crystals of Cu2O undergo a density-dependent lifetime that opposes Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This rapid decay rate of excitons at a density n has generally been attributed to Auger recombination having the form dn/dt = -An(2), where A is an exciton-Auger constant. Various measurements of A, however, have reported values that are orders-of-magnitude larger than the existing theory. In response to this conundrum, recent work has suggested that excitons bind into excitonic molecules, or biexcitons, which are short-lived and expected to be optically inactive. Of particular interest is the case of excitons confined to a parabolic strain well-a …
