Admission Of Guilt: Sinking Teeth Into The Sec's Sweetheart Deals, Larissa Lee Dec 2014

Admission Of Guilt: Sinking Teeth Into The Sec's Sweetheart Deals, Larissa Lee

Global Markets Law Journal

Throughout its existence, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has allowed defendants to settle cases without admitting to the allegations of wrongdoing. This “neither admit nor deny” policy has received heavy criticism by judges, Congress, and the public, especially in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. On June 18, 2013, SEC Chairman Mary Jo White announced the agency’s intention to require admissions of guilt in certain cases. While Chairman White did not articulate a clear standard of when admissions would be required, she did say that the agency would focus on the egregiousness of the defendant’s conduct and the …

Nucleation At The Contact Line Observed On Nanotextured Surfaces, C W. Gurganus, J. C. Charnawskas, A. B. Kostinski, R. A. Shaw

Department of Physics Publications

It has been conjectured that roughness plays a role in surface nucleation, the tendency for freezing to begin preferentially at the liquid-gas interface. Using high speed imaging, we sought evidence for freezing at the contact line on catalyst substrates with imposed characteristic length scales (texture). Length scales consistent with the critical nucleus size and with δ∼τ/σ, where τ is a relevant line tension and σ is the surface tension, range from nanometers to micrometers. It is found that nanoscale texture causes a shift in the nucleation of ice in supercooled water to the three-phase contact line, while microscale texture does …

The Effects Of Vocabulary Instruction On Bilingual Students' Lexico-Semantic Acquisition In English-Medium Contexts: A Systematic Analysis, Alain Bengochea Dec 2014

The Synthesis Of Artistic Elements In Works For Theatrical Percussion, Karlyn Renee Mason

Open Access Dissertations

The extra-musical artistic elements in three works for theatrical percussion are examined, analyzed, and compared with one another. The pieces that are discussed include Songs I-IX by Stuart Saunders Smith, Dressur by Mauricio Kagel, and ?Corporel by Vinko Globokar. A brief discussion of each composer's life and music is followed by an in-depth analysis of extra-musical artistic elements, including vocalizations, movement, and other dramatic elements. This study examines the extra-musical artistic elements that are included in each piece and how they relate to the piece as a whole, including analysis of notation and interpretation.

Illusionism: Making The Problem Of Hallucinations Disappear, Rami El Ali Dec 2014

Illusionism: Making The Problem Of Hallucinations Disappear, Rami El Ali

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation contributes to a central and ongoing debate in the philosophy of perception concerning the fundamental nature of perceptual states. Such states include cases like seeing, hearing, or tasting, as well as cases of merely seeming to see, hear, or taste. A central question concerning these states arises in light of misperceptual phenomena. While a commonsensical picture of perceptual states construes them as simply relating us to the external and mind independent world’s objects, some misperceptual cases suggest that these states fall short of such world contact. The result is that perceptual states are either thought to fundamentally consist …

Mechanisms Of Infrared Neural Stimulation, Vicente Lumbreras Cruz Dec 2014

Mechanisms Of Infrared Neural Stimulation, Vicente Lumbreras Cruz

Open Access Dissertations

Cochlear implants are currently the most effective solution for profound sensorineural hearing loss, and vestibular prostheses are under development to treat bilateral vestibulopathies. Electrical current spread in these neuroprostheses limits channel independence, and in some cases may impair device performance. In comparison to conventional electrical stimulation, optical stimuli that are spatially confined may result in a significant functional improvement. Pulsed infrared radiation (IR) allows direct stimulation of tissue without genetic or pharmacological manipulation, and has been shown to excite neurons. This study analyzes if pulsed IR (λ = 1863 nm) elicits intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) transients in cultured neonatal rat spiral …

Responsibility To Protect (R2p), The Responsibility Of The International Community To Protect Syrian Citizens, Ghuna Bdiwi Dec 2014

Responsibility To Protect (R2p), The Responsibility Of The International Community To Protect Syrian Citizens, Ghuna Bdiwi

LLM Theses

The responsibility to protect (R2P) doctrine allows the international community to intervene for humanitarian purposes in events of massive violations of human rights. However, the legality of humanitarian intervention has received considerable critical attention because of its direct conflict with two fundamental norms in international law: the prohibition of the use of force, and the principle of state sovereignty. In Syria, mass atrocity crimes are escalating on a daily basis. Until now, international efforts have failed to find a peaceful formula to stop the crisis. International law allows the Security Council to authorize humanitarian intervention under the power of Chapter …

Describing Regional Interdependence For A Patient With Lateral Epicondylalgia Managed With Postural Training And Iontophoresis: A Case Report, Matthew Starkey

Case Report Posters

Background: Lateral epicondylalgia describes a condition where pain and tenderness are present in the wrist extensors, most commonly from repetitive motion activities. Current research suggests the cause is attributed to tissue degeneration due to repetitive stress to the wrist extensors. A concept known as regional interdependence may also influence lateral epicondylalgia. Regional interdependence describes a condition where impairments are present in proximal or distal joint segments and contribute or cause pain to the primary region reported by the patient. Iontophoresis, a common intervention utilized for treating lateral epicondylalgia, is intervention that uses electrical current to drive ionic drugs into the …

Polynomials With Prescribed Bad Primes, David P. Roberts Dec 2014

Polynomials With Prescribed Bad Primes, David P. Roberts

Mathematics Publications

We tabulate polynomials in ℚ[t] with a given factorization partition, bad reduction entirely within a given set of primes, and satisfying auxiliary conditions associated to 0, 1, and ∞. We explain how these polynomials are of particular interest because of their role in the construction of nonsolvable number fields of arbitrarily large degree and bounded ramification.

The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett

Anthropology Publications

As educators, we owe it to our students to enable them to transgress structural impediments and to create sustainable alternatives from the margins of the industrial agro-food system. Policies of assimilation, allotment, and enclosure of the Native American commons and ecosystems brought devastation to Native cultures. Dependence on government commodities replaced Native food sovereignty and contributed to malnutrition, obesity, and diabetes as diets responded to corporately produced and processed foods. Young people often feel disempowered and ask how they might confront such formidable forces as corporate control of our agro-food system, destruction of natural resources, and threats to human health. …

The Relationship Between Pain Sensitivity And Motor Adaptations, Irina Fedulow, Katherine S. Rudolph Dec 2014

The Relationship Between Pain Sensitivity And Motor Adaptations, Irina Fedulow, Katherine S. Rudolph

Research Report Papers

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between measures of central sensitization and CPM and how they impact motor adaptations in individuals without chronic pain conditions. To conduct this research, we decided to incorporate the “broken escalator phenomenon,” which is the unusual feeling that occurs when an individual steps onto an escalator or moving walkway that is broken and therefore not moving. The body responds with an anticipatory response that includes increased trunk sway and increased forward speed. The body adapts to the stationary walkway by reducing trunk sway and speed. Following that period of adaptation, if …

Over-Expression Of Copper/Zinc Superoxide Dismutase In The Median Preoptic Nucleus Attenuates Chronic Angiotensin Ii-Induced Hypertension In The Rat., John P. Collister, Mitch Bellrichard, Donna Drebes, David Nahey, Jun Tian, Matthew C. Zimmerman Dec 2014

Over-Expression Of Copper/Zinc Superoxide Dismutase In The Median Preoptic Nucleus Attenuates Chronic Angiotensin Ii-Induced Hypertension In The Rat., John P. Collister, Mitch Bellrichard, Donna Drebes, David Nahey, Jun Tian, Matthew C. Zimmerman

Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

The brain senses circulating levels of angiotensin II (AngII) via circumventricular organs, such as the subfornical organ (SFO), and is thought to adjust sympathetic nervous system output accordingly via this neuro-hormonal communication. However, the cellular signaling mechanisms involved in these communications remain to be fully understood. Previous lesion studies of either the SFO, or the downstream median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) have shown a diminution of the hypertensive effects of chronic AngII, without providing a clear explanation as to the intracellular signaling pathway(s) involved. Additional studies have reported that over-expressing copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), an intracellular superoxide (O2·-) scavenging enzyme, in …
