Some Unique Monte Carlo Molecular Simulation Algorithms And Their Applications, William Smith Dec 2014

Some Unique Monte Carlo Molecular Simulation Algorithms And Their Applications, William Smith

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

The development of molecular simulation algorithms for predicting the thermodynamic properties of classical fluids and their mixtures began over 50 years ago. An ultimate goal is to predict system properties at both the macroscopic and molecular levels with the minimal need for experimental data. Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) are the two main approaches, both based on specifying an underlying mathematical model for the molecular interactions (force fields). MD has the advantage that it can calculate some thermodynamic properties and can also calculate transport properties and study systems away from equilibrium. Since its implementation is relatively straightforward, many …

Middle To Late Holocene Vegetation Shifts In The Nw Transylvanian Lowlands (Romania), Roxana Grindean, Ioan Tanţău, Sorina Fărcaş, Andrei Panait

Studia UBB Geologia

The Iaz peat bog, located in northwestern Transylvania at 300 m a.s.l., was cored to study the Middle to Late Holocene vegetation shifts in the area. The pollen record is supported by seven 14C datings. The base of the sequence starts in the Middle Holocene, when the outer woodlands were dominated by Corylus avellana together with other components of the Quercetum mixtum. The local establishment of Carpinus betulus occurred at 5700 cal. yr BP with maximum values at around 4900 cal. yr BP. At 4800 cal. yr BP, Fagus sylvatica became locally established and expanded, possibly as a …

Grateful Patient Sends Heartfelt Letter, Generous Gift To Jefferson

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

In June 2008, John Kessler was just shy of his 56th birthday – and had been experiencing several days of severe pain from a familiar source: kidney stones. He remembers that it was Friday the 13th when he and his wife, Mary, made the decision to drive from their home in Blackwood, New Jersey, to the Emergency Room at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

He says that by the time he had a CT scan, the stones seemed to have become lodged, reducing the intensity of his pain. But he and wife soon received shocking news: the scan showed that John …

Reneé joined Jefferson’s Department of Surgery in 1996, working in the Gibbon Building until the surgical practices came together in the MOB in 2001. She has been …

Rcts: ‘Gold Standard’ For Medical Research Targets Improved Outcomes Dec 2014

Rcts: ‘Gold Standard’ For Medical Research Targets Improved Outcomes

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

For decades, prospective randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have been the “gold standard” for medical research. These studies randomly assign patients to one of two groups: half receive the standard treatment, and half undergo the experimental approach. As Associate Professor of Surgery Harish Lavu, MD, FACS, explains, randomly assigning patients helps eliminate even subconscious bias on the part of researchers. Dr. Lavu notes that while there is widespread agreement that RCTs are the best way to conduct research, these studies are complex and often costly. Funding often comes from institutional sources, government sponsored research grants, philanthropic organizations, or pharmaceutical companies.

Jefferson Combats Deadliest Form Of Skin Cancer Dec 2014

Jefferson Combats Deadliest Form Of Skin Cancer

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

When people think of skin cancer, they often think of basal cell and squamous cell cancers. But the deadliest form is melanoma.

As surgical oncologist Adam Berger, MD, FACS, explains, melanoma comes from a different type of cell in the skin. Unlike basal cell and squamous cell cancers, which usually do not spread, melanoma is much more aggressive. In fact, while melanoma accounts for less than 2 percent of skin cancer cases, it causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths.

In addition to melanoma excisions (surgical removal of lesions), Dr. Berger performs a diagnostic procedure known as a sentinel …

Progress with the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Most of us have been following the news concerning the ACA. The first open enrollment period closed on March 31, 2014. A late surge pushed the number of enrollees through the individual marketplaces to about 8 million, which exceeded Congressional Budget Office (CBO) expectations. The coverage gains mandated for young adults have decremented their number without health insurance by between 1 and 3 million. All health care plans must now meet comprehensive benefits standards (bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels), and over 28 states and D.C. are moving forward on Medicaid expansion.

“Patients with extensive acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the legs provide an excellent example of why effective medical-surgical collaboration is so important.

“These patients typically benefit from emergency catheter-directed thrombolysis, an endovascular procedure performed by vascular surgeons. Subsequent medical management is directed toward preventing re-thrombosis and preventing the long-term complications of DVT. At the Jefferson Vascular Center, vascular medicine specialists initiate and transition that care, as well as provide long-term management of blood thinners and other medical measures.

“Across vascular diseases and conditions, Jefferson’s vascular medicine specialists provide many outpatient services. In addition to the excellent care they afford, …

Brief Home-Based Data Collection Of Low Frequency Behaviors, Mindy Scheithauer, Nathan A. Call, Joanna Lomas Mevers, Jessica P. Alvarez, Faith Cawthon, Kelly Autry, Dana Bamford

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Data-based decision making, an important component of positive behavior support, can be difficult in brief in-home therapy due to the limited amount of time a therapist has to directly observe the child. This difficulty is exacerbated when problem behavior occurs infrequently. When a therapist cannot reliably observe problem behavior, it is often necessary to rely on parental report. The current study evaluated three approaches for parental report of low frequency problem behavior: antecedent-behavior-consequence records, incident data, and interview. Each method was analyzed with clients in home-based therapy with 2-hour weekly appointments. All clients exhibited low-frequency (i.e., less than daily) and …

Use Of A Dvd-Based Strength Training Program By Breast Cancer Survivors In The Home Setting, Ashley Falcon

Open Access Dissertations

Background: Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common type of cancer diagnosed among women in the United States. Advances in cancer detection and treatment have led to improved survival, and focus has shifted towards addressing the adverse physiological and psychological effects associated with BCa and its treatments. Evidence supports regular physical activity (PA) as an effective means of managing the negative side effects of BCa treatments and improving health-related quality of life (QOL). Strength training is of particular importance for BCa survivors who experience treatment-related functional limitations. Despite this fact, PA levels among BCa survivors are below those recommended for …

Exploring Fair Trade Yerba Mate Networks In Misiones, Argentina, Franklin Smith

Open Access Theses

This thesis explores the recent growth of Fair Trade yerba mate networks in Misiones, Argentina. It is a qualitative descriptive study, researching an area presently untouched by academic scholarship. The investigation first offers a historical background of production practices and labor relations within the yerba mate sector. It also examines various theoretical considerations that both problematize and support Fair Trade commodities. A commodity chain approach is used to understand the different value-adding processes that yerba mate is exposed to as it moves along nodes of harvesting, drying, milling, distribution, and consumption. Results are based on a month-long study of three …
