Structure-Based Drug Design And Synthesis Of Anti-Infective And Anticancer Agents, Narendran Gummudipundi Dayanandan Dec 2014

Structure-Based Drug Design And Synthesis Of Anti-Infective And Anticancer Agents, Narendran Gummudipundi Dayanandan

Doctoral Dissertations

Resistance to antibiotics is on the rise at an alarming pace. The problem is exacerbated by the lack of new class of therapeutic agents and targets. Modes of resistance include alteration of drug target, modification of ligand, and reduction of the intracellular concentration of drug. Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is a validated drug target for the treatment of infectious diseases and cancer. The binding of ligands to DHFR inhibits the downstream folate pathway that is vital for purine and thymidylate synthesis. Trimethoprim (TMP), a clinically used antifolate exhibits resistance in both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In this thesis, methods have been …

Modeling The Snow Surface Temperature With A One-Layer Energy Balance Snowmelt Model, J. You, David G. Tarboton, C. H. Luce Dec 2014

Modeling The Snow Surface Temperature With A One-Layer Energy Balance Snowmelt Model, J. You, David G. Tarboton, C. H. Luce

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Snow surface temperature is a key control on and result of dynamically coupled energy exchanges at the snow surface. The snow surface temperature is the result of the balance between external forcing (incoming radiation) and energy exchanges above the surface that depend on surface temperature (outgoing longwave radiation and turbulent fluxes) and the transport of energy into the snow by conduction and meltwater influx. Because of the strong insulating properties of snow, thermal gradients in snow packs are large and nonlinear, a fact that has led many to advocate multiple layer snowmelt models over single layer models. In an effort …

Developmental And Cultural Perspectives On Children’S Postoperative Pain Management At Home, Brooke N. Jenkins, Michelle A. Fortier Dec 2014

Developmental And Cultural Perspectives On Children’S Postoperative Pain Management At Home, Brooke N. Jenkins, Michelle A. Fortier

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Outpatient surgery is extremely common in children, and approximately 4 million children experience significant pain after surgery in the USA each year. Management of children's postoperative pain in the home setting is suboptimal and is impacted by characteristics of children and parents, as well as the larger family and cultural context. In particular, developmental status of the child, parental beliefs regarding pain expression and analgesic use in children, cultural values and language barriers can affect management of children's postoperative pain. Targeting the myriad barriers to children's pain management by capitalizing upon the use of tailored interventions may help bridge the …

A Study On The Relationships Of Professional Development, Teacher Working Conditions And Job Satisfaction While Controlling For Years Of Teaching Experience And Grade Level Taught, Daniel W. Silvia Dec 2014

A Study On The Relationships Of Professional Development, Teacher Working Conditions And Job Satisfaction While Controlling For Years Of Teaching Experience And Grade Level Taught, Daniel W. Silvia

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

“Over the next ten years, 1.6 million teachers will retire, and 1.6 million new teachers will be needed to take their place. This poses both an enormous challenge and an extraordinary opportunity for our education system: “if we succeed in recruiting, preparing, and retaining great teaching talent, we can transform public education in this country and finally begin to deliver an excellent education for every child” (Duncan, 2011, pg. 1). Indeed, teacher preparation and professional development is an extremely important issue facing our educational system today. There is a great deal of research that supports the idea that the most …

Diffractive Optical Elements With A Large Angle Of Operation Recorded In Acrylamide Based Photopolymer On Flexible Substrates, Hoda Akbari, Izabela Naydenova, Lina Persechini, Sean Garner, Pat Cimo, Suzanne Martin

Articles

A holographic device characterised by a large angular range of operation is under development. The aim of this study is to increase the angular working range of the diffractive lens by stacking three layers of high efficiency optical elements on top of each other so that light is collected (and focussed) from a broader range of angles. The angular range of each individual lens element is important, and work has already been done in an acrylamide-based photosensitive polymer to broaden the angular range of individual elements using holographic recording at a low spatial frequency. This paper reports new results on the …

Purpose and Aims. There is limited information about outcomes of care, resource utilization, and associated costs for patients who receive acupuncture in integrative health settings. The purpose of this study was to address this gap through the following aims: To examine: (1) changes in patient pain levels pre/post acupuncture treatments; (2) relationships between receiving acupuncture treatments (number of treatments, length of time, select demographic factors, (age, gender), pain level pre and post acupuncture treatments; (3) relationships between number of treatments, length of time, age, gender, pain level (pre/post acupuncture treatments) and provider visits (pre/post acupuncture treatments); and (4) relationship between …

Lack Of Medicaid Funding For Occupational Therapy Serving The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population Ages 0-5 Years, Nadia Yala Dec 2014

Lack Of Medicaid Funding For Occupational Therapy Serving The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population Ages 0-5 Years, Nadia Yala

Honors Theses

The prevalence of autism in the United States is currently 1 in 68 children (Autism Alliance of Michigan, 2014). This is considered an epidemic. There are a variety of treatments available in the state of Michigan for children with autism, such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and applied behavior analysis (ABA). Effective April 1st, 2013, Michigan increased their funding cap for ABA therapy for treating children with autism. However, there is a lack of knowledge within the community and amongst professionals in regards to the critical treatment occupational therapy practitioners provide and as a result, there …

Graduate Teaching Assistants: Responding To The Challenges Of Internationalisation, Jennie Winter, Rebecca Turner, Sharon Gedye, Patricia Nash, Vivien Grant Dec 2014

Graduate Teaching Assistants: Responding To The Challenges Of Internationalisation, Jennie Winter, Rebecca Turner, Sharon Gedye, Patricia Nash, Vivien Grant

Plymouth Institute of Education

The last decade has seen intensification in moves to professionalise the practice of university teaching, including graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). It has also seen significant growth in terms of the internationalisation of the postgraduate student body and changing expectations around doctoral training. These transformations have implications for the construction, delivery, and management of educational training for this group, yet little contemporary research exists investigating the adaptability of academic development and institutions to such change. This paper reports empirical research exploring these issues using a UK-based case study. The research investigated the international doctoral students’ experience of a teaching course and …

The Playground Of The East, Jean Harlan Dec 2014

The Playground Of The East, Jean Harlan

I lay down on the beach and looked dreamily away to where the deep blue of the sky blended to meet the blue-green of the ocean. The sun shone brightly on the golden sand about me while the brightly colored sea shells came and went with the ocean waves. The whole shore seemed secluded, but by noon it would be jammed with people bathing or basking in the sun. The shore would be a mass of red, yellow, blue, orange, green, and purple umbrellas

War In My Lifetime, Jeanne Sutton

Manuscripts

The war has been going on for almost two years now. Think of it! Two years of the worry, heartache, tears, last-minute smiles, last-time kisses, letters, day and night news broadcasts, furlough dates, rationing, last-minute shoe rush - a million things which happen to a girl only in war time.

To Save Our Soles, Marjorie Phillips Dec 2014

To Save Our Soles, Marjorie Phillips

Manuscripts

Americans in 1943 are doing a number of things that we never did before and, in all probability, will never do again. The world is changing rapidly, adjusting itself to the necessities of a nation at war. We are beginning to feel, for the first time, the insidious fingers of the international conflict. There is a seriousness now behind the American smile, a strength, a realization of what this war means.

Dust, Mary G. French Dec 2014

Dust, Mary G. French

Manuscripts

It was August 21, 1936, in the days when Kansas was a part of our country known as the Dust Bowl. The sun shone down on a parched and thirsty earth. The lawn, which should have been a beautiful green velvet carpet, was instead an ugly brown expanse of dead grass whose roots had long ago given up the struggle to reach life-giving moisture. Where no vegetation grew, the ground was cracked and broken. The trees, prematurely brown, swayed lazily in a hot breeze which came drifting in from the west. Birds, mostly boisterous bluejays, friendly robins, twittering sparrows, and …

Complex Wally, Mary Cory Dec 2014

Complex Wally, Mary Cory

Manuscripts

I was told at lunch by one of my high school friends that Wally wanted to see me at two minutes after two on the second floor bridge. That was Wally all right, always doing something peculiar and very exact. I was on my way to the bridge at two, and as I rounded the corner of it, I saw that the "Remarkable" was already there. He was standing tall and gangly in front of the window looking down at the street and appearing in a rather desolate and serious mood.

Garden Of Eden, Ken Skelton Dec 2014

Garden Of Eden, Ken Skelton

The large wrought iron gates were thrown open to admit the throngs of people of which we were a part. Supporting the gates were square, Substantial looking red brick posts; winding back through the posts was a narrow macadam road, which was last among the beautiful slopes. On one side stretched row upon row of small, heavily laden apple trees. The coloring was so perfect and the spacing so uniform that it seemed like an.overdone picture.
