Understading "International": Faculty Perspectives On Study Abroad And Global Studies Education, Ethan Ingram
ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative
Little research has been devoted to critiques of study abroad programming coming from faculty perspectives. This research examines faculty critiques of study abroad arising from proposed changes in general studies education that would allow students to substitute study abroad for "global studies" coursework that specifically covers topics related to non-Western societies. While faculty are generally supportive of study abroad, opposition to this proposed policy change highlight questions of study abroad's role in higher education.

The Underlying Current: Climate Change And The Fall Of Rome, Matthew Thomas Finnie
The Underlying Current: Climate Change And The Fall Of Rome, Matthew Thomas Finnie
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Although historians have debated the various causes of the fall of the Roman Empire for centuries, scholars did not consider the impact of environmental change until the early twentieth century. Initially, environmental historians believed that agricultural decline resultant from soil erosion and deforestation played a dominant role; however, scientific and historical evidence can now be utilized to demonstrate that these two factors were much less prevalent during the third through fifth centuries than they had been during the prosperous Pax Romana. In contrast, recent climatological studies, most notably dendrochronological sequences, have established that a combination of cooling and desertification plagued …

This paper examines ways in which Feeding Our Communities Partners (FOCP) can productively expand on its current work to alleviate hunger in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. This report contains a literature review addressing hunger and food insecurity, a needs assessment of hunger in Blue Earth County, case studies of existing programs, and qualitative interviews with professionals who work with the youth in these programs. We conclude by recommending three potential ways that FOCP can expand their current programs to address hunger among school-aged youth in Blue Earth County.
Reproductive Parameters Of Two Coastal Pelagic Fishes Off Southeast Florida: Blackfin Tuna Thunnus Atlanticus And Little Tunny Euthynnus Alletteratus, Sonia Ahrabi-Nejad
Reproductive Parameters Of Two Coastal Pelagic Fishes Off Southeast Florida: Blackfin Tuna Thunnus Atlanticus And Little Tunny Euthynnus Alletteratus, Sonia Ahrabi-Nejad
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The ability to manage a fish stock relies on an understanding of life history characteristics and basic biology of the species. Numerous age-growth studies are facilitated by the relative ease of ageing fishes through hard-part analyses. Determining reproductive parameters for fish populations is equally important for stock assessments and management, and histological examination of gonads provides the most accurate determination of fecundity and spawning periods. Coastal pelagic fishes are often targeted commercially and recreationally due to their easy access by private vessels. However, there are few studies researching the biology and reproduction of recreational fishes in the waters of Southeastern …

A Diagram on Birds Absract
This feature-length screenplay examines the lives of three women who must redefine success after losing a member of their family. When Regina Shipman, a somewhat lonely newspaper editor, loses her brother, she becomes determined to make life normal again. But Regina's widowed sister-in-law Kate throws a wrench in the plan with her new, wild lifestyle. This leaves Addie, a 13-year-old caught up in the confusion of adolescence, no choice but to move in with the stern, level-headed Regina. A Diagram on Birds draws on third-wave feminist philosophies of home and family, and asks what exactly …

Proprioception And Developmental Motor Training: A New Treatment For Chronic-Phase Stroke Patients
Proprioception And Developmental Motor Training: A New Treatment For Chronic-Phase Stroke Patients
Dissertations
With stroke occurrence increasing, along with survival rate, it is imperative to find ways of treating the chronic-phase of stroke. The purpose of this study was to determine if either or both of two interventions, or their combination, could improve functional performance in patients at least four years post-stroke. One intervention was resistance strength training while the other consisted of neurodevelopmental activities that parallel those used with developing children. Six participants, four male and two female, ranging in age from 23 to 60 (M age 44.5), were randomly assigned to one of the interventions. Participants ranged in stroke types and …

The Impact Of Changing Surface Ocean Conditions On The Dissolution Of Aerosol Iron, Matthew Fishwick, Peter Sedwick, Maeve Lohan, Pau Worsfold, Kristen N. Buck, Thomas Church, Simon Ussher

The proportion of aerosol iron (Fe) that dissolves in seawater varies greatly and is dependent on aerosol composition and the physicochemical conditions of seawater, which may change depending on location or be altered by global environmental change. Aerosol and surface seawater samples were collected in the Sargasso Sea and used to investigate the impact of these changing conditions on aerosol Fe dissolution in seawater. Our data show that seawater temperature, pH, and oxygen concentration, within the range of current and projected future values, had no significant effect on the dissolution of aerosol Fe. However, the source and composition of aerosols …

Cost-Effective Algorithms For Deployment And Sensing In Mobile Sensor Networks, Yuan Song
Cost-Effective Algorithms For Deployment And Sensing In Mobile Sensor Networks, Yuan Song
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, we propose cost-effective algorithms for deploying mobile sensors in traditional mobile sensor networks and scheduling mobile phone opportunistic sensing in mobile phone based sensor networks. Traditional sensor nodes must be deployed appropriately to successfully accomplish their sensing tasks. When the region of interest is unknown or hostile, manual deployment is infeasible. For such scenarios, how to employ sensor mobility to achieve cost-effective self-deployment is an interesting yet underexplored problem. While mobile phones are naturally sensor nodes, they differ from traditional sensor nodes in that they move along with their owners and only perform sensing tasks in an …
