Freshwater Transitions And The Evolution Of Osmoregulation In The Alewife, Jonathan P. Velotta Dec 2014

Freshwater Transitions And The Evolution Of Osmoregulation In The Alewife, Jonathan P. Velotta

Doctoral Dissertations

The transition from seawater to freshwater is deeply rooted in the evolutionary history of animals, initiating the radiation and speciation of many taxa. However, crossing the boundary into freshwater from the sea represents a considerable physiological challenge for animals that maintain a near constant internal ion concentration. Because seawater and freshwater differ strongly in solute concentration, the transition into freshwater must involve the evolution of ion and water balance; yet, we have a limited understanding of the physiological modifications that facilitate this transition. Here, I investigate the evolution of the osmoregulatory system upon transition to freshwater using populations of an …

Mythological Rewriting: New Perspectives On Algeria's Postcolonial History, Elena Telegina Dec 2014

Mythological Rewriting: New Perspectives On Algeria's Postcolonial History, Elena Telegina

Doctoral Dissertations

Mythological Rewriting: New Perspectives on Algeria’s Postcolonial History.

Elena Telegina, Ph.D

University of Connecticut [2014]

Abstract

Algerian history, falsified and distorted by different Algerian regimes, obscured the nature of many contemporary problems, while creating a climate of confusion about the present and anxiety about the future. Beneath Algeria’s relative calm during the uprisings of the “Arab Spring”, violence and social dissociation, continue to threaten the society, showing that deep-seated historical conflicts in Algeria remain unsolved.

While historians and political scientists attempt to clarify the contemporary situation from a scientific perspective, Francophone Algerian novelists have addressed these issues by drawing on …

Racial Justice Study: An Examination Of Ticket Citations In The City Of Mankato, Minnesota, Meagan Hammers, C. J. Hays, Hannah Laniado Dec 2014

Racial Justice Study: An Examination Of Ticket Citations In The City Of Mankato, Minnesota, Meagan Hammers, C. J. Hays, Hannah Laniado

Public Sociology Publications and Projects

This study examines if there is racial disparity in policing in the city of Mankato, Minnesota by examining all traffic ticket citations given for a six-month period in 2014. The authors created a data set and examined statistical relationships between the observed race of those receiving tickets and the types of tickets received. This study discovered statistically significant findings of over policing of minorities; while minorities represent roughly ten percent the population in Mankato, they make up approximately 22% of the population cited. Further, minorities were about three times more likely than whites to receive a ticket for administrative offenses, …

Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient After A Subacromial Decompression With Acromioplasty And Bursectomy: A Case Report, Brianne Landholt Dec 2014

Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient After A Subacromial Decompression With Acromioplasty And Bursectomy: A Case Report, Brianne Landholt

Case Report Papers

Background: Subacromial impingement results from repetitive trauma to structures underneath the subacromial arch leading to a decrease in the subacromial space, impingement of soft tissue, and ultimately a decrease in functional abilities. Conservative treatment includes physical therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and corticosteriod injections. If improvements are not observed, there is a surgical option of a subacromial decompression (SAD). Conclusive evidence supporting surgery over conservative measures does not exist1. Literature is lacking regarding SAD without rotator cuff (RTC) repair and performing SAD with both an acromioplasty and bursectomy. Therefore, the purpose of this case report was to investigate the functional outcomes …

Promoting Citizenship Education With Structured Controversy In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar Dec 2014

Promoting Citizenship Education With Structured Controversy In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar

Other Presentations

Indonesian democracy is rich in traditions, religions, cultures, and ethnic languages. To keep the nation unified with diversity, Indonesia must prepare its citizens with skills of perspective taking, constructive debate, and evidence-based reasoning to engage in a robust democracy. Historically, a rigorous study of the Liberal Arts held promise for creating a strong democracy and a well-educated citizenry. Currently, politicization of the term “Liberal Arts” attracts unjustifiable criticism and diverts attention away from a serious comprehensive study of literature, science, the arts, history, and mathematics. Narrowness in education of students toward technical and professional degrees appears not to align with …

Some Observations On Scientific Epistemology With Applications To Conflict Resolution And Constructive Controversy, Judith Puncochar, Don Faust Dec 2014

Some Observations On Scientific Epistemology With Applications To Conflict Resolution And Constructive Controversy, Judith Puncochar, Don Faust

Other Presentations

An overview, by Judy and Don (published in 2013 in the BULLETIN OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC):

Explorationism is a perspective wherein all of our knowledge is (so far) less than certain, and naturally would come equipped with a base logic entailing machinery for representing and processing evidential knowledge. One such base logic is Evidence Logic, which strives to deal with the phenomenon of the gradational presence of both confirmatory and refutatory evidence. From this perspective, we will address questions surrounding sociological problem areas that we see as deeply infused with substantial epistemological factors. By defining a framework as any theory, …

Measuring Changes In Knowledge And Attitudes Of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Providers After Receiving An Educational Intervention About The Value Of Human Milk In The Preterm Infant, Frances E. Smith

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Executive Summary Measuring Changes in Knowledge and Attitudes of NICU Providers after Receiving an Educational Intervention about the Value of Human Milk in the Preterm Infant Problem Identification Human milk is proven to decrease morbidities and mortality in extremely low birth weight neonates. Health care providers must approach the mothers of these infants and explain the need for own mother's milk or consent for the use of donor milk in these infants. Providers may lack the knowledge about the importance of human milk in NICU infants, or may hold negative attitudes about human milk's contribution to the health of these …
