Ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) cable has been extensively used for distribution of power. The insulation of cable should withstand electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical stresses during its operation. It is imperative to measure the data providing dielectric strength of EPR cable for these stresses. Significant improvements on the quality of insulation have been progressing for better performance of cable under these stresses. This study deals with ac voltage stress imposed on the cable. The electrical breakdown strength of 5kV EPR cable under ac voltage has been measured by constructing a suitable test set in Mississippi State University High Voltage Lab.

Mottled ducks (Anas fulvigula) are endemic to Gulf Coastal United States and Mexico. Birds from Florida, Louisiana, and Texas were released in coastal South Carolina from 1975-1983, and banding data suggest an expanding South Carolina population. We radio-marked 116 females in August 2010-2011 in the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto (ACE) Rivers Basin and used radio telemetry to study habitat selection, searched for nests of non-radiomarked females, and conducted indicated breeding pair surveys of mottled ducks at various wetlands. Overall, radiomarked mottled duck females selected managed wetland impoundments, wetlands containing planted corn, and brackish wetlands. Overall nest success of 42 nests …

Code decay is a gradual process that negatively impacts the quality of a software system. Developers need trusted measurement techniques to evaluate whether their systems have decayed. This dissertation aims to assess code decay by discovering software architectural violations. Our methodology uses Lightweight Sanity Check for Implemented Architectures to derive architectural constraints represented by can-use and cannot-use phrases. A rapid assay kit for Vibrio cholerae (Vc) was developed to detect and quantify Vc cells in oyster samples within 24 h. The kit, formulated within a two -phase (liquid and solid) 96-well plate, can detect biomarker expression of Vc when the enrichment broth and incubation temperature are optimized. The kit showed 91 % selectivity and 92 % specificity when tested with 23 inclusive Vc and 106 exclusive non-Vc strains. The kit was further optimized using 47 samples of oysters, clams, and soil. Biflavonoids form a ubiquitous class of compounds in nature, which are well known for their numerous medicinal benefits. Biflavonoids such as chamaejasmine and isochamaejasmine have been shown to exhibit pharmacological activity such as anitidiabetic, anti-malaria, anti- HIV, anticancer etc. Biflavanones, chamaejasmine and isochamaejasmine are dimers of the flavanone narigenin at the C-3 position, which gives them a rare 3/3" C - C linkage. Aspergillus flavus is a pathogenic fungus causing maize ear rot disease and producing aflatoxins that are carcinogenic to humans and animals. Characterizing maize host resistance mechanisms and prioritizing candidate resistance genes are important to the development of resistant maize germplasm. This study investigated transcriptomics approaches and statistics methods on the identification of maize host resistance genes. Full-length cDNA libraries were also constructed and evaluated for gene cloning and functional analysis. This study established important sources for functional studies on differentially expressed genes and for identification of allelic gene forms to characterize gene polymorphisms and facilitate the development of DNA markers.

In this study we build solutions to three common challenges in the fields of bioinformatics through utilizing statistical methods and developing computational approaches. First, we address a common problem in genome wide association studies, which is linking genotype features within organisms of the same species to their phenotype characteristics. We specifically studied FHA domain genes in Arabidopsis thaliana distributed within Eurasian regions by clustering those plants that share similar genotype characteristics and comparing that to the regions from which they were taken. Current equine sperm cryopreservation methods fail to reliably prevent damages to important cellular structures such as the cell membrane and DNA. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of supplementing a stallion semen extender with 1 or 10 mM resveratrol on post-thaw sperm characteristics. Results showed that sperm death was increased with 10 mM compared to both the control and 1 mM (P < 0.05). DNA fragmentation was increased in the 1 mM treatment compared to the control (P < 0.05). ROS activity was reduced the most in the 10 mM with differences between all groups (P < 0.05). Membrane integrity was not different between groups (P > 0.05). Motility of the control was higher than the treatment groups (P < 0.05). Resveratrol was able to reduce ROS but was unable to preserve motility or viability at the concentrations tested.

Stagnant science achievement by students, greater demands and stresses on natural resources and environmental systems, and societal disengagement from nature highlight the need for education programs to ameliorate subsequent consequences. One attempt to address science performance and environmental apathy is Youth Environmental Science (YES), an environmental education program initiated in 2011 in a rural, minority-dominated, upper elementary school in Mississippi. I estimated yield, population metrics, production costs, and evaluated consumer acceptability and nutritive content of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii, P. zonangulus) harvested from moist-soil wetlands in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) during springs 2009-2011. I also compared nutrient and sediment concentrations and loads exported from moist-soil wetlands and nearest agriculture fields in the MAV during winters 2010-2012. Daily yield of crayfish from moist-soil wetlands was 2.4 kg (wet) ha-1 (SE = 0.50; 95% CI = 1.3-3.4). When graded by size, yield of large crayfish (> 30 g) from wetlands dominated by P. clarkii was four times greater (P < 0.05) than yield of large crayfish from wetlands dominated by P. zonangulus. Crayfish harvesting costs (2013 US dollars [$]) ranged from $405.69 ha-1 to $917.88 ha-1 and breakeven selling prices ranged from $3.74 kg-1 to $8.49 kg-1. Although studies examining juvenile recidivism have focused primarily on violent recidivism, the factors that predict recidivism likely differ by offense type. To examine general, property, and violent recidivism, this study combined individual-level data (i.e., offender and case characteristics) from the Mississippi Youth Court Information Data System (MYCIDS) for the years 2009-2011 and contextual-level data (i.e., county characteristics) from the 2010 U.S. Census and the 2010 Uniform Crime Reports (UCR). The United States has arbitrary weather criteria for a prescribed burn day to happen. This arbitrary criteria gives prescribed-burn managers a limited amount of days they can burn. To solve this, I established a 30-year climatology based on daily mixing height (m). I then calculated burn-day thresholds based on different mixing heights. I found seasonal and spatial patterns of the amount of days that are prescribed burns. Southeastern United States was my study area. Research into the nature and content of visual long-term memory has investigated what aspects of its representation may account for the remarkable ability we have to remember large amounts of detailed visual information. One theory proposed is that visual memories are supported by an underlying structure of conceptual knowledge around which visual information is organized. Study objectives were to determine the effectiveness, reproducibility, and repeatability of dental evaluation for estimating cattle age. Cattle (n = 400) aged 1.5 to 20 yr were evaluated by 3 technicians for estimated age via dentition. A subset (n = 383) was aged again 4 wk later by the same observers. Age estimations were most accurate in YOUNG (< 5 yr old) cattle with at least 95.7% rate of accuracy within 2 yr across all observers and observation events. For MIDDLE (6 to 10 yr old) and OLD (> 10 yr old) cattle, these accuracies were 81.5 and 62.1%, respectively. This technology could greatly benefit producers who are impacted by weed species that have developed resistance to other herbicides, like glyphosate-resistant Palmer Amaranth. Adoption of this new technology is likely to be rapid and widespread which will lead to an increase in the amount of dicamba and 2,4-D applied each season. The objective of this study was to examine hepatic steroid inactivation and luteal function throughout bovine gestation. In pregnant beef cows, cytochrome P450 3A activity decreased from mid- to late-gestation, while progesterone concentrations tended to increase from mid- to late-gestation. Uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase activity per kg of body weight was increased in pregnant vs non-pregnant dairy cows. Total corpus luteum (CL) blood perfusion tended to be increased in pregnant vs non-pregnant dairy cows. This thesis investigates the relationship between success and access to children, slaves, and kin as labor sources during the period of 1833 to 1865 in northeast Mississippi. The theoretical concepts of agricultural intensification and relative intensity were used to measure variability among the households. Artifacts from seven archaeological sites were used to establish mean dates. These sites were tied to their original occupants through historic records. A historic document search revealed the number of slaves and children each family had, and whether they had kin living nearby. Agricultural census records showed the productivity of each farm during the study period. …

The objective was to examine effects of melatonin supplementation during late gestation on uterine artery hemodynamics, offspring growth, and endocrine profiles. Prior to day 170 of gestation, heifers were trained to the Calan feeding system. On day 190 of gestation, heifers (n = 20) were blocked by BW and then randomly assigned to one of two dietary treatments: 1) 20 mg of dietary melatonin per day (MEL) or 2) no melatonin supplementation (CON). Supplementation ceased on day 262 of gestation. A main effect (P < 0.01) of treatment was observed for total uterine artery blood flow with it being increased in MEL vs. CON. An interaction (P = 0.008) was observed in calf body weight increasing at weeks 8 and 9 in MEL vs. CON. Dietary melatonin could be used to potentially increase uterine blood flow and calf body weight.

The objective of this study is to determine the factors that affect recruitment in community colleges and how community colleges can be competitive in the recruitment process. In recent years, community colleges have become more competitive in their tuition rates, course schedules, program offerings, and athletics. Therefore, community college recruiters are given the difficult task of vying for top students and athletes.
