Multilevel Design Optimization And The Effect Of Epistemic Uncertainty, Benjamin Edward Nesbit
Multilevel Design Optimization And The Effect Of Epistemic Uncertainty, Benjamin Edward Nesbit
Theses and Dissertations
This work presents the state of the art in hierarchically decomposed multilevel optimization. This work is expanded with the inclusion of evidence theory with the multilevel framework for the quantification of epistemic uncertainty. The novel method, Evidence-Based Multilevel Design optimization, is then used to solve two analytical optimization problems. This method is also used to explore the effect of the belief structure on the final solution. A methodology is presented to reduce the costs of evidence-based optimization through manipulation of the belief structure. In addition, a transport aircraft wing is also solved with multilevel optimization without uncertainty. This complex, real …

Impacts Of Feedstock Bark Addition And Centrifugal Filtration On Pyrolysis Oil Properties And Storage Stability, Anandavalli Varadarajan
Theses and Dissertations
The physicochemical properties of pyrolysis oil have been shown to be dependent on feedstock composition. Accelerated aging tests were performed to understand the effects of feedstock, condensate fraction collected, and filtration on the stability of pyrolysis oil. In this study, pyrolysis oil properties critical for downstream upgrading were measured and compared for different feedstock weight ratios of pine clearwood and pine bark. Post-condensation filtration of pyrolysis oil was evaluated using both lab-scale and pilot plant-scale centrifugal filtration with several operational parameters evaluated. The pilot-plant centrifuge can be used as a three-phase separator [light liquid-heavy liquid-solids] or a two-phase clarifier [liquid-solid]. …
The Bedding Angle Of Sand, Bryant Andrew Robbins
The Bedding Angle Of Sand, Bryant Andrew Robbins
Theses and Dissertations
Bedding angle is a fundamental property of a particulate system that describes the resistance to rolling motion of a single grain. Mean trends of the bedding angle of sand have been described in the literature. This research expands upon the work to date by investigating the distribution of bedding angle for sands. Experimental measurements of bedding angle distributions are made for eight sands. Additionally, a theoretical description of the variability of bedding angle as a function of random grain size is developed and implemented numerically. The shape of the bedding angle distribution is found to be simulated well from the …

This research focuses on the development and validation of an autonomic security management (ASM) framework to proactively protect distributed systems (DSs) from a wide range of cyber assaults with little or no human intervention. Multi-dimensional cyber attack taxonomy was developed to characterize cyber attack methods and tactics against both a Web application (Web-app) and an industrial control system (ICS) by accounting for their impacts on a set of system, network, and security features. Based on this taxonomy, a normal region of system performance is constructed, refined, and used to predict and identify abnormal system behavior with the help of forecasting …
Investigating Nondestructive Evaluation Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Beams Using Embedded Terfenol-D Particle Sensors, Jonathan D. Rudd
Investigating Nondestructive Evaluation Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Beams Using Embedded Terfenol-D Particle Sensors, Jonathan D. Rudd
Theses and Dissertations
Reinforced fiber polymer composites are a class of materials that are composed of multiple constituents that work together to create a material specific for applications. By combining different fibers and matricies, laminates can be created that meet demands for high specific stiffness, damping specifications, and electrical resistance. However, their internal complexity subjects them to a number of internal failure modes that have the potential to fail the laminate. Those failure mechanisms are fiber breaking, microcracking in the matrix, debonding of the fibers from matrix, and delamination of ply layers. To assess these failures, nondestructive evaluation methods have been developed to …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Recently, Sugihara proposed an innovative causality concept, which, in contrast to statistical predictability in Granger sense, characterizes underlying deterministic causation of the system. This work exploits Sugihara causality analysis to develop novel EEG biomarkers for discriminating normal aging from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early Alzheimer's disease (AD). The hypothesis of this work is that scalp EEG based causality measurements have different distributions for different cognitive groups and hence the causality measurements can be used to distinguish between NC, MCI, and AD participants. The current results are based on 30-channel resting EEG records from 48 age-matched participants (mean age 75.7 …

Catalytic Conversion Of Biomass To Bio-Fuels, Hevagamage Rangana Thilan Wijayapala
Catalytic Conversion Of Biomass To Bio-Fuels, Hevagamage Rangana Thilan Wijayapala
Theses and Dissertations
The conversion of biomass to biouel has received considerable attention as a sustainable way to produce energy. As worldwide fossil fuels become depleted these efforts grow in importance. The overall strategy is to transform the parent biomass feedstock to increase C-C bonds while reducing oxygen in the final products. A catalytic approach is often used to achieve good yields of transportation grade liquid hydrocarbons from biomass. Development of novel catalyst systems to aid in the thermochemical conversion of biomass to biouel is the focus of this thesis. Gasification of biomass produces synthesis gas (CO and H2). Synthesis gas can be …
Survival And Habitat Selection Of American Black Ducks In Tennessee, Kira Cristina Newcomb
Survival And Habitat Selection Of American Black Ducks In Tennessee, Kira Cristina Newcomb
Theses and Dissertations
American black duck (Anas rubripes) populations declined throughout North America from 1950–1990, but the breeding population since has stabilized. However, limited information exists on black ducks in the Mississippi Flyway, where wintering populations continue to decline. I radiomarked 111 female black ducks at Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) in winters 2010–2012 to estimate winter survival and investigate patterns of habitat selection. Winter survival (83–85%) was greater than or comparable to previous estimates for black duck populations in North America. Interval survival increased 0.6% with a 100 g increase in body mass, but survival differed between years and waterfowl hunting seasons …

Who Decides? A Study Of The Effects On Decision Unit Dynamics In Crisis And Crisis Transition, Janet Leigh Drake
Who Decides? A Study Of The Effects On Decision Unit Dynamics In Crisis And Crisis Transition, Janet Leigh Drake
Dissertations
Foreign policy decision-making is often an obscured process, particularly when it involves threats to national security or national interests. Despite the lack of transparency, though sometimes necessary, foreign policy decisions can have far-reaching consequences. Policymakers establish and affect relationships with other governments, and can commit state resources for cooperation or for conflict. The purpose of this study is to determine what types of decision units make foreign policy decisions and what factors influence the dynamics of the unit. I employ the decision units (DU) framework developed by Margaret Hermann to decisions made by the United States and Israel during the …

Developing, Implementing, And Evaluating A No-Child-Left-Inside Pilot Program, Claudia Radel, Jamie C. Brand, Roslynn Brain
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
We describe experience with a pilot week-long, No-Child-Left-Inside (NCLI), outdoor program implemented in Cache Valley, Utah, in 2012. Through response analysis of a “pre-then-post” children's survey and a parent-completed demographic survey, we assess program effectiveness in raising children's enthusiasm for nature-related behaviors and in reaching a target audience of all local families. The program reached many families with low participation in other conservation programs but failed to reach families from the growing Latino population. Participating children experienced increased excitement to spend more time outdoors exploring and learning, accomplishing NCLI goals of laying a groundwork for children's enhanced environmental literacy.
A Command And Control Approach To Red Teaming, Kaitlin Britt Haynes
A Command And Control Approach To Red Teaming, Kaitlin Britt Haynes
Theses and Dissertations
As the military has to react and respond to cyber attacks, they also are having to develop a way to apply cyber operations to the command and control hierarchy already in use. This thesis studies the requirements for a cyber command and control (C3) and conducts an experiment to test whether a C3 approach to red teaming helps users find more vulnerabilities. Since red teaming is similar in setting to the cyber operations setting, if the team finds that a C3 helps team members find more vulnerabilities, then a C3 environment can help the military better respond to cyber attacks. …
Characterization Of Sediment Microbial Communities And Analysis Of Biogeochemical Responses To Eutrophication In Southeastern Estuaries, Gary Alon Blakeney
Characterization Of Sediment Microbial Communities And Analysis Of Biogeochemical Responses To Eutrophication In Southeastern Estuaries, Gary Alon Blakeney
Theses and Dissertations
Estuaries are valuable economic resources to humans. However, changes in these ecosystems, such as alteration in nutrient availability, can impose eutrophic pressures. Traditionally, estuaries have been monitored through chemical analyses that measure factors such as sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and reduced forms of Fe(II), Mn(II), and H2S. These methods are time consuming and have been proven to be unreliable. This study was conducted to determine if using T-RFLP analysis could be used as a proxy for some of the current methods used to monitor eutrophication. Using SPSS to perform a principle component analysis, it was determined that connections can be …
Spectral Separability Of Longleaf And Loblolly Pines In High-Resolution Satellite Data, Mary Frances Nieminen
Spectral Separability Of Longleaf And Loblolly Pines In High-Resolution Satellite Data, Mary Frances Nieminen
Theses and Dissertations
The spectral separability of southern pines is a perplexing issue due to limited variance of spectral reflectance in species with similar morphological characteristics. Understory vegetation reflectance may exacerbate the ability to accurately identify various overstory tree species, specifically those of longleaf and loblolly pines in the southeastern US. In this study, identification of target level overstory crowns with varying degrees of understory vegetation cover based on fire return frequency was used to assess the role of understory reflectance on target crown species discernment. Seasonal variations of understory vegetation in late dormant and late growing seasons were compared for disparities in …

Master's Theses
This thesis addresses the plight of Sub-Saharan Africans who are now Canadians and are trying to settle in a new country in order to reunite with their family members. However, rather than assisting with process of resettlement, current Canadian policy has the opposite effect. It appears to create a route by which people can sponsor their loved ones, but in reality the nature of the process is arduous and filled with time delays, regulatory and processing issues and other kinds of difficulties. Consequently, what therefore appears as a hopeful situation ends up creating despair. This situation is particularly hard for …

Determination Of The Weak Charge Of The Proton Through Parity Violating Asymmetry Measurements In The Elastic Ep Scattering, Adesh Subedi
Theses and Dissertations
The Qweak experiment has taken data to make a 2.5 percent measurement of parity violating elastic ep asymmetry in the four momentum transfer region of 0.0250 (GeV/c)2. This asymmetry is proportional to the weak charge of the proton, which is related to the weak mixing angle, sin2(thetaW). The final Qweak measurement will provide the most precise measurement of the weak mixing angle below the Z° pole to test the Standard Model prediction. A description of the experimental apparatus is provided in this dissertation. The experiment was carried out using a longitudinally polarized electron beam of up to 180 microampere on …
Effects Of Intercropping Switchgrass In Loblolly Pine Plantations On Bird Communities, Zachary G. Loman
Effects Of Intercropping Switchgrass In Loblolly Pine Plantations On Bird Communities, Zachary G. Loman
Theses and Dissertations
Intercropping switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) between tree rows within young pine (Pinus spp.) plantations is a novel method to generate lignocellulosic biofuel feedstocks within intensively managed forests. Intensively managed pine supports diverse avian assemblages potentially affected by establishment and maintenance of a biomass feedstock. I sought to understand how establishing switchgrass on an operational scale affects bird communities within intercropped plantations as compared to typical intensively managed loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantations. I conducted breeding bird point counts, nest searching and monitoring, and coarse woody debris (CWD) surveys following establishment of intercropped switchgrass stands (6 replicates), traditionally-managed pine plantations, and switchgrass-only …
