Design Of A New Electromagnetic Valve With A Hybrid Pm/Em Actuator In Si Engines, Ly Vinh Dat, Yaojung Shiao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Numerous devices have been developed for controlling valve timings in SI engines. Among them, the electromagnetic valve train (EMV) actuator can fully control valve timings to improve fuel consumption and emission. In addition, an EMV with a permanent-magnet and electromagnetic-coil (PM/EM) hybrid actuator has several advantages of control, energy consumption, and time response compared over conventional EMVs. This paper proposes a novel EMV with a PM/EM hybrid actuator that differs considerably from existing EMVs. Finite element analysis was used for analyzing the EMV design. The optimization was based on criteria that ensured the EMV to satisfy holding forces in closed …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An optimal design for a polyurethane (PU) aortic valve was developed in a previous study. The current study investigated an approach for manufacturing PU aortic valves, evaluating the effective orifice areas (EOAs) of the prototypes. Two manufacturing approaches, assembly and single-piece forming methods, were developed. In the assembly method, support frames and valve leaflets were manufactured separately and then glued together by using an adhesive substance. By contrast, in the single-piece forming method, two main components of the valve were fabricated simultaneously by using a molding technique. This study established an experimental loop that mimics natural circulation from the left …

Discoid And Asymmetrical Gyroless Micro-Satellite Off-Modulation Attitude Control With Kalman Filter, Ho-Nien Shou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The gyroless attitude control method and kalman algorithm procedures presented in this paper are applicable to asymmetrical microsatellites of any shape with large mass variation and without angular rate sensors. The attitude sensors include a three-axis magnetometer, a horizon sensor, and a coarse sun sensor (CSS), which together serve as an analytic platform and help in ensuring the stability of attitude controls. The attitude control problem of microsatellites has become a focal point because microsatellite fabrication processes are short, costless, and can be flexibly used for various purposes. The center of mass of the microsatellite can be offset because of …

This paper presents an intelligent solar panel cleaning system that utilizes a fuzzy logic controller. The output voltage of the solar panel is applied to calculate whether to activate the cleaning mechanism. The direction and position of the system is set using a light sensor that is parallel to the direction of the sunlight. The data from the light sensors, combined with fuzzy logic control software developed using LabVIEW, determine the control commands (stop, forward, and reverse) for the stepper motors controlling the cleaning process. The cleaning process, which is repeated until the power output from the solar panels is …

Synthetic Physical Models For Animating Unsteady Fish Motions, Shyh-Kuang Ueng, Hong-Kai Chen Dec 2014

Synthetic Physical Models For Animating Unsteady Fish Motions, Shyh-Kuang Ueng, Hong-Kai Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents physical models for simulating unsteady fish motions, including bursting, gliding, braking, turning, ascending and descending. A new wave model, the controllable body wave model, is developed to undulate the fish body to produce bursting and gliding motions. A key frame approach is adopted to realize braking, turning, descending and ascending. In the key frame method, individual motions are decomposed into sequences of key steps. The gestures of the fish in these key steps are recorded and regarded as key frames. In the run time, these recorded key frames are sequentially reproduced to generate swimming patterns. In addition …

Fault Diagnosis And Performance Assessment For A Rotary Actuator Based On Neural Network Observer, Jian Ma, Xin Li, Chen Lu, Zi-Li Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Substantial damage may occur when a rotary actuator fails during operation. Therefore, effective fault diagnosis of a rotary actuator is crucial to ensuring the safety of the device. However, only a few studies on fault detection, fault isolation, and performance assessment have focused on rotary actuators. In this study, fault detection and fault isolation processes were implemented by designing two observers based on a neural network, and a method that assesses the performance of the rotary actuator is proposed. First, two observers are established according to the structure of the rotary actuator. Data in their normal state are used to …

Language Skill Development In Japanese Kokugo Education: Analysis Of The Television Program Wakaru Kokugo Yomikaki No Tsubo, Ruri Yoshii

Dissertations and Theses

Any type of education implemented by a modern nation-state is, at least in part, a tool for socializing its people. In this regard, Japanese language and literature education, kokugo, has played an important role in Japan by emphasizing nationalism and the integrity of a Japanese identity. According to Ishihara (2007) and Lee (1996 [English translation 2010]), kokugo, since its inception in 1900, has promoted moral awareness and assimilation of Japanese ideals across the country. However, responding to unsatisfactory test results in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2003 and 2006, Japan's Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and …

Accelerating Heuristic Search For Ai Planning, You Xu Dec 2014

Accelerating Heuristic Search For Ai Planning, You Xu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

AI Planning is an important research field. Heuristic search is the most commonly used method in solving planning problems. Despite recent advances in improving the quality of heuristics and devising better search strategies, the high computational cost of heuristic search remains a barrier that severely limits its application to real world problems. In this dissertation, we propose theories, algorithms and systems to accelerate heuristic search for AI planning.

We make four major contributions in this dissertation. First, we propose a state-space reduction method called Stratified Planning to accelerate heuristic search. Stratified Planning can be combined with any heuristic search to …

Kaczmarz Iterative Projection And Nonuniform Sampling With Complexity Estimates, Tim Wallace, Ali Safak Sekmen Dec 2014

Kaczmarz Iterative Projection And Nonuniform Sampling With Complexity Estimates, Tim Wallace, Ali Safak Sekmen

Computer Science Faculty Research

Kaczmarz’s alternating projection method has been widely used for solving mostly over-determined linear system of equations Ax = b in various fields of engineering, medical imaging, and computational science. Because of its simple iterative nature with light computation, this method was successfully applied in computerized tomography. Since tomography generates a matrix A with highly coherent rows, randomized Kaczmarz algorithm is expected to provide faster convergence as it picks a row for each iteration at random, based on a certain probability distribution. Since Kaczmarz’s method is a subspace projection method, the convergence rate for simple Kaczmarz algorithm was developed in …

The Relation Between Couple Communication And Work-Family Conflict, Klaudia Konik Dec 2014

The Relation Between Couple Communication And Work-Family Conflict, Klaudia Konik

Honors Projects

In studies examining work-family conflict, much of the attention has been focused on control at work (Radcliffe & Cassel, 2014). The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between couple communication at home and experienced job satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and overall work-family conflict. Though hypotheses specifically examining communication frequency were not fully supported, post-hoc analyses revealed unique relationships between specific communication patterns and skills and work-family conflict, especially when examining family-to-work influences. Suggestions for future research to examine the benefits of teaching communication skills at work and how they may impact work-family conflict are also discussed.

Hyperfiltration subjects podocytes to increased tensile stress and fluid flow shear stress (FFSS). We showed a 1.5- to 2.0-fold increase in FFSS in uninephrectomized animals and altered podocyte actin cytoskeleton and increased synthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) following in vitro application of FFSS. We hypothesized that increased FFSS mediates cellular changes through specific receptors of PGE2. Presently, we studied the effect of FFSS on cultured podocytes and decapsulated isolated glomeruli in vitro, and on solitary kidney in uninephrectomized sv129 mice. In cultured podocytes, FFSS resulted in increased gene and protein expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 but not COX-1, prostanoid receptor EP2 …

Conflicted Union: Culture, Economics And European Union Media Policy, Daphney Pernola Barr Dec 2014

Conflicted Union: Culture, Economics And European Union Media Policy, Daphney Pernola Barr

Theses and Dissertations

The constant tension between internal market development and cultural preservation remain within European Union audiovisual media services regulatory policy. While market harmonization and liberalization are key to developing a formidable European media market, the preservation of and promotion of ‘European-ness’ depends upon the protection of cultural diversity, a necessity for a confederation of 27 sovereign nation-states with distinct cultures and languages. It may not currently be possible to reconcile the intrinsic duality of audiovisual media through EU regulatory policy mechanisms. However, a regulatory policy clearly that addresses the potential of cultural harmonization/economic liberalization conflict, that explicitly connects the EU’s audiovisual …

Modeling Mussel Mortality: Investigating The Importance Of Swash And The Potential Implications Of Changing Wave Environments, Shadow Leigh Gulledge Dec 2014

Modeling Mussel Mortality: Investigating The Importance Of Swash And The Potential Implications Of Changing Wave Environments, Shadow Leigh Gulledge

Theses and Dissertations

Rising sea level and increases in temperature are causing biogeographic shifts in intertidal zones and can also lead to shifts in the local vertical zonation of organisms due to changes in body temperature during aerial exposure during low tide. Swash is an important determinant of aerial body temperatures, and vulnerability of intertidal zones to changes in climate could potentially depend on how much and how often animals are cooled by waves. While wave heights (and thus swash) are generally expected to increase with climate change, anthropogenic physical structures, such as breakwaters and wave energy converters, can decrease wave height and …

Alterations To Taste Preference In Mc4r Haploinsufficiency Manifest Prior To Dietary Induced Obesity And Are Accompanied By Dendritic Spine Alterations To Medium Spiny Neurons Of The Nucleus Accumbens In Adulthood, Robert Francis Roscoe Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and has become an increasing public health concern for developed nations. Haploinsufficiency of melanocortin receptor 4 has been identified as the single most common monogenetic cause of obesity in humans. Using the MC4R +/- haploinsufficient rat, we sought to determine potential alterations in body weight and morphology, locomotor activity, sucrose concentration preference, and progressive-ratio operant testing in a dietary-induced obesity environment. Rats were placed on four separate diets corresponding to 1.7% saturated fat with 12.2% total kcal/fat, 6% saturated fat with a 40% total kcal/fat, 12% saturated fat with a 40% …
