A Comparison Of Body Proportions In Juvenile Sea Turtles: How Shape May Optimize Survival In A Vulnerable Life Stage, Jessica Hope Pate
A Comparison Of Body Proportions In Juvenile Sea Turtles: How Shape May Optimize Survival In A Vulnerable Life Stage, Jessica Hope Pate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Marine turtles produce many offspring which offsets the high mortality experienced by turtles during early development. Juvenile mortality might be reduced by evolving effective behavioral as well as morphological anti-predator defenses. Body proportions of three species (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas, Dermochelys coriacea) of turtles were measured in the first fourteen weeks of development to examine how growth may mitigate predation by gape-limited predators. Growth was categorized as isometric if shape did not change during development or allometric if body shape did change. All three species showed allometric growth in carapace width; however it was less pronounced in the larger D. …

The Job Satisfaction, Occupational Sentiments, And Work-Related Stress Of Prison Wardens: Results From A National Survey, Martina Aa Dasilva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study examined the results of the National Prison Wardens’ Survey to ascertain the levels of job satisfaction, occupational sentiments, and work-related stress among prison wardens and to establish whether these variables differed between male and female respondents. The findings indicated that wardens generally experience high levels of job satisfaction, reflect positive occupational sentiments, and report low levels of work-related stress. Additionally, results from the Chi-square tests and Lambda measures of association indicated that little to no relationship existed between gender and any of the explored variables.

Out of 60 million Americans suffering from sleep disorder, an estimated 18 million have sleep apnea. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, sleep apnea is a chronic condition that disrupts a patient’s sleep. While the annual cost of treating sleep apnea patients in the United States is approximately $3.18 billion (including screening costs) it is estimated that untreated sleep apnea may cause $3.4 billion in additional medical costs. A polysomnography (PSG) is an all-night sleep study which monitors various physical functions during sleep including electrical activity of the heart, brain wave patterns, eye movement, muscle tone, …
Social Impact Of Entrepreneurial Immigrants On Florida’S Gold Coast, Noemi Coltea
Social Impact Of Entrepreneurial Immigrants On Florida’S Gold Coast, Noemi Coltea
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
At the dawn of a new presidential election, we are reminded that what separates the United States from the rest of the world are the immigrants who came here in the pursuit of the American Dream. These immigrants do not just come to the United States as workers, but also as consumers and entrepreneurs who contribute to the American economy, and use the profits created by their successful entrepreneurship(s) in a way that they become catalysts of change. None of the studies have managed to track the qualities and perceptions of these entrepreneurial immigrants turned philanthropists since the 1940’s. By …

A Generalized Stochastic Birth/Death Population Model Based On Indian Riverlagoon Dolphins, Jon Stonger
A Generalized Stochastic Birth/Death Population Model Based On Indian Riverlagoon Dolphins, Jon Stonger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
For over a decade, researchers at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) have conducted surveys of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) population of Indian River Lagoon (IRL) in Florida. I have constructed a 4-stage population model using the statistical program R. The model is used to conduct a viability analysis by analyzing the relationship between birth, calf and adult survival rates. The power analysis compares survey frequency to expected confidence intervals in estimating abundance. The sensitivity analysis shows that the population is most sensitive to changes in adult survival, followed by birth rate and calf survival. The model shows a strong …
A Survival Analysis Of Adolescent Friendships: The Downside Of Dissimilarity, Amy C. Hartl
A Survival Analysis Of Adolescent Friendships: The Downside Of Dissimilarity, Amy C. Hartl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Adolescent friendships are critical for adjustment but are extremely unstable. Dyadic characteristics may put friendships at risk for dissolution, whereas individual characteristics may put individuals at risk for participating in unstable friendships. The present study examines whether dyadic or individual school-related characteristics predict rates of adolescent friendship dissolution. A sample of 410 adolescents (n=201 males, 209 females; M age=13.20 years) participated in 573 reciprocated friendships originating in the 7th grade which were followed from 8th-12th grade. Discrete-time survival analyses evaluated grade 7 dyadic and individual characteristics (sex, age, ethnicity, number of friends, peer acceptance, peer rejection, leadership, and school competence) …
A Habitat Suitability Model For Wading Birds In A Large Subtropical Lake: Linking Hydrologic Fluctuations And Nesting, Richard A. Botta
A Habitat Suitability Model For Wading Birds In A Large Subtropical Lake: Linking Hydrologic Fluctuations And Nesting, Richard A. Botta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Anthropogenic hydrologic alterations can affect the quality of lake littoral zone habitats for wading birds, such as the great egret (Ardea alba), snowy egret (Egretta thula), and white ibis (Eudocimus albus). One such lake in Florida, Lake Okeechobee, has experienced a marked decline in wading bird nesting since the 1970’s, concomitant with changes in lake level management. It’s hypothesized that a reduction in foraging habitat has led to the nesting decline; however, there is little quantitative evidence of this link. A habitat suitability model was developed for Lake Okeechobee wading birds that incorporate the spatial and temporal dynamics of environmental …
A Foot In Both Camps: The Influence Of Role Identity Centrality Of Professional Service Entrepreneurs On Entrepreneurial Orientation And Firm Performance, Steven Anthony Stewart
A Foot In Both Camps: The Influence Of Role Identity Centrality Of Professional Service Entrepreneurs On Entrepreneurial Orientation And Firm Performance, Steven Anthony Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Professional service entrepreneurs (PSEs) paradoxically practice their profession in highly institutionalized contexts which require significant socialization, while at the same time enacting their role as an entrepreneur. Some activities consistent with entrepreneurship may be unnecessary for—and possibly even contradictory with— activities consistent with professional roles. In this dissertation, I addressed the questions of how two highly central role identities (professional and entrepreneurial) related to entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in professional service practices, and how EO influences performance in the context of professional practices. Using a sample of 139 physicians, I examined the relationships between the role identity centrality of two primary …

Participants’ self-reported event frequencies for the cued and uncued …
Legal Education In Crisis, And Why Law Libraries Are Doomed, James G. Milles
Legal Education In Crisis, And Why Law Libraries Are Doomed, James G. Milles
Journal Articles
The dual crises facing legal education - the economic crisis affecting both the job market and the pool of law school applicants, and the crisis of confidence in the ability of law schools and the ABA accreditation process to meet the needs of lawyers or society at large - have undermined the case for not only the autonomy, but the very existence, of law school libraries as we have known them. Legal education in the United States is about to undergo a long-term contraction, and law libraries will be among the first to go. A few law schools may abandon …

All the Place You’ve Got is a collection of short stories inspired by and set in the author’s hometown of Warner Robins; Georgia. This is a work of fiction. Names, places, occurrences, and characters are either a product of the authors imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, events, or locales is entirely coincidental. The title is a partial quote of dialogue stated by Hazel Motes, the protagonist of Flannery O’Connor’s first novel Wise Blood. The full quote reads, “In yourself right now is all the place you’ve got.” This …

Disparity In Judicial Misconduct Cases: Color-Blind Diversity?, Athena D. Mutua
Disparity In Judicial Misconduct Cases: Color-Blind Diversity?, Athena D. Mutua
Journal Articles
This article presents and analyzes preliminary data on racial and gender disparities in state judicial disciplinary actions. Studies of demographic disparities in the context of judicial discipline do not exist. This paper presents a first past and preliminary look at the data collected on the issue and assembled into a database. The article is also motivated by the resistance encountered to inquiries into the demographic profile of the state bench and its judges. As such, it also tells the story of the journey undertaken to secure this information and critiques what the author terms a practice of colorblind diversity. Initially …

Unhinging Same-Sex Marriage From The Constitutional Canon: The Search For A Principled Doctrinal Framework, Anthony Michael Kreis
Emory Law Journal Online
When eighty-four-year-old Edie Windsor challenged the Defense of Marriage Act's constitutionality, she may not have predicted the case's historic importance. The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), enacted in 1996, amended the federal Dictionary Act to define "marriage" and "spouse" to exclude same-sex marriages in over 1,000 statutes and regulations.
Nuance, Technology, And The Fourth Amendment: A Response To Predictive Policing And Reasonable Suspicion, Fabio Arcila Jr.
Nuance, Technology, And The Fourth Amendment: A Response To Predictive Policing And Reasonable Suspicion, Fabio Arcila Jr.
Emory Law Journal Online
In an engaging critique, Professor Arcila finds that Professor Ferguson is correct in that predictive policing will likely be incorporated into Fourth Amendment law and that it will alter reasonable suspicion determinations. But Professor Arcila also argues that the potential incorporation of predictive policing reflects a larger deficiency in our Fourth Amendment jurisprudence and that it should not be adopted because it fails to adequately consider and respect a broader range of protected interests.
Remedies In A Wide-Angle Lens: Observations On Remedial Concilience, David Partlett
Remedies In A Wide-Angle Lens: Observations On Remedial Concilience, David Partlett
Emory Law Journal Online
Professor Partlett notes that Professor Jimenez's article appears to be an orphan in American legal academic discourse. After a thoughtful analysis, Professor Partlett commends Professor Jimenez's work, but urges that both a broader, comparative view of remedies and a revival of the virtues of private common law method are overdue in this area of scholarship.
Precedent, Reliance, And The Judicial Function: A Response To Prof. Kozel, Timothy P. Terrell
Precedent, Reliance, And The Judicial Function: A Response To Prof. Kozel, Timothy P. Terrell
Emory Law Journal Online
In this response, Professor Terrell argues that Professor Kozel bears a particularly heavy burden of proof. He finds that Professor Kozel's thesis is, on the one hand, both bold and potentially far-reaching, but on the other, counterintuitive and inconsistent with our most basic understandings of the judicial role in our legal system. Professor Terrell evaluates Professor Kozel's recent article, and identifies several points of disagreement.
Toward Proportional Deportation, Polly J. Price
Toward Proportional Deportation, Polly J. Price
Emory Law Journal Online
Professor Price discusses how Professor Banks's contribution provides an especially compelling illustration of the disjuncture between citizenship status and long-term residence in U.S. immigration law. Professor Price argues that Professor Banks makes a compelling case that Congress unintentionally created this schism and that this state of affairs need not be.
Patient Autonomy, Physician Obligation, And State Licensing Authority In The Constitutional Right Not To Kill: A Response To Professor Mark L. Rienzi, Jessica L. Roberts
Patient Autonomy, Physician Obligation, And State Licensing Authority In The Constitutional Right Not To Kill: A Response To Professor Mark L. Rienzi, Jessica L. Roberts
Emory Law Journal Online
In his article, The Constitutional Right Not to Kill, Professor Mark L. Rienzi persuasively asserts that the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments protect individuals from being forced to participate in government-authorized killings. Drawing from several strands of diverse legal doctrines, including military conscientious objections, capital punishment, physician-assisted death, abortion, and self-defense, he demonstrates the various ways in which the state and federal governments have shielded American citizens from being required to kill against their will.

In her article, Professor Render does a great service by proposing to unify legal rules relating to the human body through the concept of the "law of the body."
Materializing Citizenship: Finance In A Producers' Republic, Robert Hockett
Materializing Citizenship: Finance In A Producers' Republic, Robert Hockett
Emory Law Journal Online
Professor Hockett finds that Professor Baradaran's helpful new article is, in effect, largely about the institutional consequences of abandoning the once-dominant view of finance as the means by which to secure individual initiative and productive autonomy in our polity. Professor Hockett argues that a tight link exists between how we configure and conduct our enterprise and how we configure and conduct our finance. He argues further that we cannot fully describe what an optimally inclusive and sustainable banking and broader financial system would look like without also identifying an optimally participatory productive culture and attendant mode of capital accumulation.
