Classroom research that is framed from social constructivist, sociocultural, activity theory and social semiotic perspectives highlights the social interactions involving multimodal representations which are used to communicate science ideas and also act as semiotic resources for meaning making. Social and cognitive processes of co-constructing meaning are mediated by talk, embodied representations …

Integrating Soil And Plant Tissue Tests And Using An Artificial Intelligence Method For Data Modelling Is Likely To Improve Decisions For In-Season Nitrogen Management, Andreas Neuhaus, Leisa Armstrong, Jinsong Leng, Dean Diepeveen, Geoff Anderson Jan 2014

Integrating Soil And Plant Tissue Tests And Using An Artificial Intelligence Method For Data Modelling Is Likely To Improve Decisions For In-Season Nitrogen Management, Andreas Neuhaus, Leisa Armstrong, Jinsong Leng, Dean Diepeveen, Geoff Anderson

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper hypothesizes that there is value in combining soil, climate and plant tissue data to give more reliable advice on nitrogen top-ups in-season when compared with models that are currently available. The benefit of soil and climate data is to factor in N mineralisation and potential yield while plant test data is a more direct approach of yield estimates when considering firstly plant N uptake from the whole soil profile and secondly biomass (important yield component). Plant test data are closer to yield in time and space than soil test data, shortening the time period for any yield prognosis …

Are We Approaching Pit Lake Closure From The Wrong Perspective?, Mark A. Lund, Melanie L. Blanchette Jan 2014

Are We Approaching Pit Lake Closure From The Wrong Perspective?, Mark A. Lund, Melanie L. Blanchette

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Pit lakes are similar to natural lakes formed by faulting, glacial action, volcanic action and asteroid collisions. These natural lakes have, after thousands of years, developed into environmentally significant ecosystems. As artificial constructs, pit lakes can be modified prior to filling to enhance lake attributes, such as modification of catchment size, creation of littoral zones and addition of organic matter. Significant advances could be made in successful closure and relinquishment of pit lakes, by 1) choosing appropriate model lakes, 2) understanding successional processes, 3) designing pit lakes to enhance ecological values, and 4) recognizing that it will take time to …

Modelling And Analysis On Noisy Financial Time Series, Jinsong Leng Jan 2014

Modelling And Analysis On Noisy Financial Time Series, Jinsong Leng

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Building the prediction model(s) from the historical time series has attracted many researchers in last few decades. For example, the traders of hedge funds and experts in agriculture are demanding the precise models to make the prediction of the possible trends and cycles. Even though many statistical or machine learning (ML) models have been proposed, however, there are no universal solutions available to resolve such particular prob-lem. In this paper, the powerful forward-backward non-linear filter and wavelet-based denoising method are introduced to remove the high level of noise embedded in financial time series. With the filtered time series, the statistical …

Student Motivations For Studying Online: A Qualitative Study, Melanie K. Henry, Julie Ann Pooley, Maryam Omari

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The availability of online courses has continued to grow over recent years with more students now turning to online offerings. The flexibility offered through online learning is attractive to prospective students with some of the benefits including reduced costs, and the potential to increase and diversify the student body. Online courses provide the advantage of reaching those who may be ‘too busy’ for traditional study, and offer flexibility through anywhere, anytime access. While these benefits may attract prospective learners to the online environment there remains little empirical evidence for the reasons students actually make the decision to study online over …

Solar Energy Harvesting Clear Glass For Building-Integrated Photovoltaics, Kamal Alameh, Mikhail Vasiliev, Ramzy Alghamedi, Mohammad Alam, V. Rosenberg

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

We propose and demonstrate the concept of an energy-harvesting clear glass panel based on the use of all-inorganic luminophores embedded into a lamination layer in conjunction with low-emissivity coatings and CIS solar cells. Most of the visible solar radiation is transmitted through the laminated glass panel while UV radiation is down-converted and guided together with a part of infrared radiation to the edges for conversion to electricity by solar cells integrated at the edges of the glass panel. Experimental results demonstrate that a 10cmx10cm energy-harvesting clear glass can pass about 70% of the visible solar radiation, block 90% of UV …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are common tools for diagnosing malaria, but are deficient in detecting low Plasmodium parasitaemia. A novel molecular diagnostic tool (nPCR-HRM) that combines the sensitivity and specificity of nested PCR (nPCR) and direct PCR-high resolution melting analysis (dPCR-HRM) was developed. To evaluate patterns of anti-malarial drug administration when no parasites are detected, nPCR-HRM was employed to screen blood samples for low parasitaemia from febrile patients without microscopically detectable Plasmodium infections in a rural malaria-endemic setting. Methods: Blood samples (n = 197) were collected in two islands of Lake Victoria, Kenya, from febrile patients without …

Biology Of The Coconut Bug, Pseudotheraptus Wayi, On French Beans, James Peter Egonyu, Sunday Ekesi, Jacques Kabaru, Lucy Irungu

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The coconut bug, Pseudotheraptus wayi Brown (Heteroptera: Coreidae), is a major pest of a wide range of economically important crops in Eastern and Southern Africa. The suitability of French beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabales: Fabaceae) as an alternative food for mass rearing of P. wayi was determined by elucidating its development, survival, and reproduction on French bean pods in the laboratory. Development and survival of immatures on French beans was comparable to what is reported with two hosts previously used for rearing this species, namely coconut and cashew. Adults survived thrice longer and laid almost twice more eggs on the …

Triple Bag Hermetic Storage Delivers A Lethal Punch To Prostephanus Truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) In Stored Maize, A. W. Njoroge, H. D. Affognon, C. M. Mutungi, J. Manono, P. O. Lamuka, L. L. Murdock Jan 2014

Triple Bag Hermetic Storage Delivers A Lethal Punch To Prostephanus Truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) In Stored Maize, A. W. Njoroge, H. D. Affognon, C. M. Mutungi, J. Manono, P. O. Lamuka, L. L. Murdock

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Clean shelled maize was stored in woven polypropylene (PP) or triple layer polyethylene (PICS™) bags in the presence of Prostephanus truncatus Horn (PP1; PICS1) or absence of it (PP0; PICS0) at ambient conditions for six months. Moisture content, live insect population, grain damage, weight loss, and germination were analyzed on a monthly basis. Temperature and relative humidity in both PICS- and PP-bag setups were monitored, as well as the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the PICS bags. Overall, maize stored in PICS bags had significantly lower (P<0.05) moisture content than maize stored in PP bags. Storage in PICS bag slowed growth of P.truncatus populations and blocked infestation from the surrounding storage environment. On the contrary, PP bags permitted profuse build-up of insect population and cross-infestation. At six months, grain damage was 0.0%, 3.4%, 50.5% and 73.9%, corresponding to weight loss of 0.0%, 2.0%, 36.3%, and 47.7% in PICS0, PICS1, PP0 and PP1, respectively. Germination of maize stored in PP bags dropped from 91.1% to 37.0% and 12.7% in PP0 and PP1, respectively, whereas germination of maize stored in PICS bags dropped only marginally and reached 78.1% and 71.0% in PICS0 and PICS1, respectively, in six months. Without extreme loss of grain viability, a huge decrease in insect infestation, grain damage and weight loss is achieved by storing maize in PICS bag even under P.truncatus endemic conditions. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Tsetse flies use olfactory and gustatory responses, through odorant and gustatory receptors (ORs and GRs), to interact with their environment. Glossina morsitans morsitans genome ORs and GRs were annotated using homologs of these genes in Drosophila melanogaster and an ab initio approach based on OR and GR specific motifs in G. m. morsitans gene models coupled to gene ontology (GO). Phylogenetic relationships among the ORs or GRs and the homologs were determined using Maximum Likelihood estimates. Relative expression levels among the G. m. morsitans ORs or GRs were established using RNA-seq data derived from adult female fly. Overall, 46 and …

Evaluation Of Acaricide-Treated String Curtains For Control Of Two-Spotted Spider Mite Tetranychus Urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) On Greenhouse Roses And Impact Of The String Curtain On The Predatory Mite Phytoseiulus Persimilis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae), Emilie M. Deletre, Romain Bonafos, Thibaud Martin

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Foliar sprays of pesticides are frequently used to control two-spotted mites on rose flowers, but these also destroy predatory mites and pose a high risk of contamination for humans and the environment. Using a novel approach to avoid spray applications on rose plants, modified acaricide-treated string curtains were adapted to control the pest. Two main aims of this study were: (i) to identify the lethal concentration of string curtains treated with propargite, dicofol, flufenoxuron, acrinathrin or tau-fluvalinate (τ-fluvalinate) on Tetranychus urticae, and (ii) to test the design (feasibility) and efficiency of the string curtains to trap the phytophagous mites on …

Evaluation Of Solar Energy Solution For Egyptian Remote Areas, Tarek Ihab Abdelsalam, Tarek M. Hatem

Mechanical Engineering

Egypt is currently suffering the symptoms of the energy crises, such as electricity outage and high deficit as a result of constant increase in fossil foils through the last decades. On the other hand, Egypt has a high solar availability of more than 18.5 MJ annually. Additionally, Egypt has large uninhabited deserts on both sides of the Nile valley and in Sinai Peninsula, which represent more than 96.5% of the nation’s total land area. Therefore, solar energy is one of the prospective solutions for energy shortage in Egypt. Furthermore, these vast lands are advantageous for commissioning huge solar power generation …

Novel Image-Dependent Quality Assessment Measures, Asaad Hashim, Zahir Hussain Jan 2014

Novel Image-Dependent Quality Assessment Measures, Asaad Hashim, Zahir Hussain

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The image is a 2D signal whose pixels are highly correlated in a 2D manner. Hence, using pixel by pixel error what we called previously Mean-Square Error, (MSE) is not an efficient way to compare two similar images (e.g., an original image and a compressed version of it). Due to this correlation, image comparison needs a correlative quality measure. It is clear that correlation between two signals gives an idea about the relation between samples of the two signals. Generally speaking, correlation is a measure of similarity between the two signals. An important step in image similarity was introduced by …

Embodied Learning: Towards New Models For Engaging With Art Within The University, Clive Barstow, Paul Uhlmann Jan 2014

Embodied Learning: Towards New Models For Engaging With Art Within The University, Clive Barstow, Paul Uhlmann

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Mark Johnson’s embodied mind thesis (2007) makes a case for aesthetics as being the most important philosophy for the 21st century. If this is the case, then art schools become even more important to the advancement of knowledge; however economic reforms clearly place traditional art schools under enormous pressure. These two points provide a background for considering two ongoing projects as flexible models for embodied learning – the Jimmy Pike Scholarship, which is an annual artist-in- residency programme for Aboriginal artists, and the Third Space Project which is an ongoing International exchange programme between Edith Cowan University and University of …
