Neurobiological Mechanisms That Contribute To Stress-Related Cocaine Use, John R. Mantsch, Oliver Vranjkovic, Robert C. Twining, Paul J. Gasser, Jayme R. Mcreynolds, Jordan M. Blacktop Jan 2014

Neurobiological Mechanisms That Contribute To Stress-Related Cocaine Use, John R. Mantsch, Oliver Vranjkovic, Robert C. Twining, Paul J. Gasser, Jayme R. Mcreynolds, Jordan M. Blacktop

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The ability of stressful life events to trigger drug use is particularly problematic for the management of cocaine addiction due to the unpredictable and often uncontrollable nature of stress. For this reason, understanding the neurobiological processes that contribute to stress-related drug use is important for the development of new and more effective treatment strategies aimed at minimizing the role of stress in the addiction cycle. In this review we discuss the neurocircuitry that has been implicated in stress-induced drug use with an emphasis on corticotropin releasing factor actions in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and an important pathway from the …

The Supreme Court As A Constitutional Court, Jamal Greene Jan 2014

The Supreme Court As A Constitutional Court, Jamal Greene

Faculty Scholarship

Political institutions are always works in progress. Their practical duties and aims as instruments of governance may not always match their constitutional blueprints or historical roles. Political offices might not always have the power to do what their constituent officers either need or want to do. A polity's assessment of whether the desired power is a need or a want may indeed mark a boundary between law and politics in the domain of institutional structure. The law gives, or is interpreted to give, political organs the tools they need to function effectively. They must fight for the rest.

Comparison Of The Physical, Physiological And Perceptual Demands Of Small-Sided Games And Match Play In Professional Football Players, Stephen Hissey Jan 2014

Comparison Of The Physical, Physiological And Perceptual Demands Of Small-Sided Games And Match Play In Professional Football Players, Stephen Hissey

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The physical and technical requirements of a range of small-sided football (soccer) games (SSGs) have previously been examined in order to compare their requirements to competitive match play. SSGs are used to combine the technical, tactical and physical components of normal match play in training in order to make the training sessions specific to football. However, most previous research has focused on youth players and it is known that the playing patterns, and thus session outcomes, are different for elite players. Consequently, research examining elite players is required in order to improve our understanding of the use of SSGs in …

Establishment Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (Amf) On Micropropagated Teak (Tectona Grandis L. F.), Maria Isabel Ramirez Caro

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Improvement of root production and ability to establish mycorrhizas from different Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) inoculum sources on two micropropagated teak (Tectona grandis L. f.) clones was examined at the acclimatisation phase. Teak shoots were maintained on a multiplication medium containing Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrients and organics, 30 g L-1 sucrose, 0.5 μM benzyl amino purine, 0.5 μM kinetin, 2.5 g L-1 agar, 2.5 g L-1 gelrite and pH 5.8. After 35 days shoots were exposed to a rooting medium (RM) containing ¼ strength MS macronutrients, ½ strength MS iron, full strength MS micronutrients, and 20 g L-1 …

Bio-Inspired Surface Engineering For Hydrophobicity, Hua Guo Jan 2014

Bio-Inspired Surface Engineering For Hydrophobicity, Hua Guo

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Highly evolved, efficient and sophisticated biological systems can be used as models for scientific innovations. This research explored specific surface structures on plant leaves with respect to their hydrophobicity in the context of the often arid Australian climate. The relationships between leaf surface structures and their hydrophobicity could inform the making of artificial surfaces with specially designed hydrophobicity.

Moderate hydrophobicity and strong surface adhesion were discovered on many study plant leaves. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed that their surface morphologies could be categorized into four groups while their water-repellent mechanisms were considered at an individual species level. Specifically, physical models …

Contemporary Aesthetics: Perspectives On Times, Space And Content, Ossi Naukkarinen Jan 2014

Contemporary Aesthetics: Perspectives On Times, Space And Content, Ossi Naukkarinen

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

What is contemporary aesthetics? The answer to this question is often simply stated rather than carefully elaborated, even if the current nature and scope of the discipline is far from self-evident. To examine how both the concept and the field of contemporary aesthetics can be understood, I suggest that it is useful to consider three themes: the time, space, and content of aesthetics, i.e., the questions of when, where, and what contemporary aesthetics is. Through this, it is possible to construe a conceptual space of contemporary aesthetics and to compare different instantiations of it with each other.

Reflections On Music And Propaganda, Luis Velasco Pufleau Jan 2014

Reflections On Music And Propaganda, Luis Velasco Pufleau

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

In general, the concept of propaganda refers to a method as well as the symbolic object mobilized by it. Propaganda equally constitutes a particular type of communication that involves not only the mobilization of objects, but also of discourse, places, acts, and rituals. This essay employs the writings of Max Weber, Paul Ricœur, Jacques Ellul, and Jacques Rancière to analyze propaganda as a particular type of symbolic political dispositif linked to a specific performance and utterance context. I examine humanitarian songs as a propaganda tool in democracy, and show the conditions and the limits of their mobilization through their contextualization. …

Brain And Aesthetic Attitude: How To Integrate "Old" And "New" Aesthetics, Gianluca Consoli Jan 2014

Brain And Aesthetic Attitude: How To Integrate "Old" And "New" Aesthetics, Gianluca Consoli

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

At present, various efforts are being put forward to naturalize aesthetics. One of the most controversial disciplines of aesthetics is neuroaesthetics. The first applications of neuroimaging of the aesthetic experience of paintings occurred ten years ago. Over this decade, neuroscientific findings have determined three common centers of visual aesthetic experience: top-down processing; reward and evaluation; and cortical sensory processing. Undoubtedly, these common centers require better identification and further investigation. However, the experimental data currently available make it possible to falsify or corroborate traditional philosophical theories of aesthetic perception and evaluation. Within an integrated approach to aesthetics, this selective function might …

Mechanical Reproduction In An Age Of High Art, Chris Barker Jan 2014

Mechanical Reproduction In An Age Of High Art, Chris Barker

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This paper reopens the question of the place of high art in the period identified by Walter Benjamin as the age of mechanical reproduction. Walter Benjamin, Bruno Latour, and Adam Lowe are wrong to think that mechanical reproduction has transformed the concept of art, destroying the aura of art or transmitting that aura from original to copy. The concept of art cannot be redefined by the modern change in the capacity to reproduce art unless art was initially defined primarily by its uniqueness/nonreproducibility. Photographic reproduction has caused major changes in the visual arts and in the way we consume art, …

(Dis)Functions: Marxist Theories Of Architecture And The Avant-Garde, Michael Chapman Jan 2014

(Dis)Functions: Marxist Theories Of Architecture And The Avant-Garde, Michael Chapman

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This paper investigates the relationship between architecture and theories of the avant-garde in the critical projects of the 1970s, with a focus on the theories of Peter Bürger and Manfredo Tafuri. Both Tafuri and Bürger were writing from within the context of a radicalized Marxism and were fueled by an intellectual pessimism towards the totalizing systems of cultural production that questioned the role of resistance in aesthetics and the inability of the historical avant-gardes to engage within the political and economic fields of contemporary society. While there is a common ancestry to these two approaches, and mutual acceptance of the …

Oceanic Feeling In Painterly Creativity, Jussi Antti Saarinen Jan 2014

Oceanic Feeling In Painterly Creativity, Jussi Antti Saarinen

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

The oceanic feeling is a frequent topic of discussion in both creativity research and aesthetics. Characterized by a sensation of self-boundary dissolution, the feeling has been reported to involve experiences of fusion with various objects, including works of art. In this article, I discuss the oceanic feeling in the specific context of painterly creativity. I begin by arguing that the oceanic feeling cannot be classified as an emotion, mood, or bodily feeling, in the established definitions of these terms. I then introduce philosopher Matthew Ratcliffe’s theory of existential feelings to help formulate a more accurate view of the oceanic feeling. …

Schiller Revisited: "Beauty Is Freedom In Appearance" Aesthetics As A Challenge To The Modern Way Of Thinking, Wolfgang Welsch Jan 2014

Schiller Revisited: "Beauty Is Freedom In Appearance" Aesthetics As A Challenge To The Modern Way Of Thinking, Wolfgang Welsch

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This essay re-evaluates Schiller's idea of beauty as “freedom in appearance,” as brought forward in his Kallias or On Beauty(1793), against the backdrop of early modern and modern thinking that based itself on a fundamental split between nature and freedom, world and man. Schiller's claim that natural beauty results from freedom in nature bridges this gap. His suggestion is confirmed by modern science. Schiller's view is recommended and defended as a way of escaping modern bigotry

Dewey And Everyday Aesthetics - A New Look, Kalle Puolakka Jan 2014

Dewey And Everyday Aesthetics - A New Look, Kalle Puolakka

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

John Dewey is frequently mentioned as an important forerunner of everyday aesthetics. In this article, I attempt to provide an updated view of Dewey’s place within everyday aesthetics by drawing attention to aspects in Dewey’s own work and in contemporary interpretations of his philosophy that have not been thoroughly discussed in the context of everyday aesthetics. In the first part, I offer a reading of Dewey’s notion of aesthetic experience that unties its content through noting the important position Dewey ascribes to imagination in aesthetic experience in the later parts of Art as Experience. The second pillar of the pragmatist …

Nancy And Neruda: Poetry Thinking Love, Joshua M. Hall Jan 2014

Nancy And Neruda: Poetry Thinking Love, Joshua M. Hall

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

My intention in this paper is to respond to Jean-Luc Nancy’s claim that poetry, along with philosophy, is essentially incapable of what Nancy describes as “thinking love.” To do so, I will first try to come to an understanding of Nancy’s thinking regarding love and then of poetry as presented in his essay “Shattered Love.” Having thus prepared the way, I will then respond, via Pablo Neruda’s poem “Oda al Limón,” to Nancy’s understanding of poetry vis-à-vis “Shattered Love.” This response, in acting out Nancy’s thinking regarding love, will suggest a greater plurality within poetry than Nancy acknowledged

Nowhere-Zero 3-Flows In Signed Graphs, Yezhou Wu, Dong Ye, Wenan Zang, Cun-Quan Zhang Jan 2014

Nowhere-Zero 3-Flows In Signed Graphs, Yezhou Wu, Dong Ye, Wenan Zang, Cun-Quan Zhang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Tutte observed that every nowhere-zero $k$-flow on a plane graph gives rise to a $k$-vertex-coloring of its dual, and vice versa. Thus nowhere-zero integer flow and graph coloring can be viewed as dual concepts. Jaeger further shows that if a graph $G$ has a face-$k$-colorable 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface, then it has a nowhere-zero $k$-flow. However, if the surface is nonorientable, then a face-$k$-coloring corresponds to a nowhere-zero $k$-flow in a signed graph arising from $G$. Graphs embedded in orientable surfaces are therefore a special case that the corresponding signs are all positive. In this paper, we prove …

Smooth Peano Functions For Perfect Subsets Of The Real Line, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2014

Smooth Peano Functions For Perfect Subsets Of The Real Line, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In this paper we investigate for which closed subsets P of the real line R there exists a continuous map from P onto P 2 and, if such a function exists, how smooth can it be. We show that there exists an infinitely many times differentiable function f : R → R 2 which maps an unbounded perfect set P onto P 2 . At the same time, no continuously differentiable function f : R → R 2 can map a compact perfect set onto its square. Finally, we show that a disconnected compact perfect set P admits a continuous …

Analyses Of Crime Patterns In Nibrs Data Based On A Novel Graph Theory Clustering Method: Virginia As A Case Study, Peixin Zhao, Majorie Darrah, Jim Nolan, Cun-Quan Zhang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper suggests a novel clustering method for analyzing the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data, which include the determination of correlation of different crime types, the development of a likelihood index for crimes to occur in a jurisdiction, and the clustering of jurisdictions based on crime type. The method was tested by using the 2005 assault data from 121 jurisdictions in Virginia as a test case. The analyses of these data show that some different crime types are correlated and some different crime parameters are correlated with different crime types. The analyses also show that certain jurisdictions within Virginia …

* The Use Of Tree Crown Variables In Over-Bark Diameter And Volume Prediction Models, Ramazan Ozcelik, Maria J. Diamantopoulou, John R. Brooks Jan 2014

* The Use Of Tree Crown Variables In Over-Bark Diameter And Volume Prediction Models, Ramazan Ozcelik, Maria J. Diamantopoulou, John R. Brooks

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Linear and nonlinear crown variable functions for 173 Brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) trees were incorporated into a well-known compatible volume and taper equation to evaluate their effect in model prediction accuracy. In addition, the same crown variables were also incorporated into three neural network (NN) types (Back-Propagation, Levenberg-Marquardt and Generalized Regression Neural Networks) to investigate their applicability in over-bark diameter and stem volume predictions. The inclusion of crown ratio and crown ratio with crown length variables resulted in a significant reduction of model sum of squared error, for all models. The incorporation of the crown variables to these …

Research in the deep terrestrial biosphere is driven by interest in novel biodiversity and metabolisms, biogeochemical cycling, and the impact of human activities on this ecosystem. As this interest continues to grow, it is important to ensure that when subsurface investigations are proposed, materials recovered from the subsurface are sampled and preserved in an appropriate manner to limit contamination and ensure preservation of accurate microbial, geochemical, and mineralogical signatures. On February 20th, 2014, a workshop on “Trends and Future Challenges in Sampling The Deep Subsurface” was coordinated in Columbus, Ohio by The Ohio State University and West Virginia University faculty, …
