Domain-Specific Probes For Calcium Binding To Neural Cadherin, Charles Ryan Humphries
Domain-Specific Probes For Calcium Binding To Neural Cadherin, Charles Ryan Humphries
Honors Theses
Cadherin is a major mediator of cell adhesion whose adhesive function is dependent upon calcium binding. However, the binding of calcium is not completely understood. The binding of calcium can be monitored using an abbreviated construct that contains only the first two extracellular domains (EC12) which includes two tryptophan residues, W2 and W113. Single tryptophan mutants were created which contain only W113 (W2A) and W2 (W113F). Fluorescence spectra were obtained of W2A, W113F, and WT in the presence and absence of calcium. Calcium titration data were collected for each protein. In both experiments, calcium binding increased the fluorescence signal of …

The Chamberlain Estate Or: How Investors Will Learn To Stop Worrying And Give Me Money To Make My Movie, Connor King
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to have developed a competent pre-production packet for a feature length indie movie set in the South that would pique the interest of potential investors, while having ascertained the knowledge and skill set to fully realize the script as a leader of the project. Methods to achieve this goal include working on movie sets from all angles to gain first hand experience—from directing to holding sound equipment—and researching the market potential from films of a similar genre to see if this venture is worthwhile financially for myself and other stakeholders. After working on sets …
The Smoke Free Campus Movement, Daniel Roberts
The Smoke Free Campus Movement, Daniel Roberts
Honors Theses
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the rising number of smoke free college and university campuses in the United States and to identify the mechanisms that can be used to implement a national policy requiring all colleges and universities to be smoke free. To fully investigate this topic, I utilized qualitative research through analyses from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, reports from the Surgeon General, a tobacco control legal consortium, newspaper articles, television news reports, websites of colleges and universities with smoke free policies, to consolidate the research into an overarching picture of the current climate …

Performance And Stability For Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Membranes For The Dehumidification Of Methane, Dora Frances Sullivan-González
Performance And Stability For Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Membranes For The Dehumidification Of Methane, Dora Frances Sullivan-González
Honors Theses
The biogas production from organic waste—animal, sewage, landfill material— could be a valuable renewable fuel. Before this biogas—predominately bio-methane— can be converted to fuel, it must be dehumidified. Typically membrane-based gas dehumidification uses hydrophilic polymer membrane materials, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and cellulose acetate (CA). The main problems with polymer dehumidification membranes are methane loss and the susceptibility of polymer materials to plasticization by H2O. Room temperature ionic liquid membranes (RTIL- membranes), according to recent literature, are not plasticized by water and have large water/CH4 selectivities. We built on the initial literature RTIL-dehumidification data by looking at a series of …
North-African Immigration To France: Economic Benefit Or Burden?, Adam Weaver
North-African Immigration To France: Economic Benefit Or Burden?, Adam Weaver
Honors Theses
Over the past several years, France has had a steadily increasing immigrant population. Most of these immigrants come from fellow European nations, but North-Africans follow closely behind as the second largest group of French immigrants. The ever-increasing Maghrebian population in urban areas has caused hostility from French natives as social unrest rises in response to the European sovereign debt crisis of 2008. The goal of this thesis is two-fold. First, it aims to show the growing intolerance that North-Africans are experiencing in French society. And second, it will examine the consequences of North-African immigration on the labor market outcomes of …
Investigation Into The Synthesis Of Dodecahydro-3a,9a-Diazaperylene, Andrew Palmer
Investigation Into The Synthesis Of Dodecahydro-3a,9a-Diazaperylene, Andrew Palmer
Honors Theses
Dodecahydro-3a,9a-diazaperylene (DHDAP) may serve as a potential donor for use in a donor-sigma-acceptor complex for unimolecular rectification. In order to use DHDAP as a donor, its synthesis must first be studied and altered in such manners as to add a synthetic handle. Other things of important include increasing the yield and better understanding the mechanism by which DHDAP forms. Numerous experiments were conducted in various manners such as testing various solvents among various temperatures to even adding in extra reagents to push the reaction one way or another. In the end the yield of the synthesis was found to improve …
The Potential Success Of The F.D.A.'S New Paradigm Based On Community Pharmacists' Opinons, Anna Blair Brown
The Potential Success Of The F.D.A.'S New Paradigm Based On Community Pharmacists' Opinons, Anna Blair Brown
Honors Theses
For the past 40 years the F. D. A. (Food and Drug Administration) has considered creating a third class of drugs in the United States of America that would be a pharmacist-only class which could only be sold with the approval of a pharmacist. Several things have inhibited its creation, the main one being the Durham-Humphrey Amendment which states that there are only two classes of drugs: prescription and over-the-counter. This has culminated into the development of the F.D.A.'s new paradigm, which is an expansion of the over-the-counter class of drugs to create and O.T.C.+ category. Community Pharmacists were interviewed …
La Alegría Ya Viene: How Chile's Youth Are Reshaping History, Anna Terry
La Alegría Ya Viene: How Chile's Youth Are Reshaping History, Anna Terry
Honors Theses
The highly controversial military dictatorship in Chile lasted from 1973 to 1989. General Augusto Pinochet's neoliberal policies saved the country from economic ruin in the 1980's, but Chile became highly socially unequal as a result. After he was democratically voted out of office, politicians decided not to change his economic policies in order to avoid a collapse, and those policies are still in place today, specifically in terms of education. Therefore, an entire generation of Chileans has grown up after the dictatorship under these same highly unequal education policies, and as a result, they have begun to protest. What started …

Dna-Based Species Identification And Population Genetics Of The Eastern Subterranean Termite, Reticulitermes Flavipes, In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Benjamin Collins
Honors Theses
This study investigates the distribution patterns of Reticulitermes flavipes, an important recycler of nutrients and well-known destroyer of man-made structures, in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. As a precursor to this work, it was first necessary to distinguish the target species from other co-occurring termite species. To combat this problem, a modified Polymerase Chain Reaction- Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay that uses a 384-bp segment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII) gene was designed. To test the accuracy of this tool, predictions made from using this method were compared to predictions made by genetic sequencing. This modified PCR-RFLP …

Litigation Finance And The Problem Of Frivolous Litigation, Michael B. Abramowicz
Litigation Finance And The Problem Of Frivolous Litigation, Michael B. Abramowicz
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Litigation finance companies have some incentives to screen plaintiffs applying for financing based on the strength of their claims, but a company may still have incentives to provide financing when the probability that a plaintiff would prevail at litigation is low. The result is that litigation finance may facilitate both meritorious and nonmeritorious claims. This Article argues that fee limitation rules for
litigation finance companies can improve their incentives to select only relatively high probability cases, thus enhancing the normative case for states to enact legal reforms allowing litigation finance. A simple version of the rule, which will work if …
Justice Policy Reform For High-Risk Juveniles: Using Science To Achieve Large-Scale Crime Reduction, Jennifer L. Skeem, Elizabeth S. Scott, Edward Mulvey
Justice Policy Reform For High-Risk Juveniles: Using Science To Achieve Large-Scale Crime Reduction, Jennifer L. Skeem, Elizabeth S. Scott, Edward Mulvey
Faculty Scholarship
After a distinctly punitive era, a period of remarkable reform in juvenile crime regulation has begun. Practical urgency has fueled interest in both crime reduction and research on the prediction and malleability of criminal behavior. In this rapidly changing context, high-risk youth – the small proportion of the population where crime is concentrated – present a conundrum. Research indicates that these are precisely the individuals to intensively treat to maximize crime reduction, but there are both real and imagined barriers to doing so. Institutional placement or criminal court processing can exclude these youths from interventions that would better protect public …
The Matrix Method Of Linear Dichroism, Kenna Collums
The Matrix Method Of Linear Dichroism, Kenna Collums
Honors Theses
This thesis discusses linear dichroism, and in particular the matrix method behind the spectroscopic technique. Linear dichroism uses the difference in the absorption of light that is parallel to the orientation axis and the absorption of light that is perpendicular to the orientation axis. From this process, the structure and function of molecules can be studied. The matrix method diagonalizes a Hamiltonian matrix with a unitary matrix. This Hamiltonian matrix is constructed from the transition energies, which are the diagonal elements, and coupling energies, which are off-diagonal elements.

Gender Differences Associated With Memory Recall, Lee Morgan Gunn
Gender Differences Associated With Memory Recall, Lee Morgan Gunn
Honors Theses
This study investigated whether a gender difference existed in the context of romantic relationships. Participants rated positively valanced words and negatively valanced words, that were related to a romantic relationship, on how relevant they were to realistic romantic relationships. Participants were then given a free recall task to recall any words that they rated earlier. The study found that a gender difference did exist in the context of negatively valanced words. Women were more successful in recall of negatively valanced words than men. These findings indicate that women encode emotional information differently than men encode emotional information and recall that …

Enhanced Single Molecule Mass Spectrometry Via Charged Metallic Clusters, Amy Chavis
Enhanced Single Molecule Mass Spectrometry Via Charged Metallic Clusters, Amy Chavis
UROP Posters
Water-soluble metallic clusters have been used for a number of important applications. One of the most stable clusters is Au25(SG)18, which are negatively charged in solution and highly monodisperse making them ideal for characterization and analysis applications. We present here a new application where these clusters are shown to increase the mean residence time of polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules within an alpha hemolysin (αHL) nanopore. The effect appears over a range of PEG sizes and ionic strengths. This increases the resolution of the peaks in the single molecule mass spectrometry (SMMS) current blockade distribution and suggests a means for reducing …
Signaling The Green Sell: The Influence Of Eco-Label Source, Argument Specificity, And Product Involvement On Consumer Trust, Lucy Atkinson, Sonny Rosenthal
Signaling The Green Sell: The Influence Of Eco-Label Source, Argument Specificity, And Product Involvement On Consumer Trust, Lucy Atkinson, Sonny Rosenthal
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Consumers cannot verify green attributes directly and must rely on such signals as eco-labels to authenticate claims. Using signaling theory, this study explored which aspects of eco-label design yield more positive effects. The study uses a 2 (argument specificity: specific versus general) × 2 (label source: government versus corporate) × 2 (product involvement: low versus high) experimental design (n = 233). Specific arguments consistently yield greater eco-label trust and positive attitudes toward the product and label source, but only with low-involvement products is source important, with corporate labels yielding more positive attitudes. Findings are discussed in terms of theoretical and …
The Role Of Resilience In Individual Innovation, Muhammad T. Amir
The Role Of Resilience In Individual Innovation, Muhammad T. Amir
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Organisations in today‘s changing environment face significant challenges, requiring continual innovation. A critical factor in their response may be employees‘ resilience, the ability to apply high levels of effort and persistence while initiating, promoting and applying new ideas. However, despite growing evidence of the value of many positive psychological characteristics in organisational behaviour, the role of resilience in individual innovation has received little attention in the literature.
This thesis describes two studies of this issue. First, current perspectives and definitions of resilience were reviewed, revealing a need for an improved definition, a re-examination of its dimensions and a new measure. …

Neurobiological Mechanisms That Contribute To Stress-Related Cocaine Use, John R. Mantsch, Oliver Vranjkovic, Robert C. Twining, Paul J. Gasser, Jayme R. Mcreynolds, Jordan M. Blacktop
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The ability of stressful life events to trigger drug use is particularly problematic for the management of cocaine addiction due to the unpredictable and often uncontrollable nature of stress. For this reason, understanding the neurobiological processes that contribute to stress-related drug use is important for the development of new and more effective treatment strategies aimed at minimizing the role of stress in the addiction cycle. In this review we discuss the neurocircuitry that has been implicated in stress-induced drug use with an emphasis on corticotropin releasing factor actions in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and an important pathway from the …
