This paper presents a direct numerical method based on gas dynamic equations to predict pressure evolution during the discharge of nanoenergetic materials. The direct numerical method provides for modeling reflections of the shock waves from the reactor walls that generates pressure-time fluctuations. The results of gas pressure prediction are consistent with the experimental evidence and estimates based on the self-similar solution. Artificial viscosity provides sufficient smoothing of shock wave discontinuity for the numerical procedure. The direct numerical method is more computationally demanding and flexible than self-similar solution, in particular it allows study of a shock wave in its early stage …

Gravity Effect On Electrical Field Generation And Charge Carriers Transfer During Combustion Synthesis Of Sulfides, A. A. Markov, I. A. Filimonov, Karen S. Martirosyan

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The effect of gravity on the electric potential generated by the combustion synthesis of zinc sulfide is analyzed using the numerical simulation. Recent experimental studies on generation of electric voltage during combustion synthesis of zinc sulfide (ZnS) have revealed high voltage signals (4 V) with duration about 1 s, which are much higher than those produced by the gas–solid and solid–solid combustion reactions studied previously. These data have raised the question about mechanism of such a phenomenon. In our previous work we developed a novel (distributed) model describing the electric potential generation during combustion synthesis of sulfides (CSS) that didn't …

This paper reports on an unmodeled, all-sky search for gravitational waves from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHB). The search was performed on data from the second joint science run of the LIGO and Virgo detectors (July 2009–October 2010) and was sensitive to IMBHBs with a range up to ∼200 Mpc, averaged over the possible sky positions and inclinations of the binaries with respect to the line of sight. No significant candidate was found. Upper limits on the coalescence-rate density of nonspinning IMBHBs with total masses between 100 and 450 M⊙ and mass ratios between 0.25 and 1 were …

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) secure the health-related needs of an affected patient-client by identifying upstream determinants of health for which the law provides a remedy. Some healthcare professionals have noted key activities of MLPs, including the provision of legal assistance, educating providers about social determinants of health, and advancing policy change by addressing existent laws and regulations that may impede the maintenance of good health.1 Although these efforts are essential, they do not fully capture the potential of MLPs to serve as a locus of research and intervention to strengthen the evidence base to advance individual and population health. Across the …

Pt-Symmetric Acoustics, Xuefeng Zhu, Hamidreza Ramezani, Chengzhi Shi, Jie Zhu, Xiang Zhang

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We introduce here the concept of acoustic parity-time (PT) symmetry and demonstrate the extraordinary scattering characteristics of the acoustic PT medium. On the basis of exact calculations, we show how an acoustic PT -symmetric medium can become unidirectionally transparent at given frequencies. Combining such a PT -symmetric medium with transformation acoustics, we design two-dimensional symmetric acoustic cloaks that are unidirectionally invisible in a prescribed direction. Our results open new possibilities for designing functional acoustic devices with directional responses.

A Potential Mechanism For Extracellular Matrix Induction Of Breast Cancer Cell Normality, Robert D. Bruno, Gilbert H. Smith

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications

Extracellular matrix proteins from embryonic mesenchyme have a normalizing effect on cancer cells in vitro and slow tumor growth in vivo. This concept is suggestive of a new method for controlling the growth and spread of existing cancer cells in situ and indicates the possibility that extracellular proteins and/or embryonic mesenchymal fibroblasts may represent a fertile subject for study of new anti-cancer treatments.

From Principles To Practice: Sustainable Supply Chain Management In Smes, Alison Louise Ashby Jan 2014

From Principles To Practice: Sustainable Supply Chain Management In Smes, Alison Louise Ashby

Plymouth Business School Theses

Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) is an evolving discipline, and incorporates the environmental and social performance dimensions of sustainability with the traditional measure of economic performance; current SSCM research indicates a skew towards economic performance and its interaction with environmental performance, while social performance is underrepresented (Pagell and Wu, 2009, Schaefer, 2004, Sharma and Ruud, 2003). The UK clothing industry represents a relevant research focus due to its supply chain complexity, and scale and scope of its environmental and social impacts; this thesis further recognises the tendency for academic research to focus on Large Enterprises (LE) (Curran and Blackburn, 2001) …

Factors External To The Individual Encouraging Idea Generation In Sme Contexts, Graham Michael Perkins

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis sets out to explore factors external to the individual that encourage creative idea generation in SME environments, understanding their importance in a variety of organisational contexts. The original contribution to knowledge made by this thesis is the creation of a framework which aids understanding by splitting the various factors into those responsible for initiating and sustaining idea generation. Literature concerning creative idea generation is continuously developing and contains a broad spectrum of topics and understandings. Key amongst these are leadership, the nature of creative idea generation, theories such as the ‘strength of weak ties’, collective creativity and the …

A New Framework For Strategic Information Systems In Airline Industry, Abdulrahman Aljefri Jan 2014

A New Framework For Strategic Information Systems In Airline Industry, Abdulrahman Aljefri

Plymouth Business School Theses

Stiff competition in the Airline sector mandates airlines to innovate ways to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals; however, without a strong IT the mission to attain this would be arduous. Large airlines do their best to maximise the use of enterprise systems to stream their business processes. Nonetheless, some airlines are not up to date with technology and are left with few choices when attempting to secure their existence in today’s harsh market. One option is to implement bleeding edge systems concurrently (which is our focus in this paper) due to the fact that very scant research exists …

Choroidal Metastasis From Leiomyosarcoma In Two Cases, Eric Feinstein, Swathi Kaliki, Carol L Shields, Hormoz Ehya, Jerry A Shields

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor of mesenchymal cells and is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma. Leiomyosarcoma is a notably rare tumor in the ophthalmic region and can be of primary, secondary or metastatic origin. To the best of our knowledge, there has only been one published case of leiomyosarcoma metastasis to the choroid. In this case study, we report two cases of primary leiomyosarcoma with metastasis to the choroid of the eye. Both cases displayed systemic metastasis and showed response to high dose plaque radiotherapy. Despite its prevalence as the leading form of sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma rarely metastasizes to the ocular …

Culture And Nongovernmental Organizations Performance, Ondo State, Nigeria, Oluwatoyin Akinkuotu Jan 2014

Culture And Nongovernmental Organizations Performance, Ondo State, Nigeria, Oluwatoyin Akinkuotu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Non-government organizations (NGOs) became strong forces in global affairs at the local, national, and international level, with the emergence of the United Nations Organization (UNO) in 1945. Many of these NGOs have failed to attain their goals, and research efforts have attributed their failure to socioeconomic and political factors. The situation is worse in developing countries, where there has been an alarming proliferation of NGOs since the 1980s. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the performance of community-based NGOs in Nigeria in relation to the cultural values of the people. The theoretical frameworks for the study were …

Using Document Indexers For Faceted Search In Dataspaces, Hsun-Ming Lee, Jaymeen Shah, Ju Long

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Efficient information retrieval is essential to enrich user experience when searching for documents in dataspaces. With the continued growth in the volume and complexity of documents, the efficient information retrieval for searches has become increasingly challenging. To improve users’ search experience, faceted search combines direct keyword search methods with faceted browsing using a predefined set of categories (facets). This paper studies a faceted search approach that integrates dynamic facets generation with search. To further enhance the faceted search, alternative indexers based on pre-defined ontology for data repositories within dataspaces are evaluated in terms of execution time and data size. Experimental …

The Slow Evolution Of Second Amendment Law, Joan H. Miller Jan 2014

The Slow Evolution Of Second Amendment Law, Joan H. Miller

Seattle University Law Review Online

Shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting left twenty children and six adults dead, a public movement ensued. The movement demanded that gun violence be addressed as a public health issue. While the movement led to successful gun control reform in a few states, it was unable to gain any traction in the federal government and had the opposite effect in others states where firearms became easier to own, carry, and conceal. Joan Miller provides an update on changes in the Second Amendment law that have occurred since her Article, The Second Amendment Goes to College, was published in …
