Polypharmacy And Symptoms Of Pain In Women With Fibromyalgia, Anna Young, Victoria S. Menzies Jan 2014

Polypharmacy And Symptoms Of Pain In Women With Fibromyalgia, Anna Young, Victoria S. Menzies

UROP Posters

Fibromyalgia (FMS), a syndrome characterized by chronic widespread pain (CWP), has no known etiology, and coincides with other life-altering symptoms including fatigue, mood disturbances and non-restorative sleep. Despite the multiple medication classes that are typically used for the treatment of FMS, there are no known studies assessing the efficacy of polypharmacy on symptoms of pain in this patient population. While analgesic medications, including opioid or opioid-like medications, are commonly prescribed, the use of these medications for FMS has not been fully described, including potential incidence of analgesic overuse. The primary purpose of this secondary analysis was to examine how many …

The Beginning Of The End Of Internet Freedom, Dawn C. Nunziato Jan 2014

The Beginning Of The End Of Internet Freedom, Dawn C. Nunziato

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Although the Internet was initially viewed as a medium for expression in which censorship would be impossible to implement, recent developments suggest exactly the opposite. Countries around the world--democracies as well as dictatorships--have implemented nationwide filtering systems that are changing the shape of Internet freedom. In addition to usual suspects like China, liberal democracies such as the United Kingdom and Australia have taken steps to implement nationwide Internet filtering regimes. In 2013, United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron announced a plan to require mandatory “family friendly” default filtering of all Internet access by the end of 2014. While such Internet …

I’M Still Dancing: The Continued Efficacy Of First Amendment Precedent And Values For New-School Regulation, Dawn C. Nunziato Jan 2014

I’M Still Dancing: The Continued Efficacy Of First Amendment Precedent And Values For New-School Regulation, Dawn C. Nunziato

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This response essay reflects on the meaning of two foundational First Amendment decisions: New York Times Co. v. Sullivan — characterized by Harry Kalven, Jr., as “an occasion for dancing in the streets”— which imposed limits on public officials’ recovery for defamation, and New York Times Co. v. United States, which reaffirmed the central First Amendment principle against prior restraints. Professor Jack Balkin characterizes these decisions as responses to “old-school speech regulation . . . [in which] the state had used penalties and injunctions directed at speakers and publishers in order to control and discipline their speech.” But, Balkin observes, …

Keeping The Internet Free In The Americas, Dawn C. Nunziato

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

To preserve and protect the Internet as a forum for the uninhibited, robust, and wide-open exchange of ideas and information in the Americas, governments must take active steps to facilitate such free speech values. The relationship between governments and Internet service providers is of pre-eminent importance in this regard, as ISPs are in the position to be the facilitators of the free flow of information and ideas. On the one hand, ISPs should not be shackled with intermediary liability for hosting harmful content. On the other hand, ISPs should not be granted the discretion to restrict communications flowing through their …

Denying The Significance Of Race, Cynthia Lee Jan 2014

Denying The Significance Of Race, Cynthia Lee

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this book chapter, published in TRAYVON MARTIN, RACE, AND AMERICAN JUSTICE: WRITING WRONG (Sense Publishers 2014), Cynthia Lee analyzes the George Zimmerman trial from a critical race perspective. She analyzes why all the major legal decision makers associated with the Trayvon Martin case (judge, prosecution and defense team) were so eager to deny the significance of race. She posits that they either sincerely believed the case had nothing to do with race or thought it improper or strategically disadvantageous to acknowledge that race was relevant. The judge wanted to run a colorblind trial. The defense did not want the …

Explaining The Decline In Fertility Rates In Post-War Italy, Susanna Rychlak Jan 2014

Explaining The Decline In Fertility Rates In Post-War Italy, Susanna Rychlak

Honors Theses

The aim of this thesis is to examine the decline in fertility rate in post-war Italy and identify its causes. Fertility rate in Italy dropped dramatically across 1970-2010 in a stark departure from the nation's previous reproductive patterns. This has led to an increasingly aging population, and holds important implications for Italy's future. This study demonstrates that there has been a meaningful shift in cultural values that has led to fertility decline in Italy since 1970. In order to provide historical context for the importance of this cultural shift, the thesis first presents the Italian culture and familial structure of …

The Tutte Polynomial Formula For The Class Of Twisted Wheel Graphs, Amanda Hall Jan 2014

The Tutte Polynomial Formula For The Class Of Twisted Wheel Graphs, Amanda Hall

Honors Theses

The 20th century work of William T. Tutte developed a graph polynomial that is modernly known as the Tutte polynomial. Graph polynomials, such as the Tutte polynomial, the chromatic polynomial, and the Jones polynomial, are at the heart of combinatorical and algebraic graph theory and can be used as tools with which to study graph invariants. Graph invariants, such as order, degree, size, and connectivity which are defined in Section 2, are graph properties preserved under all isomorphisms of a graph. Thus any graph polynomial is not dependent upon a particular labeling or drawing but presents relevant information about the …

Cost Minimization Approach To Synthesis Of Linear Reversible Circuits, Ben Schaeffer, Marek Perkowski Jan 2014

Cost Minimization Approach To Synthesis Of Linear Reversible Circuits, Ben Schaeffer, Marek Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents a heuristic cost minimization approach to synthesizing linear reversible circuits. Two bidirectional linear reversible circuit synthesis methods are introduced, the Alternating Elimination with Cost Minimization method (AECM) and the Multiple CNOT Gate method (MCG). Algorithms, example syntheses, and extensions to these methods are presented. An MCG variant which incorporates line reordering is introduced. Tests comparing the new cost minimization methods with the best known method for large circuits are presented. Results show that of the three methods MCG had the lowest average CNOT gate counts for linear reversible circuits up to 24 lines, and that AECM had …

Visible-Light Photocatalyzed Cross-Linking Of Diacetylene Ligands By Quantum Dots To Improve Their Aqueous Colloidal Stability, Marion G. Götz, Hiroko Takeuchi, Matthew J. Goldfogel, Julia M. Warren, Brandon D. Fennel, Colin D. Heyes Jan 2014

Visible-Light Photocatalyzed Cross-Linking Of Diacetylene Ligands By Quantum Dots To Improve Their Aqueous Colloidal Stability, Marion G. Götz, Hiroko Takeuchi, Matthew J. Goldfogel, Julia M. Warren, Brandon D. Fennel, Colin D. Heyes

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ligand cross-linking is known to improve the colloidal stability of nanoparticles, particularly in aqueous solutions. However, most cross-linking is performed chemically, in which it is difficult to limit interparticle cross-linking, unless performed at low concentrations. Photochemical cross-linking is a promising approach but usually requires ultraviolet (UV) light to initiate. Using such high-energy photons can be harmful to systems in which the ligand–nanoparticle bond is fairly weak, as is the case for the commonly used semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Here, we introduce a novel approach to cross-link thiolated ligands on QDs by utilizing the photocatalytic activity of QDs upon absorbing visible …

Evaluating N-Benzylgalactonoamidines As Putative Transition State Analogs For Β-Galactoside Hydrolysis, Qui-Hua Fan, Susanne Striegler, Rebekah Langston, James Barnett Jan 2014

Evaluating N-Benzylgalactonoamidines As Putative Transition State Analogs For Β-Galactoside Hydrolysis, Qui-Hua Fan, Susanne Striegler, Rebekah Langston, James Barnett

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental evidence is provided for p-methylbenzyl-D-galactonoamidine to function as a true transition state analog for the enzymatic hydrolysis of aryl-β-D-galactopyranosides by β-galactosidase (A. oryzae). The compound exhibits inhibition constants in the low nanomolar concentration range (12–56 nM) for a selection of substrates. Along these lines, a streamlined synthetic method based on phase-transfer catalysis was optimized to afford the required variety of new aryl-β-D-galactopyranosides. Last, the stability of the galactonoamidines under the assay conditions was confirmed.

Continuous Monitoring Of Turning In Patients With Movement Disability, Mahmoud Ahmed El-Gohary, Sean Pearson, James Mcnames, Martina Mancini, Fay Horak, Sabato Mellone, Lorenzo Chiari Jan 2014

Continuous Monitoring Of Turning In Patients With Movement Disability, Mahmoud Ahmed El-Gohary, Sean Pearson, James Mcnames, Martina Mancini, Fay Horak, Sabato Mellone, Lorenzo Chiari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Difficulty with turning is a major contributor to mobility disability and falls in people with movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). Turning often results in freezing and/or falling in patients with PD. However, asking a patient to execute a turn in the clinic often does not reveal their impairments. Continuous monitoring of turning with wearable sensors during spontaneous daily activities may help clinicians and patients determine who is at risk of falls and could benefit from preventative interventions. In this study, we show that continuous monitoring of natural turning with wearable sensors during daily activities inside and outside the …

Women, Law, And Human Rights In Cameroon: Progress Or Status Quo?, Victoria M. Time

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This paper assesses what progress there is in Cameroon regarding women’s statuses. Based on a qualitative strategy, the paper examines laws that are in place to address women’s plight in the country. The paper argues that while progress is being made on some levels, the status quo, that is, female marginalization is still entrenched in other facets. The paper advances recommendations for creating an egalitarian society.

Beyond The Strait And Narrow: The Import Of Queer Criminology For Criminology And Criminal Justice, Vanessa R. Panfil, Jody Miller

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

[Introduction] In March 2014, as part of its community relations service, the U.S. Department of Justice held a community service training for police officers that focused on developing strategies to better prevent and respond to bias crimes against transgender citizens. While the impetus for the training was recognition that this group is disproportionately affected by hate violence (see NCAVP, 2013), attendees of the training also highlighted the tumultuous relationships transgender individuals have had with law enforcement as another impetus for change. Transgender activists and the DOJ lauded the event as an important step for improved relationships between law enforcement and …

Factors That Influence A Jewelry Brand's Globalization Process, Mohammed Ahmed Faitaihi Jan 2014

Factors That Influence A Jewelry Brand's Globalization Process, Mohammed Ahmed Faitaihi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Local retail jewelry leaders of Saudi Arabian (S.A.) small to medium enterprises (SMEs) have struggled to survive through declining profits and increasing business foreclosures, thus threatening the sustainability of the Saudi retail sector and the Saudi economy. A globalization strategy to enhance profitability for jewelry retail SMEs in S.A. is needed, given the limited options for improving profitability. Despite this acknowledged need, leaders in S.A. have refrained from such a strategy because they lack knowledge of economic attraction features to target in the globalization process. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study using discriminant analysis was to examine specific countries' …
