Plant Volatiles Influence The African Weaver Ant-Cashew Tree Mutualism, Caroline Wanjiku, Fathiya M. Khamis, Peter E.A. Teal, Baldwyn Torto

Plant volatiles influence virtually all forms of ant-plant symbioses. However, little is known about their role in the mutualistic relationship between the African weaver ant and the cashew tree. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that cashew tree volatiles from plant parts most vulnerable to herbivory viz. inflorescence, leaves, and fruits, are attractive to weaver ants. Using behavioral assays, we show that these volatiles attract weaver ants but without significant difference in preference for any of the odors. These same plant parts are associated with extra floral nectaries (EFNs’) and therefore we evaluated the possibility that the ants associate …

Drivers And Barriers For Going Green: Perceptions From The Business Practitioners In Malaysia, Loke S-P, Khalizani K, Rohati S, Sayaka A

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The changes of global environmental conditions have placed great challenges to governments and societies. While it is not easy for the companies to go green, we need a renewed concern for our environment in order to revive the nation’s economic growth, social cohesion and ecological balances. This article identifies the drivers and barriers for the business industry to adopt green practices. A total of 571 business companies from the Perak State participated in this study. Four variables: (1) Regulations (β=0.159, p<0.05); (2) Social responsibility (β=0.201, p<0.05); (3) Pro-environmental organizational culture (β=0.389, p<0.01); and (4) Organizational supports (β=0.369, p<0.01) werefound to significantly affect the company’s green initiatives. The results indicated that the main internal barriers were: it lacked of financial resources (66.2%) and skilled staff (63.9%); whereas the main external barriers were: the penalty imposed were not severe enough for making any extra efforts (64.8%) and the penalty was light for violation of environmental regulations (63.2%). This research had implications for the academics, practitioners and policy makers. It provided greater insights into the green practices in Malaysian firms. The research findings also urged the local governments to greatly enhance regulatory scrutiny on the production and manufacturing industries.

Responses To Catastrophic Agi Risk: A Survey, Kaj Sotala, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Many researchers have argued that humanity will create artificial general intelligence (AGI) within the next twenty to one hundred years. It has been suggested that AGI may inflict serious damage to human well-being on a global scale ('catastrophic risk'). After summarizing the arguments for why AGI may pose such a risk, we review the fields proposed responses to AGI risk. We consider societal proposals, proposals for external constraints on AGI behaviors and proposals for creating AGIs that are safe due to their internal design.

This brief is about the use of mobile phones among homeless veterans for medical appointment reminders, and other health services provided by healthcare practitioners. In policy and practice, social workers and counselors should determine whether mobile communication would benefit homeless veterans with whom they work and should identify certain barriers to mobile communication that could exist; the VA should expand its mobile notification efforts and look for programs that reduce barriers to regular access to mobile communication. The last quarter of a century has brought major developments in the acquisition of images from plants through improvements in microscopy equipment, software and technique. Likewise, step changes in image analysis tools and the utilization and iterative redesign of fluorescent protein based markers and probes has revolutionized the ability of researchers to ask fundamental questions in cell biology and physiology. This research topic gives a snapshot of the current shape of the field in the plant sciences.

Every few years I like to take inventory of the Bowl Games. Each football season concludes with these loss leaders for intercollegiate football teams. Almost without exception teams who have been honored with an invitation to a bowl game will lose money with the cost of bowling exceeding the payouts for bowlers. Since their first extensive use in the 1904–05 Russo-Japanese War naval mines have continued to pose a considerable threat to innocent shipping. States reacted by adopting the 1907 Hague Convention VIII, which has been the only international instrument on the matter to date. The Act clarifies Georgia’s position on the duty owed to trespassers by owners and occupiers of land. Under the Act, owners and occupiers of land owe no duty of care to trespassers, except to refrain from causing purposeful injury. The bill would have authorized private probation companies to contract with county and municipal judges to oversee misdemeanor probationers. Private probation companies would have been able to exercise the full range of powers of a public probation officer to monitor a probationer, including electronic tracking, drug and alcohol testing, and assessing fees for the expense of supervising the probationer. The Act would have allowed the private probation company to appeal to a judge to toll the probationer’s sentence if the probationer failed to comply with any of the terms of the probation, including paying fees.
