Dynamic Bayesian Networks As A Probabilistic Metamodel For Combat Simulations, Clayton T. Kelleher

Simulation modeling is used in many situations. Simulation meta-modeling is used to estimate a simulation model result by representing the space of simulation model responses. Metamodeling methods are particularly useful when the simulation model is not particularly suited to real-time or mean real-time use. Most metamodeling methods provide expected value responses while some situations need probabilistic responses. This research establishes the viability of Dynamic Bayesian Networks for simulation metamodeling, those situations needing probabilistic responses. A bootstrapping method is introduced to reduce simulation data requirement for a DBN, and experimental design is shown to benefit a DBN used to represent a …

As legacy neutron irradiation facilities are shut down due to security and financial constrictions, a growing need arises for alternatives that can provide the same or similar radiation environments using methods and/or fuels that do not pose the same risks. For this reason, facilities that provide much lower neutron fluxes and different spectral shapes are being leveraged over longer irradiation intervals to meet this need. However, the question arises as to whether the use of these types of facilities provide a valid comparison to the legacy systems' results. Dynamic programming is used in many military and industrial applications to solve sequential decision making problems. This research proposes the development of a model and approach to address the application of dynamic programming in nation-building modeling. Through the creation of component indices to capture the state of operational variables: Political, Military, Economic, Social, Infrastructure, and Information (PMESII), a functional form of a system of differential equations is developed to account for the interactions between the state indices and instruments of national power: Diplomatic, Informational, Military, and Economic (DIME). Measurements Of Dna Damage And Repair In Bacillus Anthracis Sterne Spores By Uv Radiation, Chelsea C. Marcum

Spores of Bacillus anthracis (Ba) sterne were irradiated with 267nm UV light using small light emitting diodes. The pRB373 plasmid with a red fluorescent protein was transformed into Ba sterne cells prior to irradiation. Following irradiation, germination media was added and the spores were incubated for various times, to allow for DNA repair. The pRB373 plasmid was isolated and analyzed using real-time PCR. Primers were designed across the RFP in the plasmid yielding two amplicons, 245bp and 547bp long. PCR amplification was not achieved for germinated samples. Spore samples isolated using bead beating methods were amplified. Results indicate a quicker …

Within the U.S. military, senior decision-makers and researchers alike have postulated that vast improvements could be made to current Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Concepts of Operation through inclusion of autonomous flocking. Myriad methods of implementation and desirable mission sets for this technology have been identified in the literature; however, this thesis posits that specific missions and behaviors are best suited for autonomous military flocking implementations. Criminal Authorities And The State: Gangs, Organized Crime, And Police In Brazil, Michael Wolff

Drug gangs and organized criminal groups rarely evolve into structured authorities governing their resident communities. Where this occurs, however, they may effectively replace the state in its most basic functions, and consequently exclude subject populations from the rights and protections supposedly guaranteed by the state. Employing qualitative research methods, this study compares criminal development and state public security policies in Rio de Janeiro and Recife, Brazil. The research is primarily concerned with the development of criminal authority structures, and asks when, where, why, and how they develop. An affiliated corporate group consists of two or more corporations linked by sufficient stock ownership to cause them to function as an economic unit instead of as independent economic actors. Thus, an affiliated corporate group engaged in international business is often referred to as a multinational enterprise (MNE), a term that we will use throughout this Article. When corporate members of an MNE engage in transactions among themselves, the prices they employ (transfer prices) will significantly affect the amount of overall MNE income that is allocated to each member and, hence, to the tax bases of the various countries in …

Ending Genocide And Creating Human Right: A Call To Leaders In Higher Education--Exploring The Visionary Leadership Of Raphael Lemkin And Eleanor Roosevelt, Sam Mcfarland

International Journal of Leadership and Change

I first argue briefly that a basic course on human rights, now rarely taught in American universities, should be offered everywhere. I then describe the visionary leadership of Raphael Lemkin, who almost singlehandedly created the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and the inspirational leadership of Eleanor Roosevelt, without whom the Universal Declaration of Human Rights may never have been written. Their efforts and achievements are reviewed, and several of their common qualities that made them successful are noted.
