As befitting an evolutionary approach to the study of human behavior, the papers in this special issue of Human Nature cover a diversity of topics in modern and traditional societies. They include the goals of hunting in foraging societies, social bias, cooperative breeding, the impact of war on women, leadership, and social mobility. In combination these contributions demonstrate the utility of selectionist’s thinking on a wide variety of topics. While many of the contributions employ standard evolutionary biological approaches such as kin selection, cooperative breeding and the Trivers- Willard model, others examine important human issues such as the problems of …

International Law Applicable To Naval Mines, Chatham House

International Law Studies

This report summarizes the workshop held on February 26–27, 2014 on the law governing the use of naval mines in times of both peace and war. The workshop, organized by Chatham House, the Royal Navy and U.S. Naval War College, brought together a group of international law scholars, operational lawyers and other legal experts in the field. The objective of the workshop was to clarify existing law and identify areas of legal uncertainty to assist States to conduct their operations lawfully.

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Three-dimensional (3D) microscopic velocimetry methods have been increasingly developed in recent years to meet the measurement demands of microfluidic systems. As all 3D microscopic velocimetry techniques involve reconstructing a volume from two-dimensional (2D) sensor(s), sources of uncertainty arise that are unique from 2D velocimetry methods. This study discusses the error sources associated with a recently developed microscopic light field particle image velocimetry (LFPIV) method. The LFPIV technique combines altered optical hardware with postcapture computation to reconstruct 3D volumes. Several three-dimensional (3D) flow velocimetry systems use multiple cameras to perform volume reconstruction. The accuracy of velocity fields derived from reconstructed volumes depends on accurate camera calibration. Calibrating by accurately placing a precision target throughout the volume is an error prone chore. However, the use of multiple cameras allows for bundle adjustment, which results in very accurate calibration when applied appropriately. Bundle adjustment routines have traditionally been used in computer vision applications to simultaneously estimate camera parameters and 3D scene point locations through minimization of reprojection errors. Revolutionary Decade: Reflections on the 1960s was an exhibit series designed to provide students and citizens of our region with insights into a wide range of aspects of life in the United States during this eventful, turbulent decade.

Booth Library hosted several staff-produced exhibits on topics including visual arts, literature, fashion, music, science and technology, political and social movements, and other broad themes. Programs included panel discussions, film screenings, performances and a fashion show.

Klaus Mollenhauer was born in 1928 in Berlin. Like other Germans born at the end of the 1920s (e.g., Jürgen Habermas), Mollenhauer was forced to join the German army as a teenager at the end of the Second World War. After he was captured by the Soviets and imprisoned for almost seven weeks by British forces, Mollenhauer returned to school in 1946. Then he attended the College of Education in Göttingen in what was then West Germany. When asked about an underlying theme in his life’s work, Mollenhauer responded by re-stating a question originally formulated by hermeneutician Friedrich Schleiermacher: “I …

Strategic Monographs

From the earliest days of the Republic, the outlines of an evolving American grand strategy have been evident in our foreign and domestic policy. Much of that history continues to inform our strategic conduct, and therefore American grand strategy rests today on traditional foundations. Despite a welter of theory and debate, grand strategy as a practical matter is remarkably consistent from decade to decade, with its means altering as technology advances and institutions evolve but its ends and ways showing marked continuity.

Theses

Warfarin is the most commonly used oral anticoagulant medication given as a prophylaxis and/or treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic disorders. Warfarin doses vary up to 10-fold among patients due to pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacogenomics factors. In addition, Warfarin has a low therapeutic index with the risk of developing serious side effects such as severe bleeding or failure of therapy. Therefore, the main challenge to achieve the therapeutic goal in warfarin treatment is estimating the appropriate dose for each patient. It is estimated that pharmacogenomics factors contribute to more than 60% of dose variability. The gene encoding for the target …
