Eco-Theatre, R. Murray Schafer, Eleanor James, Sarah Ann Standing Jan 2014

Eco-Theatre, R. Murray Schafer, Eleanor James, Sarah Ann Standing

Publications and Research

Born in Sarnia, Ontario, in 1933, and widely considered Canada’s leading living composer, Raymond Murray Schafer is also a librettist, educator, writer, and “soundscape” theorist. Schafer composes for symphonies as well as chamber orchestras, solo instruments (he has even composed a piece for snowmobile), and vocalists. His compositions have played throughout the world. Schafer’s operatic cycle Patria—a masterwork almost forty years in the making—consists of ten episodes, plus a prologue and an epilogue. The prologue The Princess of the Stars and epilogue And Wolf Shall Inherit the Moon (also known as the Wolf Project) comprise an eco-theatre where Schafer places …

Relation And Responsibility: A Levinasian Reading Of King Lear, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2014

Relation And Responsibility: A Levinasian Reading Of King Lear, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Articles and Research

Emmanuel Levinas’s ideas about intersubjectivity can change our reading of Shakespeare by putting philosophical pressure on Shakespeare’s dramatization of human relatedness in The Tragedy of King Lear (1607–8). Even though Levinas does not discuss Lear at length in any of his published work, this difficult philosopher and this difficult play have much to say to one another. Levinas can be fruitfully brought to bear on Shakespeare’s great tragedy, generating fresh and productive ideas about its most pivotal moments, its most perplexing questions, and its most popular interpretations. In addition, Levinas can provide a useful frame for discussing the nature of …

Sentimentality In The Service Of Methodism: John Wesley's Abridgment Of Henry Brooke's The Fool Of Quality ( 17 65-1770), Mary Peace

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

This article examines the relationship between Methodist and sentimental discourses in the second half of the eighteenth century through the lens of John Wesley's abridgment of Henry Brooke's sentimental novel The Fool of Quality (1765-70). John Wesley's abridgment was published in 1781 under the title the History of Henry Earl of Moreland. My article is driven by the question of how a worldly Enlightenment text such as Brooke's Fool might have seemed ripe for the propagation of a Methodist theology that had abandoned the possibility of any true virtue existing in the world. In considering the relationship between Brooke's …

The Object, Ben Phelan, Dub Cornett, Jacob Young Jan 2014

The Object, Ben Phelan, Dub Cornett, Jacob Young

BYU Studies

Ordinary Kentucky man Todd Walker, self-proclaimed "discoverer," "protector," "guardian," and "witness" of the eponymous Object, and the focus of this fascinating documentary, is convinced that he has found the Urim and Thummim of the Old Testament. Todd and his two brothers-in-law, Dave Jones and Dale Bloomfield, had stopped by the local Goodwill during a particularly trying day at their tiling job. With fifteen dollars in his pocket, Todd was looking for glassware that he could purchase for cheap and then resell. Something else caught his eye, however. It was a black, oblong, cup-shaped object. "And when I picked it up," …

The Anthropology Of Plague: Insights From Bioarcheological Analyses Of Epidemic Cemeteries, Sharon Dewitte Jan 2014

The Anthropology Of Plague: Insights From Bioarcheological Analyses Of Epidemic Cemeteries, Sharon Dewitte

Faculty Publications

Most research on historic plague has relied on documentary evidence, but recently researchers have examined the remains of plague victims to produce a deeper understanding of the disease. Bioarcheological analysis allows the skeletal remains of epidemic victims to bear witness to the contexts of their deaths. This is important for our understanding of the experiences of the vast majority of people who lived in the past, who are not typically included in the historical record. This paper summarizes bioarcheological research on plague, primarily investigations of the Black Death in London (1349–50), emphasizing what anthropology uniquely contributes to plague studies.

“Putting On Her White Hair” The Life Course In Wilder’S The Long Christmas Dinner, Valerie Barnes Lipscomb Jan 2014

“Putting On Her White Hair” The Life Course In Wilder’S The Long Christmas Dinner, Valerie Barnes Lipscomb

English Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

Thornton Wilder’s The Long Christmas Dinner (1931) holds a unique place in American drama, as it covers ninety years in the history of one family. The one-act play captivated composer Paul Hindemith, who collaborated with Wilder to adapt The Long Christmas Dinner as a 1961 short opera by the same name. Analyses of both works overlook the representation of age and aging on stage. Actors perform the aging of characters from young adulthood to death in just a few minutes of stage time, challenging the “difference” of age by suggesting the stability of human identity over the life course. One …

Yemen Between Revolution And Counter-Terrorism, Sheila Carapico Jan 2014

Yemen Between Revolution And Counter-Terrorism, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter juxtaposes these seemingly two quite different storylines - one about Yemeni aspirations for social justice and better governance and the other about American and Saudi operations undertaken in the name of combating terrorism. The so-called GCC Initiative, and in particular the National Dialogue Conference process playing out as this book goes to press, provides the link between them. From the perspective of domestic politics, the Dialogue can be read as the outcome of agitation by the new generation of 'peaceful youth', as well as an outgrowth of Yemen's tradition of dialogue - an historic effort to resolve crisis …

Faculty Senate Newsletter, January 2014, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College

LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: Throughout Louisiana and across several generations of administrators, it can easily be observed that an uptick in enthusiasm for student events and interactions inevitably precedes the end of a regime. When a president or chancellor begins appearing in student forums or develops a taste for dormitory chats, seasoned observers know that the end is near. Why? The correlation of concern for the budding youth with the end of the reigning generation points up what might be called the sometimes genial, sometimes tedious “childishness” of Louisiana higher education. Rather than calling for the political equivalent of extreme unction, …

Moving Into a New Age

A Look At Lincoln: Little Known Witnesses To Historybackstage At The Lincoln Assassination, Frank Williams

Civil War Book Review

Abraham Lincoln’s murder on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, opened an ongoing wound. It was America’s first presidential regicide. Coming after four years of a brutal war and at the time of the restoration of peace as well as seeking reconciliation between North and South, Lincoln’s homicide seemed e....

Lincoln’s Persuasive Power

An Examination Of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Systems Model Of Creativity In Selected Plays Of Postwar English Political Theater / Hossein Safadaran, Hossein Safadaran Jan 2014

An Examination Of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Systems Model Of Creativity In Selected Plays Of Postwar English Political Theater / Hossein Safadaran, Hossein Safadaran

Student Works (2010-2019)

This thesis explores through scholarly discourse of creativity in the workings of Postwar English Political Theater from 1976 to 1984. Particularly it tries to specify to what extent the selected plays are congruent with Csikszentmihalyi‘s Systems Model of Creativity. While English Political Theater in the 1970s was distancing itself from the discourse of insanity, a scholarly discourse of creativity was evolving. In this context, I will try to scaffold four less explored political works, Edward Bond‘s The Fool, Tom Stoppard‘s Professional Foul, Howard Brenton‘s The Genius and Howard Barker‘s Scenes from an Execution by projecting the Systems Model of Creativity …

A Discourse Analysis Of Malaysian University Rankings In A Local Newspaper / Sean Harley Lee Allen, Harley Lee Allen Sean Jan 2014

A Discourse Analysis Of Malaysian University Rankings In A Local Newspaper / Sean Harley Lee Allen, Harley Lee Allen Sean

Student Works (2010-2019)

Education is indicated as a Malaysian Government priority based on extensive development of academic infrastructure. Incorporating internationalization is a primary goal through benchmarking against leading institutions worldwide. Ranking popularity has increased, influences national policies, shapes institutional identity, and directs academic decisions (Hazelkorn, 2009; Marginson and van der Wende, 2007; Holmes, 2006). Utilizing a discourse analysis approach suggested by Brown and Yule (1983) and Yule (2006), this study examines 40 newspaper articles from the New Straits Times involving ranking over seven years from 2004 until 2010. Little past research has been conducted involving text analysis within and above the sentence structure …

Brave New Forms: Adaptation, Remediation, And Intertextuality In The Multimodal World Of Hugo Cabret, Chelsea Marie Bromley Jan 2014

Brave New Forms: Adaptation, Remediation, And Intertextuality In The Multimodal World Of Hugo Cabret, Chelsea Marie Bromley

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Digital technologies have changed the way readers approach, experience, and respond to texts. In our hyper-mediated culture, images and texts converge and disseminate across multiple media platforms, changing once-passive readers and spectators into active agents in the intellectual and creative process of interpretation. This thesis examines the multimodal world of Hugo Cabret—the hybrid graphic novel, the film adaptation, and the novel’s official website—in an effort to better understand how intertextuality, convergence culture, and remediation play with media forms, represent an ideological shift toward participatory culture, and rework older, traditional media in the creation of new media and new media users. …

Impact Of Students' Perception Of Safety On Academic Success, Daniel Gittins Jan 2014

Impact Of Students' Perception Of Safety On Academic Success, Daniel Gittins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A student's perception of safety in a school will impact his or her academic achievement. If a student does not feel safe in a school, he or she will be distracted, and will have a diminished concentration span, lack of focus and increased anxiety, all of which will negatively impact his or her achievement and academic potential. It is important for educational leaders, therefore, to create cultures that are safe, welcoming, and conducive to a student's academic growth. To do this, educational leaders, at all levels of the school district--from district administrators, to building administrators, to teachers and other staff …

Balancing Design Theories And Individual Needs In Residential Modifications For People Living With Als, Gail J. Weber Jan 2014

Balancing Design Theories And Individual Needs In Residential Modifications For People Living With Als, Gail J. Weber

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This research and design project examines the philosophies and psychological factors of aging in place and universal design, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), and how they can be realistically applied in interior design for people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a terminal illness with an approximate two- to five-year prognosis. The case study explores the design needs and preferences of one couple living with ALS. Analysis of the case study suggests that a complete universal design or ADAAG-compliant overhaul in the home is ill-advised for these subjects, given their modest budget and limited …

Autism Centered Theatre: The Use Of Drama To Improve Social Skills For Children On The Autism Spectrum, Olivia Rhoades Jan 2014

Autism Centered Theatre: The Use Of Drama To Improve Social Skills For Children On The Autism Spectrum, Olivia Rhoades

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored the benefits of a week-long drama camp on the socials skills of children on the autism spectrum through the perspectives of parents and instructors. Data collection included pre- and post-camp questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that daily intensive exposure to drama and theatre can be a viable option to promote the development of social skills among children on the autism spectrum. The activities seemed to promote particular gains in caregiver/peer interaction, adjusting to routines, eye contact, and social perceptions/cues. Additionally, results indicated that children with greater social communication needs and those with more extensive exposure …

Stages Of Belief: The Nature Of Audience Response In Medieval And Early Modern Drama, Rebecca Cepek Jan 2014

Stages Of Belief: The Nature Of Audience Response In Medieval And Early Modern Drama, Rebecca Cepek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Medieval theatrical audiences expected that dramatic performances would have some element of truth: they believed that what they saw performed was in some sense factual, and this belief was due in large part to their participation in the dramatic spectacle. By the end of the sixteenth century, however, audiences easily differentiated between reality and the fictional world of the stage. What became blurred was the difference between the fact of the performers' lives and the fictional roles they embodied on stage. I make clear the connections between these responses through an analysis of a variety of texts, including "The Pinners …

Speak Out Loud: Deconstructing Shame And Fear Through Theater In A Community-Based Service-Learning Project, Karina Elizabeth Vázquez Jan 2014

Speak Out Loud: Deconstructing Shame And Fear Through Theater In A Community-Based Service-Learning Project, Karina Elizabeth Vázquez

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The combination of theater and community-based service-learning can be a powerful tool to allow university students to meet their educational goals while connecting them with the world. The performance of children's theater in elementary schools with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs, for example, has important pedagogical and social effects. For both groups of students, this becomes an opportunity to be better prepared for a level of social engagement involving bilingualism that was not necessarily available to their parents and/or members of their community. The author describes and analyzes the results of teh adaptation and performance of Alfonsina …

Foreign Direct Investment Into Crude Oil Exploitation And Its Impact On The Economic Growth And Environment: Case Study Of Niger Delta Oil Producing Communities / Salami Dada Kareem, Salami Dada Kareem Jan 2014

Foreign Direct Investment Into Crude Oil Exploitation And Its Impact On The Economic Growth And Environment: Case Study Of Niger Delta Oil Producing Communities / Salami Dada Kareem, Salami Dada Kareem

Student Works (2010-2019)

In spite of the general perception of the debilitating impact of exploitation of crude oil on the economic growth and the environment of a country, from a conceptual viewpoint, evidence of lack of clarity on the solution to the problem of over-exploitation of crude oil in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria abounds. A body of research has consistently pointed out the numerous negative externalities brought to bear on the environment by the oil companies in the region. There is no consensus on the best way to solve the problem of externalities in the Nigerian oil industries. It is important …

Sighting Circus: Perceptions Of Circus Phenomena Investigated Through Diverse Bodies, Katrina Lavers Jan 2014

Sighting Circus: Perceptions Of Circus Phenomena Investigated Through Diverse Bodies, Katrina Lavers

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis is an investigation into modern circus from its beginnings in 1768 through to present day contemporary circus arts. Eight diverse bodies in modern and contemporary circus are explored. These eight bodies act as different lenses to focus enquiry into gaps or ruptures in the grand narratives of circus, to reveal previously missing voices and histories and to set in place new approaches to perceiving circus phenomena.

In The Political Body, the phenomenon of embodied protest is identified and explored in relation to contemporary circus works. The importance of the engaged spectator is identified in determining political, poetic …

Buenos Aires, Fernando Degiovanni, Fernando Rosenberg Jan 2014

Buenos Aires, Fernando Degiovanni, Fernando Rosenberg

Publications and Research

One of the most important city ports of the Western Hemisphere, Buenos Aires has a history inextricably connected to the fluctuations of the Atlantic economy as well as to its strategic position as a gateway to vast and fertile flatlands that extend far beyond the city limits. Founded and re-founded in the 16th century as a secondary colonial outpost, Buenos Aires was dramatically transformed by the demands of the European markets at the turn of both the 18th and 19th centuries. In this context, two crucial developments are decisive for understanding the physical, social, and cultural fabric of the city: …

Freedom In Surrender, Vahri G. Mckenzie Jan 2014

Freedom In Surrender, Vahri G. Mckenzie

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background: The work is an artists’ profile of Claudia Alessi published in dancewest, the WA edition of the Australian Dance Council magazine. Alessi is a leading independent dancer and choreographer. It draws on my case study of Alessi to show how embodied knowledge and physical sensation inform her current choreographic process, and the transmission of this knowledge. As a dancer and researcher I use archival, field research and self-reflection to ask: how do we make creative processes explicit when they’re experienced as sudden insight?

Contribution: I was invited to contribute a series of artists’ profiles to dancewest. The research draws …
