Sustainable Public Transportation In Large Cities: Demand Estimation, Tadeas Umlauf Jan 2014

Sustainable Public Transportation In Large Cities: Demand Estimation, Tadeas Umlauf

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Public transportation helps to decrease the negative externalities caused by people's mobility. In many countries, the total number of vehicles and traffic has risen many times in the last decades but there is limited space to improve infrastructure in the cities. Large cities all over the world have a lot of issues with congestion, traffic noise, emission of greenhouse gases, and accidents. According to many international examples, sustainable public transportation in combination with synergistic projects (park & ride, kiss & ride, bike & ride) can help to overcome these issues. Therefore new transit modes and routes have been implemented in …

The Postcolonial Problem For Global Gay Rights, Stewart Chang Jan 2014

The Postcolonial Problem For Global Gay Rights, Stewart Chang

Scholarly Works

As the United States and Europe have progressed to the issue of same-sex marriage, countries that are still working through antecedent issues, such as the decriminalization of anti-sodomy laws, are regarded by international gay rights advocates as lagging behind the times. This often leads to pressures from the Western-dominated international community for reform. Through this Article, Professor Stewart Chang contributes to the ongoing scholarly debate between international human rights activists who desire to advance gay rights by utilizing the same rights-based models that prevail in the United States and Europe and critics of this approach who deem the universal imposition …

A Material World: Using Trademark Law To Override Copyright's First Sale Rule For Imported Copies, Mary Lafrance Jan 2014

A Material World: Using Trademark Law To Override Copyright's First Sale Rule For Imported Copies, Mary Lafrance

Scholarly Works

When the Supreme Court held that the first sale rule of copyright law permits the unauthorized importation and domestic sale of lawfully made copies of copyrighted works, regardless of where those copies were made, copyright owners lost much of their ability to engage in territorial price discrimination. Publishers, film and record producers, and software and videogame makers could no longer use copyright law to prevent the importation and domestic resale of gray market copies, and therefore could no longer protect their domestic distributors against competition from cheaper imported copies.

However, many of these copyright owners can take advantage of a …

I use salient examples in the form of media personae to illustrate how identity formation is viewed and changes over time. I intend to demonstrate that the advancements made through social media and the Internet have resulted in the formation …

Comparison Of Phenotypic Value Changes In Pure Lines Of Bombyx Mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) During Consecutive Generations Following Initial Selection On Cocoon Weight, Alireza Seidavi, Marian R. Goldsmith

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The experiments reported here were conducted to investigate the effect of selection on three quantitative traits, namely cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, and cocoon shell percentage, during four generations by rearing six pure breeds of domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) of Chinese and Japanese origin compared with random unselected groups as controls. All stages of rearing and data recording were performed over four rearing periods, with generations 1–3 during successive spring seasons and generation 4 during the autumn season in year 3. Each pure line contained two groups of selected and random (control) groups. Comparisons included the effect …

Invisible Starlit, Lindsey Grandt Jan 2014

Invisible Starlit, Lindsey Grandt

Honors Capstones

For my honors capstone project, I created an artistic piece called “Invisible Starlit.” “Invisible Starlit” is a one-woman show about my childhood years as I struggled with being bullied and unnoticed. This script is non-fiction and gives readers a first-hand look at the effects of bullying and metaphoric invisibility through my eyes as it happened to me with a comedic twist for relief. What started out as just a short, personal paper for one of my theatre classes turned out to be an entire play after I found myself continuing to write more about my personal experiences with bullying and …

City Of Superb Democracy: The Emergence Of Brooklyn's Cultural Identity During Cinema's Silent Era, 1893-1928., David Morton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study discusses how motion picture spectatorship practices in Brooklyn developed separately from that of any other urban center in the United States between 1893 and 1928. Often overshadowed by Manhattan's glamorous cultural districts, Brooklyn's cultural arbiters adopted the motion picture as a means of asserting a sense of independence from the other New York boroughs. This argument is reinforced by focusing on the motion picture's ascendancy as one of the first forms of mass entertainment to be disseminated throughout New York City in congruence with the Borough of Brooklyn's rapid urbanization. In many significant areas Brooklyn's relationship with the …

The Replicator And The First Amendment, Kyle Langvardt Jan 2014

The Replicator And The First Amendment, Kyle Langvardt

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

As 3D printing technology improves, the theoretical endpoint comes into view: a machine that, like the “replicators” of Star Trek, can produce anything the user asks for out of thin air from a digital blueprint. Real-life technology may never reach that endpoint, but our progress toward it has accelerated sharply over the past few years—sharply enough, indeed, for legal scholars to weigh in on the phenomenon’s disruptive potential in areas ranging from intellectual property to gun rights. This Article is concerned with the First Amendment status of the digital blueprints. As of August 2014, it is the first law review …

In God's Image And Likeness 2 Enoch, Noah, And The Tower Of Babel, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw, David J. Larsen

Interpreter Foundation Books

As I neared completion of the first volume of In God’s Image and Likeness in 2009, I had a chance to discuss the project with my former mission president, Virgil J. Parker. Grateful for the lasting influence President and Sister Parker have had on my life and still being in awe of the great store of practical and spiritual knowledge they have accumulated over decades of learning and service, I was thrilled when Virgil told me that the Moses was his favorite book of scripture. When I asked him what part he liked best, he spoke without hesitation, “The story …

Unplanned Coauthorship, Shyamkrishna Balganesh Jan 2014

Unplanned Coauthorship, Shyamkrishna Balganesh

Faculty Scholarship

Unplanned coauthorship refers to the process by which contributors to a creative work are treated by copyright law as coauthors of the work based entirely on their observable behavior during its creation. The process entails a court imputing the status of coauthors to the parties ex post, usually during a claim for copyright infringement. For years now, courts and scholars have struggled to identify a coherent rationale for unplanned coauthorship and situate it within copyright’s set of goals and objectives. This Article offers a novel framework for understanding the rules of unplanned coauthorship using insights from theories of shared intentionality. …
