The Trouble With Tourism, Steven J. Hollenhorst, Susan Houge Mackenzie, David M. Ostergren
Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration
The hegemonic view of tourism is as a global panacea for struggling peoples, environments and economies (Smith and Brent 2001). This article begins by arguing that increasing worldwide risks from human-induced climate change fundamentally alter the veracity of this prediction claim. As one of the world’s largest industries, tourism is also one of the largest emitters of carbon, primarily from air transport. Far from standing apart from our carbon-dependent economy, tourism is quite profoundly a creation of that economy and cannot be an antidote to the very stuff of which it is made. Further, to the extent that tourism functions …

Multi-Percussion In The Undergraduate Percussion Curriculum, Benjamin Andrew Charles
Multi-Percussion In The Undergraduate Percussion Curriculum, Benjamin Andrew Charles
Open Access Dissertations
As the role of the percussionist has evolved throughout the past century, a new genre of one performer playing multiple percussion instruments has evolved, most commonly known as "multi-percussion." Undergraduate percussion programs have struggled to keep up with the increasing demand for students to perform solo multi-percussion repertoire. This study first evaluates the role of multi-percussion in the curriculum with a historical overview and survey of current practices. It then explores the possibilities for integrating multi-percussion into the undergraduate percussion curriculum by providing a repertoire guide and a four-year course of study for undergraduate students.

Oral History Of Professional Theater Beaders In New York City, Mary Lalon Alexander
Oral History Of Professional Theater Beaders In New York City, Mary Lalon Alexander
Theses & Dissertations
A historic division between fine and mechanical arts led to a marginalization of certain art forms including textile beading and embroidery. Despite the opulence of beading and embroidery in theater costumes, there is limited documented history and scant scholarly literature about professional beading and the beaders who create the costumes. The aims of this study were to construct a history of professional theater beading in New York and to examine the oral histories of professional theater beaders. This qualitative oral history study included 12 participants who work in the professional beading industry. Open-ended interviews took place in New York City …

The deterioration of performance-based learning in contemporary educational practices, fostering one-to-one teaching models, prompts a discussion of the implications of theatricality on design education and the role of performance pedagogy in the architectural discipline. The Montessori method of education is a child-centered educational approach, which views the child as eager and capable of initiating learning in a supportive and prepared learning environment
