Examining The Factor Structure Of The Riverside Situational Q-Sort, Ashley Bell Jones Jan 2014

Examining The Factor Structure Of The Riverside Situational Q-Sort, Ashley Bell Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Situations are important in relation to behavior and personality (Lewin, 1946, 1951; Ross & Nisbett, 1991; Zimbardo, 2007). However, historical studies of situations have suffered from disagreement about their structure. The Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ: Wagerman & Funder, 2009) was developed as a tool to comprehensively measure situation characteristics. Because the RSQ is still relatively new, the factor structure of the RSQ has yet to be examined. Identifying the factor structure of the RSQ is important in order to provide an interpretation of the dimensions of situations and to make the first step in creating a smaller measure of situation …

Infrastructure To Model Complex Systems: Hydrological Modeling, Frank Wissinger Jan 2014

Infrastructure To Model Complex Systems: Hydrological Modeling, Frank Wissinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This research proposes an Infrastructure to model complex systems for hydrological modeling. Currently, the three main hydrological packages are: i) SEAWAT (modeling groundwater flow); ii) HECRAS (modeling surface water flow); iii) HEC-HMS (modeling atmospheric water flow). Each of these models is self-contained and has a different timescale and simulation speed. Consequently, any integrated model will only run as fast as the slowest of the models. This makes it difficult to provide reliable and dynamic information on water levels and water availability for a given geographical region in a timely manner. The goal of this research is to facilitate the integration …

In-Country: Identification Of Transformational Learning And Leadership In Human Rights Observers, Nancy D. Mcdonald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, has suffered through centuries of disenfranchisement, poverty, slavery, environmental disasters, internecine racial prejudice, and foreign infringement. Its people won independence from France in 1804 but only at the cost of huge human and financial losses. Since then, Haiti has known little freedom or democracy. In 1991, the first truly democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was elected (with a 67% majority). Nine months later, he was deposed by a military coup d'état. During that time and the chaotic years that followed, groups of human rights observers traveled to Haiti in an attempt to …

Kangaroo Care With Full-Term Infants: Maternal Behaviors And Mother-Infant Bonding, Melannie Pineda Jan 2014

Kangaroo Care With Full-Term Infants: Maternal Behaviors And Mother-Infant Bonding, Melannie Pineda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Kangaroo care (KC), has been shown to promote healthy development for both pre-term and full-term infants, and to improve mother-infant bonding (Ludington-Hoe, 2011; Charpak et al., 2005). Current research on the maternal benefits of kangaroo care is scarce, primarily focuses on early KC, and is mostly qualitative in nature (Fegran, Helseth, & Fagermoan, 2008; Matos et al., 2010). The present study examined the effect of late KC on maternal behaviors, sensitivity, and mother-infant interactive mutuality when infants were 3 months of age. Mothers who used kangaroo care as directed were found to have greater bonding scores and less anxiety about …

Student Publications

Our case describes a 56-year-old African-American female who underwent fluoroscopy-guided epidural steroid injection for recurrent neck and arm pain. The administration of steroid injections has been shown to diminish peripheral glucose metabolism and to stimulate gluconeogenesis, thus elevating blood glucose concentration and worsening insulin resistance. Though uncommon, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can arise following both epidural steroid treatments in diagnosed diabetics or in cases of coinciding infection. At the time of the epidural injection, the patient showed no signs of acute infection, concomitant drug use or any documented diabetes, all potential causes of DKA. Our case is unique because it describes …

Wavelet De-Noising Applied To Vibrational Envelope Analysis Methods, Edward Max Bertot Jan 2014

Wavelet De-Noising Applied To Vibrational Envelope Analysis Methods, Edward Max Bertot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In the field of machine prognostics, vibration analysis is a proven method for detecting and diagnosing bearing faults in rotating machines. One popular method for interpreting vibration signals is envelope demodulation, which allows a technician to clearly identify an impulsive fault source and its severity. However incipient faults -faults in early stages - are masked by in-band noise, which can make the associated impulses difficult to detect and interpret. In this thesis, Wavelet De-Noising (WDN) is implemented after envelope-demodulation to improve accuracy of bearing fault diagnostics. This contrasts the typical approach of de-noising as a preprocessing step. When manually measuring …

Testing The Theory Of Dominant Institutionalized Policy Narratives Using Florida’S “Stand Your Ground” Discourse, Amanda Gillespie Jan 2014

Testing The Theory Of Dominant Institutionalized Policy Narratives Using Florida’S “Stand Your Ground” Discourse, Amanda Gillespie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Narratives are a very important part of public policy negotiations and deliberations. Public policy research has shown that policy narratives are manipulated to fit the motives of the creators and enforcers of that narrative (Stone, 2002). The creators and enforcers of these narratives use symbols, language, and other techniques to ensure that the narrative survives and dominates the political and social environment by becoming the favored policy prescription (Stone, 2002; Miller, 2012; Jones & McBeth, 2010; Schneider & Ingram, 1993). This study employs a qualitative content analysis to trace the genealogy of the following narratives that make up the “Stand …

Three-Dimensional Geomodeling To Identify Spatial Relations Between Lithostratigraphy And Porosity In The Karst Carbonate Biscayne Aquifer, Southeastern Florida, Richard Westcott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In southeastern Florida, the majority of drinking water comes from the Biscayne aquifer. This aquifer is comprised of heterogeneous limestones, sandstones, sand, shell and clayey sand with zones of very high permeability. Visualizing the spatial variations in lithology, porosity and permeability of heterogeneous aquifers, like the Biscayne, can be difficult using traditional methods of investigation. Using the Roxar IRAP RMS software multi-layered 3D conceptual geomodels of the lithology, cyclostratigraphy and porosity were created in a portion of the Biscayne aquifer. The models were built using published data from borehole geophysical measurements, core samples, and thin sections. Spatial relations between lithology, …

The Effect Of Acute Moderate-Intensity Continuous And High Intensity Interval Exercise On Serum Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In Recreationally Trained Males, Thomas J. Mock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

BDNF is a neurotrophin that enhances neural health and is increased by exercise. PURPOSE: To compare moderate continuous (MCE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIE) effects on serum BDNF levels, and examine the relationship between BDNF and lactate. METHODS: Seven males completed a VO2peak test and two protocols on separate days, (MCE) 28 min at 60% Workrate max (WRmax) and (HIE) 28 min of intervals at 90%WRmax (10- 1 min intervals separated by 2 min of rest). Serum BDNF and lactate were determined prior, during, and following both protocols. RESULTS: BDNF levels (pg/mL) increased from baseline during HIE and MCE (p<.05). The BDNF response to HIE correlated with lactate for area under the curve (AUC) (r=0.901; P<0.05). CONCLUSION: HIE is an effective alternative to MCE at increasing BDNF. Additionally, lactate may act as a measure of intensity or a mediator of the BDNF response to exercise.
